    Don't know why I slept on it

    I'd never played this game before, despite being massively into stealth games; I don't know why I'd waited ten years to give it a go. Dishonored is a first person stealth (optional) game set in the city of Dunwall that's suffering from a terrible plague, which can be both a detriment and an advantage to the player. The gameplay is what you'd expect    Don't know why I slept on it

    Dishonored is a first person stealth (optional) game set in the city of Dunwall that's suffering from a terrible plague, which can be both a detriment and an advantage to the player.

    The gameplay is what you'd expect from a first person stealth game, shadows, rooftops, quiet assassinations and knock-outs and an array of gadgets to use. I think what sets the game apart a little is the special abilities you get quite early on, I think it's safe to say that the "Blink" ability is probably the most used, allowing you to traverse difficult obstacles with relative ease and set yourself up for completing your objectives.

    The characters in the game are a bit hit and miss, I personally was quite invested in Samuel, Slackjaw, Piero, Emily and Callista, the others who were giving me missions and what not, all seemed a bit one-dimensional and flat. I did what they asked of me but I can't say I massively cared about anything they had to say. Although it is definitely pretty neat seeing how the world and the characters react to your actions mission to mission.

    The best mechanic in this game, in my opinion, is how your actions affect the City of Dunwall, if you decide to go for knock-outs and an non-lethal eliminations of enemies and core targets, the City remains relatively clean. If you go for an all out blood-bath, the plague spreads like wildfire. And the best part is, the choice actually affects the gameplay. The next mission might have more rats/weepers or in contrast, a higher guard presence since they haven't been pushed out of the region. It's genuinely amazing and although the game isn't really "Open World" as it's more mission based, I was pleasantly surprised at how they pulled this off in a more linear game.

    I have a few minor criticisms of the game however, but nothing too bad, just knit-picking if anything depending on how you view it.
    One of the things that annoyed me the most was the "Detection" metre. Throughout my eight or so hours of playing it, I never quite understood how I would be detected with the little lightning bolts, if it's at three am I detected? When it breaks am I detected? Also I find it quite difficult to tell sometimes when you're being spotted and when you're not based on some of the guards behaviour. Not a massive critique but maybe I just missed something.

    Runes and Abilities. I played the game Non-lethal, (Since doing Non-lethal in MGS3: Snake Eater, this is just how I prefer to do things now) and I feel like you're... I don't want to say punished... But maybe put at a disadvantage for playing Non-lethal. Now most people might think that yeah, the trade off is that it's harder, however when it came to Runes and Skills, there's at least 4-5 Abilities that there is absolutely 0 point in taking if you're playing Non-Lethal. Some of them are just straight up. "You can KILL your target like this." I felt it might've been neater if you could have non-lethal versions of the abilities. Although I'm not going to be too harsh on this because I don't see how the "Devour" ability could be non-lethal, but I never got to utilise it and felt like I might've missed out, purely based on my preferred playstyle. By the third or fourth mission in, I had enough runes to do a solid Non-Lethal playthrough without needing to bother collecting anymore at all.

    Overall, I'm very glad I gave this game a try, my criticism is only for little things but the game itself was wonderful to play and I feel like I am a bit more invested in Corvo and the Dishonored universe now as a whole. The stealth was great, the NPC idle chat was interesting, the absolute multitude of options you have to complete your task is phenomenal. I'd recommend this game to anyone who enjoys stealth games who might've missed this since it's release a decade ago. For me it's a solid 7/10, the gameplay just overshadows the story and you won't regret investing the time in it.    … Expand

    Dishonored marks the rebirth of the immersive-sim genre of games. There's great freedom and variety in gameplay which allows you to approach any given level in your own way. The great level design along with your arsenal allowing you to play how you want, I'd say the gameplay of Dishonored is it's strong suit. The story is also interesting but I'd say it's lacking. Сюжет очень посредственный и простой - предательство на предательстве предательством погоняет - по сути нужен для галочки, чтобы у вас был повод поиграться. Дизайн уровней хороший, паркурить приятно.     Я хоть и не большой любитель стелс-экшена но вынужден признать что эта игра очень интересна и пожалуй обязательна к ознакомлению. Жаль что игра наказывает за слишком кровавое прохождение.

    The game is too overrated. The plot is not bad, the graphics are terrible, the gameplay is normal. I'm tired of playing after 5 hours of passing.

