Its also worth mentioning that i did not like tactical combat at all until dao.
Its still not my preferred combat type, however dao had this like **** 3rd person mode they put there (likely for idiots like me) to sort of ease them into things.
you can play 3rd person, then the more your ambition grows, the more the game cranks things up to make tactical combat more, and more essential.

Game is sitting here with a 8.8us as of writing this, despite that being a great score, i still feel the game is largely underrated.
If i had to guess it must have to do with when it was released, from what i remember most people i talked with just where not interested in a crazy deep rpg, with lots of dialog choices.
For sure some people loved the game a ton, but things seem different now, and i think many more people could be interested in something like this now days.

Even all these years later i could not find a similar game until bg3.
Looking at the reception of bg3, also makes me feel like things are a bit different now, and many more people would be interested in a game like this.

I hope when people finish their bg3 playthroughs, and look everywhere for something to scratch the same itch that they find this game, and consider giving it a try.

I know maybe its like "bro, i thought this is a review about dao, why are you talking about bg3?"
It's because the games are so incredibly similar in more ways than i could count.
To list a few similar things they do as an example.

    movement & controlling the game.
    super custom playthroughs each time.
    brutal world.
blood gets sprayed all over characters, and stays in cs.
Fancy hidden auras you could obtain, that give special effects.
very funny banter between companions, especially if they are very different from each other.
notes, and books to read for lore, and reveal secrets in the world.
    Worlds setting.

I can't recommend it more highly, and hope many more people can enjoy this great game in the years to come.

-also it seems essential to include some kind of warning as well that da2, and da3(inquisition) like them, or hate them are really nothing like dao, and more comparable to a generic action game.

The last great CRPG. While decried by CPRG fans as casualization of the genre, Dragon Age actually made it accessible without sacrificing the depth. The choice and consequences narrative is here, although not as extensive as in some games. The story is cliche but with a somewhat interesting universe and decent subplots. The characters are brilliant.

The main thing that drags this game down is the combat. The combat itself is quite good. The classes are horribly balanced though. The encounters are too similar and are far, far too frequent. Combat should not be focused on THIS much in a CRPG game.

That said, a solid effort by Bioware. The series would only decline from here though.

Dragon Age: Origins is a classic fantasy RPG game released in 2009. The game is set in Thedas, a fantasy world created for this game. When you are creating a brand new fictional world, there is always this alchemical aspect, the IT factor, or whatever you want to call it. in short, no matter how good your ideas and writers are, there is always a chance it will fail for no good reason. Dragon Age: Origins has IT without any doubt. The world is just so intriguing from the very start. It deals with all the common fantasy concepts: magic, monsters, dragons, medievalesque setup, etc. But DA:O deals with them brilliantly. It is hard to describe how exactly it is different from other fantasy worlds. It goes deep, it considers all choices, all possibilities, just like nature, just like life. I just love it. The story itself is very good, deals with a classic end of the world scenario that you are supposed to prevent. But the true brilliance of this game lies naturally in the companion system. The interactions with your companions, their personal quests, the banter, all this builds a very strong feeling of real friendship between you and your companions. The graphics is atmospheric, pretty for a 2009 game and you can of course enhance it with various mods and bring it up to date. The game font is very nice and suits the game well. Music is also fantastic, not too intrusive, but certainly noteworthy. Another amazing thing about this game is the range of choices and important decisions you can make. You can play as a saint or as a murderer and slaver, it is entirely up to you. And you can be sure that the consequences of your choices are going to be felt. The developers were very bold with this game and I have nothing but respect for them. The ingame codex is thorough and I wholeheartedly recommend reading everything. I do not usually play most games on the highest difficulty, but here it just seems best to me, the nightmare difficulty is very hard in the beginning. but it gets gradually easier, as with most other RPGs, if you make sensible talent and skillpoint choices. And what negative can I say about this masterpiece? Not much. Maybe a bit more buggy than you would like, even today, but with the sheer amount of choices you can make, it is hardly surprising. This game contains some microtransactions in the form of some Horse Armor type DLCs, but nothing major. No SJW politics either.

