I haven't actually played Far Cry 2 beyond the first 40 minutes, Far Cry 3 was kind of boring from the first hour on and I haven't been interested enough to even try Far Cry 4 yet, with that all said, I've actually been enjoying Far Cry Primal quite a bit since I picked it up a few weeks ago. So far, the aesthetic, the world, the gameplay and the B.C. early Homosapien theme to the whole thing have really hooked me in. I'm finding that just exploring, fighting off wild beasts, hunting, gathering, and in general just playing the GAME has been highly rewarding. One of the few caveats would be that the crafting system works like a magical fence that keeps the player from actually accessing different components or utilities early on, but I don't find it particularly tedious. This is mostly because they've done a good job with the setting in which the game takes place, it's very arcade-like for a first person shooter obviously, and the more I play it the more it reminds me of the original Far Cry, without the majority of that game's often balance breaking issues or Artificial intelligence blunders. Sure, you can say that it's cheap, lazy and genuinely uncreative of the developers to basically recycle the same map from another Far Cry game, but I think of Primal as more of modification or conversion and on paper it may have sounded silly, but in action it works quite well. Far Cry Primal isn't realistic, you tame beasts with the press of a button, you use a fairly sophisticated bow for the late Mesolithic era, and it does leave you wanting a little bit more to play around with as far as weapons go, but for lack of a better word, this "primitive" scope that you work with makes the game very engrossing. I often find myself running, crawling, and trekking across different parts of the map. The fast travel is fine, since you have frequent campfires you can utilize as well. It's not a simulation to begin with so having to travel this whole map on foot from point A to B and back would get fairly tedious. I thought the speech specialists did a wonderful job of bringing the world to life, and making it highly enjoyable to hear dialogue from that time and place. I feel somewhat biased with this game, this is a portion of human history that I find very interesting. Africa with guns is marginally less interesting at the end of the day and Far Cry Primal isn't the best game ever made, but it's very enjoyable for what it is and the experience it seeks to give the player. To put it very simple - the game is extremley medicore. They put a well known Far Cry formula into the new setting, and don't change much at all. Its all the same, but with a little different twist. Comeon Ubisoft, you can do better then that. I love the constant search for crafting materials, I like the enemy tribe design, I loved being able to tame animals to accompany you and scare off enemies, the owl was awesome for taking over outposts and bonfires without even setting foot in them. The environment design was brilliant, I almost never got stuck wandering around the base of a hill with no way up, there are slopes and grappling hook points everywhere. Only problem was the Izala final boss was a pain in the butt to kill. I've replayed this game twice and I now don't even bother with her because it's not fun for me. The Udam boss was no problem but with her it was just attack, take out reinforcements, repeat, to the point where you have hardly any resources left to make weapons. Aside from that, this was one of my favourite games to add to my replay roster. If you don't like collecting, crafting, taming and taking out outposts then this is probably not the game for you Expand

I can't even bring myself to write a full review for this after the crushing disappointment that I feel now, having just uninstalled it. Suffice it to say that the free-roam and random mission gameplay is excellent! I know that those who crave the Rambo-esque style of gunplay from the former titles will likely look at the clubs and spears as a step back for the series, but I really appreciate "going Medieval" over "rapid fire" any day -- so this was right up my alley.

It's the boss fights that *completely* destroy the experience. What a travesty. I should have seen it coming after the first ridiculous "Great Hunts" (against signature animals). Rather than it functioning like anything remotely connected to a HUNT...it's simply an exercise in eye-rolling frustration as you die over and over again taking down a bear or sabre-toothed tiger with more hit points than an M1 Abrams tank. Employ strategy? Nope. Set up a tactical ambush using the environment? Nope. Craft special foods to give yourself the particular edge to emerge victorious? Nope. Tame a certain animal that can exploit the beast's weakness? Nope.

You just run around like a lunatic unloading every trap, bomb, spear, club, arrow, throwing shard, and tamed beast in your arsenal while the "Great Beast" simply one-shots or maybe two-shots everything it touches and moves around at about 150% the normal speed. After reloading 4 or 5 times to frantically mash attack buttons, you'll be able to subdue it.

Which gives you the ability to tame and use this monstrosity and all of its supernatural abilities -- right???

    Nope.

As soon as you defeat it, it seems to become a normal beast with a different look. So you can't even use it effectively against other "Great Beasts", as it will be put down just as fast as everything else.

