I found Emily Wants to Play to be really enjoyable, and it’s a shame that there wasn’t more to play with (pun intended).

It's really difficult to review. I can't comment on how good the gameplay is really, or the controls, as it's basically just a first person walkalong with mouse interaction - it's more of a super-intense personal experience than a top drawer gaming one. It takes the gameplay mechanic of a jump scare and executes it superbly well with fantastic variation, by utilising the building of tension and an atmosphere setting to its' fullest advantage.

It is YouTube Let's Play bait, obviously (and I wanted to hate this game for that reason going in, as I rolled my eyes at yet another jump scare horror game on Steam). But the difference here is that when you play it yourself, the unbelievable feeling of dread and actual horror is actually there and the scares aren't forced. You'll genuinely crap yourself playing this!

It doesn't overstay its' welcome in terms of length, the atmosphere and audio cues are sublime and the price point is absolutely perfect. It's a perfect example of what an indie dev can do to really add something to gaming in 2015.

I'd go as far as saying this is one of the best pure horror games ever made, so I've got to score it highly. Yes, it isn't packed with content and it isn't AAA quality, but you have to consider what the game is aiming to do, and in this case everything it has aimed to do it does in spades.

Along with Undertale, this is the biggest gaming surprise release of 2015, and I really, really didn't expect to be saying that about a first person horror game on Steam!!!

Each time you play something different will happen so you can never predict the frights. This is a powerful concept that really works and I'd love to see this used more in survival horror games. It's the first game I've played where I'm reticent to even play again, due to the intense effect it had on my nervous system. Full Review »
