On our conscience is the fate of an individual state taken. We are free to control it as we please: build up the royal army and fight with its neighbors on the mainland, create a whole state of merchants and subdue trade to ourselves, find the New World and appropriate its wealth ... but what's that? Game tools quite accurately simulate domestic and foreign policy. Take the indicator of stability: the higher it is, the greater the tax collected, the risk of rebellion is less - the light is brighter and it is easier to breathe. Will leave in a minus - welcome to tartarary! And there is inflation and likes to become hyperinflation, if you are lucky at gold deposits. And also - all kinds of indicators of the economy, trade, fatigue from war, contentment and discontent, military and naval traditions - and everything should be looked at, without forgetting the plan in case of force majeure. Well, the war, of course. Here, war is a special case of diplomacy, not a daily bread, like anywhere in Total War, and not a thorn in the ass like in Civilization V. War can only be useful for its initiator and for those who were ready for it and found her application. Somehow - shake out the money from old enemies to pay off their debts on credit, or force the defeated to release a few small nations who are sure to want to be friends with us. The war is not welcome here. The seizure of provinces or even complete annexation is possible only if the enemy has a small area, and you have a monstrous preponderance in the armed forces. At the same time, the aggressiveness index of the initiating power will soar to the ceiling, which will be bad for the opinion of the surrounding countries. Believe me, they will remember your aggressive appetites and will do anything to prevent new victims. Therefore, it is necessary to fight war carefully, looking at the public and spending. Expand

The main draw of EU4 is that it's an open sandbox play as any of the major nations like England or France, or play as a small country in SE Asia or an American Indian tribe. There are no real win conditions, and you can play however you like. Some countries have historical events that happen to them, or events that only happen under certain conditions, so no two games are ever alike. The only issues I have are that combat is still very spreadsheet oriented (you have more you win, generally), and that colonization is blazingly fast for certain countries, which can easily lead to power imbalance. Still, EU4 is a great game in the genre and if you're looking to lose a hundred hours of your life colonizing, converting heresy and fighting wars, this is the game to do it. Expand

Some people will complain about how there is less to control in this game compared to the past games of the series, however I feel like this is a positive thing because the things that I actually can control make a difference to the country I'm controlling. Before it really felt like I was a bystander and could only do so much, but now I feel like you have much more freedom as a player. Also a lot of the particularly annoying things (for example: pirates) are gone or much reduced in EU IV. The only negative in this game is how long it takes to load up when you start it. Expand

OK, you don't get the fancy battle scenes like the TW series but, you know something, I don't miss them. In fact, when I go back to TW, I miss the better strategy map and depth from EUIV than I miss the battles when playing EUIV. Now that basically says it all. Maybe it's an age thing, but you can stick all your fancy 3D graphics as far as I'm concerned - as I'd rather have this level depth and enjoyment any day of the week.

One word of warning, this can be a brutal experience for the uninitiated. Best thing to do is to start small and work your way up to a super power so you can learn the ropes, otherwise you'll just get frustrated in the early days of play. The amount of alliances and enemies you have to deal with when your one of the big guns can be overwhelming at first.

CK2 left a very good impresion in me, I thought PDS was finally getting a hang of things and I decided to support them. And when EU4 came, I played a bit with Burgundy, I was a litlle frustrated and regreted my decision, shelving the game.
But then came all the patchs, game fixes and balances (like trade nerfing). Now EU4 is amazing and I already spent hours and hours and hours in this game, bulding Switzerland into a constitutional republic, an economical world power against France, making my north American kingdom with a norwegian court-in-exile, and many others plays.
I didn't understood the sinergy and connection between Monarchic Points, technology, buildings and everything else at first, but now I see how well planed and structured everything is in this game and I'm enjoying very much. The only bad thing I would say, is that same thing that EU3 also had: is a deterministic game. You can't take Spain and go for a military non-colonial game, you can't take Brandenburg and not focus on forming Germany/Prussia, otherwise the game punishs you and thing lose sense. Also the lack of natives in South America, and how the lack of a La Plata trade node.
Anyway, it's an awesome iteration and I hope that East versus West follows its footsteps.

EUIV will go down as one of the best of its genre. Ive played the EU series, CK II, V II & all the CIVs. This one is in depth, the alliances and diplomacy is extremely vital particular if you are smaller nation whereby the strength of your alliances are as vital as your armies.

