The bossfights are cool. Not that I love anything about them, but they are fun and not too easy or hard. Every one of them is different and none is bad, well maybe the thing underwater. Classic boss fights. The weapons are cool, well balanced, have nice animations and fun to dispatch enemies. The enemies are well varied, have good AI and get dismembered nicely. I did not like some of the levels, very boring, sometimes tedious and annoying. Often I did not know where to go or what to do. The levels where you play a small Dookie are interesting (esp. the kitchen fights). There are multiple spots where you stand in a field and surpress waves of incoming foes - that is poorly made. The interaction with facilities are ok, though I didn`t find the games too engaging. You also get killed many times because the game has weird scripting. With all that said, I had some fun, I could not get bored to the extent I`d quit playing. Overall the game is easy and simple to play. A standard FPS I`d say.

I Wanted to like this game.. I wanted to,, so Bad. But it has been a letdown. Reason why, while it isn't a modern game by any stretch, be it looks, gameplay or any other aspect, what it does is that it does try to be modern, which it shouldn't have. it should have stayed closer to its roots.

I like this game a lot and I just don't understand people and critics who are giving negative reviews. OK you have some dated graphics and and a few flaws in level design, but that isn't enough to give this game a bad score. This game does not deserve all these zeroes. It is a good game with solid multi-player and single-player experiences. lots of hype ruined this game for many but to me the hype only made it better. humorous dialogue, good level design and solid game-play make this game a 10/10

Storyline 9/10 - The one liners that made the previous Duke Nukem games so funny are back, it needs a little more of them, and the story is your over the top cliche american macho man, saving the world. But its represented in that humerous way that will win you over, you may even shed a few tears. (specially with the Holsom Twins RIP) :(

Level Design 10/10 - Some people say the level design is a bit bland, far from it, It borrows from the half-life franchise, on puzzles ,ect and the Rat size levels are just brilliant and funny, It may be copying but it works really well.

Multiplayer 6/10 - The multi-player is pretty sound, if your willing to over look the flaws, theres a server browser though it might as well be matchmaking since of the lag and lack of dedicated servers.

I enjoyed this game very much, and i'll tell you why its been getting so much hate. The people who are hating it are the people who played Duke Nukem 3d back in the day. The overpowering guns of the past seem to be gone as more artificial limitations are placed (i.e. you can only hold 2 weapons at a time, presumably to keep it simple for the console releases). Dukes one-liners seem to be misused, but there are some fun ones in there. The open worlds were replaced by linear corridors. And the fun was replaced by trying to explain itself. I was really surprized that when I went into video settings, 1080P was recognized in-game. The casino was greatly detailed, there were quite a few maps of it, the stripclub, and the remote truck as well as other neat stuff. Didn't like the drawnout stretch of shrink as often as it was but every part of the game was thought through and given detail. The smoothness of the game was great, the difficulty had artificial intelligence built-in to govern gameplay dynamics, which gave respect to the control system of the original game, FPS. I'm giving it a 10 for a game that expands upon previous steps up in fps gameplay, The **** looked real. The faces were right-on for a game, great detail with smoothness. The faces were obviously not meant to look real, doll-like really, but I imagine giving one much detail would lead to not only an artist costs, but higher model expectations as well. It was great to reminisce on, I unlocked all maps in about 3 days of hardcore play on next up from easy. Expand

By now I'm sure you know what Duke Nukem is about: some blonde macho-man who loves the ladies is on a killing spree against aliens. The plot is completely throwaway, it's just an 8-hour action game where you fight against aliens in varying environments. The game is pretty enough (on PC, I can't speak for consoles, I hear they have quite a bit of issues!), the classic monsters and weapons from Duke3D made their return, the humour is there, there are some awesome interactive things and the action feels satisfying.

Though, while I feel many of the very negative reviews are the way they are solely because of the long wait, I must admit I too expected more from the game. The 2001 trailer hinted at something that would be very epic... in the end we got something that's fun to play and definitely not generic, but after such a long wait it's only natural to expect more. Not perfection, but just... more. The game ended quite abruptly after a recycled bossfight and the game just feels ironically unpolished and rushed in some places. If you've followed up on DNF's development the reason why that is so, even after 15 years, should be obvious, what with multiple "restarts" and ultimately moving to a different company near the end of development. DNF shines in some parts whereas it is a mess in others.

