This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whilst Evoland was a straight-up pisstake of the RPG genre, Evoland 2 does something genuinely impressive by juggling both being a pisstake of most game genres and actually being quite good in all of those genres. One minute it's a topdown RPG, the next you're doing a puzzle a la Professor Layton, later you're doing stealth, and after that it becomes a Metroidvania - and this is all in the first two hours. It's fantastic and I would reccommend it any day. Expand

Well one thing make this game totaly lame -- streetfighter boss. It was insanely lame to add such janre in "RPG". With such addition this game is barely playable.

A few nitpicks and poorly explained things aside, Evoland 2 vastly improves the original game in every way. It gives a story that's entertaining, has tons of gameplay styles, and it's graphics are neat. It's clear that the concept still needs some fine tuning, but it's definitely worth it's asking price.

One of my main complaints about Evoland was that it felt too short and rushed. Well that was fixed in Evoland 2. The story has more depth; the game is longer and it feels more like a full game. The story has more depth; the game is longer and it feels more like a full game. That is sadly where my praise of it as the better of the two ends because it found ways to take two steps back in other directions. They removed turn based combat entirely from Evoland 2 in favour of just having real time combat. As someone who enjoyed the turn based combat more than the real time in Evoland this was a disappointing move. The puzzles found a way to be annoying much of the time as I found many to be nonsensical and beaten more by trial and error than by logic. Basically I can say that I beat them but not why. I know what I did but most of the time it made no sense. The game managed to have some pet peeves of mine such as battles I wasn’t supposed to win (which makes even trying pointless). The humour was a saving grace of the game and as good with the references to older games as the original was. The game still lacked a map system and objective list. The game would tell me what I needed to do in passing but gave no indication as to where it was and gave no map system to give me an idea of where to look. The game also had re-spawning enemies like the original which I am not a fan of.

I played Evoland 2 on Linux. It froze on me one time. There were no graphics options, not even a full-screen option. The game auto saves at certain points and unlike the original has a save icon that is clearly visible so I know when it was happening. There are also still save points scattered throughout the map but they are time based so after using them you can’t use them again for a period of time. I didn’t notice any spelling errors. I played the game with a Logitech F310 game-pad which worked without issue.

    Disk Space Used: 881MB
    Input Used: Logitech F310
Save System: Checkpoints and Save Stations

    GPU Usage: 4-20 %
    VRAM Usage: 432-667 MB
    CPU Usage: 2-6 %
    RAM Usage: 2.4-2.7 GB

To it’s credit Evoland 2 fixed some of what I disliked about the original but it also had things that went unfixed or were made worse. I liked the new characters and the way the story was going but between the annoying puzzles; the lack of direction and specifically really disliking the Biblos battle I did not finish Evoland 2. I spent seven hours and fifty one minutes on the sequel before quitting. I paid $5.49 CAD for the Evoland Legendary Edition so you could say I paid $2.75 CAD for Evoland 2. The value here was fine for the content but not for the enjoyment I got. Even though the original was shorter and went too fast it was the more enjoyable of the two games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wish this game was good. There's something here. An idea that could have been a great game, but instead we get a half baked slog though bad renditions of nostalgic game genres.

The selling point of this game is its different game types. Similar to the first game, you 'evolve' the world by unlocking different aspects of the gaming world. In the first game you use this a few times as a puzzle solving tool, but in this game it is mearly a tool to set up the story and then the concept is droped; favoring plot points to change the gameplay. Its an interesting concept, but it falls flat when it is left behind in favor for the games bland story.

The game types themselves are much more varied in this game as opposed to the first. Unfortunately, they are executed very poorly. The game sets itself up as a RPG, but throughout the game different events will change the game type for brief moments before the game unceremoniously drops you back into the main game playstyle. While the idea of the playstyle changing to fit the plot is an amazing idea, this game manages to mess it up. Outside of the RPG style (which has its own issues) each segment is poorly cobbled togeather caricatures of iconic game genres. Each one plays as the worse of each genre it imitates to the point that some segments are practically unplayable in their intended form. Each segment comes up unexpectidly and is gone again before you get the hang of what you are doing, which is a blessing in disguise because you will soon realize that each one is worse than the last.

