My first impressions just minutes after release:
    https://youtu.be/elg5-5-4UwM

As of 23.05.2021, 4 days after release:
    The good:
    + station interiors look nice
+ stations are populated, some short voiced dialogues
+ infantry conflict zones are very basic but fun, check out my vid here:
    https://youtu.be/hqY359KMXRo

+ space legs indeed make the game even more immersive, ships look great from this perspective
+ I personally like some of the guns, and the jetpack is a nice thing to have
+ galaxy map has been improved (imo)
+ good number of new on foot missions
+ cutting stuff with the welding tool is a nice small thing
+ more content for exploration (not speaking about QUALITY, just QUANTITY)
+ not bad on foot animations
+ the short cutscene when you're dropping into a conflict zone on foot is cool, so is the one when you are respawning in a dropship

    The bad:
    - preordered the game? You gave us money in advance? well, s**t, too bad, we won't rent additional servers so you can play it on day 1
    - horrible performance, unoptimized trash, on recommended specs it's a rollercoaster between 20 and 140 FPS without vsync (ryzen 3, 3300x, 1060 GTX 6GB, 16GB RAM) on ultra, and hardly any better on low. You will dip under 30 frames regardless of the settings if you are running a similar rig, but ppl with 3060/70s also report huge performance drops. Just go to reddit.
    - input lag both in menus and when moving, press escape to enter menu, wait 2 sec for it to pop up. Meddling with game files reduces this slightly, but I didn't pay $40 to fix someone's garbage
    - the new graphics are much WORSE in general; the new shadows make everything too dark, Manyt lights almost don't give any light at all. I mean, look at ship interiors, compare the interior of the Cutter between Horizons and Odyssey, you can't see any detail in that ship now. The UI lighting looks way off. The "skybox" for space lacks details, stars, the nebulae are barely visible, there is no awe there anymore. Planets have better textures but they don't look better in many cases, some seem to be seriously bugged, lacking the eye candy,, terrain features, colors or atmosphere. Earth-like worlds are bright af for some reason now, a stark contrast against anything else. Even the brightest neon decals on your ships and SRVs hardly emit any light. The only situation where the new lighting and shadows work nice is during firefights at outposts when running with a flashlight makes sense, and in station interiors. Apart from that - the game looks much worse, and runs like trash in outposts (frames generally nosedive when you are close to "gliding" towards a planet). Minimum viable product in terms of performance.
    - bugs, NPCs stuck in station interiors, crashes
    - no missions for coop
    - weapon and suit engineering, extra grind
    - station interiors are literally ONE ROOM + your hangar + shuttle hangar, compare this to the stations and cities in "the other space game"
    - cannot walk inside ships, you literally get teleported inside and outside
    - I'd argue that most of the AI revamp is worse, but maybe I'm just used to the previous one
    - character models are not for the year 2021, and definitely not with this performance hit
    - right now there is a split of playerbase between Horizons and Odyssey
    - ground troop AI is weak, they often stand in the open and just pew pew, they get hit - single dodge side ways. Sometimes they do take cover, but only sometimes
    - qunatity over quality, the new missions are like any other missions in elite, very basic

That said, I feel sorry for the frontline developers who worked on this and were obviously forced by Frontier's s**t management to release this. As with Cyberpunk, this needed at least another half a year to be tested and polished.

If you're still not convinced this add-on is trash, just watch Obsidian Ant's and Yamiks' videos. I'm having more fun playing "the other" space sim that is endlessly in alpha.

4 gigantic patches and several hotfixes later:

Rendering engine, lighting/shadows, planetary tech, and optimization are still broken. Numerous audio and gameplay bugs have been introduced. GPU usage and temperature are still unacceptably high. Frame rate is still erratic and often unacceptably low.

Odyssey is years away from being in an acceptable state, and may never be.

Elite Dangerous core game brought me back really good memories of playing Escape Velocity when I was a kid. This expansion basically took all those good memories and stomp it to the ground with the half finished gameplay and features and anything cool about the game was placed behind a even worse grind wall game loop that slowly destroys your motivation to play this game. DO NOT BUY.