I am hoping that they will release the planned Single Player DLC and that for that, they will be able to properly polish it from the start. Hopefully, it will not be such a double-edged sword and will be able to please more players.

It basically brings nothing new to the table, nothing that hasn't been seen before; there is no shame in "borrowing" ideas, the best also do it, but doing it badly is a huge nono, and that's basically everything that was done here, old bad ideas made worse and mushed into the rough shape of a game. Just as this review it got tons of useless filler. Did i mention it looks medieval? The only good thing is the dukes voice. So II picked teh game up on Steam summer sale for 50% off and it is worth every penny. I have enjoyed this game very much and despite its many shorcomings I think the low score is not deserved. Yes, it is not a ground-breaking masterpiece as the original. However, it is still a lot of fun and in that department it is a much better than many recent FPS games which had much higher score. So I think the low score is a result of unfulfilled expectations. The gameplay to me mostly reminds HL2 - some easy physics puzzles, some throwable objects, use of improvized weapons to kill enemies and it is equally as scripted. Some dated but funny and very nostalgic mid-1990s "macho man" style of humor. This actually has been critisized a lot but I think it fits Duke's character very well - according to the story-line the guy was sitting in his layer isolated from the world for 12 years. So yeah, he has missed the wave of political correction that came since. We can't blame him. And should aliens attack in real life we would need Duke kick their a** and take names. My biggest let down is the limit of just two guns at a time. You basically have to choose guns for which ammo is available. For an old-school shooter that is also very scripted it takes away the fun of experimenting killing the waves of the enemies in as many ways as possible. I mentioned waves of enemies, well, they are not here either. That is my second problem with the game - number of enemies is small but their AI level is low. It should be either a) few smart enemies or b) hundreds of dumb ones. So the game tends to be a bit too easy.

In summary: - The good: It is fun, good old-school shooting, the script is good, some puzzles are innovative, - The bad: dated graphics, limit of two primary guns, dumb console-style tapping to acomplish some stunts or open doors, too easy. Also too much loading.

Whatever happened (or failed to happen) at 3D Realms during the development of Duke Nukem is an amazing lessons for us all, especially the video game industry. It teaches us above anything else how challenging and difficult making a good games is, that its much much easier to fail while making a game rather then succeed and that we should cherish every game that does work well. In the end DNF is mediocre at best. Its dated, lacks much charm, the graphics are bland to crapish, the female human models are atrocious, the humour at first is kinda ok then drifts to lame and the gameplay grow tired fairly quickly. +10 years in the making and the only thing the Developers think of doing are sexual and stereotypical portrayals of women. It feels like like thats the only thing the Developers really focused on to be honest. Since this game got a pretty big following I'm assuming the phrase 'sex sells' is in work here. Stay away from this game.

This game was obviously rushed out the door and lacks any kind of depth or attention to detail. The game is the living embodiment of linear and is 10 years behind the times as far as game play is concerned. It's one saving grace is the comedy but all the laughs in the world can't keep me awake while running through a hamster tube maze of boredom.

Graphics are basic but they will play on a low end system.
gameplay is basic but could be fun if your new to FPS shooters.

    My main gripes are,
Load times every few minutes. Most FPS games at least allow you to finish a level before the load screen.

"2 weapon limit, makes the freeze gun and shrink ray pointless since you have to keep hold of weapons that are reliable.

I love t1ts as much as the next man but this game is supposed to be an 18 not a 12 cert for wanking prepubesants. Is this what Duke has been lowered to: searching for **** and f***ng pocorn. ffs

    no story

    boring

I couldn't wait to get Bioshock 2 loaded back up which , thankfully, I had put on hold to play DNF. At least I had a good proper fps game to look forward to.

As i mentioned at the start, Duke3d got huge play time, DNF will never be played again and I can;'t even sell the sh1t on because of steam account.

