That is something to be commended. I really loved Doom 3, it was one of the best single player FPS experiences in many years, and was sad when it was over. So when I found out about it's DLC I had high hopes. Resurrection Of Evil was very well made. It feels like a continuation, and captures the atmosphere and gerneral Doom 3 style. But it keeps things fresh and new enough to be different. Some different monsters, a less puzzle and collection style of gameplay, and more linear a-to-b-to-b style gameplay. Boss battles are vastly different, and at times the game is less forgiving at providing ammo and health. Also some weapons are different and also there is new equipment, a gravity-gun style tool, and an "artefact" which let's you do some cool things. Great stuff.

It's not quite on par with Doom 3 though, there's less to explore. I felt a little less immersed in the world. There were far fewer jump-scares and psychedelic moments (tricking you into thinking you're about to die, Which happened often in Doom 3). However I can't really say I'm disappointed or I that expected such things in a DLC.

I feel the story and atmosphere which Doom 3 was all about, lacking, but having parts with time limits ,(air or toxic suite ticking down), makes you really appriciate the new "time stop" artifact, as it's what gets you through those moments of 10hp left and in deep dodo. But I'm hard pressed to figure out what exactly they were trying to do, other than prove that Nerve is apparently staffed by a bunch of 12-year olds. Instead of "scaring" me or building up a plot that got me interested in the game, I found myself actually laughing at stuff. Did anyone else just flat out laugh when they got to the room with the "glowing balls zipping back and forth"? And what's with Dr. Elizabeth McBoob? Who was the schizo retard that designed that character? It's like whoever was designing the character couldn't make up their mind about what they wanted. Ah well, puberty will do that to a game developer. I could go on and on, but suffice to say, this expansion pack just isn't very fun. Expand

HL2 is also overated but at least has some variation in scenery and doesn't spend all of its time being too dark. Most FPS type games are linear so it amuses me that so many people are hung up that. A good FPS makes you forget that it's linear by distracting you in other ways, things like old arcade style games or giving you a little room for exploration. Doom 3 simply did not do a good job of this. There is no place to explore and nothing to find. This game also could have benefited from a more interactive environment, silly little things like being able to shoot out lightbulbs or turn lights on and off via a wall switch. It's often the little things that make a game more fun. Most of the enemies you can kill easily with new weapons (was that suprising?), double-barrelled shotgun (enormous firepower at close distance) and grapper (kills small enemies by one shot and bigger with barrels or boxes). Once gamers, real gamers, always expected more. From a golden age, you expect nothing less than gold. So much gold, that even when you are given gold, you're not satisfied. This is exactly what happened with Resurrection of Evil, judging by Metacritic users' score. Now I will explain why, instead, RoE is not only a great expansion but it's even more than that if compared to the dark era of video games that we live today.

Gameplay remains purely Doom 3's one, but there are several additions. Starting from the double-barreled shotgun, or Super Shotgun, which finally returns after being absent in Doom 3 basic version. Using it is very satisfying, a real improvement over the bizarre normal Shotgun, not only in the accuracy but also in the two fire mouths that kill majority of enemies with a (2 in one) single shot or deal very massive damage to stronger ones. With only two shots in the barrels and a slower reload, it can leave the player vulnerable, but its hellish power counterbalances this single flaw. Normal shotgun is obliterated by Super Shotgun and I really don't understand how they didn't think to introduce it in the basic version of Doom 3. More lenient I can be on the Grabber, a reimagination of revolutionary Gravity Gun in Half-Life 2 (released after Doom 3, but before RoE). Being that its creation lays the foundations on a game released later, it was difficult to expect it in Doom 3's basic version. Nonetheless the Grabber is a nice weapon to use and works well. In fact, being many of Doom 3 (and also RoE) demons' attacks based on arched energy projectiles, the use of the Grabber is also more frequent than Gravity Gun in HL2, being useful to send back to enemies their own energy projectiles in the majority of battles, rather than to solve environmental puzzles like the Gravity Gun.

But new weapons also require to be test on new enemies. And new enemies have arrived. The "Vulgar" is a new type of demon – vaguely reminiscent of a Xenomorph – that replaces the normal Imp in most of RoE levels. More resistant and faster in the attack, it is a nice new demon and should never be underestimated at the highest skill levels. Curious about how Vulgar should have been the original Arch-vile, in Doom 3's early stage of development, but was later scrapped. Then there are "Forgotten Ones", an echo of the original Lost Souls' design in classic Doom games. While I actually like Lost Soul's design in the basic version (more the design than the behavior) there is to admit that Forgotten Ones should have been original Lost Souls in Doom 3, so even here I don't understand how they could exclude this so good design from the game. However, most powerful new demon in RoE is the "Bruiser". With a wacky and creepy appearance, at the same time, the Bruiser can be interpreted as a formidable fusion between an Hell Knight and a Mancubus. It hasn't as much health as the one or the other, but it still exceeds 800 HP. However, it is its attack to make it a fearsome opponent: in less than a second, in fact, it can quickly fire alternating fireballs (at least 4) from its two arms-mounted cannons. The damage is high and their rate of fire is significantly higher than Mancubus' one.