    Fun game but didn't age spectacularly. It's an interesting world and i think it sets up the world very well for the following titles. I didn't connect with Corvo, probably because he doesn't speak in the game, and I think it's a bit too short to really sink your teeth into.

    Почему же итоговая оценка проекта, исполняющего высший пилотаж по части визуальной эстетики и разнообразия предоставляемых геймплейных возможностей, столь низкая? Печально, но факт — в работе над Dishonored французская компания взяла на себя слишком много, не сумев реализовать все составляющие так, как было задумано. Чудные приспособления в стимпанк-стиле, гнетущая антиутопия и магия из тёмного фэнтези — настоящие таланты могут сложить в цельную картину даже такие, несовместимые на первый взгляд, вещи. Однако, в некоторых моментах можно "поймать" довольно красивые кадры

    *Недостатки*

    Стелс-система:
    Освещение и тени не играют абсолютно никакой роли — противники хорошо видят в темноте, а вероятность обнаружения зависит только от того, есть ли между вами достаточно высокое препятствие. Поэтому уже не удивляешься, обнаружив, что источники света нельзя уничтожать. Звук же, при всей своей детальности и проработанности, разносится недостаточно далеко — сойдясь в поединке с противником на первом этаже и звеня сталью, не удивляйтесь, если этажом выше не произойдет ровно никакого движения.

    Сюжет:
    Сюжетная линия в Dishonored довольно примитивная с очевидной развязкой и финалом, от которого ты не получаешь какого-либо удовольствия. Спустя 9-12 часов, когда по экрану поползут титры, с разочарованием думаешь: «И все? Неужели это конец?»

    *Итог*

    Dishonored отнюдь не идеальна и изобилует недоработками, но она стала настоящим глотком свежего воздуха для жанра. Ни в коем случае не стоит пропускать игру, предлагающую геймплейное разнообразие в новой вселенной, — особенно в эпоху коридорных шутеров и порядком заезженных сеттингов.    … Expand

This is commonly commented on, but I just reinstalled and replayed through the base game, no powers, alerts, kills, and only 2 KO's with a murder filled rampage through the DLC, what isn't commented upon often enough is how inexcusable the stealth mechanics are in this stealth game.

    Arkane et al. compared this game to the illustrious Thief series, but that simply goes to show how much better Thief did stealth. Firstly, Dishonored is based around black and whites, due to the nature of computers everything is quantized, however, the blatant artificiality of Dishonored's stealth mechanics destroys immersion and tension. The levels of guard's awareness are shoved in the players face, which can be useful, but gives everything a gamey feel, this is worsened by the lack of audio and lighting. Dishonored plays by line-of-site rules, the unsureness that gave the Thief trilogy (yes, all three) such gravitas is stripped away and replaced with quickly climbing or blinking to a nearby high structure, where the game follows in the Arkham series' footprints and makes the player essentially invisible. No stress, no fear, just immediate relaxation as the guard below waddles about before regurgitating one of a few canned lines. There doesn't feel like there are 3 levels of alertness, more so it feels like a segmented gauge regarding the time left until the full alert is commenced, distance slows this somewhat, but also disengages the player from the enemy, instead of my heart jumping to my throat I was annoyed that I either didn't see the enemy or that my estimation of their view distance was larger than expected. Adding to this disengagement are the cartoon characters populating Dunwall, not including Corvo at least, as he has no personality other than what is ascribed to him. This was done to increase game freedom or immersion, but as proven in the DLC and sequels, this was a mistake. Especially considering how emotional the plot tries to be, I found it impossible to care that boring man, coward man, and military man told me to kill some unrepentant villain because he's responsible for killing a character who has a minute of screentime and leaves little impression. Only Corvo cares and Corvo is nobody. The villains are shallow and often preposterously evil, Daud being something of an exception. Even the regular guards are a mix between callous and blank, so the killing of them is no different than Zombie Marines in Doom. The only exception is the great number of female guards in the Brigmore Witches DLC, as it doesn't feel good to hurt women, Arkane seeming to agree somewhat as their execution is much less brutal than the animation when killing men.