If I read one more post of someone saying " ooh arn't Gearbox so ace for taking up the mantle and actually getting Duke out here" I think i'll scream. No they are not great they are a bunch of greedy barstewards who saw a quick buck from a huge character that millions of devoted fans have been awaiting for years and years, **** ot not they were always going to make a shed load.

You don't give bonus marks because it managed to survive, you don't give bonus marks because its main character reminded you of the good old days, and you don't give bonus marks merely because others think badly of it. Anyway, despite all the negative reviews, I went ahead and finished the game. It has a good shooter mechanics, interesting weapons, interesting stages of game (mini-Duke, monster truck). I liked fighting/shooting/executing the aliens (boy do they have some new tricks up their sleeves) so yeah the core mechanics were pretty well done. The 2 disputable features: regenerating health and 2 guns at one time didn't bother me too much, although I admit I missed scrambling around looking for health packs when I'm seriously wounded in older FPS. There is also a healthy amount of cultural references (the first boss cracked me up a bit) and one-liners to keep players entertained. NPCs are hopelessly bland, their attempts at humor fall flat on the face (except for a few of them) but nevermind that, that has never been the Duke's concern. What led to the (admittedly exaggerated) animosity toward the game is probably the level design / pacing. While the alien-bashing was fun, too many a times the action is halted in favor of solving puzzles and navigating through obstacle courses. While they are fairly simplistic, they feel very contrived and they effectively stopped the game from gaining momentum. Plus the game is very restrictive in the sense that most of the time you end up in a confined space, fighting off several waves of enemies, and a previously locked door mysteriously unlocks and you go ahead to solve a puzzle. Rinse and repeat. Even if you are not in a confined space, running around doesn't reveal any interesting places (such as the secrets in Duke Nukem 3D) or anything interesting to do (if we disregard the minimalistic interaction with several in-game objects). My conclusion? I had fun. But sometimes the game feels unnecessarily tedious. It would have been a much better game if there were more alien-bashing and way way less puzzle-solving / platformer action. Expand

Duke nukem is a game for simple action and fun, let other developers worry about stuff like superior graphics, realism and storylines.

Still, even with my simple (not to be mistaken with low) expectations, the game didn't really deliver. Don't get me wrong, there were fun parts and even a few original elements, but it just felt thrown together. Even though I know it was actually thrown together in the end, still, after 12 years I expected at least some things to be really polished, but nothing was. Even the music and voice acting was bad, and those things could have been perfected ages ago. The only thing that stood out was the huge amount of pop-reference and sex jokes they've managed to put in the game. It's almost impossible not to find at least one or two jokes that are a little funny.

I could fill a page with con's, but I'll just mention the biggest one. Some levels were very boring. I liked the driving/racing element and also the "mini" levels, but they were repetitive, not really challenging and just didn't seem to end. Some "live cutscenes" had the same effect. There were some really nice levels with challenging fights that weren't half as complex as those boring parts, so it would've been nice if they just added a few more of those. What I really liked was that the puzzles were slightly more challenging than those of most modern shooters.

I'm giving it a 6 because in the end it was entertaining, even though I never got to use a jetpack in single player :(

