Breath taking space simulator, especially with Oculus Rift! Runs very smooth and the interface is revolutionary. Those negative reviews you see are people who are angry because they invested in Star Citizen... I just fail to see how giving bogus reviews of Elite could make them feel any better.. hmm.. people are interesting.

Excellent Game. Very playable, I don't see any of the problems that people talk about. I've played it for a few months and have watched it grow. Unfinished, yes, but over time more will come on line. Is this a game you can pick up in 5 mins, nope not a chance but it is for me a truly great game.

Elite: Dangerous is a very fun game, the size and feel of the universe is spectacular. The learning curve is not to bad, it might feel overwhelming at first but its very easy to pick up. If your not very good with a keyboard and mouse id say get the xbox version, but iv only played PC and couldn't ever play with a game pad.

Gameplay is rock solid. The audio is amazing. There combined in such a way that makes the game immersive and fun. Your ship does what you want it to. You can do whatever you want to. Be a pirate? Hunt pirates for there bounty and ill gotten goods? Become a trader? Mine some precious metals and cash in? Can't wait to see what they release for this beast next.

I can not even say enough good things about this game! There is so much content and things to do in an entire Galaxy. The developer continues to expand the universe with more content with each new release level. I started playing in Beta all the way through Gamma and full release. I will say this though the game is not without faults. I have has some issues during the release version related to audio. Given how quickly the developer patches the game I would not be surprised if they are fixed rather quickly.

The game itself is on an epic scale, with over 100 billion star systems, containing over 400 billion stars to play in. You play a commander of a small craft, able to move smoothly between trading, bounty hunting, exploring, even piracy if you wish.

Watching the game develop over the past several months, it's been noticeable how dedicated and competent Frontier have been in implementing new features and debugging existing systems. There's been missteps along the way, as with any project, but what has come out of the process is a solid game with a lot to offer, and a huge huge potential for expansion.

If you are a fan of flight simulators and space games, don't miss this amazing update of the ultimate space trading game. Elite.

I don't even care if there is repetition of tasks, especially down the line. It just runs so well, so damn smooth and the sound effects are out of this world. Even just starting up my ship is a euphoric experience for me in Elite Dangerous and I never get tired of it. The ships are overly complicated in Star Citizen and the set up is intimidating. Playing it feels more like hard work. That's not to say I don't enjoy Star Citizen, it's the second best space sim in my opinion and there are aspects of it that are better than elite dangerous ( I love my persona and character development in Star Citizen as well as walking around my ship). What I usually do is play Star Citizen for a few hours and when exhaustion sets in and I get tired of the bugs I switch to Elite Dangerous which feels more polished and way more chilled to play. But we really are spoiled brats when we get to play such amazing games and we fight over which is better. Play your favourite or play both and just be grateful you are born in a time that we can have such amazing experiences in video games. When I was a kid I used to fantasize about exploring space and having amazing adventures there. 10 year old me would have pissed his pants with excitement if he could have played either of these two games back then. If you're looking for Freespace, Wing Commander, or one of those games, that is not what Elite is, nor what it was back in 1984. What you get with Elite: Dangerous is basically a modern adaptation of the 1984 Elite, with some new tweaks. From here, the development team has been expanding their reach, looking to push Elite beyond what the game originally was, into new things.

As the game stands now, you are dropped into a 1-1 scale replica of the galaxy, with a ship and some credits. You can find your way however you want, bounty hunting, trading, or exploring.

Many have complained the game has a lack of content, and in the traditional sense, this is absolutely true. This game doesn't give you a linear storyline to progress through, or something structured to experience. This is more akin to Star Wars Galaxies. You create your character, and you start off outside of a starport with a pistol, a dagger, a pair of pants, and a melon. Good luck. It is up to you to find your own way, to decide what you want to do. If you are someone that enjoys that, you will find content in this game.

The political aspects of the game merge beautifully with the economic. So there are 3 major factions: The Alliance, the Federation, and the Empire. Each have different laws which govern aspects of space stations. Tobacco is a resource that may be illegal in the Federation, but not in the Empire. So lets say you're doing a Tobacco trade run on Empire border space. Other players can go to the Empire system, start to kill traders, police officers, and do things to build civil unrest. This helps to trigger a civil war in the system, so it ceases to be Empire, and switches to Federation post-Civil War. When this happens, now thew law states you can't sell tobacco there, so the trade route has been changed.

