  • Summary: Evertried is an isometric, tactical rogue-lite where the player ascends a mysterious tower in the afterlife using their wits, strategy and positioning in turn-based combat. Make clever use of attacks, movement, skills and hazards to clear floors of enemies and advance higher toward your destiny.

    With more time in the oven or expansions, I can see Evertried becoming a much more exciting adventure. As it stands right now, it’s too simple to be called a serious game, but it’s also too cutthroat and challenging to be called a casual game. The systems aren’t clear, information seems almost hidden, and the game just isn’t deep enough to make me want to jump back in after a loss, which is absolutely essential in any roguelike or roguelite. I found some enjoyment in Evertried, and I want to love this game for all its charm and originality, but I quickly tired of it.

    The concept behind Evertried is compelling as an idea. You get to strategically fight your way to determine what becomes of your afterlife. In addition, you can maybe learn about what happened to you in your past life as a warrior. But the gameplay and execution leave much to be desired. The art style and music shine, but the combat mechanics are limited in nature, and there aren’t many reasons for me to click “Ascend” and replay the game.

  1. Whatever the reason, Evertried forgoes a lot of modern conveniences common to the roguelike. If you are in search of an austere tile-hopper, you might find strength in its arrow-key puritanism. But as one indoctrinated by Into The Breach and the recently released Pawnbarian (a similar tile-by-tile roguelike with both clarity and capybaras), the uniformity of Evertried comes across as a lack of polish, a jigsaw that could be pleasing to the eye if only it didn't have so many missing pieces.