Eventually I started hearing about Duke Nukem Forever. I was excited for the new game, but I kept hearing that the game would be delayed for further notice. So, over the years I started to forget about the game and felt like it would never come out. However, I was wrong. When Duke Nukem Forever demo came out, I was excited but disappointed. However, I only thought to myself this is only a demo and not the full game. When the full game out, I played a little on the PS3. I loved it, but I didn't like the controls for it, but when I got it for the PC, I was very happy with the game. This game totally takes me back to the 1990s. This game does remind me of Duke Nukem 3D, but however it is missing something. The multiplayer was a disappointment because I remember Duke Nukem 3D had more levels to play with when playing online. I do miss the space levels from Duke Nukem 3D, and I wish they were on the 4th one. I can only think the Hive was a replacement of space levels, but who knows? Other than that, I love the gameplay of this game because you can interact with your environment, such as playing slots or air hockey with someone. The parodies are funny, but not as funny as the 3rd one. All and all, this is a good old fashion game with some new things to bring to the table for Duke Nukem. Overall, the game suffers from a lack of suspense and challenge as it holds your hand and directs your gaze the whole way through like a messed up tour. In terms of design, a couple things had me scratching my head. First, you can only carry two weapons at once rather than an arsenal of weapons. Instead of worrying about what two weapons you should take with you, the game litters areas with weapons for you ahead of mostly scripted events where you will need them. This may sound like a plus to some people, but a perhaps unintended consequence of this is a lack of freedom for the player in how to approach certain areas. Rather than forging a play style around a favored group of weapons or using certain weapons for certain enemies, the game essentially directs the player when to use what weapon for the given situation. In fact, most every enemy encounter amounts to Duke entering an area, waves of enemies entering from one point, and defeating wave after wave until some new scripted event occurs to allow the player to progress into the next area. Meanwhile, the game leaves plenty of weapons perfectly suited for the situation lying around for you to pick up at your leisure. Think of them as turret sections without the turret (and there are plenty of turret sections, too believe me). Even on hard, this presents absolutely no challenge - and most importantly, no fun. Another interesting decision was regenerating health. Your health meter, labeled "Ego," will regenerate after a few brief seconds (even on hard) often necessitating a quick duck into cover. It's ironic a meter labeled ego recharges through players avoiding conflict. Perhaps it should have been labeled "Cowardice" or "Anxiety." But once again, this sucks all the challenge out of the game since, even during what would otherwise be tense firefights, the health meter recharges almost instantly. One feature related to ego bar I did appreciate was that interacting with certain objects in the game world grants permanent bonuses to your maximum health. For example, lifting weights or admiring Duke's reflection will raise his maximum health bar a couple of points. A neat touch but that's all really. Level design is simply poor. It's cramped, and even the outdoor areas funnel you along a fixed path. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors going on with the engine to help mask lazy design and muddy textures. Puzzles abound and more often than not present players with tedious, uninteresting tasks. One example is toward the beginning of the game where Duke encounters a locked gate. The button will not work since it has no power. He has to climb a small trailer, jump in through a window, then turn a generator on. Once back at the gate, the player presses the button only to see the gate has jammed and is now glowing (as all objects do just in case you didn't know you could interact with it) to let the player know he can now mash space to force it open. Why didn't we just do that in the first place? I'd like to think that if this game came out ten years ago, it still would've been criticized as the overly scripted, restrictive, and uninteresting experience it is. The game doesn't feel completely dated, it feels like it's lacking a crucial element - fun. This game is for the die hards - the people who preordered this game twelve years ago and still have their receipts. Only obnoxiously loyal fans of Duke Nukem will be able to find this game entertaining. For the rest of us, it's better to just to move on. Expand

I believe this game is receiving a lot more hate than it deserves. It is far from a perfect game, but most games are far from perfect. Overall, I enjoyed the time I played this game.

My personal complaints against the game are that it tries too hard to have the both of both old first person shooter play and modern play. I wanted to carry multiple guns, I wanted to actually have to worry about health, and I wanted levels that I could run around in circles doing things on. Instead, its the standard 2 weapons, regenerating health, and rather linear levels. Just like most of the shooters I have played in the last couple of years. Those are just my main complaints.

There are multiple types of enemies, and while you will find the standard grunts and the pigcops to be the most numerous, there is more variety here than most modern shooters. Of course, having aliens to fight as opposed to humans helps with that aspect.

The weapons are quite varied, and while most were taken from Duke Nukem 3D, the AT Laser, AT Captains Laser, Railgun, Enforcer Gun are all new, and the Freeze Gun has been modified quite a bit. Every gun is unique, there aren't any that are essentially interchangeable.

While the levels are very linear, for the most part they are fairly unique and fun. Sadly, even the big levels are broken up into smaller parts. I would have like more secrets and Easter eggs . It was nice to hear the "one dead space marine" line though. I feel they put in a decent amount of interactivity in most of the levels, it just starts to feel a little sparse towards the end. Its nice that they put in Frisbee's and paper airplanes to throw around. Three of the more interactive objects feel a bit off, but they aren't impossible.