This is a game about emergent gameplay. Players can impact the way that different powers grow in the colonized area of space. You are capable of flipping systems, of fighting in civil wars.

Now, that's what the game is. What the game is not:

Eve. You are not a corporation leader. You are not building a business. You are not a crafter of items which you then sell on the market. You are a freelancer. You have your ship, and all of the Milky Way. That's what you are. You are free to trade other people's resources, trade between what systems you want, but you are not a creator of those resources.

Immediate satisfaction. This game is not one that gives you immediate satisfaction. You start out in a crummy ship, and the entire point is to just build yourself up over time. Do missions, earn money, buy better ship parts, do more things, get more money, and so on. Unless you are bounty hunting or fighting in combat, you will not need to pay 100% attention. This is a game that goes very well with audiobooks, netflix, podcasts, things like that. It is easy to fly through space while watching TV, listening to podcasts, or catching up on some books. Exploration and Trading as professions are just active enough to help get by some of the boredom that can set in when you're *just* watching netflix, listening to a podcast, while doing nothing else. It is one thing to sit and listen to a book, it is another to fly through space while listening to an audiobook. However, again, when bounty hunting, or fighting in wars, however, you will want to have significantly more attention paid to the game.

Star Citizen. This game is not Star Citizen. Star Citizen is far more active, has significantly less scale, and is working on releasing with a FPS segment. Elite is a Sandbox. Star Citizen is going after something different than that. Star Citizen looks like it will be a great game, just as Elite: Dangerous is. The point is, these games are doing two very different things.

Ultimately, watch some videos, watch people play it, and see if it looks fun to you. I have clocked over 600 hours in this game at this point, and for the price, that is incredibly good. Further, they are releasing more content for free, and with no sub, you do not need to fear leaving the game for a bit, letting some patches go through, and then returning. People have asked me how they monetize the game: Skins, in the future they will have expansion packs (similar to Eve, WoW, most other MMOs). For the time being, the game has sold better than they expected, and were able to report to their investors that they made more than expected, in the highest tier. They are set for development funds for the time being. The game is off to a great start.

    Enjoy!

Elite: Dangerous is not for everyone. It requires the player to invest time and effort to achieve even a basic level of game play. Then it gets even more challenging.

If you lack patience or imagination, if you want instant gratification, or if you expect to be a game god dominating everything and everyone around you within an hour, do not buy this game. You'll be disappointed.

Elite: Dangerous is HARD; at least until you understand the many facets of game play. There are hundreds of factors that can kill you and there is a steep learning curve to the game. It does not hold your hand and explain every little thing as you go. Just taking off and landing safely are a challenge. The game is unforgiving. Mistakes, even small ones, can kill you. The game is real time. There is no pause, there is no save, the game goes on no matter what you do.

Elite: Dangerous is immersive. The visuals and sound are like a hot bath you plunge into. Weapon and engine noises differ with each ship model. You can modify your ships with more powerful engines, weapons, armor, shields and equipment. I play the game in 1080 resolution with 7.1 surround sound headphones and it is awe inspiring at times.

The Elite: Dangerous galaxy is the same galaxy we live in today. There are 400 billion stars and 99.99% can be explored or visited. It is a monstrously huge game map and only 0.02% of the galaxy has been explored so far.

The comments that this is a simple space trucker sim are from people who rage quit when they were not perfect in the first half hour. As I said, it takes time and mental discipline to get the flight mechanics under control. Once you "get it" you can pivot in space and fire behind you without losing forward momentum. Or if you prefer, Newtonian flight mechanics.

In a traditional flight game, you set pitch, yaw, roll and throttle and away you go. Elite: Dangerous has several dozen settings you can set just for piloting your craft. Many of them are OFF by default, but as you grow more confident and daring you'll find those settings add a depth and sophistication all their own. You can use a mouse and keyboard, but a joystick or HOTAS rig will see you in good stead.

You can choose to be a pirate, bounty hunter, miner, explorer, trader or switch from one career to the other constantly. Many players have several ships they can switch too.

