    overall, EW is a magnificent expansion and the biggest sofar (in size & story scope)! ...
    early on it's more of a "best of all previous expansions mix", .. and has some pacing issues (like the lv 88 quests, besides to few action bits between some lengthy quest & story parts), but later it still delights and becomes it's own unique experience, tying up the storyline from ARR (or rather    overall, EW is a magnificent expansion and the biggest sofar (in size & story scope)! ...
    early on it's more of a "best of all previous expansions mix", .. and has some pacing issues (like the lv 88 quests, besides to few action bits between some lengthy quest & story parts), but later it still delights and becomes it's own unique experience, tying up the storyline from ARR (or rather even from 1.0) lovely and in some unexpected ways

    Imo only Shadowbringers is overall still a tick better (perfect pacing, with many fresh flavours, emotions & characters) ..., but EW is still magnificent in its own ways too, with a lot of content & story!

    To think, all this time thinking MMOs could only be built as chorelike grinds with horrid story and an even worse community- not every game does it like WoW.

    Initially, I avoided getting into FFXIV because it looked like 'just WoW with an FF skin, and I'm already invested in WoW and have all this cosmetic stuff'- the game is nothing like WoW.     The best part of this game is- the content comes first, and then the grinds come after. They've flipped the entire genre, you don't grind a dozen things for months just to get the gear and systems needed to be competent enough to do the only fun things in the game- everything in the game is fun, and anything grindy is off to the side that you can do if you like it and want its cosmetics.

    I hope, after almost two decades of mmos trying to be wow clones and dying because the wow formula is awful unless someone is already addicted- mmos start to look at this 'content is meant to be fun, not addicting' mindset behind FFXIV.

    This game restored my faith in a genre that's been decaying under the disgusting team of molesters and criminals running Blizzard.    … Expand

    As far as MMOs go, and I've played them for over 20 years, this is the penultimate creation currently available in the genre. It is not the BEST at each part but it is excellent at all of them and the story being 10/10 letting stand alone as just a good FF game by itself is a grand feat. Absolutely awesome.

    Brilliant and ever-beautiful storytelling complimented with great visuals and cinematography even if the cutscenes can get a bit verbose at times. Gameplay is as good as It's always been, super well-done dungeons and duties. Honestly, if you've played though XIV far enough to reach this expansion you're all but guaranteed an incredible experience. If Shadowbringers brought the feels,Brilliant and ever-beautiful storytelling complimented with great visuals and cinematography even if the cutscenes can get a bit verbose at times. Gameplay is as good as It's always been, super well-done dungeons and duties. Honestly, if you've played though XIV far enough to reach this expansion you're all but guaranteed an incredible experience.     I've played more MMOs than I can count. FFXIV wins the prize for story, especially the parts authored by Natsuko Ishikawa. Unlike many JRPGs, these characters are adults with Western facial features and body language confronting complex issues with an uplifting overall theme. Highly recommended for all ages.

    On the wings of Final Fantasy games, FFXIV not only is able to please long time fans of the series playing FF games since 1987, making this game a theme park mmorpg, it moves the series forward as a standalone rpg/jrpg, making the rpg part in "mmo" a reality.

    Endwalker can be considered the culmination of a masterpiece. And as many masterpieces in art, be music, story, painting, drawings and so on once you reach the end it leaves you in shambles crying, and a feeling of emptiness. But in my heart I know that this is just the beginning for FFXIV, the story will move forward and I'm eager and excited to see what this amazing team will be able to let us embark on.

    FFXIV is a love relationship between players and devs, players and creators, devs and creators, I want to say thank you to Yoshi-P, the ffxiv team and the community (most of it at least) for this amazing experience from the bottom of my heart. It gives me hope for the future of Final Fantasy but even more so for the real world, thanks to the messages that the story delivers to the players.     Epic conclusion! Loved it. They made this expansion with love. Can't wait for the next set of story. Added classes is great too. Combat still needs to be faster though.

    Would like to see another level of graphics (as optional) for higher end PCs.