The graphics aren't bad. They aren't spectacular, and the humans seem to be animated fairly stiffly. But that isn't a big deal because most of the humans don't last too long anyway. I don't think anyone should be ashamed of these graphics, but it shows that the game is a little older than its release date would indicate.

As to people who are offended by this game, or don't find it funny? It isn't too offensive as far as I can see, but people are allowed their own opinions. I was laughing quite a bit during this game. Maybe I just have a sicker sense of humor, but most of the jokes and one liners were funny to me.

Is Duke Nukem Forever an amazing game we have waited over a decade for? No, its not. Neither is it the bad game many of the professional reviewers make it out to be. It may not be worth a buy, but its certainly worth a rent. I myself, am glad that I bought it. I was thoroughly entertained.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I grew up with the very first duke nukem games along with other fond childhood memories such as Sonic the Hedgehog on the master system. Duke Nukem will still be one of the best gaming icons along side some of the best. But while we all want things to be amazing everytime we all have to have a moment where we think, "Why couldnt they just leave it alone". It happened with Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic Unleash. Now it has partially happened with Duke Nukem Forever.

Plot wise i wouldnt expect anything too complex, Duke's a hero worshiped by the world, suddenly the aliens come back pretending to make peace but then it all goes wrong and carnage takes over. Much like duke nukem 3d all the women are kidnapped, stripped and impregnated with aliens. This leaves duke pissed and has to go out and do what he does best, kick ass and chew bubble gum...and he's all out of gum. While this game may have more plot than previous incarnations it still feels almost cloned or too similar to DN3D.

The voice actor for Duke Nukem himself embodies the character well, while most will find duke a sexist, narcassistic, violent gum chewer he still has some fairly funny one liners and is at his best when shrunk down to size. This new outing Duke Nukem Forever got me interested when i watched the trailers. Obviously the graphics are a little dated but then again when Sonic the Hedgehog 4 came out many complained about the look on HD consoles. Again the same problem paluges DNF. Some of the enemies, items and scenes are pretty good looking but once you reach a certain point or distance you start to notice some of graphics begin to suffer such as some of the aliens look pixelated when very close. Nearly every creature is just a HD remake of the Duke Nukem 3D enemies, from the Pig Cops and Octo-Creatures to the Warlord and kidnapped women.

Gameplay wise the overall controls are similar to the previous games in the series. Some new additions have been made to series during its 15 year development (sadly most of the innovations made have now been done by other games), here are a few examples: 1, More interactivity with objects, nearly everything is interactive or destructable. From writing on a whiteboard with a marker pen to photocopying your arse on a photocopier, the developers have made nearly anthing possible even playing pool or air hockey was something new and nice to see.

2: The ego bar that is introduced works like a shield, this can be improved by doing very egotistical things like flirting with yourself in a mirror, lifting weights, looking at a porn mag, even having a piss in a urinal improves your ego meter.

While the game has tried to introduce new concepts and interactivity within a game enviroment, most of these ideas have now been implemented by other games developers already before DNF.

While the last installment in the series brought upon itself alot of criticism this game will no doubt still have this reputation long after people have forgotten it. Like its predecessor the game makes use of alot of Female characters. Mostly strippers or kidnapped victims of the aliens which have been stripped and impregnated. This game though has made it more disturbing by having any women who are being used to birth aliens literally bulging before exploding in a shower of gore. On top of that each victim now cries out for help which makes it more unnerving. Duke does have the option of killing them but NO rewards are given for this but No penalties either. This may put off anyone new to the franchise and even some of the more die hard fans.

One new addition to this FPS is the driving sections, they handle similar to grand theft auto but with a nittro boost that can be used to jump huge ravines, etc. This has been a welcome addition but like the rest of the game it is lacking some refinement.

One of the major complaints i have is the lack of animation on Duke Nukem himself when you see him in a mirror. All other characters and Ai's have very fluid and natural movements but duke moves like a first year animation students first attempt at a walk cycle for a character. Some more care and attention on the movements would be good.

