Duke Nukem is a big step in PC game history. In the early 90s where Sega and Nintendo had their Sonic and Mario, the PC had Commander Keen and Duke Nukem from ID Software. In the early 90s where Sega and Nintendo had their Sonic and Mario, the PC had Commander Keen and Duke Nukem from ID Software. Compared with the japanese games, the us-american ID games of course have guns. Duke Nukem is definitly much more orientated on shooting than Keen, but also has great platforms to cross jumping, a slight story in the background and a big variety of enemies from simple robots and small shooting tanks to flying drones and wall-creeping aliens or mutants. The feature Duke Nuke presented as one of the very first plattform games was the health bar, allowing you to be hit ten times until you die, unless you find some soda to drink or chicken to eat and refill your health. When I was a kid we used to play this game for hours, and didn't have the feeling to miss anything without Sonic or Mario. But looking back from today I understand that the PC jump and run platform titles like Duke Nukem at that time never had an as smooth scrolling through the levels, only one background graphic, no prallax scrolling and only 16 colours. But anyway the game has enough variety to show and a good leveldesign making you want to know more. One of my personal favourite jump and run games, or plattform games how they were called later.