    The world of Dishonored feels too designed, there are many ways in and out of levels but they're all signposted and overpowering to any sense of exploration. The altitude stealth previously mentioned creates a separate and safe pathway for the majority of most levels, you walk along pipes on the ceiling and feel detached from the world. The direct targets of most levels meant in stealthy playthroughs I wouldn't want to risk exploration, which is borderline sinful for this sort of game and something I've never said about a previous stealth game as far as I remember, but there's no drive to explore except curiosity as important runes or charms are visible with the heart so felt more like digressions, with a certain outcome, and money never felt in too short of supply. I don't care about the characters and world aside from a few neat history facts because the setting is steampunk with a plague and some magic, most characters can be described in a single word, and considering "pervert Piero" is one of the first that comes to mind that isn't good.

    Few notes:
    Boyle estate is fun but feels a little small and short, which is a shame as it's probably the densest level that encourages exploration to find more out about the Boyle sisters, much better than finding Campbell's sex room.

    Golden Cat is empty and you only need to enter the back for non-lethal, which I remember physically disappointing me as it's a cool idea for a setting.

    Eel level in Brigmore is the best in game, Brigmore mansion is beautiful but the witches and dogs are frustrating

    Blink is fun but it feels like skipping content and creates the pipe walkway problem

    Dishonored is a fine action game, but selling it as Thief hurts it a lot, its stealth lacks feedback, just knock everone out quickly if you're low chaos    … Expand

    Отличные механики, которые позволяют при должном воображении делать просто феерические комбинации при столкновении с противниками, отличный визуальный стиль, проработанные локации, интересный лор, все это упирается в абсолютно ненужную систему морали, которая запрещает использовать арсенал и способности на полную.     Sobrevalorado juego que en algunas cosas recordaba un poco a Bioshock con unos toques (muy pocos) de Thief o Deus Ex; el apartado jugable es mas simple de lo que algunos parecen hacer creer, tampoco ofrece demasiada libertad de rutas y métodos para avanzar por los niveles ni mucha variedad de objetos con los que interactuar, otra gran pega es la bajísima dificultad (muy desequilibradoSobrevalorado juego que en algunas cosas recordaba un poco a Bioshock con unos toques (muy pocos) de Thief o Deus Ex; el apartado jugable es mas simple de lo que algunos parecen hacer creer, tampoco ofrece demasiada libertad de rutas y métodos para avanzar por los niveles ni mucha variedad de objetos con los que interactuar, otra gran pega es la bajísima dificultad (muy desequilibrado algunas habilidades) y lo previsible de los acontecimientos en la historia.     A big disappointment. Was really looking guards to this one, but it is a stealth game, and as such not very fun. There is not that much freedom that is pretty clearly the intended route. Should you choose to go the action route, mechanics will prove to be unsatisfactory. Plot was also predictable after the intrigue (which is spoiled in game descriptions and even the title)

    The story was really interesting with fresh and unpredictable twists in a world full with hatred and realistic grey shady morals. The grey color pallet of the world got really distinctive for dishonored and it felt really well realized.     The inventory and skill tree was really badly placed in the In-game menu which was tricky (time consuming and simply not convenient) to access at times and it also interrupted immersion with the momentum of the world/story. The HUD was simplistic and it gave just the right amount of information for the player, and it was easy to get used to and to utilize.
    The graphics where a bit shady at certain places but non the less smooth. While some textures looked amazing others faulted in the close up detail. But non the less the games graphics and animation's mostly hold up pretty good, and it did age rather well, compared to 2015's game graphics. (Or downgrades)
    The special visual effects where amazing and brutal some times with a lot of very well animated blood and gore. Lightnings where great to, but the smoke was just past gen. The voice acting was amazingly done, with real life actors who delivered on the lines, and the some times intense or emotional scenes too. The AI gets no credit, due to their painfully basic simplicity and routines. The only thing that changed with the difficulty is the damage the enemies do the the player and how fast and far they spot you. Bad AI design which sadly outlived it self. The level design was creative, and filled with side quests and organic activities, but sadly due to the over power performance of the 'Blink' ability everything was simplified and the player could just bypass every unwanted scenario.
    The game mechanics where well designed and very polished, but the before mentioned ability combined with the time slow let you play the 'Ghost' style without needing any other gadget in the player's inventory. Which made them useless. But if the player decides to play a different approach then some abilities and gadgets where a must. But now turning our focus the the core fault of the game and the biggest one at that: The player is presented with multiple approaches to different situations. All of them leading to more or less the same outcome, BUT not on the long term. This game was tagged: "Action Adventure, Modern, General, Modern". The action though well developed and polished was not really rewarded. In the end it comes down to a little mechanic called the chaos level, which measures the number of enemies killed and the chaos left after a mission. So after all you where not rewarded for playing in a more aggressive style but you where if you played stealth. This game would have earned higher if it would have been tagged stealth due to it's nature and reward/long term outcome ending.
    The environment was where the game really did it's best with it's organic discovery system, and implementing no map where it was not needed. The activities and NPC interactions was the real thing that this game had immersion.
    The collectibles where just there to ultimately help the player's upgrade certain tools at their disposal. And given the fact that there was no need to use them upgrades, the collectibles became unimportant and neglected them fast.
    Overall it was a good game, which could have been better if the plot would have been more original, and the characters better developed, and the game-play style would not punish certain play styles and reward others. Plus the simple fact that this was more of a stealth game that an action one. Originality is key in gaming with a pepper of creativity, both of which was lacking here and combined with other (before mentioned) flaws it holds back the game from it's true potential.    … Expand