Overall I feel that after 15 years of waiting this title has been both a nostalgia trip and a little disappointing all together. Graphics wise it is a few year behind most modetn titles and could be improved significantly. Plot is just a bit thin but with DN its never about plot. Some of the interactive items and games were well made but could be refined a little more. The lack of detail in some of the levels made the game feel rushed even after 15 years of development it still looked half finished.

To me personally this has been an average game in the series, possibly the weakest of the franchise. It tried to come in with a bang but it turned out to be a wimper. Its not going to be game of the year but it will still be one to try out but i wouldnt recommend keeping it.

I think I, along with the most of us really wanted to like this game, but DNF proved to be a disappointment. The game is clunky, the game developers seemed to be confused on whether to add outdated mechanics or include newer mechanics, and they did add both, but not in a good way. The levels are bland and boring. The Art style does not stand out. Honestly, all around disappointment.

So, of course I was excited when I initially heard Gearbox announcing they had bought the rights to the game.

Having played the game though, I have to say that it's not as strong as I was initially expecting with all the hype. Graphically, it's fairly ok, but I can see where the console gamers will be complaining, simply because it won't look as nice on the 7 year old computer that is the Xbox. On PC, it doesn't look as bad as people are talking about; while I can see older graphics, it doesn't look like a 4 year old game.

From a gameplay standpoint, the game feels empty. I was expecting twice, or even three times the amount of enemies that were in the game. The horde fights, however, were done quite well, making them a fun but difficult challenge to beat, especially on the higher difficulty settings. The platforming elements in the game definitely detracted from the gameplay; I want to beat the living **** out of aliens, not jump on gears. The one exception I do have against this, however, is when you escape from the dam. That part would almost require less shooting, considering what is happening.

On a side point, I watched a review calling this game out on the lack of originality with its weapons. The game did an excellent job of making the D3D guns more current, while adding in a few new ones. In that regard, Gearbox did quite well

While this isn't as innovating as its previous counterpart, DNF is still a solid game. Had there been more fighting, less jumping, and more reasons to have parents complain like D3D had, this would have been a better game.

People whining about the old-school design should go play Serious Sam, Will Rock, or Painkiller -- these are games that do old-school the wrong way and become tedious. Duke Nukem Forever is a surprisingly rare thing these days, in that it does old-school shooting the right way. It's fast, you're always on the move...you don't have to stay trapped in an area until you kill eleventy-zillion baddies.

If I had any complaint, it would be that the solo game is too short. It's not really all that short compared to most games that come out these days, but virtually all shooters these days are far too short compared to what we used to get years ago.

This is a nearly heart-breaking Duke Nukem catastrophe, I wish I could go back in time 14 years and tell myself to not wait for DNF and not waste attention on it because it's going to blow to the fullest possible extent. The only problem with that, though, is that I'd never believe my future self, as I had so much confidence in 3dR... and how could I not? Considering they made Duke3d, as well as releasing dozens of fantastic smaller games prior? How the mighty have fallen, and how greatly sad it is

Be warned, there is absolutely nothing old school about this game, not in the least, and especially nothing resembling Doom or Duke3d style shooting. This game is the exact opposite of Old School. DNF is slow moving, with slow movement speed, limited sprint ability, few enemies with combat that is spaced far apart, 2-weapon carry-limit with universal ammo crates, regenerating health, quicktime events, and wtih completely linear & boring level design.

Anybody who dares try to trick you into buying this game by suggesting it is old school in even the slightest manner is lying to you through their teeth or simply has convinced themselves of a lie to rationalize the 14 years they've wasted waiting for this game. The game has a slow start, with perhaps the weaker level design at the beginning, but the rest of the game has much more interesting design and fun levels. The game is more linear and easy than it's predecessor, which in my view is good. Hunting for key-cards and med-kits makes the game much slower, so the better pacing improved the game-play. The two-weapon limit was disappointing.

