Negatives: Crashes, really long loading screens, and some very trite, tedious quests. Positive: Gripping gameplay, intriguing history and plot. Neutral: Digital actors are well done. Some of them are so well done but annoying you want to kill them, sacrificing the approval rating of your whole party!

Exceptional scope, writing and character development make this a must own game for any fan of RPGs. The graphics are at times a little lackluster, the difficulty can spike unpredictably and the core gameplay itself offers little innovation but this is more than offset by the experience as a whole. After 30 hours of playing, I have barely managed to complete 1 third of the game.

Being one of the most addictive rpg's from story alone created an amazing game, adding on to that with extremely satisfying gameplay i can play this game for hours. Plus the toolset that comes as a free seprate download. this game is a perfect value.

I don't get it, how can you score a game with 9 or even 10 when the AI is so severely broken and the pathfinding laughable. The graphics are weird and take time to get used to, while animations are above average. They also added "sweet" killing moves, which not only locks your character in that stupid animation but it also slows down the game to a still, and you can't even turn them off. Great animations help with immersion but not if they ruin gameplay. The game tells me that I've played through 51% of the game, but it seems that the calculation is based on the amount of points you have from achievements. It took me 40 hours, did over 75% of sidequests, was invulnerable, killed last-boss solo, with auto-attack(no healing), and this was on normal. (Mages? Slighty overpowered. *rolls eyes*) So all that with the insane lack of useful skills/spells and copypaste of the Lord of The Rings story leaves you with a big pile of poo. Honestly, don't buy into the hype, I didn't, and I enjoyed myself because I expected a mediocre game, and that's what I got. Expand

Best game at the moment!. Im at 36% in the game and the characters and story is so far very thrilling. Combat system and tactical overview nice done and made. Great quest variety. Nice graphics and cut scens. Basiclly very hard to let go when you start playing it as the story drives you forward and you just have to know more about the world and evolve your character.

The realtime / pause mechanism is wonderful and allows the player to orchestrate difficult boss battles, or glide through low-threat encounters with ease. This game will easily suck you in for a good 40 hours before you start to tire of it; hardcore players will spend upwards of 120+ if they can muster the strength to do every side quest. For most of us, 70-80 hours playtime will see the game through. There is a definite replayability factor with intensely hard difficulty levels, 4 unique sub-classes for the main 3, and a large amount of sidequests to complete. Then create a account (pretty straightforward), then redeem your codes. Keep the updater running all the time and start up the game. Everything should download perfectly now and function in-game. The storyline is pretty good but after all very predictable. Absolutely nonsense that you need to pay in order to complete an "optional quest". It's not that I'm a hater of this style of combat, but the pausing constantly and telling each member to do this and that (because although the tactics were a good idea and reasonably well done I could never seem to get them to work) got very repetitive after some time of playing. I could probably blame this on the enemies having very little variation. The game was as challenging for me as others have claimed, with two mages in my group I could practically kept my enemies constantly stunned/frozen/paralyzed. With a few particular mage spells, combat becomes almost a joke (dragon fights are fun, though). The graphics were decent, but not memorable. I eventually turned off the music, but I do this in a lot of games such as this after a while. Despite my criticisms, I can't praise the storyline highly enough it's definitely one of the best I can remember. Combine storyline and dialogue of the quality in Dragon Age:Origins with the open world and more exciting combat of Oblivion (a game I played way too much) and you would have a recipe for success, and obsession. However, Dragon Age:Origins has given me one of only a few instances when I can remember actually 'feeling something' at the ending of a game, which is a real credit to the game. Expand