    One of the better games in the stealth/action genre. It has excellent design philosophy and quality - on par with the standard set by half-life 2.

    Compared to Metro Last light, this has better gameplay mechanics, especially when stealth is considered. Its a very good port. It even resumes reliably from S3 sleep. The writing is above average. Although linear, levels are well designed with multiple routes to objectives. Voice acting is good, but american - I would have preferred europeans in this victorian industrial setting. The graphics are technically average, but artistically very nice. All the textures are based on watercolor art instead of photos - it looks lovely.

    This game is good, but some things prevent it from being great: The gameplay is solid, but we have seen it all before - it is very mainstream and not “realistic” - guards are as dumb as usual, and if I had to sneak past one, there was always a perfectly placed cover object etc, and I would roll my eyes. The game is also not very “large” - it was probably made on a modest budget by AAA standards. I also do not like the dark magic theme (though I do like the steampunk theme).

    Overall, this is a quality game I can easily recommend.    … Expand

    I find the game boring because it's entirely about stealth. I have a crossbow with bolts, but it never has any ammo. I have a gun, and the enemies drop bullets for the gun, but the gun is loud and triggers alarms so more guards show up. Grenades are awesome, but those too will trigger alarms. The razor traps are cool, but those are always in limited supply. Direct sword fighting is downright awful in this game, so that leaves everything up to stealth kills. You either sneak past everyone or you stab everyone from behind. Some people might find that interesting, but I get sick of it fairly quick.

    I think the most annoying problem is that batman vision is considered a spell. While games like Prey 2017, Batman, and Far Cry 3 allow the user to press V to see things, this game requires me to use the mouse wheel to select the spell and then right click to use the spell. Then I need to mouse wheel back to blink to set that as my spell. This happens every time the batman vision turns itself off, so it happens very often.    … Expand

    I really want to enjoy this game as many other people do, but i really cannot see why this game got rather high marks. It has very interesting mechanics and I really want to see the story unfolded. Unfortunately, I have not played pass the first 3 hours of the game yet and already felt like I have to push myself to play. The combat feels clunky and kind of scripted. The NPCs look lifelessI really want to enjoy this game as many other people do, but i really cannot see why this game got rather high marks. It has very interesting mechanics and I really want to see the story unfolded.     STORY
    Regarding the story, it's pretty generic. It exists, don't get me wrong, but it feels so boring that it's hard to find a reason to care. Part of it is because the voice acting wasn't great and sounded monotonous. I ultimately got bored of listening to the dialogue and mostly skipped the lengthy ones to focus on the game.

    GAMEPLAY
    This game is basically BioShock 2 with a stealth system. It uses the same dual-wield formula, with stealth gameplay similar to what you'd find in Metal Gear Solid or a simpler version of Hitman.

    The game is a bit lenient in how you can play. You're not punished for going guns blazing if you so desire, which is not really the way the developers intended for it to be played. It's not hard to kill everyone and rush through maps. Most of the abilities in the game were desired for stealth, so you don't often get a chance to use them if you're of the aggressive type.

    If you do opt to be more subtle with your kills, then it can be quite amusing due to the many means available at your arsenal to assassinate.

    BALANCE
    I strongly recommend playing above Normal. At Normal, the game is a walk in the park.