DLCs: I like almost all the DLCs. The only downside, as usual, is the steep price to gameplay time ratio.

Awakening - A full scale expansion. I covered that in its own review.

Warden's Keep - Nice dark little DLC, which gives you a bit more information about the Grey Wardens.

The Stone Prisoner - Overpriced DLC, which adds a single companion. Not my favorite by any means.

Return to Ostagar - Title says it all. Ideally played early in a playthrough with Alistair.

Darkspawn Chronicles - Unorthodox standalone DLC, where you play for the darkspawn. Nice idea, but the gameplay is not much fun.

Leliana's Song - Standalone DLC, can be played before the main game and can serve as sort of a tutorial. Very cool story.

The Golems of Amgarrak - Nice little standalone deep roads / dwarven DLC. Contains some of the toughest fights in the entire game. I recommend bringing a well equipped hero.

Witch Hunt - Standalone DLC, which follows the story of Morrigan after the main game. I usually play it last.

I am really trying to reserve the 10/10 score for the absolutely best games, that excel in every way and I cannot stop replaying them over and over. Dragon Age: Origins is such a game without any doubt. Final Verdict: 96 %

If there was one thing that wasn't quite so good, it was that some of the outdoor background art were a little flat-looking. Other than that, the graphics were not bad at all despite the numerous criticism it has gotten on Amazon. The characters look well-modelled at least, the colours are atmospheric and help make the world and adventure believable and the voices do sync well with the lip movements. The music has moments where it is rousing and others where it's eloquent, overall it's well written and synchronises with everything with never a jarring note. The story is rich in detail and characterisation, totally immersive in its blend of fantasy, adventure and action and you are genuinely transported into the world the characters inhabit. The game play is varied and not overly-simplistic or overly-complex(even if at times Alistair was perhaps too easy to kill, but really that's part of the fun). What was also impressive was the balance of game play and story, they added so much to one another and there wasn't a time where there was too much or little of one. The writing and the voice acting stood out the most. The writing is incredibly intelligent and thought-provoking with some well-judged light-hearted humour for contrast, doing wonderfully in giving the characters distinctive personalities and emotional impact. The character interaction is strong and never stiff. And the voice work adds so much to those qualities, everybody is wonderful and nobody bad but in particular Kate Mulgrew is quietly firm and authoritative and Tim Curry has that subtle smarmy malevolence spot-on. All in all, an outstanding game. 10/10 Bethany Cox Expand

Dragon Age Origins is a great game marred by bugs that can corrupt your game saves. I give the game itself 10/10, but I'm deducting two points for the fact that I had to start over due to a corrupt save game file.

Story: I love the story. It's a great, traditional heroic fantasy story that can have a slightly different flavor based on what race and class of character you choose.

Story: I love the story. It's a great, traditional heroic fantasy story that can have a slightly different flavor based on what race and class of character you choose.

Setting: Nice take on traditional fantasy. It feels familiar and fresh at the same time.

Game mechanics: I liked them once I got used to them, but that took some practice. You absolutely need to micromanage your allies, because they are dumb as tree stumps and will make the worst possible decision at all times. That said, the controls they give you to manage the party are quite good and fun. In the end, I would prefer to micromange my party if the mechanics are good and not annoying, and Dragon Age: Origins succeeds here.

    Complaints:

Complaint #1: Bugs. As I mentioned above, my save game file got corrupted and I had to start over. I highly recommend you use the community patch AND Game Save Manager to protect your save game files. I chalk this up to EA being too greedy to fix common game breaking bugs.

Complaint #2: Build consistency. All builds in this game are DEFINITELY not equal, and it's very easy to create a sub-optimal character through no fault of your own. I'm ok with sub-optimal, but you can REALLY ruin your game by doing nothing more than creating the character you want to play.