    I had high hopes for this expansion and Creative Business Unit 3 has once again shattered all those hopes and surpassed them. The servers are holding up under the massive amount of players trying to get in, which can lead to a bit of queue-time, but the servers are stable and not laggy which is a feat in itself.
    The story reaches heights it hasn't seen yet in this game, the combat feels    I had high hopes for this expansion and Creative Business Unit 3 has once again shattered all those hopes and surpassed them.     This expansion has been nothing short of amazing and it lifts all of the previous expansions up as well by proxy. The way they've wrapped up 10 years of story in this expansion has not been done before in gaming and if you've ever cared about any Final Fantasy game, FFXIV is a game you cannot miss.    … Expand

    Was incredibly skeptical they'd be able to top Shadowbringers but I think they somehow managed. Incredibly satisfying wrap-up to an almost decade-long story that clearly has an incredible amount of care put into it.

    Best MMORPG ever made and also one of the best stories ever told. The way this game tells a story is unbelievable, to the point you forget you're playing an MMO. Amazing music as well. Masayoshi Soken should be recognized as the best video game music creator of our time. Thank you to everyone who gave us this masterpiece of a game.

    Live through all trials and years to the ultimate finale!
    - Music connects to the screen perfectly.
    - Amazing cutscenes, more like full movie experience.

    Coming up on six days since preorder access began and have been unable to play other than a few hours Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Main story beats and music are great, but that doesn't counterbalance the game being flat out not playable now or for the foreseeable future.

    This is 10 years of story telling, 10 years of world building, 10 years of character development, wrapped up in as satisfying manner as you can think. Many series mess up conclusions, Endwalkers hits the mark and exceeds it.
    Outside of the story, these are some of the best dungeons in the game. And all the boss fights are    Not only the best FFXIV expansion, the best FF story bar none.

    I didn't think they could keep the steam going from Shadowbringers but to my pleasant surprise they managed to pull it off. Endwalker is a delight in story, music, gameplay and level design. Would very much reccomend this title.

    Although a very different story compared to the previous expansion, Endwalker manages to successfully tie up the storylines, dating all the way back to 2.0. There definitely is some filler quests- more than in Shadowbringers, but even so they still manage to be relevant for the story, so I can see why they put them in, even though they're not a lot of fun to do.

    Great experience! Been playing this game since ARR and with the realease of Endwalker marking the ending of the Hydaelyn and Zodiark tales it just feel so fulfilling! It it a magnificent history that deservers every compliment it gets!

    Pretty much everything in this expansion is top notch. Excellent pacing, beautiful locales, interesting new NPCs, superb music score,    The mad lads at Square Enix actually did it! Yoshi-P and his team actually managed to top Shadowbringers, a masterpiece in its own right! This expansion is an epic and fitting end to the incredible Hydaelyn / Zodiark saga, which has spanned over 8 years.

    Pretty much everything in this expansion is top notch. Excellent pacing, beautiful locales, interesting new NPCs, superb music score, wonderful cinematography and voice acting.. and best of all, a story that is unexpected and yet so captivating and satisfying. I found myself playing hours on end just to find what happens next in the story.

    I eagerly await to see what other rabbits Square Enix will be pulling out of the hat in the patches to come. Kudos again to Yoshi-P and team for this incredible game! The wait was well worth it.    … Expand

    Barring the initial server issues expected of any major MMO expansion launch, Endwalker serves as the magnum opus of FFXIV and Yoshi-P. The music, art, and writing are better than they've ever been, and I can't wait to see what else the team has in store.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wish I could score this higher than 10/10. The MSQ took me like 60 hours to finish and it wasn't long enough. With Shadowbringers having been so good I went into this with some slight tredpidation that my expectations would be too high and it could not live up to the hype. But once again they blew it out of the park. The story is fantastic, and the way they build it up and reference things they put in place expansions ago is superb. The second, third, fith and final zone were all equally mind blowing and you know the devs did an incredible job when you finish the final zone and want more more more. The way the characters are developed and the concepts they use are mindblowing. I haven't even mentioned the music yet, and I'm not sure I could do it justice with words alone. A massive well done to everyone in involved, the high user score is very well deserved.… Expand