When you start you will have the option to do tutorial missions. DO THEM. Make your mistakes there and learn how to fly and fight. You may spend several hours in the sims adjusting controls, trying different throttle settings and getting comfortable. This is time well spent. Many give up on the tutorials because they are hard and go into the game unprepared. Skip the tutorials and I guarantee you'll regret it.

Elite: Dangerous is a game of power management. When in game you only have a certain amount of power in your ship. You need to manage your shields, weapons and engine power. In game this is the SYS - ENG - WEP. Adding power to one takes it away from the others. Learn the implications of this in a safe environment. Run out of fuel and you will die.

Heat is your enemy and allows you to be tracked. Weapons fire, silent running and flying too close to some planetary bodies make your ship hot. You need to know what to do because extreme heat will damage your ship hull and internal components. If your hull falls to 0% you will die.

There are three game modes. All of them require a constant Internet connection be active:

Open - This is where many people start. You can interact with thousands of other Commanders (CMDR's). It is a dangerous place with CMDR's who will shoot you up just to watch you burn. Open is for people who know what they are doing and can either defend themselves of know how to run. Both PC's and NPC's can be found in Open. Both will try to kill you or take your cargo. PC CMDR's can be identified by hollow rectangles. Green are friends, yellow are unknown and red are hostile. Remember, just because someone is green does not mean you are safe.

Solo - This is the same as Open, but you are the only PC. You can learn game mechanics here without the danger of players shooting you up. Be warned, NPC's will still interdict and try to engage you.

Private Groups - This is for several players to either game privately or with like minded players. Not ready for Open? Then join a private group where you can learn the game in (relative) safety. Form your own group for you and your friends, or join an established one.

The largest private group is Mobius with over 8,100 players (as I write this) and more joining daily.

As for the "shallow" reviews, Elite Dangerous is as deep as your own imagination. The game is a backdrop and YOU make things happen. Imaginative players will love this game.

I'll see you in the big black CMDR.

Combat, Exploration, Mining & Trading are the main pillars of game play and are immediately accessible and have virtually no barrier for entry (unlike other online games where you've got to amass a small fortune of currency or spend hours leveling up before you can access certain content)

The learning curve can seem steep at first, and the game doesn't get easier as you go (you just get better at it)
It's an extremely gratifying experience flying into a star port and docking your ship with ease, while watching beginner pilots spend 15 minutes trying to just point their ship in the direction.
Don't listen to people who complain that docking is too hard, it's about as complex as parking a car (practice makes perfect, once you develop your spacial awareness and get a feel for your ship, you'll be boosting into port without trouble.)
and definitely don't waste your money on a docking computer, just learn to fly your ship properly. (would you ask someone else to park your car at the mall?)

Combat is intense and rewarding, with millions of different weapon configurations for the available ships even the beginner ship has a chance against some of the bigger "end game" ships, so it pays to not get complacent when you start getting bigger ships because at the end of the day, the better pilot will ALWAYS win.

Exploration is a lot of fun as a primary profession or as a way to supplement fuel costs on long trips.

Despite criticism, Mining is actually reasonably lucrative for a patient player, as there are no real overheads (just get a cheap mining laser and go!) but it does take a lot of patience to chip away enough asteroids to make some real money. It's an interesting diversion however and I'm interested to see how it develops.

Trading is probably the easiest way to both make and lose a lot of money in Elite, and once you start to get serious in trading you'll find that your cargo can be often worth more than your ship! which can make for some very TENSE situations, even docking a Lakon Type 9 can become a big deal at a crowded station as all it takes is one cowboy to clip you on his way out of star-port to ruin your day/week/month.

At this point in time Elite is an incredible, vast, living, breathing universe waiting to be explored and conquered and I'm truly excited to see where it goes next.

If you're at all interested in space sims you NEED to give it a try.