The game is decent, fun, no more offensive than it's predecessor, and is simply part of a wider media crucifixion. Any review which gives the PC version of this game less than 5/10 is simply not being objective and should be dismissed.

What I didn't wait for or want to do is play a version of Myst with guns. Duke is about violence and explosions not solving puzzles to move on which this game seems to have a plethora of, if I wanted to play Leisure Suit Larry I would of reinstalled it. And don't even get me started on the lack of power or general use of the "weapon" The Ripper, I use the word "weapon" very lightly here as it takes up to 50 rounds to take down an enemy, the 911 is better suited for killing this this POS.

The environment is not well suited for a game that requires quick-ish movements and I found Duke getting hung up on debris that he should of easily stepped over. The game is also way to linear and the inability to backtrack to where you have been to get to spawn points for weapons is very annoying as well.

The other major pain is the amount of kick back on weapons or when you are hit by enemy fire. Don't get me wrong, its a nice feature to have as it adds some challenge to the game but shouldn't the damn aliens suffer from the same effect?

Am I also the only one that shoots the trapped women ASAP so you don't have to listen to their inane whining? I know I sure as hell did. I found all the women interaction annoying, surely they could of found better bimbo voice overs, Paris Hilton and Lyndsey Lohen sure could of used the work.

I love Duke3D, absolutely loved it. However my love for the history of Duke is not enough to say this is a classic or great game. I find myself giving it a 4 but then realized its onyl a 3.

    Very very disappointing.

There are a few things that still could have made Duke Nukem Forever a slightly better game, such as more customized game types in the multiplayer, but even without these options, its still a great game. As far as graphics, this game is about average. It does not blow my mind, but its not as bad as many of the other reviews say it is. There are many things you can unlock for the multi-player, by ranking up against other players. The story line was Good, not outstanding but not terrible. Id recommend this game to anybody. However, kids should not play this game, It has allot of nudity, and very crude language. last thing i want is a bunch of little kids saying "I'm gonna rip off your head and S##T down your neck. This is a mature rated game for a reason. Do not buy this kid for your child, unless you feel they are old enough for adult humor. I belive parents need to watch what their kids play now more then ever. Expand

I'm not sure what people were expecting. DNF may not be GOTY, but it's a fun, funny game. In today's FPS environment of Gear of Honor Duty, it's kind of nice to, you know... Laugh once in a while? Get the PC version to avoid load-time issues, and have a blast with Duke.

Forget the negative reviews, they have no idea what they're going on about. This game delivers exactly what it is supposed to: an absurdly masculine, drug-addled sex fiend on a mission to get all the chicks back from the Alien Bastards (tm). A solid shooter with hilarious one-liners and homages to Internet pop culture -- oh, and **** After the "12 f$@!ing years," Duke Nukem still rules.

Old fashion gameplay, but seems original compared to actual standards.

Old school players who have partially forgotten (can they?) how games looked like, will appreciate a dive in the past. Graphics is more than acceptable, the game looks good and very fluid on my HD5870. Action changes from frenetic to exploration, whenever necessary. Duke irony is there and makes the game funny

I'd like to get the most obvious thing out of the way, something professional reviewers seem to be harping on: Duke Nukem is a pompous, cruel, despicable self-centered **** of a character. He's been that way since Duke Nukem 3D and that hasn't changed; and in the spirit of Duke, if you don't like that, tough **** The likeability of the character should have virtually no bearing in a game review, and it won't in this one.

The strongest game-play aspect of the game is it's single-player campaign. The controls are straightforward, the mechanics of the aim-and-shoot game-play are as expected, strong. Everything works as it should and interfacing with it is a quality experience not unlike other modern games. The platforming works well. There are some balance issues throughout the campaign, and the two gun restriction presented in DNF seems like a pretty unnecessary change considering the style of gameplay that's employed. The game will hurdle multiple waves of 2-3 enemies at you and require you to conserve your ammunition with no weapons in sight, and this happens multiple times throughout. It's a strategic game mechanic used in areas where no strategy is required. Ultimately, it ends up being a pain in the ass. The AI is strong enough to put up a decent fight; strafing straight-forward attacks, leading shots, intelligently using explosives, and has particularly clever pathfinding mechanics which make it difficult to relax when engaging multiple hostiles. The AI recognizes choke points and will often avoid them if possible. It would be nice if the maps had more complexity during engagements because I feel that the AI's not being used to it's full potential; but due to the weapons limitations, it may not necessarily be a bad thing.

