Dread Nautical is low-budget XCOM type game. XCOM type game means it is a turn base strategy game, fighting against some monstruous creatures, featuring character and weapon development as well as strong irreversable choinces all rounded with fun goofy style graphics. Low-budget means that sound and graphics will be repetitive, some features are not polyshed (translation is awful, surely done with an automated free translator) and some mechanics are either totally overpowered (like armor and ranged & root weapons) or completelye underpowered. Also, you will find glitches and bugs, some minor like few app crashes not particularly disturbing because the automated save, others somehow annoying like the fact that they forgot to port a diary recording all miniquest so you don't forget them.

However, the bright side is that Dread Nautical is actually a true game, not just some time-consuming app. There are certainly some novelties and nice mechanics and the developers really putted some great ideas in the game (like the character recruiting). The set up is alse really nice and the weapons, descriptions and character comments are very hylarious (it is great to nock out an enemy with a cd machine while your characters comment "knock out, punk!"). However, the game certainly lacks more time and money invested on it and one would have like it to see it fully developed.

All in all, Dread Nautical is a fair option for XCOM lovers. However, if you missed the original certainly choose XCOM before Dread Nautica

Simply could not play this game properly.

I bought this game on the Epic store, but the game was in French! I checked my Epic Games settings, and everything was configured in English. I tried to register in the Zen Studios forum (which looks sooooo dated btw), and never received the confirmation email. I sent an email directly to the support address that i found somewhere, and

I tried to register in the Zen Studios forum (which looks sooooo dated btw), and never received the confirmation email.

I sent an email directly to the support address that i found somewhere, and asked them why they would not honor the settings defined in Epic Games (i.e. English language).

A few days later, the answer: "you have to install a language pack in Windows".

Oooookaaayyy..... Thanks but no thanks. Just honor my settings in Epic Games and that's it.

Oh, you don't want to? Well, hop, refund, and bye bye.

So sad because this games seemed to be fun... But since I could not even play it... Well...

Keep doing things the wrong way, Zen Studios! Like your dated forum, your dated logo, or your game that doesn't honor my settings. This is very professional of you! clap clap clap

Dread Nautical is an example of how a great concept can turn into an equally brilliant disappointment. The game boils down to collecting items, searching for survivors, destroying a boss or a cluster of opponents, and repeating the same thing. Add to this a crooked camera, average graphics, poor balance of characters and ammunition, completely non-scary world where there is a collection of Necronomicon pages, but there is no place for the sticky horror of Lovecraft, and you get a mediocre product that you don't need to play.

A pleasant combination of multiple genres with a mysterious story and a turn-based core. RPG elements work well but the graphics are only ok. It would just need a little scarier atmosphere. [Issue#303]

The combat is solid, the characters are interesting, and like the ocean the ship sails over floats over, the developers have ensured that their work has impressive depth.