A great addition to RoE, which becomes the core of its gameplay, however, is the Artifact. Instrument similar to Doom 3's Soul Cube, it uses souls of non-demonized deceased humans to reload up to 3 uses. It grants three powers, each one obtained after defeating a boss: Helltime Hunter, which grants the power to slow down time, Berserk Hunter which adds the power to use weapons and fists with multiplied damage (berserk) and Invulnerability Hunter which adds the ability to not suffer damage while using the Artifact. All these powers are activated together, as they are obtained, and make the gameplay very fun, in a sense even more than what the Soul Cube did. Each one of the 3 bosses offers a good challenge, especially the last two. Final boss, the Maledict – Dr. Betruger, turned into a demon – is still a more challenging final boss than Doom 3 basic version's Cyberdemon.

RoE is a great expansion, which doesn't deserve all the criticism it received. An underrated work. I think even The Lost Mission (exclusive expansion published in BFG Edition) was too harshly criticized, and therefore I can only defend RoE. New weapons, new enemies, new powers, new plot, new levels. It was really a golden age if we could dare to complain about so much goodness, guys. Look at the painful world of today's video games. Low-cost DLCs put at full price, invasive and manipulative microtransactions that break gameplay, expansions that do not add anything but cut off pieces from the original game.

It's true, in the end: you really appreciate things, only when you don't have them anymore. Play and enjoy Resurrection of Evil and BFG Edition. You won't regret it.

Good expansion pack for a good game. If you've enjoyed the base game, you'll enjoy this as well. Pickens approves!

The expansion pack for the best DOOM game ever DOOM 3. Ever wonder what happened to the mad scientist at the end of DOOM 3? Well I guess you'll just have to play this magnificent expansion for the world's greatest DOOM game ever. And the new weapon "The Artifact" really comes in handy, trust me.

The only problem that I found on this game it's just being kind of short, but the levels are just too insane and fun.

A decent mission pack for DOOM 3. It introduces a few more monsters and weapons, but overall doesn't feel much different from the standard DOOM 3 game. But since DOOM 3 was a great game in its own right, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the end, this expansion is fine, but not particularly memorable. IMPORTANT: This mission pack is necessary to play the excellent Phobos mod.

Compared to Doom 3, this is more like old school Doom but also inferior to Doom 3 in many ways.
It's less scary, it has less secrets and a lot shorter. But thanks to the artifact you get early in the game there are a lot more monsters fighting you at the same time after the halfway mark and they are a lot tougher.
If you opt to not use the artifact you get an old school like feeling Doom

If you opt to not use the artifact you get an old school like feeling Doom game from 2005 in the last third of the game, and that works for me.

This game does not feel like Doom, it tries to be a horror game but it isn’t even remotely terrifying. Story is very boring and uninteresting, and they literally ripped off the HL2 gravity gun. Extremely disappointing game. I recommend not to play this game unless you have literally no other FPS games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great Add-On for a great game.

After the fantastic game that is Doom 3, I discovered the existence of this great DLC many years later.

The DLC, Resurrection of Evil is a nice add-on to the game. In this DLC your adventure continues with six new levels, some new enemy types like the Hunter and some new weapons.

In Resurrection of Evil, you play as an unknown marine that has been send on a mission to retrieve a very important artifact. You need to secure it before the invading aliens confiscate it. When found, you need to teleport the artifact (and hopefully yourself) back to Phobos Labs. Of course, this is not that easy.

You get the Artifact eventually, which lets you bend time so everything around you goes in slow motion while you walk around freely. You also get a gravity gun to push, pull and reflect stuff and the best of all: Your trusty double barred shotgun from Doom II.

It’s a nice addition and add some more fun playtime to the never ending nightmare of Doom 3.

  1. The game we were all hoping Doom 3 was going to be in the first place. It just took a few more months and the help of Nerve Software to get there. The difficulty is much higher now, but with the added power of the double-barrel shotgun and the innovative uses of the grabber, plus the insanely cool artifact gameplay balances out nicely.

While RoE provides much more interesting and tactically useful environments, it still doesn't quite offer the challenges we've become accustomed to with shooters like "Far Cry" and "Half-Life 2."
  3. It adds enough new weapons and enemies to make the expansion feel like a solid companion to the original. If Doom 3 left you wanting more, you'll find what you're looking for in Resurrection of Evil.