Most people will probably start by Trading; this is the safest way to make money which will allow you to upgrade your ship to the very highest specs in order that you might have a chance should you get involved in combat with another ship.
This however in my opinion is putting off the real game, forget flight simulators this is space and the manoeuvrability of your space ship is simply beyond comprehension of most players. Try to think out of the box, your ship is capable of the most fantastic combat manoeuvres and what you really need to be doing as soon as your able is practicing these breath-taking manoeuvres so that you are able to become Elite & feared by all who encounter you.
A lot of people are upset about losing single player off line but who the hell in this day & age wants to play a game on their own?
Get out there practice, and see if you can take on a real Space Pilot, I guarantee that you will feel an overwhelming adrenalin kick like no other when you’re in combat with another human player.

As per 2.07 (last pre-launch update) it feels good, looks better and plays great. The foundation is very solid and it can get only better with the promised development after release that will continue to expand the base of the game while also working on major expansions like planetary landings and first person.

The latest fixes during Beta and Gamma have done an excellent job to improve the stability and overall balance of the game. Trading is finally fixed and logical again, combat feels great. No issues with the netcode (for me) and overall an excellent experience. Mind though - this game isn't easy and doesn't hold your hand - your actions have consequences and there is no magic immunity nets. Live fast, die hard!

In addition, Frontier Developments have shown to be a great company, constantly hearing and answering their customers and changing the game to suit people's requests. Many times features or fixes requested in the forums have "magically" appeared in the game showing that the guys at Frontier actually do really care about our opinions - this also corroborated by some of the senior Frontier staff frequently posting and engaging in debates and clarifications with the players.

Graphics is beautiful and the sounds are on hollywood level in quality. Hearing the ships engines roar and whine is awesome. This is THE best first person spaceship sim and it will get better with the coming expansions "Wings" (more coop features) and planet landing. So happy that the release is today, and i cant wait to see the coming expanions packed with features. If you love space combat, trading, smuggling, piracy and to be able to affect the universe with your and your friends actions, you gotta buy this right now.

I came into ED during beta 2 and i have seen how Frontier (the developers) add features the community wanted so they are listening to good ideas which is great. Simply cant wait to see how they expand on the universe in the coming year. See you out there commanders!

PS. People saying the game is bugged have only played the beta version (called gamma), and so they have no idea how the release version is regarding any bugs. So take it with a grain of salt. Also, any bugs are obviously going to be squashed. Nothing to fear and the core game works great. Im having a blast with my friends in the pre-release "beta" version.

In conclusion the really important features and mechanics are already there and are very good, but there is a long road to walk before this game feels complete, so it might not be a game for everyone.

These scores are after all used by people to compare against other games and since I personally no longer are even interested in other titles this then follows logically. ;)

In terms of features/content there is still plenty to get done, but with the potential scope of the game that will always be the case. There will always be more to add and improve and the devs have always said that this is a long term project for them. What we have now is only the beginning.

I don't really agree with people claiming that it is lacking in terms of content though. I've played it all through development and still keep on finding new things in game that I haven't seen before. There is plenty to do in the game, but it DOES require the player to actively find these things. Improvements in how to present these things to the players in different ways would go a long way of making people realize how much is actually in there.

Improvements to co-op is also sorely needed at the moment and this is probably my biggest gripe at the moment, but this is also the next major thing the devs will get into the game early next year. It's NOT impossible to play with friends, but it isn't optimal either at the moment.

On the whole it is fantastic though with so much more planned down the road. When seamless planetary landings are implemented together with first person gameplay in ships/stations and down on planets I will never log off again!

    So go get it! :)

some might say they tried it all but I can honestly say that during the beta and the gamma the game just kept improving, I highly doubt I would in my lifetime be able to try everything in this game.
The fighting system is awesome, the trading system seems to be working fine and the mining is quite nice compared to that it's supposed to be a grind anyway.
Getting money is what this is all about to level and that is what makes the lvl system work, no need to spend time on skills or other kind of distracting features. only need to work on my own personal abilities and get the feel for the individual ships.

So the initial release of a game I've played for over 120 hours during the Alpha and Beta stages (despite promising myself I'd not play too much to avoid burning out) is finally released. I say "initial release", because this is not the end, it's merely then end of the beginning, with Frontier planning on updating and adding new features for years to come.

What 1.0 of Elite: Dangerous gives you is exactly what was promised in the initial Kickstarter. A modern re-imagining of the original Elite game from 1984, but it's also so much more than that and the potential for the future is staggering.