Complaint #3: Difficulty spikes. Until you "git gud," the game will throw a few super harsh difficulty spikes at you, sometimes requiring you to find cheap tactics online.

The best rpg game I ever played. The world and story are rich and interesting. Characters are well crafted, dialogues are realistic and meaningful and affect the storyline. But I just couldn't stand the relentless grinding you have to endure during almost all quests. Unusual missions involving persuading someone or conducting an investigation of sorts are very few and far between, most of the assignments you get is just room after room after room of tedious enemy grind. At best you'll get some kind of notes during the mission, but most of the time you won't. The plot and the dialog are for the most part decent, but the staggering overabundance of combat pretty much turns this game into one big slog. Almost none of the enemies require any kind of particular tactics, so it's just kill it all to death by any means you possess. Which is just boring. You could retain the same number of enemies, but make them weaker and/or make each type require a specific approach. But no, why bother if we can just copypaste hundreds of the samish boring opponents.
There are smaller problems too. The codex here is a mess, You gotta read every note and every piece of lore you receive the moment you find it, otherwise you'd be treated to a (not so) great time browsing through this poorly executed codex, where it'll take you up to a minute to find some minor piece of trivia that'll take 15 seconds to read.
The bugs are pretty much still there, after all these years. I've encountered ar least a dozen crushes during my first twenty hours of playthrough, and Denerim is plain unplayable unless you lower your graphic settings to medium, or you'll just experience crushes every time you enter a building.
Speaking of the graphics... The game looks average at best. Some of the textures are so blurry it actually hurt my eyes. The first Witcher game came out two years prior and still looked better than DA:O. Fallout 3 came out a year earlier and looked just as good, if not better.
Overall, the game was a big disappointment for me. I'm a big fan of Bioware, KOTOR, Mass Effect 1-3 and Neverwinter Nights are all among my all time favorites. But Dragon Age: Origins, as hard as tried, I just cannot enjoy.

Character based backgrounds add replayability and companions have interesting stories and interactions. It is an overall great rpg which makes Dragon Age Inquisition feel even more like a failure. Not to say that Inquisition is a bad game on its own, but the lack of the real dark fantasy feel, impactful quests and interesting interactions hurt it so much that it more closely resembles an mmorpg game rather than Origins. The level design however is hit and miss. There are some great levels and some bad ones.

I played Dragon Age: Origins for the first time this year as a big fan of BioWare's other works in Mass Effect and Baldur's Gate. I put off playing it for a long time, but I'm pleased to say that - no surprises here - the game is fantastic, and holds up well. The combat system is fun and tactical and it'll make you feel incredibly powerful when you get the hang of it. The characters are engaging and deep, and have established friendship or romance paths.

DA:O shares a lot of similarities with Neverwinter Nights, also developed by BioWare. Especially when you go into the tactical isometric view. I found myself switching to isometric view in just about every battle while I explored in the third person view.

My first run was with a female city elf warrior, and I've got to say - this origin story has aged incredibly poorly. If it released today then it would most likely get slammed for being insensitive and pointless. Luckily, the beginning area is over quickly enough and then its on to the main adventure. Here is when my game started breaking from all the quality of life mods I had installed at the behest of a friend of mine. In the end I ended up just using some cosmetic mods, extra dog slot, some restoration mods as well as "equal love" so I could, naturally, see what the romance for the game's poster child, Morrigan. This led to some amusing scenes where I was occasionally referred to as both a man and a woman in just about the same breath.

I beat the game and then started playing again as the female human noble, this time on the hardest difficulty. "How hard could it be?" I had asked. Turns out, extremely hard. I actually enjoyed it more than normal difficulty, but maybe I'm just a masochist.