    Starting this series near 9 years ago now I would never have imagined this game would have grown to such amazing heights but it has. This game has been one of the best narrative driven video games I have played in my time alive. Barring that the world building, dungeons and raids all fit thematically while being mechanically fun. Endwalker (and XIV overall) contains one of the best stories told through video games; and in addition to that, great visuals, amazing aesthetics, and stunning music. The cinematography in cutscenes is on the Hollywood level. And I'm not even mentioning various improvements theyI thought topping Shadowbringers was impossible, but they did it. I can't believe it even as I'm writing this! Have only played on BLM so far, and it feels like being vastly improved over Shadowbringers version, and player's reviews about other jobs tell much the same.     P.S. Yes, login problems and queues are very upsetting, but wait a week or two and it'll be much better! Queues are already declining and developers provided necessary fixes to address the login problems. The game isn't going anywhere and it's MUCH worth waiting until things settle down a bit.    … Expand

    I didn't think it was possible to match shadowbringers, yet, somehow, they topped it. Best story i've ever experienced, and everything just worked together and complimented it so well. Actual masterpiece.

    There are very noticeable improvements in quality for everything from dialogues, animations, zones, to music. Speaking of music, every piece introduced this expansion did not fail to immerse me and elevate the area or scenes where they are played.

    They also introduced some more RPG elements to the story by allowing you to roam with quest-important NPCs which increases the immersion and gives the writers more ways to convey information relevant to the character and the story. They are also good for taking lots of screenshots.

    Combat contents such as story missions, dungeons and the three trials are all 10/10 for me with regards to music, battle design, and atmosphere. Except maybe the follow the NPC stealth missions. I'd give it a 5/10 as its not bad but also not great.

    Job changes this time leans generally towards a positive note except for Dark Knight. It has not been changed much from Shadowbringers as they only added more off gcd cooldowns to it, leaving you with still just the 123 combo. It also still has the worst invulnerability cooldown out of all the tanks. General sentiment is that its gameplay is much too similar to a Warrior and does not have much of an identity, which I am inclined to agree.

    Saying that, I do have some minor critiques pertaining to pacing and the usually consistent number of objectives for quests in a certain part of the story before heading to the final zone. This part was the preparation phase of the journey where the quest flavour overall was laid back. However, the music played on this series of laid back quests had a tone of urgency to it which I thought was unsuitable. Further there was the issue of the number of objectives for a particular quest in this series. Usually, you have to talk to, kill, or gather around 3-4 things, but this quest had an unusual 8 objectives that was certainly unfun to find. That said, the conclusion for this series of quests was a very beautiful and heart-breaking scene that marked the first time I full on cried. Be that as it may, this bad experience is eclipsed by all the things Endwalker did right. And there are a great many things they did right.

    Overall, Endwalker is arguably their best work to date. The expansion exceeded my expectations in every aspect and further cements Final Fantasy XIV to not only be one of the best MMO, but also one of the best RPGs currently, in my opinion. Some players might meme a bit about it being critically acclaimed but it actually lives up to that and more.    … Expand

    I cannot express how beautifully this expansion ties together the entire journey i've been on all these years, if you're at the point of reading Endwalker reviews and you are still considering "trying" ffxiv, I dunno what else i can tell you, its a journey you need to start for yourself, theres a lot of us here who can only say, its worth your time.

    I thought that Shadowbringers couldn't be toped. I was wrong. Final Fantasy XIV does it again. I am super exited for the raids and all the coming content.

    I was very skeptical if they can finish the story on a high note, since lately every entertainment product messes up the ending retroactively ruining the whole experience. Not here, this was an extremely well made and polished journey with the best ending one could have hoped, but not expect at all.

    The beginning of the game is a little quiet, but our tension will rise and rise toward the climax. The portrayal of the people, the landscapes, the ideas and cultures of the different countries, and the musical attachments to these images are just amazing.

    I will also say a few bad things about it.

    There are places in the story where we have to play some rather tedious mini-games. This may be to avoid congestion of people going through the game, or it may be the producer's intention to lead us to a catharsis.
    But let's face it, if it's a hassle, it's a hassle.

    It may indeed be distressing for the creators that the content in the game is consumed so quickly by so many people, but that doesn't make us hate the game. Besides, people with different interests will pass on information to each other, and the various fun aspects of this game will spread over time as new fun.
    Anyway, I think the most important thing is tempo. It may be difficult, but I would like to see more text to entertain us in areas that seem to be redundant and stretch out the playtime.