The weapon arsenal available to Duke is a mixed bag. The shotgun is the star of the show here, useful on virtually every hostile you engage that you can get close to, except for bosses. The pistol is a useable last resort weapon, and the ripper does a pretty good job as a medium-to-far range tool. The RPG also packs quite a punch. The Devastator, on the other hand, is underpowered and doesn't hold it's own in boss battles, where it's necessary to have an explosive weapon to deal damage. The Shrink Ray doesn't seem to fit in the game at all, and the Freeze Ray is woefully ineffective despite having infinite ammo.

The story is standard Duke faire: aliens invade Earth and Duke needs to save the world. It's a throwaway story that Duke's persona does nothing to energize it. The one biggest disappointment I have with the setting is that Duke's 1-liners are largely not funny. There's not a lot of creativity in the application of played-out movie quotes and a surprisingly high amount of recycled content from Duke Nukem 3D.

The multiplayer aspects however leave quite a bit to be desired. While there are plenty of maps, the gameplay modes (Deathmatch/TeamDM, CTF, King of the Hill) are played out, uninspired tripe. While these game modes might have been acceptable in 1998, it isn't now. Multiplayer Duke is worth maybe five to ten hours of entertainment before you'll get bored with it.

The game's graphics aren't particularly strong. Much of the color pallete is either muted or washed out and while the character models have a fair amount of detail, some of the textures look like they haven't been cleaned up since they last converted engines. It's not disgusting or horrible, but the graphics don't do anything to benefit the game-play experience.

For that matter, neither does the sound. The music for the most part, are generic, unmemorable guitar riffs, the environmental and enemy sound effects are uninspired, and the weapon sound effects range from forgettable to, in the case of the shotgun, downright awful. Duke's one-liners almost universally sound flat and indifferent.

The PC version of this game has a handful of technical glitches, with the most annoying one being that when crossing checkpoints, the game will automatically re-spawn you at the checkpoint location, which is disorienting. I also noticed several times where I would shoot an enemy with the railgun only to have them delay their death animation for several seconds. The load time issues that cripple the console versions of this game are nowhere to be found on the PC.

Overall, the game has the feel of quite a bit of effort poured into it, but at the same time hindered by it's extremely long development cycle and, coincidentally rush to production once Gearbox got the rights to finish it. This isn't a great game, but it makes me optimistic that Duke Nukem 4 can be with a more stable production schedule.

It's really no better or worse than these other "Triple A" titles getting churned out in less than a year coming out the gate lately. In an industry filled with disappointing redundant sequel after disappointing lack of improvement sequel, it's kind of nice to have this blast from the past finally get released.

In my time playing the game I encountered only one glitch, which by my count is frankly surprising. Considering what a train wreck this game must have been to work on once 3DRealms was out of the picture I expected to encounter a lot more hiccups than I did. The graphics look and feel a lot like they do in Prey. Dated by today's standards, but still passable. The real tragedy here was the lack of consistency in development and if, god forbid, Gearbox had had more time to work on it this could have been an even better game.

There are certainly glimmers of the game that could have been sprinkled throughout the experience, and to be honest that's not such a bad thing. I'm glad some of the old Duke charm actually made it into the final product instead of none at all. Hopefully when work starts on the sequel they can focus their efforts on improving the gameplay instead of having to clean up a mess first.

Duke Nukem Forever would be quite decent if one felt entirely certain it's intended purely as a self-parody. As is, it doesn't do the expectations, the buyer or the Duke justice – oh, had he rather remained a vaporware legend!

Bottom line: Duke Nukem Forever was not worth the 15-year wait, nor is it worth paying the full $50. However, I cannot deny that I thought it was both fun and funny, which at the end of the day is what this franchise is all about.