Broken graphics. Textures, shaders, lights post-processing. All is gone in comparison to Horizons.
Totally not optimized. The fps is twice or three times lower than in Horizons.
No need to talk about game-play bugs and issues when the DLC (not the game!) isn't working.
The state for now is something like pre-Alpha. Don't buy.

This is a Beta. There is not way around that fact. Frontier can call it a full expansion if they want, that doesn't make it true. Performance is garbage, many features that were already in horizons are gone, outfitting is a nightmare, conflict zones bug out, missions bug out, getting in your ship glitches, getting out of your ship glitches.

Frame rates in the single digits. What used to be a solid 60fps in the worst areas is now regularly running in single digits WHEN IT ACTUALLY RUNS.

Missions are generated with impossible to complete parameters. You won't even know it's impossible to progress till you arrive on-planet 10 minutes later. Now that you'll be force to abandon the mission, you'll have a 100,000cr bounty on your head. Your only mistake was buying this DLC.

When you can complete missions they will be disappearing from the mission list to never be seen again with no reward or indication. This has happened during every single session of this game I have attempted since Odyssey has launched.

Which, at this point, has taken weeks to get a response back.

I used to get a pretty solid 60fps in even the most intense of times, but now frame rates in the single digits is the norm. I'm talking you'll spend most of your time at around 10fps in the lighter and more barren areas. Less anywhere else.

Missions are generated with impossible to complete parameters. You won't even know it's impossible to progress till you arrive on-planet 10 minutes later and find out that the planet they sent you too can't even be disembarked on, or the thing they told you to steal isn't there, or the NPC is hovering 200m under the ground or just flat out not there. Now you'll be force to abandon the mission, you'll have a 100,000cr bounty on your head. Your only mistake was buying this DLC.

Their promised and vaunted new planetary build tech (which they said during the Alpha was total cool you guys, we just haven't added it yet! It's gonna be so big pinky promise!) flat out doesn't work and they have said they have no idea how to fix it. Which has left every celestial object having blurry, unprocessed landscape smeared with grimy layer of Vaseline.

When you can complete a mission they will be disappearing from the mission list to never be seen again with no reward or indication. This has happened during every single session of this game I have attempted since Odyssey has launched.

Spend 2 hours working on your missions to have them disappear from the quest log as you lang on the station to turn them in. These are not quick missions where just walk outside the settlement kill some rats and come back. Traveling is a chore in this game. Each mission will probably take you a half hour to complete.

Utter disaster of a DLC. Everything is buggy, performance is staggeringly bad, and at it's core, the implemented new ideas are done very lackluster. This should have not been released. At least not as a paid DLC. This should have been free, and even then people would probably choose not to play the new content.

The light atmo effects are beautiful, the space legs make the planets feel more vast and amazing, the new planet gen is improved in my opinion but I do know there are people who do not like it.

However there is nothing else to do meaningfully. They added ground conflict zones which is cool but doesn't add much to the gameplay loop. And trading pilots are ****ed cause there's nothing here for them. Take away the bugs and server crashes this expansion is still missing a lot. Dedicated Explorers will enjoy this expansion if you tend to go find amazing sights. But that's it...

Again I am loving this and feel like it's $40 well spent and if you share my love for exploring then get it you won't regret it.

But if you're a Combat or Trade Pilot, you do a lot of BGS or PowerPlay gameplay, Xeno Hunters, and Cannon Research then don't get this as there is little to no reason for you to do so.

You can fly to a planet, deploy a ship-launched fighter, destroy an outpost while your hired NPC Crew controls your ship and you are in your fighter, all with detailed models an interiors. Or viceversa, you can send your NPC crew in a fighter to do so. Whether your Crew Member (or another player) is controlling your ship-launched fighter or your main ship (while you are on your super-fast fighter), there is a number of order you can give them (follow, guard me, attack the target, maintain formation, etc)

Want to deploy on land? Land with your ship, then deploy your SRV (vehicle) that is weaponized and explore, analyze, collect. Get out of your vehicle and explore strange places on foot, then return to your vehicle to keep exploring. Or you can directly deploy on foot from your ship. Transfer items between your backpack, your vehicle and your ship. Dismiss your ship and call it back later.