The character levelling is quite shallow and you feel little more powerful at level 4 than you do at level 20, at which point the game ends - but this isn't the point. The expertly narrated storyline, character interaction and atmospheric world more than makes up for its gameplay shortfalls. Dragon Age offers to engross you with atmosphere & story. It is not going to enthrall your open-world desires like TES & FO3, nor is it going to satisfy endless enjoyable loot and experience grinding like a Diablo clone, or quell your lust for Diablo 3. Sometimes doing what is right, or what you think is right, will make a character you really like (in my case, Allistair) will dislike it. I say machinima...cause thats what it is, its basically a largely interactive movie. And thats not all bad. What is bad unfortunately is the ridiculous amount of micromanagement involved in game play. your "tactics" screen should allow you to pretty much set up your companion characters to run themselves unless theres a specific need for you to switch to one of them but this is not so often the case given some tactics seem to be ignored and NPC AI is so bad that even if you hand develop their characters path a specific direction, if left unattended, regardless of proscribed tactics they will more or less run about willy nilly doing whatever feels best. A rogue character gained as a companion at the early game is quite obviously a bow specialized bard, but if you give her a knife at all, regardless of her proscribed tactics she will switch to melee combat and consistently attempt to be a "rogue" rather than a bow wielding bard, but if you don't give her a melee weapon shes at a severe disadvantage in a close up encounter...which is a lot of the time because depending on the NPC warrior AI's to handle crowd management is laughable and even if the PC is spec'd warrior/champion and running the best agro management talents they can, it doesn't, often, matter as the monsters just swarm past and beat on whoever, or even worse, they do focus on the PC and the healer NPC is too busy shooting enemies with their staff to remember to heal. Overall there is a truly epic RPG here, the storyline itself and the potential for DLC and sequential content is amazing but the combat of the game is what scores this title down from a perfect 10 to a 7. Had they oriented the combat more towards macromanagement and an action RPG feel...I feel this would have been the greatest RPG of all time, but unfortunately given the issues with combat as I see them (I'm aware some people LOVE hitting pause every 10 seconds and fighting in tactical view like an RTS and issuing orders on the micro scale, but theres also people that enjoy self mutilation too, that doesn't mean either is a good thing). Overall, beautiful game, stunning story, superb characters....absolutely mind numbingly stupid gameplay though, PC, Xbox, or PS3. Expand

Unfortunately, the main storyline is incredibly short compared to it's predecessors (a problem made worse by inflexibility with where additional content can be added, and the price of the official premium content), and compared to modern RPG's such as Oblivion, the control system feels like an antique rather than a flowing experience, a real shame for a game with such good graphics. Add into this incredibly long load times and pretty small areas, and the game starts and stops far too frequently for far too long; the story's enthralling enough to stop this breaking the flow too much, but it sure as hell doesn't stop it being annoying. Ultimately, a great storyline and many interesting plot changing elements are let down by unimaginative controls with far too many bugs, a lack of anything to do once the main story is finished, and far overpriced 'premium' content. I think it was a very enjoyable experience. The story was interesting, I found myself talking to the NPCs to learn their back stories. I was a very big fan of the old Black Isle games, and replayed them often. I suppose I am a but of a fan boy, but I like the game a lot. It is just the DLC right at the release kind of chaps my cheeks a bit.