Combat in the game is a wonderfully visceral, strategic affair which requires you to eke out the best performance from your ship's weapons and systems to overcome your foe. This is no simplistic point and shoot affair.

Graphically the game is stunning, and the pure, unadulterated beauty of space in Elite: Dangerous will frequently stop you in your tracks whilse playing. Seeing starlight slipping over the floor of the docking hanger as the station rotates will make your jaw drop. Sunrises seen from the viewpoint of an ice asteroid belt will bring a tear to your eye. And this is before you add in the extra dimension (guffaw) of the Oculus Rift.

On the Sound front the Frontier guys have really hit it out of the park. From the roar of the engine boost, the groans of a ships hull under stress when pulling high G manoeuvres, to the thump of impacts and the ambient noised in stations and outposts, the sound design in the game immerses you in the game like no other I've played. It would be criminal if they didn't win awards for the sound design in this game.

Being a true sandbox, deciding what you want to be in the galaxy is the first step in a long journey (a first step that some people seem to stumble on as they seem to prefer being told what to do in games). Bounty Hunter, Trader, Pirate, Miner, Hired Gun, Smuggler, Explorer, it's up to you. And whatever you choose, you can always switch roles whenever the mood takes you as you're not locked into an artifical skill tree or any nonsense like that.

The one potential downside to the game (for some people at least) is that it will not hold your hand. When you first start playing expect to fail a few times! Expect to crash when trying to dock for the first time! Expect to actually have to practice flying your ship before you can fight effectively! Expect to have to put some of that gray matter to use when learning how to trade effectively!

There is no instant win here, and the game is so much better for it.

In an age where seemingly every game has an enforced 2 hour tutorial before you can even start to play properly, and where every game has been dumbed down to lowest common denominator levels, this is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Elite: Dangerous to anybody who loves space, space games in general, and who has always secretly wanted to be Han Solo.

THE most beautiful space game ever developed with the best sound engineering I've ever heard, period.

An absolute must-buy if you have a Rift, since it's considered the flagship of VR immersion. As for the gameplay, quite a few features are yet to come but there's plenty to do as it is. It's a sandbox game so if you expect the game to hold your hand, you will be disappointed.

The beauty of the known galaxy. You can look up at the stars from Earth orbit, know each and every constellation you can see from the surface, and then fly to them. Then return home and cash in the exploration data. It is the much beloved sandbox of thirty and twenty years' memory, updated for the new millennium and just as fun as ever. Welcome back!

    1. Elite Dangerous follows the promise of original Elite and the subsequent games Frontier and First Encounters: be a pilot in a large volume of space, get involved in trading, bounty hunts, pirating, mining, smuggling etc.

    2. Of all the similar games currently available, it does all the ones above the best.

    3. Graphics, sounds, art is extremely well done.

    4. The universe is quite realistic. The whole Milky Way galaxy is pseudo-realistically modeled.

    5. The community as well as the development team is very helpful and responsive. I've been playing the game for two weeks as a backer. During the course of last few week the dev team has been continuously updating the game, addressing issues even on Sundays and Saturdays. I have no idea what all the other people who gave low score here in Metacritic on the premise of dismal support are really talking about.

    6. However the game is currently not %100 done. There are many upcoming features such as better multiplayer support, planet landings, more ships etc. The track record of developers has been very good and majority of people in the community have confidence in game's future.

Gameplay-wise, the flight mechanics are excellent. Making space combat fun is very challenging in space games since it's empty, but FD managed to nail it. They achieved a good balance between realism and fun.

The other gameplay mechanics are extremely fun and have good depth. Some aspects are still barebones, but the potential is there and with time they will certainly mature to the level of the flight mechanics, outfitting, and combat.

Overall, a great game that will get even better as more content is released.

You can choose your role - be a pirate, trader, bounty hunter or miner, you can cause real change in a living, breathing universe and, best of all, you can relive your childhood as it was meant to be.

The economy is not wholly player-driven, but it is definitely influenced strongly by player actions.

Multi-player support is somewhat rudimentary at present, but that is set to change very soon. You can already team up with other like-minded agitators by taking on individual jobs to help destabilise governments, trigger wars, and change the fate of entire planets, which is quite cool.