Example, as the Papal States, I was able to ride France and a combination of moving alliances w/ Switzerland, Poland, Hungary and smaller alliances, ie. Savoy to unite provinces before turning on Savoy and taking Piedmont with the help of Lorraine to whom for 100 years we were enemies.

Moreover, you can use the diplomacy system to drive wedges in Alliances. Example, I needed to take Venice but Aragaon was allied with both Venice and other Allies and would have backed Venice if I attacked. So I spent a few years goading Aragaon into attacking me, France and my Allies backed up, Venice stayed in a coalition to attack. Viola, I kept my allies, won the war and now have Venice ready to fall once the true ends.

Another key point is that its better to take a minor loss than doggedly hang in, losing cash or manpower. If you are losing the battle, drop out. Take a loss of territory, rebuild a better alliance and retake the land. If a foreign army defeated you and you dont have an army ready to retake the land, conceede the territory otherwise the army will roll up your other properties and will take even more.

Combat has improved in so far as you need to take into account terrain more than in other Paradox titles. Have a stack of 20, think it will crush that stack of 10? Oh **** its dug in on a mountain? Bye bye. Morale low? Bye bye.

Use smaller units to draw opposing enemies trying to crush a smaller army on terrain favourable to you so they take the penalty, then march your larger stack in. A small stack on favourable terrain will hold out, your larger stack arrives and now you have trapped their army.

What i dont like is the armies and battles while important seem very generic. There is no feel. I cant get it a perfect score despite having hrs of fun because combat on a whole can still come down to mass.

Good: Diplomacy, usage of points as opposed to cash to research tech, use of inflation to stop hoarding cash thus forcing investments. Multiple directions to achieve a variety of self chosen goals.

Bad: Combat needs to have an improved feel. Its still bland.

If you like the genre, you'll love the game. If you're new to the genre, save regularly and take the first 100 years as a learning experience. Id give it 10/10 but for the combat needing work.

The game itself is a wonderful exploration of nearly four-hundred years of human history, all of which is malleable to your will. Conquer the world, or simply strive to eke out an existence among the greater powers. Like other Paradox games it's greatest strength is in the game's dynamic flow and story: the only victory conditions are those you set for yourself, which lends the game a near infinite amount of replayability. However, I must also warn you: the game is a complex array of mechanics and ideas and is absolutely not to everyone's speed. But it is quality enough that I would recommend the demo to everyone.

One thing I will say is; this game is not for the faint of heart. Losing is almost always a very real possibility and the AI is better at dragging you back down that it was in previous iterations when you became too power.

It's also a little more new-player friendly than EU3 so far as I can tell, and it is a little easier to manipulate the AI than in just about every other Paradox Title ever (which is a good thing). All in all, if you're a fan of Paradox titles, or Grand Strategy in general, definitely worth checking this game out. There are many hours of enjoyment to be had, even for returning EU3 customers.

The tired (and highly flawed) trading system has been replaced with one that makes a lot more sense and keeps the game from getting out of hand (particularly during the end-game).

Income has been replaced with a single, monthly, number greatly increasing ease of understanding and economic planning. Some features, such as inflation have been dumbed down, which may or may not be of concern, but overall economics just feels better.

Technology sliders and certain diplomatic/administrative actions have been replaced by a three pronged point system, which again, streamlines ease of use, but more importantly, makes actions, like (the ever-popular) large-scale revolts, construction, and war exhaustion manageable and easier to visualize as real world paradigms.

This limited points system spills over into diplomacy, religion, and trade, with diplomats, missionaries, and merchants now a standing number non-replenishable over the months but available to send and call back from missions at will, which particularly with diplomats open more options.

Wars are shorter and more defined, and reinforce speed has been significantly decreased, meaning standing armies are more important. Losing a battle makes your units fall back several territories and prevents the ridiculous "cat-and-mouse" chases of yesteryear.

Overall, for those who are old hands of EU, this is a great new addition to the series, expanding on the best EU has to offer. For those who are new to series, this is the perfect entry to get your feet wet, with tool tips and explanations abound. Although complicated enough to be called a "grand strategy" game, EU4 is the perfect blend of complexity and design, but without the complication inherent in some other titles.

Although the difficulty curve may be very steep for those new to paradox game, EU4 is most certainly the cream of the crop of grand strategy, and you'll find it very hard to go back to games like Civilization after it, thanks to its deep gameplay and replayability. Sadly, I do have to penalize it somewhat for its DLC policy, which makes it ridiculously expensive to get properly started off with,

A bad ruler will make it hard for your country to advance, conduct war and keep stability. It is frustrating fantastic.