    On the other hand, I will tell you that in terms of the system, some of the redundant stuff could be simplified and made more playable.

    The new jobs feel great, though I think Sage needs a bit of a buff so dungeons trash pulls feel more comfortable. Reaper is hugely satisfying and fun to play. The other jobs in the game, while I've not played all of them yet, (I will) They seem to build off the successful Shadowbringers formula and add to them to make them slightly more complex and I look forward to optimize some of these jobs in savage content.

    Music is absolutely amazing, even the ambient music has you head bobbing, and battle music just slaps.

    The zone design in this expansion is probably the better than it has ever been. Previous expansion zones seemed like they were lazily put together, Shadowbringers did a lot to improve on that, and Endwalker is better still. Seems like there is a new thing to discover in every zone, and I fly around often just admiring the vistas and exploring.

    All in all this game has my head spinning with how crazy things got in the story. Best Final Fantasy story ever.    … Expand

    Mmo part isnt grindy at all, you just play the way you want to, and it is very refreshing to come back every one's in a while and find new things to do)

    Since 1997, FFVII has been my favourite Final Fantasy. No longer. Endwalker is a heartwarming, heartrending, sublime cap to the 8-10 year Zodiark/Hydaelyn story and an all-round amazing experience. This game is simply one of the best in the business.

    I cried out of joy and emotion.
    Even more, the content of the story rises to the level of philosophy in this expansion.
    It's a story that is definitely a miraculous tribute to the life of a man who strives to live.

    Queue errors indeed caused me a lot of gripe. But if I set those aside, my mind has been blown away by the quality of the story and how well it ties up a decade of story telling. My expectations were high to begin with but Endwalker exceeded them. Unforgettable story, music and more, my hat goes off to the wonderful team behind Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, bravo.

While we only have access to a couple of "endgame" fights at the moment, they are pretty fun and unique, and there isn't much reason to doubt the raid tiers and other extreme encounters will falter thanks to the dev team's constant expanding of ideas on their encounter front. Class design is also very well done and realized. While a couple of classes seem a little left behind as is the usual with these types of games and MMOs, everyone is still viable, and some very needed reworks were handed out to the classes that really needed them for Summoner and Monk. If you like XIV already, then you will most likely love this expansion and don't need a review to tell you otherwise, but if you're an outsider looking in, there is a free trial and we would love to have you, and if you put in the time, you won't be disappointed.… Expand

    I have been an avid player since release. While the server congestion issues persist, I still am able to thoroughly enjoy the game on one of the busiest servers.     The best story I have ever played in a game. This is now my favorite game of all time. The story is larger than most rpgs. The way they have build up the story/characters up and how it nicely wraps it all together in this epic finale is nothing short of stellar. This game has given me faith in gaming again as a whole.

    Great run so far, content was fantastic and although some queue times they have been explained and transparent about it. Being a non-lore player most of the time I still enjoyed the game greatly and found the amount of content (this is my first FF14 expansion release) to be insane compared to other MMO's I have played. Great job Yoshi and team!

    1- The story, as a conclusion of a 10 year history is on a level of a MCU
    2- The Music, Soken is a masterful musician and the choice of remaster made it so much more emotional
    3- have friends that are badass thugs, and found themselfs crying over a game story...

    This is an epic conclusion for an epic game, i had the opportunity to play FFXIV since patch 2.1 and is perfect, lovely, the game works perfectly and the story is pure gold ( for an MMORPG standard) i highly recommend this game if you like this kind of videogames 10/10

    A massively long story driven semi-single player experience (you can do all dungeons with your fellow "Trust" NPC's) with very fun endgame that challenges even the biggest no-lifers with its "Ultimate" content.

    Amazing expansion, definitely lived up to the hype. Imo it has the best regions of any expansion. The dungeons and trials are amazing as well equal or better to the other expansions for me. The story is very very good but I still prefer Shadowbringers story slightly. The music was amazing as well about equal to SHBs amazing music.

    Man, this expansion has been incredible, and in my opinion it's worth more than a full price AAA-title.
    It started strong, and then after a short    When Shadowbringers was released I was sure, that they wouldn't be able to top it, because it was so incredibly good, and usually when something is outstandingly good, the sequel is usually a letdown. This is not the case with Endwalker.
    Man, this expansion has been incredible, and in my opinion it's worth more than a full price AAA-title.