I found that the friendship with Morrigan was much more rewarding than the romance, and once I convinced Alistair to stop being such a pushover, he was better in the romance. Speaking of Alistair, though... he's definitely the best character in this game. BioWare games have tended to have this thing where you say one mean thing and the NPC will hate you forever, but with Alistair you can actually joke around and make fun of each other. I think his character is just endearing in a lot of ways.

I then went on to play Leliana's Song (on normal!) which I really enjoyed. It's a fun adventure, and the writing is excellent.

So decided to buy again on steam to get all DLC to play, it is still one of the greatest RPG's of all time.

What makes this game great is the story is very well written, the characters are all interesting, they are so well voiced with a lot of depth and story behind each character, they say so much that they feel almost like real people. Party banter is also amazing and entertaining, amusing and the way they interact with you and each other. The relationships you build with them make them also feel like valued friends and someone you could actually fall in love with. It has the feeling of an epic adventure and it feels like this game has heart and soul which so many newer games lack.

Not a fan of the combat, but doesn't matter since the story is so good and immersive.

I don't think Bioware would make anything as epic as this again as this was the last RPG Bioware made before EA took over and they tend to rush things and make them rather mediocre, generic and take away what made the game special in the first place and are known for buying game studios with unique games that end up being killed and shut down for good. I've accepted that Bioware is pretty much dead when it sold it's soul to EA and is just a zombie shell now.
And will never make another 9/10 game again.

I give this game a 9/10 the last epic game from Bioware, all the DA games past this are quite good but lack the depth and immersion that DAO had. In comparison I would give DAI a 7/10. Though I am yet to play DA2 as it doesn't seem very good to me.

I loved playing through this game again and also enjoyed all the DLC. If you love a good story this is worth playing through at least once in your lifetime, but if you love it you are likely to want to experience all character types, choices and romances. It's a game that is always entertaining and enjoyable to come back to and play.
The game crashes ocassionally, mostly in Denerim and The Deep Roads and also when fighting the Archdemon it would crash every time after it does a spirit breath until I turned the graphics to low there doesn't seem to be any other way to stop this. Also taking screeenshots often causes the game to freeze and lock up my computer needing a PC restart.

Dragon age 1 is maybe the rpg i've enjoyed the most! (in top 10 with mass effect 1-3, Oblivion, Divinity 2, kotor 1-2 and fallout: new vegas). It has a lot of replay value. Every class and race has a unique story with unique events in the game, and you are likely to discover new things when you replay. If like rpgs and is a completist sort of gamer then this is 100% for you

Dragon Age Origins is one out of three western RPGs that I've played that deserves a '10' rating in my book (the other ones are Witcher 3 and Neverwinter Nights). I think it's the last great Bioware masterpiece that takes place in a fantasy setting.

Dragon Age Origins is one out of three western RPGs that I've played that deserves a '10' rating in my book (the other ones are Witcher 3 and Neverwinter Nights). I think it's the last great Bioware masterpiece that takes place in a fantasy setting.

This game is so interesting to me because it's a great example of how good game design and execution is more important than original ideas. You can describe the story of this game in one sentence: Every x number of years, hero warriors called Grey Wardens are called to push back an incoming enemy invasion of evil beings called Darkspawn. That's it. It's laughable how simple and rehashed this story is. But oh my God did Bioware absolutely NAIL about every other aspect of this game.

First off, the world-building was done so well. In addition to how generic the plot is, many aspects of this fantasy world are too. There are humans, elves, dwarves, sorcerers, etc... How many times have we seen this before? But damn all of the various locations are so memorable and wonderful to explore. I can't exactly articulate why this is so, but I think it has to do with how well designed and cohesive this high-fantasy world was designed. It feels like a real, living, breathing place. I played this game in 2018, about 9 years after it came out. However, I was very impressed with the graphics and I feel they hold up really well.