Overall I am very happy with it and it feels like a matured EUIII. For those that are new to the series, the learning curve is the fun part. Stick with it a few dozen hours and you will begin to understand the depth and mechanics.

I did give it a 9 because it is still needing some content additions which I'm sure will come in the form of free patches or paid DLC. Some of the countries have a generic feel. With a game this massive, I would think it to be impossible to make every country historically unique, but there is room to grow, hence the 9.

Last note, special thanks to Paradox for publishing this to Linux. As a Linux user for about a decade, Paradox games were the one wish I had for gaming. Their support is amazing and appreciated.

Overall the integration of history has been done extremely well. Events can be significant but at the same time do not make or break most games (Only real big one I can think of is Burgundian Inheritance). Outside of Europe there is less polish (with exceptions to Japan and Ottomans), yet outside of NA you can always find at least one unique player. Combined with mods ( Now easily available through steam workshop) you can get a great experience.

Then there is the experiments you craft yourself, to see the Cherokee dominate North America, the Aztec conquer both Americas. To unite imperial japan and combat through Asia while colonizing the new world. To break away as Naples and unite the great boot of Italy. To turn Novgorod, a trading nation annexed by Muscovy with armies about 2 times larger, into a nation that not only remains but is able to overcome Muscovy to form a new democratic Russia. These are a few of my experience. A very fun way of playing against history.

EU4 has a great level of mechanics. It emphasizes macro decisions, long term planning and paying attention to alliances as the world shifts around you. What makes the system great however I would say comes down to the fact that it is harshly enforced while relatively simply to understand (A few games to figure out) Playing as Austria one quickly learns the folly of ransacking smaller neighbors.

Overall a great game that I've played for 200 hours, and continue to play. All for 40$

It isn't as pretty as other grand strategies around (not naming), but that's not where the strength of EU lies. It doesn't have eye candylike animations, nor effects, it has tens of statistics. Now all these statistics are realistic - you have administrative points, which accumulate if not being used depending mainly of how clever the ruler is. You use these points to increase overall stability of the realm. === it simlulates huge effort which countries had to do to stabilize their realm and they couldn't do it if they focused at the same time on other things like "coring" (or assimilating) new lands into the country.

Different tech groups pace the speed of research, with the western group fastest and nomads at the bottom. Countries will eventually specialize in subgroups for military, exploration and so on according to their needs. You can play any country, and the monarch point system, diplomacy and alliances make small countries playable, coalitions hold aggressive monarchs in check.
Overall it does a great job here. Spain at the fringes of Europe feels different from a continental power or the Ottomans, a western nation poses different tasks than an asian realm.

The game starts slow, with almost no options except diplomacy and military at first. It takes some time until other options unfold. Even losing a war once in a while is usually not the end.
Slowly your reach and power expand, and new challenges and opportulities unfold. Scripted events according to actual history change the map.

Religion plays a big role. With religious ideas and laws, evangelising your whole realm is possible in a short time. (cultural conversion costs monarch points, so you usually leave this be). This feels somewhat unrealistic in an otherwise exceptionally balanced system; on the other hand you need a social tech group that could also improve military, expansion or trade.

The Wealth of Nations expansion added some trade improvements and closed an expansion loophole (integrating vassals was too cheap). The new rival and power projection system is also neat.
I tried and dropped the first eu versions very fast - too complex and lost in detail. eu IV still hast tons of detail and depth, but is actually easily operated.

Despite my generally positive experience there are a few issues with the game, namely Paradox's DLC policy. I currently don't own any of the DLC however, due to the high price and extensive nature of the DLC I don't plan on buying any either. As well as this a decent amount of relatively basic content (e.g. manual improvement of provinces) is locked behind this incredulous pay wall.

Even though this DLC policy is ridiculous I personally believe you don't need the DLC to have an extremely enjoyable time while playing the game. (Especially for a history geek like myself!) A Decade of Grand Strategy Excellence - 9/10

As a dedicated player of Europa Universalis IV for the past 10 years, and having experienced every expansion along the way, I can confidently say that this Paradox title is a true gem in the realm of grand strategy games. With the perfect balance of depth and breadth, as well as historical accuracy and playability, EU4 offers an unparalleled experience for both history enthusiasts and strategy gamers alike.