And the boss fights against human villains are even WORSE. The fight against Ull is the single lamest, stupidest, most un-immersive, boss fight I think I've ever encountered in a video game since the 1980's. For a brief while, I thought, "No...I'm missing something! I have to be. This must work like Dark Souls -- a pattern I need to find...or a specific weakness..."

    NOPE.

Just using a few, one-off, environmental damage positions before spamming every available attack ad nauseam for over 15 minutes while Ull just continues wandering around, taking spear after spear after spear, club after club after club, arrow after arrow after arrow...and simply not dying. On...and on...and on...an on...

But -- BUT -- Surely, the other bosses won't be like this! SURELY -- it was just this fight because it's, like, Ull's special thing. Right? Surely!!!

    >

I'm not even going into the fight against Batari. Instant un-installation.

What the @#$% happened, Ubisoft??? What in honest, living creation!? I have to award this at least a 4 for the ~20 hours of incredible enjoyment the free-play provided...the beautiful world...the really neat Survival Mode... But what should have been one of the most rewarding parts of the game -- tackling the major antagonists and advancing the story -- left me trembling in rage at the utter, pointless, frustrating, monotonous, cheap, trifling execution. It's completely unforgivable. I simply have to ensure the game is in the red.

And, I'm sorry. I have never seen a title so instantly destroy every single thing that makes it enjoyable for the sake of "padding the length". The effect is awful. Learn from this disaster. Please.

A very underrated game. I think Ubi did a fantastic job given the restraints of the setting. The amount of polish is incredible in some aspects, they basically invented a language based on speculative linguistics, then made 3 dialects of that language for the three different tribes in the game, then taught the language to the voice actors so they could speak it with the right intonation and knowing the grammar and meaning of words. The score is also fantastic and contributes greatly to the atmosphere.

They could have done a better job with the resource management, either simplify it or make it so there's still an incentive to keep hunting and gathering which becomes pointless pretty fast. Some of the side quests are repetitive but you unlock the skills you need pretty quick anyway.

Technically the game is 9/10 and runs nice and smooth. I'm rating it overall 9/10 because the 5.0 user average is just unfair for this game.

    Definitely not a bad game.
    Some say it's a spinoff to FC4, I don't agree.
This was like something new. However, obviously at those times (BC) there wasn't many stuff to do, and seems like Ubi abused this by adding literally NOTHING to the game. Weapons are so limited, story is broken with unrelated pieces of missions, and the game engine itself so repetitive. Go get this go get that and

Ubisoft does with Far Cry Primal what it does best.
You get an open world, lot of running, interacting, new animals, crafting, challenging fight, stealth and so on.
I do very much like the previous FC3 and 4 games for exactly the same reason.

Far Cry Primal is a first person action adventure survival game set in the Stone Age.
You play as Takkar, just a regular hunter, who’s then tasked by a woman he runs into to go rescue some of her people and instantly become the leader of a new tribe…
There’s very little emphasis on narrative here, just a quick introduction and then you’re free to do whatever you want… but there is incentive to follow through with helping your tribe mates…
This for the most part is a recourse gathering game…
By gathering resources you can craft better weapons, build huts to upgrade your village and unlock skills.. And of course craft food items to help you survive…
That’s basically it... explore the world... hunt animals for their skins…
You can even eventually tame them to help you in combat…
There are of course human enemies to deal with.. not just aggressive animals…
Outside of the 14 hour campaign you can liberate areas to unlock fast travel points, and you can do side quests for characters you meet in the woods…
Your tamed animals help you with a simple call.. they’ll even stealth with you if you go into stealth mode …
Your weapon option is about as varied as you’d expect for the stone age, you get a club, sling, spear, bow and arrows, traps, and bombs.. all of which you have to craft as you use them…
None of your tools are indestructible, thankfully wood is vast and as you upgrade your crafting skills, you get more recourses, and get more out of those recourses.. so slowly less annoying…
What doesn’t get less annoying though is enemies…
A great immersion breaker is that enemies are harder or easier to kill depending on the section of the map you’re in for no apparent reason…
This isn’t a JRPG.. This is an open world game... I don’t want enemies to scale with me... I want to feel powerful after sinking all of my skill points and crafted materials into stronger weapons…
What does make me feel powerful though is hopping on the back of a majestic mammoth and slinging enemies into the air…
You can ride any large creature you tame once you progress far enough into the story…
There’s such a great balance here of gameplay incentive…
There’s reason to play through the story to unlock new abilities, and there’s reason to ignore the story for a little while to get better weapons, and new skills…
You can’t do it all sticking to one side of the game, and I love that…
And hunting for rare animals and reaching for rare materials is just as fun as attacking a settlement on the back of a caber toothed tiger and taking it for my own…
There are also these cool witcher contract type missions deep in the game where you get to go on a hunt for a legendary animal that’s been terrorizing the land… Looking for clues, setting up traps, and then weakening them down to finally be able to claim them for yourself to call to fight by your side at any time…
A lot of the main missions for the most part have to do with searching for clues and following paths with your hunter vision, which works like eagle vision from assassins creed, or a witcher sense in the witcher the 3…
It highlights animals, plants.. and points of interest…
Its highly annoying that this vision has a timer though…
I don’t know why ubisoft ruined this awesome tool from Assassins Creed… they ruined it in Unity too…
It’s not fun having to constantly click r3 and wait for a cool down every few seconds when I’m trying to follow a path…
    Stop doing this ubisoft..
Thankfully you can call your cool little owl friend to fly around the sky to get a larger view of the path since this function is so unnecessarily annoying…
This is a very ubisoft game… If you don’t like the idea of map cleaning in your games... this isn’t the one for you…
Map cleaning is pretty hit and miss for me, but thankfully I enjoyed it here…
This world is ridiculous... it feels alive… you can ride mammoths…
    what more do you want?
    I give Far Cry Primal
    an 8.0/10

