From the early days building on the Xbox version to the logistics masterpiece that it has grown into on PC there's literally hundreds of hours of entertainment to be had. I've clocked over 700 hours as of this review having recently started my 10th or so progression world. Every time you play through it grows and changes with the regular patch cycle as player feedback helps shape the game.

The game can be thought of as a mix of Minecraft and Factorio but there are elements of other games like TDs and if you're familiar with Creeper World then you absolutely must get the recently released expansion which plays a lot like defense against the Creeper.

The game is largely focused on logistics and automation with lesser focuses on exploration and combat. Where it shines is the almost unlimited ways that problems can be solved with the almost uncountable machines at your disposal. Last I checked there's several hundred unique machines in the game.

Just recently the game has added mod support and Steam Workshop is due to release next week (August 2016). The modding API is great to work with and I've released several mods of my own. It was easy to learn (I didn't even know C# before I started!) and there's a great community of modders eager to help others learn. With the Workshop comes easy access to downloading and installing mods that opens up new machine options that can be easily added into any world.

This just touches on a few of the great aspects of the game. To go into detail on everything would take pages more. I can only recommend checking it out for yourself. It easy qualifies as one of my favorite games of all time.

So far the greatest game I discovered this year, which completely drew me in and offers a very good balance between challenge and a rewarding experience. It strongly focuses on automation, with several unique mechanics. Even though the graphics are similar to minecraft the game does not play similar at all.
Also the developer is very active on forums and continuously updates the game.

I'm a 33 years old gamer who has been playing video games since I was a kid. I'm getting very hard to satisfy. I rarelly really love a game. Maybe 1 or 2 games per year.

This one is 2016's highlight for me. I'm 180 hours and loving it. Cross over between Factorio and Minecraft, with more depth then both game combined. NOT super-user friendly. A little slow at start. But

But never insults the gamer's intelligence.
    So many things to try/explore/discover.

Also worth mentionning that it is developped by a single guy who streams (Youtube) 100% of his progress on the game.

    Love it.

What this game lacks in polish it makes up for in depth and complexity. Fortresscraft Evolved! is what you would get if you put Minecraft, Factorio, and Defense Grid into a blender. But if you've got the right stuff you will be amazed at what this game's systems allow you to do. One of the Steam Achievements is to smelt 1 million metal bars. This would be ludicrous in any other game and you will think it's crazy when you start off, but once you are smelting 100, then 200, then 500 bars per minute it will almost seem trivial. The developer is a bit eccentric, but he keeps adding to the game, improving it and expanding it. If you are brave you can sign up for the "bleeding edge" build which updates every 2 or 3 days giving a near constant stream of new machines, balance tweaks, and new features. For the less crazy, the game receives a major update about once a month that is more stable and polished. This is the best value for money of any game I've played in the past 2 years. Expand

You'll like this game if you like these sorts of games. :-)

So what is this game? It's a game about automation and efficiency first and foremost, a little portion of tower defense thrown in there. It's one of those games where you have so much to do and trying to prioritize what you think will help you the most is part of the fun. Do you go caving to try to find gems or do you dig

A few things to be prepared for; the game is in active development and feels very much like a beta game rather than a release. (The game itself is stable, for the record). Things are changing often. The developer(s) are very active in the Steam forums.

If you like designing systems flying through the air on grappling hook and fighting hordes of enemy minions with banks of lasers and missiles try this game. but be warned they have noticed your presence and the more you build the faster they will come after you.

Great game. it is quite complex, automate the collection of ores while fighting mobs, if there's one thing I learned from this game is that if something is not working right is because you do not has built enough (turrets, batteries, extractors) for those who like to challenge and exploration that's the game!

You'll have to manage power output, which metals need to be transformed into wires, coils, plates and PCB's, probably more I don't know about yet cause with my time played I don't think I've reached tier 2 yet. Which all can be automated on factory like assembly line. This game can be addictive. It's the next generation of Civilization addiction imo in regards to the 1 more turn. But with smelting enough bars to craft that item or research that upgrade to progress your operation.

I noticed some reviewers don't like some of the changes, which I don't get, from what I understand the changes made added more logistical problems to solve. Which in my book is a great thing. This game has so much depth to it you just won't believe it. Oh and I forgot to mention you will have to defend your base against attacks. So yeah there's that to.

The game is a bargain at twice the price imo with the amount of content and play time I've already gotten out of it. I was lucky enough to get it on sale and bought it on a whim after reading the description of the game and watching the videos.

    Highly recommended for logistical types.

This is one of those games that almost literally allow you to do what you want where you want. You want to grind the game away and take the lazy approach of producing resources really slowly, go ahead! You want to ramp up production to blazing fast limits go ahead!

One of the nice things about this game is you have a lot of room to do whatever you want. The player literally has tens of thousands of meters up and down to build if they do so desire to. It has a nice combination of balance and things to do. You can really feel like your building a factory without worrying about aliens coming to destroy it.

Which brings us to the tower defense portion. It's tower defense without all the walls to build, the AI pathing to change, ect. You build defenses wherever you wish and the enemies go around it however they can usually flying high above them while getting shot. You can't block off paths nor do the aliens try to blow up your defenses. While this takes away a lot of the strategy it also makes it so you aren't constantly annoyed by having to rebuild defenses.

The next thing is logistics. The logistics in this game are nice because there are a ton of choices. Do you mass storage all your resources in one gigantic mass storage, pulling out what you need more easier but having to manage the capacity limit. Do you mass storage everything separately building each up as you need it but making wiring a bit more complicated. Do you use hopper storage, requiring more resources but being able to place stuff in your inventory easier. How much do you automate, do you try to automate every single resource or only the ones you use constantly.

The UI could use some work, it's not perfect. However considering the very few people working on this game it's quite nice. There are quite a few polishes that could be done with the game but it's not complete it constantly being worked on with about 1 major patch a month and a constant beta test branch that gets updated every day. The nice thing is with the mainline major patches unlike some developers this developer keeps everything balanced. It's not add in 1000 features and then at some indeterminate future balance everything.

Speaking of the developers the main developer, DJArcas as he goes by on the forums and on youtube, is constantly streaming both his gameplay and his development of the game. He takes the time to answer questions that players might have and listen to their suggestions. Unlike most developers that dodge the hard questions and only give cryptic uncommitted answers, he will generally tell you exactly why he won't do something, or why what you are saying is wrong, or what you are doing is wrong or that he agrees with your suggestion and will be implementing it quickly. It is so nice to have a developer that answers community questions constantly and is so approachable. It's rare to see this in any game company and even rarer for a game that is so constantly updated!

I love this game. My base grows bigger and bigger, always researching new things which open more possibilities. Many have me to rethink or expand my current layouts.
More to notice is the constant development. The dev doesn't seem to have holidays as you can almost always watch his stream where he tests and programs new patches and content.

Now the game is all about automation. The idea is to NOT have to manually do anything and that as well as defeating the worlds tiered baddies are your main goals. You craft items and explore to discover new resources which can then be used to craft even more useful items (machines). Its built for multiplayer but Ive enjoyed learning the game through single player (Ive played >130 hours). I particularly like the sci-fi aesthetic and you cant beat the price to play time.

You can get pretty active with the very helpful community and even watch the dev livestream as he programs updates for the game. So, get on Steam and try it.

Not an especially charming or friendly take on the genre, FortressCraft Evolved has a lot of depth and potential for the dedicated player.