    It started strong, and then after a short while it blasted me with something that I expected to be the final boss of the game, which confused me a lot, since I was still around level 83 and max level is 90. I was asking myself "How the hell are they gonna top this now?" and this has become an ongoing pattern of Square Enix delivering something massive, only to deliver something more massive later, and it kept going like this until the real final boss at level 90.

    The pacing of the story was a bit slow at some earlier points, and the fact that you didn't get to fight for quite a while during the first quarter of the xpac was a bit annoying it times, but all of this was just temporary, as the story kept getting more intense and intense.

    After finishing the story I was absolutely speechless. I was happy, I was sad, I was crying, I was smiling, I was feeling pumped, all of that at the same time. Never has a game, nor any kind of movie, book or story moved me so much, and at this point I consider the story of Final Fantasy XIV to be the best piece of fiction I've ever gone through, making even my all time favourites like Babylon 5, Lord of the Rings, the MCU movies, Naruto, One Piece, Gurren Lagann, Mass Effect, Fallout, Neverwinter Nights, Golden Sun, Chrono Trigger, the Mana series, Terranigma, Earthbound, Undertale and the Witcher absolutely pale in comparison. They don't get even close to what I felt at the end of Endwalker.

    Now story aside, regarding some gameplay aspects. They made vast improvements to the game. Skills and casts feel way more responsive now, and changes to the classes & jobs in the game have improved a lot of things. The overhauled aethernet teleport system is a massive quality of life improvement and with the removal of belts, which were just unnecessary, a good amount of inventory space has been added.

    The new features of having NPCs following you around during the story were a really nice addition to game immersion, and despite its controversial reception I liked the new escort and follow minigames that were a recurring part of the story.

    One major complaint I've always had with FFXIV expansions since Heavensward was, that the new zones often look like large, mostly flat, empty areas with a major lack of detail. This has changed in this expansion. All the new zones look very rich and detailed, even the third zone which you expect to be very empty based on the lore.
    They have a lot of verticality and the terrain feels more natural with lots of hills, elevation, and comparatively few invisible walls.

    Then there's the music. Oh, the music...
    Usually in a FFXIV xpac the music is fairly good, with only 1-2 tracks being rather bad/annoying and 1-2 tracks being noticably great. This expansion however we only have 1 annoying song (Labyrinthos daytime music), but a vast amount of strong, emotional music that fits the setting.
    The music in the third zone fills you with a permanent unease and sense of hopelessness like in games like This War of Mine, Frostpunk or Fallout. The music that plays during social cutscenes feels cozy and calming. The themes of the recurring NPCs fill you with joy and pride, as well as nostalgia. And the music of each bossfight unleashes a feeling of epicness that fits the setting, especially the music of the very final fight, which I'm constantly listening to since I've finished the game.

    I could go on and on and on with my praise for this expansion, but this would probably exceeed the character limit here on metacritic, so I'll finish with these words:

    Final Fantasy XIV is a fantastic story game that I can recommend to anyone who likes fantasy in any way. It may start a bit slow, but it quickly gets better and better.
    And once you've finished playing this amazing story game you're getting a great MMORPG with regular content patches every 3.5 months on top of it, for the typical sub based MMO fee.    … Expand

    It’s Shadowbringers level plus one. The amazing thing about this expansion and MMO is it’ll be just as good years from now. Most MMOs are completely different experiences at launch but this masterpiece will last and be just as good to new players as newer content is released.

    I hope we can achieve a better balance with this expansion, but that can only show the future.

    Only issue is its launch but that was expected! For a large number of wow refugees shifting to ffxiv

    Its so good. This MMO is the best out there. Minus login issues right now. Endwalker was really good

    If you didn’t like FFXIV before now, Endwalker will do nothing to change your mind. But if you’re in, this emotional rollercoaster will be rolling towards a satisfying conclusion, that absolutely will not disappoint.

    FFXIV is currently the best MMORPG available. The main reason is because it’s RPG first, MMO second. The story isn’t just an afterthought, but an integral part of the experience, and everything else revolves around the tale of the Warrior of Light. It’s logical, well-planned, and presented with great, voiced (or not) cut-scenes.
