    If you can look past the somewhat-dated graphics and the empty expanses of space that will greet you in the multiplayer zones, Evochron will suck away your time and keep you enthralled for many an hour.

    Once you're over the especially steep learning curve you'll be able to play around in an extremely huge space sandbox.

I'm a a game developer myself as well as a long-time fan of the space sim genre.

    The videogame industry has produced quite a few decent "Space-themed RPG" games (Freelancer, EVE online, etc) - which I greatly enjoyed and spent hours playing - yet I wouldn't really call them "simulators".

    On the other hand - there are several true SIMULATOR games - one could take a look at aircraft simulators (Lock On, anything from the DCS series). Or at Silent Hunter (3 or 4 will do), or "Dangerous Waters" - for an example of a decent submarine simulator.

    And here comes Evochron - and uniquely combines the "Space" and "Simulator" worlds. One competitor I can think of is StarShatter, which has greater variety of ships, but doesn't have as much complexity and depth put into each of them - just looking at the HUD in StarShatter reveals how much simpler the controls and mechanics are. Leave alone that carrier-level gameplay in SS is effectively playing an RTS. Evo gives you only a small ship, think fighter jet - but it gives you A LOT of it. Reminds me of an old (~2000-ish) F-18 Hornet simulator. You had but one playable jet and like 20 types of weapons for it - but believe me mastering those weapons, in addition to all the built-in systems of the jet - took a while, and was very rewarding.

    Based on a brief evaluation of it's predecessor - Evochron Mercenary - Evo Legacy retains the same concept but is a step up in terms of graphics as well as tutorial quality. It adds a good amount of complexity too. Evo Merc's graphics' and planet detail quality were a bit low for me. Yes you have seamless planetary "landings" but there's vegetation with leaves visible from space which just gives away how small the planets really are and breaks immersion. Somehow that was fixed in Legacy, along with overall increase in LOD.

    The tutorial in Evo Legacy seems a lot longer and more detailed as well - might be a combination of the game getting more complex, and the tutorials for the same game systems having more details put into.

    I haven't played the game much to say about the long-term value - i.e. how fast do the missions get repetitive, is difficulty balance adequate - but I do appreciate games that present a challenge and require the player to master the controls and concept before being able to defeat an enemy in the campaign. Games such as Starlancer and Freelancer lacked such difficulty, in EVE it is found only in PvP with other players, and, perhaps, in high-level W-space where the NPCs will keep killing you in most head-on gunz-blazing attempts to attack them.

    I have huge respect for a person to pull off a game with this level of complexity by themselves.
    The controls will certainly be overwhelming for someone coming in from DarkStar one or some console game, but anyone who's played either a real aircraft sim or one of the submarine sims mentioned above - and is passionate about spaceships too - will likely be delighted to see simulator-level complexity here.
    The graphics are a significant step up from Evo Mercenary. Don't expect level of detail similar to Star Citizen (a project with a $40m+ budget and a huge team, which is years overdue at this point) and just watch the planetary descent seamless transition from space to atmosphere landscape - never implemented in any videogame to date.

    I look forward to exploring the huge map of Evochron, the procedurally-generated encounters, and the complexity of combat with the wide variety of weapon systems that all have different specs and uses. This does seem like a game that would require one to do their homework and understand a weapon before just firing it away - much like EVE and so unlike most RPGs with their endless grind for a Best-In-Slot gear - instead of just learning to properly use each of a fixed set of standard weapons.

    One thing I was disappointed about in Evo Legacy is lack of a ship damage model - where subsystems of a ship can get damaged: engines - lose power, guns/radar - break down, maneuvering systems - get screwy, fuel - starts leaking, etc. Those would be so easy to implement! But no - just a one-dimensional "Hull health bar" :-| Oh well, that's just a minor detail, implemented in most aircraft sims, that I was somehow expecting to find here.    … Full Review »

    Varios años (4, para ser exactos y que se dice pronto) tras la salida de Evochron Mercenary 2.X llega su esperada secuela, Legacy,    ¡Buenas!

    Varios años (4, para ser exactos y que se dice pronto) tras la salida de Evochron Mercenary 2.X llega su esperada secuela, Legacy, la que puedo analizar en profundidad ya que formé parte del pequeño equipo de 6 alpha testers y llevo disfrutando (entre bug y bug :P) de este juego desde abril de 2015.