One of the key elements that sets EU4 apart from other grand strategy games is its focus on both micro and macro gameplay. The game allows players to dive deep into the intricacies of diplomacy, warfare, and economic management, while also offering the opportunity to guide an entire nation through centuries of historical events. This combination of detail and scope creates a captivating experience that has kept me hooked for a decade.

The historical accuracy in EU4 is commendable, as it manages to stay true to real-world events and geopolitical situations while still providing players with the flexibility to forge their own paths. This balance ensures that the game remains engaging and exciting, offering countless possibilities for alternate historical outcomes.

Moreover, the consistent release of expansions and updates has kept EU4 fresh and exciting over the years. The developers at Paradox have shown a commitment to improving and expanding the game, adding new mechanics, regions, and historical events that have only served to deepen the already impressive gameplay experience.

As a passionate fan of both history and strategy gaming, I have found Europa Universalis IV to be the ideal blend of these two worlds. With its near-perfect combination of depth, breadth, historicity, and playability, EU4 truly stands out as an exceptional grand strategy game. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a rich and engaging experience that will challenge their strategic skills and satisfy their historical curiosity.

I played this game over 800 hours by now and i have to say im not bored by now, if you are searching a game that will last you you are perfectly right with this one, but the dlc politics is like a bad joke, so expansive for basicly no content or content that should be in the main game by default.
But even with that i cant rate this game bad because its that good.
    Probably the go to for

Positives: quite a lot of depth, great mods (community mods are the reason I still play the game to this day), learning curve is not too steep, which is great for someone new to grand strategy.

Negatives: great powers would steamroll across the map, so if you want to roleplay history, it might get a little bit tricky.

After years of development and many DLCs, this game is now an impressive work that could simulate the history and country managing.

There are so many contents to the game that the learning curve would be steep, the game also had late game problems like other Paradox games. However apart from these flaws, the whole system is great and worth spend time playing.

This is the video game I've spent the most time on. You need a lot of time to learn and master it, but once you do, it's so addictive, especially if you're a history nerd. Some DLCs have very irrelevant stuff and are not worth the price, while some other DLCs include some mechanics that are pretty essential and should've been in the base game. Also the number of main DLCs is too big, there are 15 of them in July 2020, I think. That's really too many. Expand

Excellent strategy that I keep returning to. My biggest complaint is Paradox business model that revolves around introducing small patch-like changes, calling them expansions. Many changes are basically things that should be from the day 1, or fixes to overall balance they ruined with previous "expansions". Europa Universalis IV is the pinnacle of Paradox Interactive games, with plenty of content in the areas of diplomacy, trade, warfare, estates, etc.
    Pros:
    - Rich in content - Freedom of the player to choose his personal objective - Mechanics unique to certain realities such as the Holy Roman Empire or the Ming Empire - The Extended Timeline Mod, which allows you to play from the year

CK2, тільки замість династій повноцінні країни. Ідеальна алтернатива, коли набридають Крусейдери. Парадокс добре постарався не повторювати все, тому Європа грається зовсім по іншому, ніж CK.

If you are able to overlook the terrible wallet draining marketing practices (even in less legal ways if youre into that) this is the best paradox grand strategy experience, the most complete, with the most content, and simply the most fun for the most time.

If you want a more structured experience there are missions trees for some of the nations that gives you the opportunity to have a historical game if you want. The game also revives regular updates even to this day, however to actually experience the updates in their entirety you have to pay. This is the only negative to the game and it's that the DLCs are really expensive, though it's not fair to expect all the content for free since they are putting time and resources into developing the DLCs it is fair to expect some of the really basic features for free instead of forcing you to pay. Despite that drawback EU4 is still a good game that is worth purchasing. Expand

Overall I like the game very much and would recommend it to everyone who is willing to spend some time to learn the game. What helped me a lot was a tutorial from quill18: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGH-Sc1EfdI

Paradox's most polish game up to date! There are still minor and major topographical, historical and A.I. issues, but they made their game highly enjoyable, and polished this time. I can recommend it to every strategy fan. It can be difficult, but also a lot of fun!

Once players overcome the initial learning curve, Europa Universalis IV will prove a memorable strategy experience that provides as much fun stories as it does sheer tactical complexity.

Somehow retains the series' trademark braininess and complexity while being clearer, simpler and far more fun. [Nov 2013, p.92]

The ultimate strategic simulator of an early modern history state with wide options for both success and failure. Do you want to unite Britain under Scotland, thwart the Spanish Reconquista or maintain the Inca empire? Suit yourself. [Issue#234]