To talk about its strengths, I'd say that DAO is better than most other 1 player RPGs out there. The music is good, the visuals are great, and it was built with the PC in mind which is a big plus, these days. The graphics really do deserve some credit: the fire effects look sick and the world is huge and well modeled. I know I always focus on the negatives of these types of games, but that's mainly because if I actually buy a game, then it must have something going for it. Most games I buy have some quality to them that attracts me enough, initially, to drop 50. That said, the game's UI is just not very n00b friendly. I'd need to sit there for like 15-20 min and decide all these default actions for my party members, and they still do some incredibly stupid shit like run into traps and get blown up by fireballs that come off the screen. I think that's the biggest issue with the game. You can either see more of the enemies in the WoW-style view (which makes it hard to click on your partners and issue commands), or you get zoomed out into a half-assed RTS view where you can't fucking see everyone. I know there's a method to queue up actions for each character, but the UI doesn't do a good job of showing these command queues. The AI setting screen also has some issues, as there's no obvious way to add functions (though I am sure one exists). Also, it all seems very specific "taunt if Hero is being attacked BY RANGE" and the same "BY MAGIC" and "BY MELEE." Is there a way to roll this all into: "peel off me asap negros?" Aside from this is the really variable voice acting. I don't know how review sites said shit like "you can always expect amazing voice work from BioWare!" All these guys must be paid off. It seems like "good voice acting" meant announcing "LF Voice actor PST" in the streets of Britain, as every single motherfucker alive has a British accent, and they all sound super unnatural and at many times mouth-breath. It works in some cases, but it gets wearing in a hurry. Another big issue is just BioWare's character development department sucks ass. Human beings in real life have shit like, I don't know, SUBTLETY!?!? Every character in this game is entirely devoid of the notion. The arrogant, cocky king CONSTANTLY boasts about how he's going to go to war and kill a billion people and shit. Yes, we get it, he's arrogant and battle thirsty. For having him say it that often you might as well have him say "Hi, Duncan, I am the arrogant, douchebag king that totally sweats Gray Warden balls." The issue is that there's no ambiguity; in real life it's often tough to read people and realize what they're actually thinking. There is actually uncertainty and mystery to people when you first meet them. You can stereotype, but it's not always how things are. This game thinks it's being subtle but I've seen less obvious behavior in Disney cartoon movies. The last thing I won't really fault DAO alone for, but it's a general trend that I've been noticing that I think ought to be addressed. This whole idea of choices in games. I wrote, 2 years ago, that Mass Effect had a lot of false choices and characters often said the same shit regardless of what you choose. Same deal here. In fact, you often get replies like you said absolutely nothing. The question, then, is simple: WHY BOTHER ASKING ME FOR INPUT? The decision to give you these stupid choices was probably due to amazing games like Metal Gear Solid 4 getting flack for having too much cinema and not enough action. The solution, to BioWare, was obvious; allow the user to FEEL like they're doing something by making them input random nonsense every few minutes that's disregarded anyway. It REALLY breaks the flow of the game, and there were at least 5 cut scenes where an interesting conversation abruptly stopped so I could be ignored after choosing something from 7 long options. Why the fuck do companies think this is a bright idea? I think developers should just make one story, like a novel, that the player experiences. These decision mechanics are always shallow and unimpressive. If you want to give people complete freedom, then do it. Don't just half ass everything for a bullet on the back of the game box. ASK YOURSELF is it necessary? Is it intuitive? And most importantly IS IT FUN? Expand

I had to restart several fights due to poor AI. There are ways to automate your NPC allies but they often end up getting into trouble, so many times it is best to micromanage them by pausing and giving individual commands. It is frustrating and requires adjusting how you play.

There are several bugs. One bug is on a spell intended to deplete enemy mages' mana. However, it actually replenishes their mana, essentially making the spell worthless. There are a few quest bugs which may force you to reload a previous save or find a solution online.

Awakenings is the best DLC, others are just okay.

To me this game was the complete and utter opposite instant interest day 1 and deep love by day 2 and it never dropped of top10 greatest game list after done its just wonderful.

Played baldurs gate and felt ever since that there just wasnt a equal, to me this is better.
You have a tactical combat thats challenging, you have interesting character builds, and your companions are likely the stars of the show you never thought would be relevant.
The world building is also slightly fresh, its epic fantasy with evil is on the rise and save the world but the humans are kinda grey and plenty of selfish people just trying to make a buck or summon a demon to get better luck while gambling kind of world.

You start off with your main character then can find and recruit a large number of characters and these are most consider the stars of this game.
Most other games these are never really fleshed out they are just mechanically needed to make the combat more complex, your companions are interesting riddles you can plumb and you get small bonuses for doing so didnt think it sounded at all interesting when i read about it but it actually changed the game for better and its to large extent optional you can ignore several if they arnt interesting to you.