Eventually you will realize that all you want to do is play the RPG segments without bothering with everything else and here in lies the main issue regarding the game. The RPG aspect of the game is the only part that is remotely polished, but it is only used as an inbetween for the secondary playstyles. The RPG segments are only a go-between for the secondary segments. It fragments the play experience. The secondary segments become obstacle for the main gameplay, instead of a reward for playing well and figuring out whatever puzzle in the main game. The RPG segments feel more like running between minigames in a poorly designed Wii game's overworld.

The plot does this game no favors. It is unoriginal at best. An almost direct ripoff of Chrono Trigger at worst. It's generic, bland and adds nothing to the gameplay besides giving you another place to go. Instead of taking the interesting concept of this game and creating a well thought out and clever story around it, the game tells the same store any other 16-bit RPG tells. Go here, find this, save her. The story could have been so much more; giving an actual commentary about the motifs of the genres that this game emulates.

Gameplay issues aside, the game does have some upsides. The visual assets look amazing. The art direction is on point and follows through to almost all aspects of the game, despite the various styles. The FX are decent, but the music falls a little flat. At best it's forgetable background music.

The performance issues are really the final nail in this game's coffin. There is no excuse for a game like this for function so poorly. The game itself lags (horribly at times) despite not being a particularly taxing game. There a few platforming segments that are practically unplayable because of this. Turning the graphics settings all the way down lessens some issues, but really there is no excuse. It shouldn't be an issue in the first place.

The main complaint about the first game is that it was too short, but after seeing this one, I would say that was for the best. In playing Evoland 2 you will realize what you loved about old games. They did what they did, and they did it well. This game does none of that, instead opting to play on your nostalgia in the hopes that you don't realize how mediocre this game is.

TL;DR The games alright if you really need the nostalgia fix, but even then, there are better option. It's a quaint idea, but its execution leaves a lot to be desired. 6/10

The game would have been higher except for the multiple stealing of game concepts.
A top down shooter. wasn't too bad after I figured out that I could just hold CTRL and it would keep shooting. But forcing a person to complete this in order to continue with the game? NO! This needed to be a bonus side game. Then you go and steal Mortal Kombat game play. THIS IS A RPG!!!!!!!
    Fortunately I

Fortunately I found a cheat to win that battle.
It's been a few weeks now and I don't remember why, but I deleted the game because of stupid things like what I mentioned. There was something I had to do and I said F**K it, this sucks.
This was an unfortunate discovery as I loved the first one.

If Evoland was something like a history check in the evolution of gaming - with graphics and gameplay gradually improving with no real story, Evoland 2 is the playground of that same evolution, everything starts simples gradually evolves and then is a free for all, going all over the place.
Evoland 2 strikes more genres than the first like 2D fighting games, space shooters and gives a mini game that I found to be addicting and very fun.
I love the fact that the game tackles different genres proving that, story-wise, it is better to change the gameplay for a better feel of the moment.
If the characters are simple, and the story can be confusing or too simple sometimes, the time travelling with the different graphics, physics and gameplay make you forget all that.

Instead it focuses more in sections with mechanics from different game genres. That's fun and surprising but it's also easy that one or more of this game sections are annoying as nobody likes the same type of games. Too long and not super well implemented sections also helps some of these parts become annoying.

Out of this specific sections or mini-games the game is 90% a standard RPG, with many details that resembles already existing games.
Overall a good RPG with a good and long story, some humor and that's fun to play.

Evoland 2 is a game that will appeal mostly to longtime RPG aficionados. It's not a perfect execution of its wonderful concept, but it's still a successful showcase of various gameplay styles and formats that's sure to make you smile and reminisce about your fondest gaming memories.

Evoland 2 does everything better, with clever jokes, a host of great references and (surprisingly) a great story to go along with it. Surely, there's some lame ideas along the way, but overall this is a history lesson you don't want to miss.