    There is a ability in the game that allows you to teleport and kill enemies instantly. There's also another ability that is basically a wall hack, and another one that lets you slow or stop time.

    You can max out these abilities and then you're set for the rest of the game because all the other abilities are primarily intended for stealth gameplay and are thus not necessary. This is a balance issue since the other abilities are only marginally better and not worth the time to scavenge for.

    At Normal, the enemy AI isn't that great and they can't hit the broad side of a barn with their pistols, which means you can easily escape during fights.

    The enemies in the game are all "human," which means that they don't have absurdly high amounts of health or use insanely powerful abilities the further you get into the game. I feel that this is a plus, since it keeps the game grounded in reality. You can assassinate key targets with ease as long as you play your cards right.

    EXPLORATION
    Maps are sufficiently large, but not open-world gigantic. They're kind of designed like Half-Life 2 maps,with that slight apocalyptic feel to it. You can hunt for special items to gain abilities and buffs, but you don't really need them to progress.

    Really early on, you're given a map-wide GPS that helps you locate those items, so there's pretty much no guesswork involved. The only difficulty lies in sometimes being unable to find the paths leading to them.

    The game has nine total missions, plus a central hub map. If played quickly, it should last around 10 hours of gameplay.

    "KNIFE OF DUNWALL"
    This DLC is really nice. I like the rebalancing that was put into this spin-off. The difficulty has ramped up and requires some strategic planning now. Enemies and maps don't feel like a chore to deal with. There are three missions lasting around three hours total, with a boss fight.

    Stores no longer exist within maps. Instead, they're available to you before you start a mission. There is a new feature introduced called "Favors", which are very generous bonuses you can buy at cheap prices to improve your next mission's gameplay.

    Mana use has been balanced out by making it harder to find potions to restore it. Burning your mana will actually put you at a handicap, making it difficult to play.

    Overall, this DLC has been a significant improvement over the main game. The conversations are concise and not filled with pointless dialogue which makes them worthwhile to listen to. I give this DLC a 8/10.

    "BRIGMORE WITCHES"
    In this sequel to the Knife of Dunwall, you're allowed to "load" your save game from the previous DLC. The game implies that you'll have a harder time if you load up a "bad reputation" save, but that's not actually true.

    Missions are longer this time. The game becomes quite challenging after halfway into the game, and now has more emphasis on sword fights. There are four missions total lasting about five hours, with a boss fight.

    It's even harder to find mana potions now and money is scarce. It's very easy to run out of mana and ammunition.

    I'll say this DLC is a 7/10. It doesn't really introduce anything new, and the story is okay.

    SUMMARY
    Dishonored incorporates many features from popular games, but lacks difficulty. Don't expect serious tactical gameplay because the game is simplified and favours the player. Maps are somewhat large, forcing you to sometimes travel long distances in order to complete objectives. I will give this game an overall 7/10 for having decent combat and map design. It is a good game, but somewhat easy and repetitive.    … Expand

    Level design, on the other hand is quite well done and it gives you enough methods to approach a mission, which makes the game very re-playable.
    The story is not anything special, but is well constructed and does it's job.
    Overall a game i would have enjoyed far more if the gameplay issues would make my run so frustrating, but i completely recommend it to someone who isn't going to try the "pacific run" as I did.    … Expand

    It was alright but nothing special in my opinion. I beat it in 8 hours which was a bit disappointing but its an alright game if you don't mind the occasional bug.

    I was very disappointed with this game. It has nice artistic design and very good audio but the gameplay becomes boring really quickly (for me it was 4 hours). You become so overpowered in chapter one that the enemies are no threat even on the highest difficulty but if you don't take the upgrades gameplay becomes even worse, because you limit your options. Overally huge disappointment for me :/

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was really good up until the end of the "Lady Boyle's Last Party" mission. The mission after that ("Return to the Tower") where you have to assassinate the Lord Regent was somewhat predictable, accept for the twist with the broadcast.

    From "The Flooded District" (the third last mission out of nine missions) the game degraded a lot in my opinion. I spent hours in the sewers and flooded district, wandering around levels that were so dark that I could not see where I was going, even with the gamma adjusted. The "enhanced eyes" spell did not help either. The story line also became very boring, and it seems pointless and tacked on at that point. That bit about you having to recover your weapons was completely unnecessary and a waste of time in my opinion.