Explore stations, outposts and other facilities on foot, collect valuables, investigate, kill enemies that show up to stop you or scavengers who want your valuable cargo, buy a new ship, or two. Be a pirate, an entrepeneur, a smuggler, a tycoon, an explorer, mostly anything you want (diplomat is the only 'career' I think it's not available yet). Sell your mapped system charts and probed planet surfaces, increase your reputation with a certain faction and gain access to restricted star star systems or ships. Explore the unexplored, survive, enroll in the military, play with friends each on their own ships or vehicle, on foot or give them a seat in your ship to control your turrets, your ship-launched fighters of your SRV land vehicle and explore together in public of private sessions.

Or play solo if you want to farm engineering materials alone and not disturbed (you can still chat with your friends and the people in the solar system, but they won't show up physically). Upgrade the many, many modules in your ship, go beyond that and engineer them and add them one of the many experimental effects. Mine an asteroid field, refine with your onboard refinery, buy and sell.

The possibilities are many. But more importantly, enjoy the game your way.

Yes, Odyssey has had a rough start but it can only get better from here. It WILL get better from here.

And ship interiors are probably next.

Elite Dangerous is slowly becoming Star Citizen... years before Star Citizen is finished.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I updated my NVidia and Horizons and found no real issues . Seems the game is developed for future hardware updates such as DDR5 and 1 NM CPUs which will increase performance . I got about 30 FPS at 4 K on a PC from 2015 , I7 , 16 GB ram , new SSD and RTX 2080 . The game DLC has 3 main game loops , salvaging , exploring and conflict battles on foot . As there are so many maps that could be discovered with many lighting effects , I can`t think of any other game that is similar . Many negative reviews on Steam with issues that I have not encountered and playing the Alpha the performance slightly got better . As this is a very novel type of game it seems very difficult to compare and seems at the cutting edge of organising a Galactic map with immersive gameplay as seamless as possible , as you can encounter a battle on foot , use external camera and passively view the action across the area . I look forward to updates and refinements to Odyssey as the developer has updated the previous Horizons updated regularly . Expand

A high-end rig may be able to brute force its way past some of the technical flaws, but questionable design choices and rough FPS systems aren't going away anytime soon. This could be a huge boon for Elite when its finished, but it just isn't there yet.

*// FDev pulled a Cyberpunk 2077 with Odyssey. Either wait for incoming updates, or stick with Horizons until after the fall console release. //

*Frontier has cancelled all further console development--yes, that includes the new 4K boxes--to focus upon the PC version. Probably smart from a business perspective, but from what I've seen of the admittedly improved state of Odyssey, you wouldn't be missing out on anything worth your time unless you're a hardcore Elite fan with an extremely powerful rig.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a fundamental shift in how this operates - literally. From space to the ground. Taking those first steps on a planet's surface after having landed there is simply awesome, and is decades in the making for fans of the Frontier franchise. The unfortunate reality however is that the performance is currently letting it down. Serious optimisation work is a necessity to iron out a multitude of issues - albeit it's probably not as bad as some are portraying in the immediate aftermath of release. While the new gameplay mechanics come with some variety for those bored of simple space combat, the shooting on the ground also needs a good deal of attention, with AI, and the general standard of combat, alongside the amount of different locations generated on planets, all in need of work. The thing is, this is a journey; a road map, and this is just the first staging post. Hopefully there's a lot more to come down the line.

While the base game attracted players with the vastness of space, this add-on narrows down the scale and has you complete missions on foot. Sadly, this pretty exciting idea was executed poorly. New tools (e.g. blowtorches and scanners), cool planetary facilities, and procedurally generated missions won’t prevent you from being swamp with repetitive tasks and samey visuals. Additionally, Odyssey is unstable and poorly optimized. [08/2021, p.67]

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is an ambitious addition to the Elite formula that doesn’t quite hit the highs it should. It instead serves as a preview of what the game may be like in 6 or 12 months from now, and is hard to recommend as it currently is. Personally? I’d wait and see how Frontier Developments improves the game. Let’s face it, there’s still plenty to explore in Horizons.