The depth though is also the worst thing about it
This game starts out with letting you customize your character and choosing your class.
All of your choices here will determine the origins story you are given.
There’s potentially 6 different stories to be told in this game…
I played the console version of this game, so it’s much more action oriented than strategy based.
You can journey with 4 allies at a time to help you fight enemies and you can gain new allies along your journey,
How you treat your allies and the people in the world around you will determine if they turn their back on you or help you with your cause.
Your allies do a fairly decent job at holding their own... they only got stuck one time in my entire playthrough.
You can equip gear you find on them much like a JRPG, there is tons of micro managing your ally’s skills as well as yours,
Dragon Age Origins is lengthy, but not lengthy because there is so much great content to experience...
The game is long just for the sake of being long... it accomplishes nothing in dragging the story on forever and makes you do more than you should really have to…
The entire game feels like one giant goose chase.
After your origins story the map opens up and you can freely clear it in any order you choose,
The incentive to doing so is there is a blight... demons… an army... you need allies, so you set out into the vast sections to gain those allies...
Each section of the map could literally be their own game… and not necessarily in a good way.
They all have their own self-contained stories that link to the overarching story, but every single one of them follow the formula of the main story, which is you think you’re done but you’re not
you get to whoever you’re looking for but they need you to do this before they’ll help you but when you get there to do what they need there’s someone there that needs you to help them before they can help you help the person that you need to help before they’ll help you..
Its overwhelming and ultimately makes the game feel like it drags on forever
and quite frankly it does... you never feel like you are making any true progress…
It took me 10 hours of playing before the game got even a little bit interesting to me.
There are some really cool sections to this game, again they all feel like they could be their own game...
It’s crazy to look back when you’re near the end and think of the journey you’ve been on and how it was indeed part of this game and not some game you played years ago even though it feels like it.
There’s mages, demons, going through the fade and shape shifting, hunting werewolves down in the forest, going underground to search for a mighty anvil
There is so much to experience.
While Dragon Age’s game world is vast and deep, I found the gameplay and journey to be shallow and tedious.
Due to the delivery of the story, and the constant webbing of story lines I found Dragon Age Origins to eventually feel more like a chore than a game,
After about 30 hours in I was begging for the game to be over, to get to the point, but instead it drug me down another 20 hours of rabbit holes.
If the rabbit holes don’t make the game feel tedious enough, it also does a horrible job at quest progression in general...
You rarely know where you’re supposed to go,
The marker for the quest you’re on only appears when you’re close to the desired location…
and by close, I mean practically on top of it…
Which will lead you right to google to figure out where this person lives since who’s going to really memorize the locations of these people by name?
    I’m not
There’s a Lot to do in Dragon Age Origins, so I can definitely see why people love this game so much…
Even I appreciate the game for what it has going on...
There was just ultimately nothing here to hook me in...
If I didn’t feel obligated to make it to the credits, I definitely wouldn’t have
    I give Dragon Age Origins a 7.5/10

One of the best rpg i ever played. Before The Witcher 3, this game was the king. It was made by Bioware before they sold their soul to EA and remains for me as the last good product of this once legendary company.

If you play this game, go as slow as you possibly can, take your time, listen to all the dialogue and read all the codex. I recommend either the human noble origin or the human mage origin. If you play a mage, make sure you decide what fraternity ideals you think your mage should follow. Decide whether the character you role play believes in the maker or not

The music in this game comes from the heart, there are some moments where you'll just sit back, sip on some wine and just get immersed.

Dragon Age Origins is perfection, so naturally Bioware and the entire industry have stopped making games like this.

The combat, while not tactical in the extreme, is a great challenge.
I played this game on consoles first, and while that's fun, the PC combat is far and away superior.
The ability to pause the action and set certain attack patterns is a lot of fun. It's a joy to plan out boss battles in particular, in terms of party selected to fight, AOE affects used etc. It's a joy because while it's reasonably challenging, it's also very much accessible. Bioware struck the right balance.

It's just a shame that the two sequels chose to ignore all the positive points about Origins really.

I found the entire story to be intriguing and the amount of choices you makes this game feel like a better rpg than Bioware's "Mass Effect". And also unlike Mass effect, you don't get a paragon/renegade dialogue option but more like a "fallout" dialogue option which makes the player feel more open to more dialogue options than just "good and bad" options. Also another thing that was interesting was the approval and disapproval rating, everything you do affects your companions and it can either result in your companion disapproving/approving your decisions and in the long term in can result in a companion leaving if the approval rating is down or even a love interest. And you also take on a few companion missions, which aren't very good. (mass effect 2 fixes this problem.)

But I find the combat DoD system to be outdated, I was really expecting a hack and slash kinda gameplay but the DoD tackles the combat in a different and strategic way. The skills tree isn't very helpful and limited to customization same with the entire leveling up system, it feels to inconsistent which at times it ranks me up too fast or too slow.