    I think the first 6 missions were brilliant, and the game should have ended there. My prediction for Dishonored 2 is that it will be a lot like Deus Ex, where the first game was brilliant and the rest was just more of the same.    … Expand

When the two main focuses of the game both don't work as well as they should compared to other titles, there's little reason to play for any longer than a first playthrough.

    Dishonored has a very lack luster story. I could not care less about the empress and I could not care less about her daughter (whom of which seems to be a big focus in the game, yet is found in only the third mission), and the city, Dunwall, is too uninteresting for me to care about the inhabitants of the city. The architecture of Dunwall however is interesting, no surprise coming from the same art designer who did Half-Life 2, and you can definitely spot the similarities (overarching walls, hanging drop pods etc.) so there's no fault there, but unfortunately the games visuals don't give the art design justice. It's meant to look like a painting in motion, and with the character models and animations it does that quite well, but I can't help but feel like the world is ugly. Textures are really disappointing, and I can't tell if it's the whole painting design choice thing or the engine. Maybe we'll tell with Dishonored 2.

    I also find the characters lacking majorly, and is probably why I find the story so uninteresting. No one is really all that unique, and everyone seems very two dimensional. The outsider is meant to be a mysterious other-worldy being who tends to interfere in Corvo's world, yet I find him totally uninteresting, I don't know if that's due to the writing, voice-actor or what. Old creepy and probably equally as mysterious Granny Rags is more annoying than anything as she has about 6 lines she repeats over and over again for each time you meet her. It doesn't help that Corvo is a silent protagonist with only a few text-based dialogue options with the fully-voiced cast. It's just a completely forgettable story, and most of the in-game books aren't all that interesting to read and don't flesh out the story and world like they do in aforementioned Deus Ex and stealth series Thief. Corvo becomes an assassin after he is framed for the murder of high-empress Elizabeth, but I honestly can't remember who or why I'm killing the people I'm sent out to kill. I feel like I should be questioning them more than blatantly murdering them.

    The game is also linear. There's not that many ways to do an objective, and there aren't many things to do in each mission. There's one or two short side quests each mission but that's about it. Other-wise you're going through the mission with little variety in the way you complete objectives. There's always a few ways to get past a barrier or group of guards, but they're always the same. Find an obvious way up and above or just go around. It's not hidden, and you most likely won't be finding new ways of doing things each time you play the mission. Like-wise assassinations are boring. I don't feel like I accomplish anything when I kill them like I do in say, Hitman, because I don't know or care who the people are and there's very little character development, but moreso the issue is you either run in and stab them in slow-motion or there's an extremely obvious variation in for example, the third mission where you have to kill the Pendleton brothers, for one of them you go straight through and slit his throat or go through a door to the left and hold the use button to gas him. No skill, no thought and it doesn't give you anything to think about in way of morals or anything. It's just like mowing down thousands of enemies in most first person shooters.

    The game is ridiculously short, and it's disappointing that the original game plus the DLC is the entire length of Thief Deadly Shadows if you're playing on an easier difficulty. That is unacceptable, especially for a game that has surprisingly little replay value. The game is also very easy. Stealth is an absolute breeze, and murdering everyone is all too easy as the AI is very predictable even on the hardest difficulty, which I chose for a first playthrough. What was done pretty well however was the desire to not just kill everyone, and instead knock-out of avoid enemies instead. There will be less of the plague (rats) running around if you chose to save lives, and the empress' behavior will change. There is also a darker ending for if you chose to murder everyone, but that's about as far as it goes for any deviation in story. But this doesn't really make you feel for why you do what you do, it's only really just to see how the world changes around you in the minor way that it does.

    The sound design is fairly decent. The voice-acting I find is occasionally off in terms of line delivering, but it's mostly done well by guards and lead characters. The music is, and I hate to say this as this is someone's hard work and passion, but I find it pretty forgettable, but I'm going to go and say that it's most-likely because it's ambiance and wasn't trying to be recognized when compared to something like Unreal. Sound-design is pretty good and the sound cues for being detected is one of the things that help it stand out. Foot-step sounds are odd they as they don't exactly sync with music, and landing seems to be silent.