Most of the time in this galaxy, however, you are the flea on the dog's back, hopping about, and hoping not to get scratched. If your inner Han Solo/Mal Reynolds longs to set out in the cold, uncaring void and "blaze your own trail" (as the blurb goes) - then this game is probably for you.

Given the average level of intelligence on display in some of the negative user reviews thus far, and the agenda that seems to pop up with tedious regularity (i.e. "no offline mode means I can't get a free copy so I'll rage against it's continued existence"), those who read these reviews can probably make their own minds up about who is the target audience and who isn't.

This game is about humanity in the stars. Covering around 100,000 populated star systems of our galaxy of 400 billion star systems. Covering around 100,000 populated star systems of our galaxy of 400 billion star systems. We have split into three major factions, the Federation, the Imperials and the Alliance. Whilst none are at war, there are constant skirmishes and internal struggles going on, and no one knows what will end up happening because the outcome is decided by us.

This game is quite literally what you make of it. It will not hold your hand, the mechanics take a bit of thought, it is not made for a modern day gamer. It is based on the original elite, so if you never played that be prepared for some things that will strike you as odd to begin with.

You can do what ever you want in this game, but be warned, there will be consequences. One of the factions might start hating you, effectively cutting off that section of space to you. Players might notice you have a high bounty on your head and coming for you, alternatively you can try to find such players.

It's the fact that this game is so open ended that it is going to cause some critic amongst players who are used to having everything pointed out to them. It is also in a constant state of flux, events in systems come and go, trade routes come and go.

When I look at most modern day releases I look at the features they have and realise, elite has just the same amount as those, but with a lot more going under the hood that is hidden. People will claim the features in this game are basic. Some of the newest features are, but all of them are solid. Yes there are a few bugs here and there, but they have been patched out on an almost daily bases. We are not talking problems like Unity or AW here, or even the static content of destiny . Expect the current features to be improved and iterated upon now that the foundations are set.

Current feature set as of writing:
    Ship to ship combat
    Trading
    Mining
    Exploration
Dynamic galaxy based on player influence
    Owning multiple ships
upgrading ships to suit your purpose
Solo mode (no player interaction with other players)
Open play (full on pvp possible)

    expected features to come:
Iteration on all of the above.
Flight Wings - grouping up with friends for specific group missions and such.
Thargoids - an alien race that little is known about, other than the fact they live in witchspace(hyperspace).
    Seamless Plantery Landings.
First Person - walking around your ship, stations, planets.
    Executive control of capital ships.
Big Game Hunting (so we have something extra to do on those planets).

The game is in a good spot right now, if you have some patience to learn the mechanics, and find the open ended aspect intriguing this is a game for you. If you don't, or you want your hand held, just avoid it, it is no arcade shooter.

If you like movies with grand Space Opera graphics, you'll love Elite:Dangerous. The game is unquestionably a tour-de-force created by a development team with an obvious passion for the scope available in simulating the entire Galaxy.

The context is you're a space Commander, starting out in a modern spaceship of limited performance, travelling between stations in star systems with a variety of ways to make money and trade your way up through a series of more powerful, better equipped, larger vessels.

One of the strengths of the game is that, given the basic mechanics (you have a ship with a certain cargo capacity and weapons loadout), there are a variety of play styles that allow you to be successful. You can enter a station, buy cargo at a price that looks cheap, transport it to another station that buys it at a higher price, and pocket the profits. What you spend the money on is up to you, but if you like that playing style you can use it to buy bigger, fancier transport, and accumulate weapons that would make any attack on your business an unwise proposition.

Or you can forget the cargo hauling and just go straight for the career path of being the biggest badass killer fighter pilot in the Galaxy. You'll be rewarded with bounties for killing 'wanted' players (predominantly NPC's) and accumulate that money to trick out your ship to be even more Dangerous.

Trading and combat are probably the most popular playing styles, but if interested you can try and make money by 'mining' (you collect the raw materials yourself from space/asteroids and sell it in suitable stations) or 'smuggling' (have a penchant for 'illegal' goods and use various stealth methods to sneak into suitable stations to sell it, avoiding nosy Fed cops as you do so).