The biggest strength of this game (in addition to the combat) is the character development. I'd say the characters in this game are the best written characters in any western RPG I've played, and it's the reason why this game is so good despite the generic plot. My party throughout the game was myself (male rogue), Morrigan, Alistair, and Sten. We've seen the **** witch' archtype and taciturn giant before in games, but Morrigan and Sten were written and executed so well that they're the gold standard for these archtypes in my opinion. Alistair was more unique and fantastic because he is so goofy and clumsy, yet sensitive and insecure. I had an absolute ball getting to know and developing relationships with these characters.

I loved the combat system and found it to be so much fun. Keep in mind I'm biased because I love 'real-time with pause' type of games such as Baldur's Gate 2 and Pillars of Eternity, but I felt Dragon Age Origins was the best executed real-time with pause system out of all of them. I think this is because the game controls as well as any other real-time with pause game, but lets you zoom and in out of the combat so you can see characters close up in addition to an isometric angle. This makes it less boring than just seeing the isometric perspective that you get from a game like Baldur's Gate.

The controls were also top-notch, intuitive, and well done. The interface of the game is kind of similar to Neverwinter Nights and all of your special skills can be assigned to the F1-F9 keys. It's easy and simple to get your characters to do what you want them to do. And the relationship system in which you gain relationship points with your companions is easy to understand and streamlined so well.

No game is without its flaws. I honestly can't think of too many for Dragon Age Origins, but one pretty significant issue I had with the game is the difficulty. I played it on 'normal' difficulty but damn was the game hard, especially towards the beginning. This was partly due to me not figuring out how potions worked, but I almost was considering putting the game down towards the start because of the difficulty curve. Bandit parties and enemy spellcasters were slaughtering my party with regularity towards the start. And I'm somewhat of a veteran with real-time with pause games. If it was this tough for me, it might be near impossible for a new player to handle. I somehow made it through the start by taking a very slow and steady approach to the combat, but I think the difficulty was too harsh overall.

So with that all said, I'd fully stamp this game with the '10' rating as it really doesn't get much better than this when it comes to western RPGs!

*this review is me reflecting on playing this game back in the early 2000s) at the time it came out- it was a big deal for video games and probably the best RPG. This game embodied what it meant for your actions and decisions having consequences or effects on the game. Also one of the few games where you could have a player character who has so much agency you can choose to be in a same sex relationship. Full of fantasy and lore- although wordy at times, made the game feel like a real world. However now in 2020 the graphics and gameplay are a bit dated but it's still a good game.

    Takeaways
Pros: real RPG where your choices effect the game, great for micromanaging looters like me who want to pocket everything, your character can be in a relationship.
Cons: none for the time it came out, now though there are some newer RPGs to play. But there will be fourth game in this series coming out so if you may be interested in that- playing the past games really help you get the story vibe (or youtube summary vids)

Spent many hours in this game. Enjoyable. Gladly will come back one day to it, since a lot of new games are stupidly political. Very enjoyable story.

Uno de los mejores RPG, buen equilibrio entre diversión y dificultad, la mezcla perfecta entre Mass Effect y Baldurs Gate, uno de mis juegos favoritos, y el mejor de la saga de lejos

  1. If you're into rpgs, or rather if you love roleplaying in general, there's really no need to waste time reading any reviews of this game. The same goes if you regard games like Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2 and the Baldurs Gate-series among the best computer games ever made. Because this game is everything a person like you look for in a game, and so much more. Be aware though, Dragon Age: Origins is not a revolution of the genre, rather it is an evolution, where Bioware has refined everything that made them into a formula as close to perfection as possible. Without a doubt one of the strongest Game of the year-candidates so far this year and a game we will remember with warm feelings many years to come.

An outstanding story-driven RPG with fantastic writing, RPG depth and tough tactical combat. It's BioWare's best RPG since Baldur's Gate 2. [Holiday 2009, p.38]
  3. Dragon Age Origins will keep you in front of your computer for hours! Graphics, sounds and the controls couldn’t be much better!