But also a huge problem is the PC optimization. it's horrible due to the memory leak so I found myself restarting a game a whole bunch of times and I was angry at this. But in overall content I was very surprised. Dragon Age Origins main campaign left me playing around 48 hours and it's not even 80% completed and with the main campaign DLC completed. The awakening expansion is a very nice expansion which clocks in around 12 hours, it's a fair amount of time to complete but I found it to be short at times and rushed as well. The other DLC (Witch hunt, GoA, DSC, and Leliana's song) are okay but the only ones I recommend is Witch Hunt, leliana's song (because of companion reasons.) and GoA (for leveling up your gray warden) But I would skip buying GoA, and DSC it was lacking detail and in the end... I don't care about it anyways.

So all in all, get this game, It was exciting to play and I was very happy with the overall content and this is a much better RPG than Mass effect. I would buy the Ultimate edition if I had to, to play DA:O and Awakening again.

Other than that, the graphics were not bad at all despite the numerous criticism it has gotten on Amazon. The characters look well-modelled at least, the colours are atmospheric and help make the world and adventure believable and the voices do sync well with the lip movements. The music has moments where it is rousing and others where it's eloquent, overall it's well written and synchronises with everything with never a jarring note. The story is rich in detail and characterisation, totally immersive in its blend of fantasy, adventure and action and you are genuinely transported into the world the characters inhabit. The game play is varied and not overly-simplistic or overly-complex(even if at times Alistair was perhaps too easy to kill, but really that's part of the fun). What was also impressive was the balance of game play and story, they added so much to one another and there wasn't a time where there was too much or little of one. The writing and the voice acting stood out the most. The writing is incredibly intelligent and thought-provoking with some well-judged light-hearted humour for contrast, doing wonderfully in giving the characters distinctive personalities and emotional impact. The character interaction is strong and never stiff. And the voice work adds so much to those qualities, everybody is wonderful and nobody bad but in particular Kate Mulgrew is quietly firm and authoritative and Tim Curry has that subtle smarmy malevolence spot-on. All in all, an outstanding game. 10/10 Bethany Cox Expand

This is one of the best RPGs ever made! I don't even know where to start, the story, the gameplay, the character progression, the dialogue, it's brilliant! I've spent hundreds of hours into the game and i will probably play through it many times. It has great replay value and while the game has it's small flaws, it is still so good that you will barely notice them. 10/10 a must play!

This is by far the best of the series by far. Only 3 games has ever got a hold of me from the get go, and this is certainly one of them. The origin sequence alone is well done, and the surely but steady build up to the final battle right after is always on cresciendo. It is just beautiful. I wish the devs would ho back to their roots and make games like this again.

    The Pros
*The writing in this game made up for the if-ing gameplay ( but that later). The lore for this game is pretty extensive as well
*I loved the companions that joined me in this game. They certainly went to a lot of work on each companion.
*Great Character Customization/ Awesome Origin Stories
    The Cons:
*The combat/gameplay a bit of a mess ( but one will get use to it after a while)
    The Meh:
*The Graphics dose look a bit out of dated but still not too bad once you get use to it

So i would say that this game is on my top five favorites (rpg) games next to Skyrim. Would give this a game a 9 out of ten

Dragon Age is one of the most amazing RPG's I ever played in my 28 years. The world that the game puts you in is very well crafted, the characters seem very real and there are many decisions to chose from. The battle system may seem a bit hard for newcomers but it's actually very tactical and satisfactory. I highly recommend this game to everyone.

A fine example of what a GOOD fantasy RPG looks like (coughs in The Witcher's general direction) Granted some of it's visuals are a bit dated (natural terrain is a bit funky looking, the head pieces are abhorrent and Light/Medium armor classes share the same one model for chest, feet and hand armor) I feel like it works for it.