    - your own tribe has no SOUL in them, You do not build any relationship with them.
    - shallow characters - they are there just to give you fetch quest, nothing more.
    - used map is big flaw.
    - enemies - they are interesting, but you don't have much opportunities to know them better.
    - weapons - the biggest flaw are weapons, there is not many of them and they are mostly the same.
    - owl - that is just ridiculous
    - death of your animals - there is no penalty what so ever. You just bring new one.
    - ecosystem - it's just **** Far Cry 4, WTF?

+ Stealth take-downs are fun as always
    + Fire

    1) First scene, the hunters let an isolated mammoth go that was behind a small rock wall !!! Ideal for attacking. Then you had to sneak through a dangerous mammoth herd, the fellow hunters set you on fire with friendly fire etc.
    2) You finally hunted a mammoth, then a tiger turns up. You can't fire a spear and everyone just looks at it in awe until they get butchered. Then your idiot protagonist wakes up from tejh trance and runs with a friend. Of course you drop your only weapon (life insurance). I mean a weapon is always teh first you drop when facing an enemy.
    3) You find the traces of a possibly friendly hunter and follow it in the night with a torch !!! In the intro they talk about maneater tribes .... I am sure you like to be the target of possible enemies. Plus it is questionable whether the friendly hunter, who totally will not expect you reacts ... you could be a maneater.
    4) That person manages to walk through a thornbush wall where you can't and you have to burn it !!! I always make big fires in a forest, I love to be grilled by a forest fire. Of course the nerd programmers were too stupid to know that, so you did not have that problem. It rained enough to keep the forest too wet and the sun only dried the thornbush wall ....

This is where I stopped playing this nonsense. One thing I know, none of the nerd devs would survive 30 minutes in the stone age ....
A good engine that could have made a great story and gameplay in the right hands. Typical AAA company, managers can pay armies fo artists, but their management kills creativity to zero. The Quality management gets a script what they have to look for and such eliminate tech problems, but don't see that the game sucks heap, since that was not on their checklist.

I thouroughly enjoyed this game. It's a refreshing spinoff of the main series. If you like killing stealthy and always prefered bows over firearms, then fighting enemies will feel almost the same as in other FC games.

Far Cry Primal is a DLC sold for 60 bucks. Some reskins, copy-paste the map of FC4, and that's it. Selling a game like this for that price is an offense itself.

This is imo the worst entry to the Far Cry franchise. The story revolves around you building up your village and increase it's population and basically eradicate the other two factions.

It seems the game took inspiration from other survival games popular on pc but implemented a way to simple and boring crafting system to appeal to the console masses. The game is way to easy aswell, I played on normal and I recomend anyone looking to play this game to start on hard. And playing it on the hardest difficulty still doesn't make it a "survival game".
First things first when playing this game is unchecking the gathering animation as it does nothing but waste time and annoy you. You will be stopping and detouring on your way to your destinations ALOT.
Traversing this world is not as fun as in FC3 and 4 with the lack of a wing suit. And what they did add, the ability to have a pet beast, some even ridable does not make up for that. I found the beasts useless and annoying for the most part.
You also have very few weapon and attack variety making the action bland long term.
It is a huge game though with alot to do, all the ubisoft standard side activities are here but there is still no replay value to this game and there is no multiplayer to extend it's life beyond finishing it once. The story is nothing special but it isn't bad. The new made up language is pretty cool and very convincing.
As for how the game runs, it's not that good either. My fps ranged from 57-63 with occasional drops to 50ish (1080p/ultra). And I'm playing on an i7 4770K, 16GB ram and a Titan Black card, the performance should be better.
Imo the main value of this game is potentially mildly entertaining you for long periods of time IF you absolutely have nothing better to do or play.

