Elemental Exiles is an RPG deckbuilding roguelike. Overcome challenging battles and adapt to unexpected narrative encounters as you grow your deck and explore to complete your chosen characters personal quest.

Each of the 12 playable characters starts in a different area of the map and has their own unique starting deck and personal quest to complete. You'll have 4 characters to choose from at first, but the other 8 can be unlocked by finding and defeating them on the world map or by achieving their other unique unlock criteria.

The map features over 200 unique locations and, even if you fail your quest on a particular playthrough, the parts of the map you uncover will remain. Discover the locations of unique, permanent bosses and rest areas and then use that knowledge to plan out routes that are a good match for your current deck and quest goals.

Elemental Exiles has good card-driven battles, although there’s not much that fans of this genre have not seen before. It is important to investigate card synergies and decide how to shape a deck to deal with big groups and bosses. The game gives players all the info they need to make good decisions and always feels fair. The shared map that all characters explore is a good one and it offers a good mix of narrative encounters, normal battles, and boss engagements. The unlockable heroes might take some time to find and defeat but all have interesting associated playstyles. Elemental Exiles has strong core mechanics and will satisfy anyone looking for variety and tense battles.

Elemental Exiles is a fun deck-building game with characters that are unique and have their own abilities. Being able to explore locations in any order you want was a cool touch.

Solid deck building fundamentals are let down by a lack of progression and weak not-quite-RPG questing. If you like the idea of a deck builder with a relatively open overworld and a cheery fantasy vibe, you might still enjoy this one, but it's hard to recommend above its more sophisticated indie peers.

Elemental Exiles tries to put a spin on the traditional deckbuilder. It is somewhat novel to see an identical map in use for each playthrough, as it makes the easiest routes more obvious. The biggest additions are the durability system and how elemental damage affects shielding. Despite being simple, these ideas create a whole new way of deckbuilding to dig into. However, there’s minimal story, encounters repeat after a few quick runs, and there’s nothing enticing about the presentation. This leads to a pedestrian execution of an otherwise solid concept. It is enjoyable in short bursts due to the variety, but the interest quickly drops off when things start to repeat.