Although untimately simple to play, E:D is a large, complex simulation and through the alpha/beta/gamma pre-production the developers have iteratively tuned the model to support an effective balance between profitable trading versus combat. I think it's fair to say the various playing styles coexist reasonably well, i.e. if you're a trader you can expect to get on with your business without too much interference, and combateers can enjoy a good scrap without feeling like every engagement is suicidal. There are a *lot* of NPC's (ships flown by the game AI) so combat pilots have plenty to shoot at, and the designation of large areas of the Galaxy as e.g. 'Federation' or 'Alliance' space means that bad behaviour in that space, such as killing pilots that are not 'wanted' status carries an unattractive penalty.

On the down side, Elite:Dangerous is a lot to take in for the first few minutes you play the game. Like WTF do all these graphics on my spaceship dashboard mean? How the hell am I supposed to fly this spaceship through that entry aperture in the space station? What am I supposed to do once I'm in there? You will find your spaceship shredded to pieces by the station defence lasers when you try and 'dock' without having requested permission first. But, when you start out there really is no downside to having your spaceship blown up, you respawn with a new one, and there are 10 simple tutorial mini-tasks that get you up-and-running and have a good start to your career. After that the Galaxy is yours for the taking.

So the game's not perfect, but I graded it a ten because after hours in the E:D universe it becomes increasingly clear just how much visionary brilliance has gone into the crafting of the game. It's not just another FPS. And the Space Opera graphics are awesome.

This review was written after playing the pre-release versions of the game, up to and including the production 1.0.0.0 version of the game released today.

(I actually heard this!)

In some ways, I'd compare this to a 'Simcity in space', only you're not building a city, you're building your own personal empire.

You have to have patience and a little luck to make things go your way in the game. Persistence pays off... Most of the time - but that's the key isn't it? Games aren't fun without risk, and there's a LOT of risk here.

This isn't 'Halo'. There's no hint book to get you through tough missions and reveal all the answers. No 'boss' creatures (other than capital ships), and griefers live a short, unhappy life in the game, due to a bounty system that all but assures death to those who fire at will on anything that moves (especially space stations!)

That said, there is combat, even if it's mostly optional. BUT, there is also trading, mining, exploring, and pirating - plus the joy of owning and upgrading your own ships. This may appeal to you. It may not. Frankly, I don't care, but I'm getting back in the game now...

This game is everything the genre has been missing for the past 20 years! An astounding achievement! Combat, trading, mining, exploration in a galaxy with 400 Billion star systems. There is no other game like it!

Unbelievable. Simply gorgeous to look at. Space is big really really big and you play a tiny part in this magnificent universe. Flying around your jaw will drop. It is daunting at first with no clear direction, all I can suggest is complete the tutorials and then decide if you want a life of crime, trading, bounty hunting, mining or a slight mixture. This game caters to all your whim's but you must put the time and effort in. Or you could just become an explorer and get paid to do it! What are you waiting for get in... an adventure awaits - in space. Expand

Bar the lacking barebones multiplayer this game is currently the best in the genre. It's not your typical MMO and once the multiplayer has more work it will be up there with the likes of WoW, Counter Strike and LoL in genre leading games. Graphics are stunning, amazing visuals and a perfectly rendered universe of immense size and quality. Planets, rock and nebulas are well modeled and the game optimization is good. It looks alright on a low end system and breath taking on a high end one. Sound fits the game profile well, weapons, engines and the universe sound as you'd expect a space sim to, all down to the cool computer voice and hyper drive explosions. Gameplay for Elite veterans or space sim/flight sim enthusiasts is easier but expect a steep learning curve in a game that rewards for practicing and putting time into. This isn't an Eve Online type game so don't expect an MMO with stats and numbers this is pure skill based flight game, there is some grinding but you won't be grinding 10,000 bore you'll be flying to space stations in different systems trading, mining and fighting.

This game isn't for everyone so check your a fan on this before buying! Give it a year and this already solid foundation will be with the best games ever!

First minute the game takes your breath away and then it entertains you for another couple of hours to end up like a meditative tool for hard working individuals. What a waste and shame for a game in such beautiful environment. [Issue#253]

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