    Lo primero que vemos al arrancar el juego es la mejora gráfica, que quizás no llegue a los estándares actuales de la industria aunque supera con creces a Mercenary pero bueno, para ser un juego creado por una sola persona es algo que se perdona, ¿no? :P

    Analizaré punto a punto aunque empezaré comparando, como es habitual en este tipo de casos, con sus predecesores:

    Shawn vuelve a dejarnos un juego optimizado (La gran pega de los indies hoy en día) que funciona en casi cualquier pc de los últimos 10 años (Yo juego en un i3 con tarjeta Intel integrada y 4 gb de ram) escuchando a los fans, (Algunas de las cosas de Legacy son sugerencias mías, por ejemplo, así como en Mercenary 2.X fue la sugerencia de mostrar la velocidad real (Empuje+fuerzas)) así que vayamos pasito a pasito:

    El juego
    Si estás leyendo este análisis porque no sabes de qué va el juego, será mejor que te pases por la Evopedia: La enciclopedia del Universo Evochron en Español[spacesims.es] y solventes allí tus dudas, que para eso la he escrito (Y continuaré escribiendo sobre Legacy cuando terminemos la traducción)

    2.X vs Legacy
    Hay muchísimas diferencias entre Mercenary y Legacy como podréis deducir, aunque estas son las más visibles:

    Gráficamente ha tenido un gran salto el juego, todo es nuevo salvo los diseños de loso Vonari, el resto es TODO re-hecho. Para continuar, los planetas son un 400% más grandes que en Mercenary y las naves también lo son, sobre todo las naves capitales y los cargueros de batalla, donde ahora podremos entrar para coger misiones de combate.

    Hay 2 cabinas diferentes básicas, una para las naves civiles y otra para las naves de combate, aunque el juego permite una cabina por nave (Modders, yo os invoco!)

    Las ciudades y estaciones también llaman la atención ya que se construyen por módulos y pueden tener un aspecto inmensamente grande, las ciudades y módulos son defendidos automáticamente mediante torretas de defensa y creedme, yo he visto una estación con más de 30 torretas en Orion Sigma (Cuando era Beta el server) y no había Vonari (Ni nave de la Alianza) que se acercase :D

    Las estaciones de construcción han sido eliminadas y sustituidas por el laboratorio de ingeniería, donde podremos construir cualquier objeto del mercado (Y otros muchos que no están a la venta) mediante datadisks (Blue Prints) con las instrucciones necesarias para ello. Además ahora el porcentaje de recursos así como su valor va en base a los módulos instalados. (En Mercenary esto eran Estaciones de Procesado de Minería, Estación Científica, etc)

    Y este es otro de los puntos importantes, la exploración gana fuerza debido a que en el universo hay varios centenares de Data Disks escondidos, en planetas, en naves naufragadas, etc, donde podremos construir CUALQUIER cosa, muchas de ellas cosas que no están ni estarán NUNCA en el mercado habitual.

    Desaparecen las subfacciones para quedarnos con sólo 2 facciones que controlan el universo, Alianza y Federación, los terrirtorios hay que conquistarlos derribando las estaciones de una facción y construyendo otras, pero como eso es una ardua tarea para un piloto principiante el juego nos ayuda.

    En Mercenary el universo se movía alrededor nuestro, nuestras acciones determinaban todo, el mercado, el % de control de nuestra facción, etc. En Legacy esto (Opcionalmente) se puede hacer dinámico, puedes salir un día del juego con un sistemaal 60% controlado por la federación y entrar luego y tener un 90%... o un 30% ya que el juego genera aleatoriamente combates simulados y esto da vidilla al juego porque ya no depende sólo de ti, ni los valores del mercado, ni el porcentaje de control ni el nivel tecnológico/económico de cada sistema.

    Más cambios... La consola de navegación, ahora muestra unos 30 sectores a su máximo zoom (8 en Mercenary) y nos permite además ver otros sistemas, además, podemos fijar puntos de salto seguros a los diferentes elementos del sector (Planetas, Estaciones, Asteroides, etc) con un sólo clic. Además, al igual que en Arvoch Alliance podemos ver el mapa del sector o del sistema en 3D (¡Sugerido por mi!)

    Las llamadas de emergencia ahora salen en la lista de contratos (¡Esto también lo sugerí yo!) con lo que es más fácil aceptar y gestionar las llamadas de emergencia, que por cierto, entre las novedades hay una de eliminar X asteroides antes de que lleguen al planeta y colisionen y creedme, cuando entran en la atmósfera y tienes que seguir su estela en llamas... da miedito (De hecho la primera vez que lo vi se estrellaron contra la ciudad (rompiéndo los módulos!!)    … Full Review »