This game is definitely not recommended on the PC.

PC port: 0/10 Gameplay: 6/10(I would've given it higher if it offered new things, but it is the same Far Cry formula since Far Cry 3) Story: 2/10 at best(really uninteresting) Graphics: 9/10(even I'll admit that the graphics are beautiful) Don't get this on the PC in any price. Get it on consoles if it has a sale. I wish Ubisoft

Don't get this on the PC in any price. Get it on consoles if it has a sale. I wish Ubisoft put more effort into the PC port. I also wish this game was more different. All the other main Far Cry games(expect Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 1's expansions) were different. Even though Far Cry 4 was basically a copy of Far Cry 3, I still had fun with it and the PC port was decent enough(but was not great). Now that Far Cry Primal is also basically another Far Cry 3, I cannot in my right mind excuse Ubisoft for their actions. It's getting very redundant. I remember the Far Cry series as being innovative(up until Far Cry 4 was released) and original. It was a Ubisoft series that I was happy that it didn't fall into the milking processes of Ubisoft, but sadly, it is now. This game had potential to be one of the best survival games.

Had to make an account here on Metacritic just to throw a review at Far Cry Primal. I've always been a big Far Cry fan, having played all the previous games of the series extensively, and I used to jokingly say to my friends that Far Cry is the one franchise that Ubisoft haven't ruined yet. Now I can't say that any longer. Far Cry Primal is by far the worst game of the series, gettingHad to make an account here on Metacritic just to throw a review at Far Cry Primal. Now I can't say that any longer. Far Cry Primal is by far the worst game of the series, getting attacked by random wildlife every 5 seconds while trying to stealthily attack an enemy outpost is a pain in the ass, not "immersive", and having to go hunting every 5 minutes to craft ammunition just gets boring really really fast. I would recommend you pick up one of the older Far Cry games instead, which are all far better than this piece of junk.

    Well done Ubisoft...

I have been playing for awhile now and I am enjoying it, however it does get a bit boring as time goes on. There are no real challengers or surprises. Its the same as the other Far Cry series but without the guns

Another milked to death, overly-formulaic, weak-plotted, crafting-for-the-sake-of-crafting, unlocking-for-the-sake-of-unlocking, 'conveyor belt' sequel from "We don't make games, only franchises" Ubisoft... For the love of God will you please start making some NEW GAMES, not just exactly the same game over and over and over and over and over with interchangeable texture packs & C-movie backstories swapped out each year...

I played this game and then fired up FC 3 and FC 4 and it's funny now this game has less interesting environments even compared to FC 3 and no soul. One of the main appeals of FC was unlocking fresh guns to keep your arsenal new and exciting, this time around I hope you can stomach pocking things and driving an arrow through someone's head for the entire game. One of the main appeals of FC was unlocking fresh guns to keep your arsenal new and exciting, this time around I hope you can stomach pocking things and driving an arrow through someone's head for the entire game. Taming animals got old real fast and wasn't all that exciting. The extra weapons like the arrows that drug the enemies have been done before recently in ACS. The game is just one big fetch quest and stealth kill mechanics has lost its novelty. Also hearing Adam Jensen say mumbo jumbo to mimic the tribal language pisses me off even more and ironically makes the game feel even more fake and forced. This game is just a dictionary definition of a reskin Expand

For 20$ have to say good farcry mod. Only problem I have is that it won't support DTS but as it's only mod and costs 20$ I didn't expect perfection. gg

The hackneyed story doesn't detract from the thrilling world and new challenges of 10,000BC. [Issue#249, p.45]

There is a seed of a fascinating game hidden somewhere in Far Cry: Primal, but, I’m afraid, someone else will have to find it and grow it.

Primitive gameplay cycle of Far Cry, placed in primitive world, suddenly starts to make sense, and even story doesn’t feel as barebones and perfunctory as usual. Here, you’re not playing as a skinny frat boy who suddenly discovers a talent for killing hardened soldiers but ultimately just wants to get back to civilization – you’re a hunter who simply wants to become respectable leader of his tribe with a personal luxury cave.