Gameplay wise, it feels vaguely like an MMO with an action bar of abilities you can use or toggle in some cases, with three different areas to invest in; Attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Charisma, et cetera) which govern your stats, Skills (things like the ability to coerce/persuade people, herbalism) that you can sink 1 point into every 3 levels (2 if you're a rogue) and Abilites which is analogous to the Talent Trees from other games. Special mention to the ability trees, too. They're so heinously varied you can have one of your mages spitting fire and healing one minute, and turned into a giant **** spider the next to maul enemies with. The soundtrack is also stellar, and perfectly fits the game and the world you're in. Make sure you recruit Leliana and listen to her sing near the end of the game, you will not regret it.

The biggest issue I take with it is it's very slow and sometimes clunky, and it's also a little too indepth for me, with the fact that your attribute allocation (and skills in some cases) determine what abilities you can learn down the road with no opportunity to respec without install mods, reminding very heavily of the older breed of RPG that I never cared for (Neverwinter Nights, that sort of thing)

It also holds the very rare achievement of actually making me care about the characters and what happens in the world.

Ultimately, play it if you haven't. If you have, it's probably time to play it again.

The graphics looked dated even then, and bugs remain, but the experience is one you won't forget. The world is beautifully fleshed out, and you'll obsessively check your codex for new lore. I can still tell you verbatim about every single small decision I made despite finishing the game a long time ago. The companions, especially Alistair and Morrigan, have wonderful backstories and react dynamically to your choices. The biggest drawback, in my opinion, is the fact that BioWare did not capitalize on the potential of their living, breathing world and instead went for a conventional story with a mighty monster and a destined hero. Take nothing away from my gripe, however. DA:O is a masterpiece. Expand

Absolutely adore this game. Sadly can never really play it anymore after how bad Inquisition was, but I've played it 10+ times, and it brings fond memories.

    Pros

+ ORIGINS. City elf, Dwarf noble, and mage are the best
    .
+ Multiple dialogue options and unvoiced. Makes it more tailored to you.

+ Companions are far better than the most of the ones in the sequels. Even Leliana and Wynne, who are the most boring companions in-game.

+++ Best companions are Loghain and Sten. Mary Kirby did a great job.

+ Romances do not feel forced or are written for fanservice.

+ Some of the choices in the game are great and often overlooked. Choices like fail to save Irving , double crossing Bhelen, or personally killing Jowan are special ESPECIALLY if they're related to your origin.

+Combat is good. Not the most fun or the best (D:OS takes that), but it’s better than its sequels.

+ With mods, the characters you can still make characters look better than in Inquisition.

+ Music is great. There is a certain magic to it, that is enhanced by certain moments in the campaign.

+ Just a really amazing finale that grabs you, yet is different, each time you play it.

    CONS

-Almost every plot revolves around blood magic. Always.

    - For some reason non-Warden companions don't get the taint.

    - Combat animations are SLOW. This however can be solved by casting haste.

    - There are still bugs that even mods don’t fix because they’re so niche that not many people experience them!
IE, if you personally executed Jowan, he will resurrect and receive a 2nd sentence once you’ve revived the arl.

-Art design is okay. Not my taste. Then again, DA:O was based on Baldur’s Gate. Use armor mods and ENBs if you’re nitpicky like me.

-Dungeons for some quests can get pretty long. Perhaps too long. But you do feel more triumphant at the end of the game.

Overall, still DA:O is a great modern RPG and very enjoyable. Witcher 2 and F:NV had better premises, but with the multiple origins, dialogue options you can choose that is really easy to forget that and enjoy it was a roleplaying experience.

It’s much like VTMB, in this regard, but with added companions as a plus.

PLAY as a Warden who doesn't make all the right choices and sometimes fails.. You will get a lot more out of your roleplaying experience and enjoy it more. Also be prepared to bring a lot of Kleenex.

A grade game, through and through.

  1. If you're into rpgs, or rather if you love roleplaying in general, there's really no need to waste time reading any reviews of this game. The same goes if you regard games like Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2 and the Baldurs Gate-series among the best computer games ever made. Because this game is everything a person like you look for in a game, and so much more. Be aware though, Dragon Age: Origins is not a revolution of the genre, rather it is an evolution, where Bioware has refined everything that made them into a formula as close to perfection as possible. Without a doubt one of the strongest Game of the year-candidates so far this year and a game we will remember with warm feelings many years to come.