    Dishonored has an array of magical powers, given to you in a ?dream? by the Outsider. These can be upgraded and unlocked using Runes found around the missions and in the boring 100% forgettable hubworld. These include the incredibly over-powered short teleport Blink, slowing-down time, knocking people off their feet using a blast of wind, seeing through walls and a bunch of other nonsense. I hate this concept. It sounds like a magic version of augmentations from Deus Ex, but it's worse. Blink is a big reason as to why stealth is so easy and why the game is such a breeze. You can teleport anywhere, and the AI has trouble keeping up with it. All of the other stuff is completely unnecessary. You can do some cool stuff with it, as shown by a very skilled gamer on YouTube, but they actually ruin challenge. They're too overpowered. There's also very little variety in them, as there aren't many. You can also get upgrades, such as zooming in. These are pretty unimportant too though they're an alright side feature. Bone Charms too can be found around the levels and provide incredibly minor (pointless) bonuses, such as for example, one will make the enemies have a rare chance to miss. In gameplay, that has no effect, especially on harder difficulties where you will die fast, but not that it matters, because fire is easy to avoid anyway. They're an unnecessary addition, and you can only have three at a time, or I believe six if you upgrade.The weapon arsenal in essence is a dumbed-down, no-skill-needed version of Thief's arsenal. Here you have the crossbow dart (broadhead arrow), tranquilizer dart (gas arrow), incendiary dart (fire arrow) and proximity mine (mine). All it's missing is the water arrow and rope arrow from Thief, except it wouldn't need them anyway because stealth is nowhere near as complex as Thief's. In the two weapons it didn't blatantly steal from Thief, it makes up by having a short ranged 'pistol' which acts more like a shotgun, a grenade and a rewire tool. The latter not exactly counting as a weapon. These are all cool, and for good reason, but none of those are going to be helpful when you're doing a non-lethal playthrough are they? So instead you have a knife, the ability to choke and a tranq, which is what you will be doing the whole game. And if you're doing a stealth playthrough, many of the weapons will be pointless because they make too much noise.

    The reason for even just my 22 hour playtime that I have at the time of writing this is more because I never could get into the game, and I kept trying and trying. Actually playing it from beginning to finish is quite a bit shorter. Dishonored is a game I believe you should play once, but don't buy it for anymore than $25 with all DLC included. It's just not worth it. It's not a great game, and it's not really all that special. In terms of stealth, there are better things to play. In terms of melee and gadget style combat, there are better things to play. In terms of story, lore or graphics, there are better things to play. I will recommend it for a one time playthrough, but it's not worth the money, and that's why overall I'm not recommending it on Steam. Also, Bethesda you money-grabbing **** how dare you sell this pos with all DLC for a full-priced new release ($80) for a simple, lazy port on current gen consoles. Literally all they did was make it 1080p, it's still at 30 **** frames per second. Just to let people know, but I doubt PC gamers care. There's more to talk about, but this is easily my longest review, and it didn't need to be this long so this is where I'll end it.

Dishonored heavily resemble Half Life 2. In fact, I would with certainty assume that it runs on the same engine as HL2. This would be good thing if game was released 10 years ago, but today, it's severely degraded inI will start by saying that this game is heavily overrated. This would be good thing if game was released 10 years ago, but today, it's severely degraded in terms of visuals, and game mechanics. As result of this alone, this game should not be rated 10. To make things worse, Devs attempted to make the look of the game resemble something from Monet's painting, with blurry, paint-brush defined environment, but it was not done right, so the game looks more like low res game from 15yrs ago. In addition, most defining objects, including people are low-poly models which when combined with blurry textures make the game look even worse. Even if you invest hrs in searching for graphical config settings online, you will find out that results will be nearly the same as vanilla. For me, it is impossible to gain the sense of immersion, which I can get easily when playing HL2. Even today, ten years after its release. The s.c. stealth aspect is nearly not existing. Yes, your character can crouch and hide in the shadow, but the mechanism of detection is not as nearly good as what you find in the new versions of stealth games. On positive side, the game is very solid, and no crushes or issues with performance. The story line is interesting, and may be the only reason why you would want to try it. That is if you can overcome the horrible visuals and lack of depth of the first person interaction you so often experience in newer games. If this game had visuals, animations and mechanics, appropriate for new generation of games, I would give it 8.… Expand

    So I thought I’d write a review for Dishonored as an alternate opinion to all the 9’s and 10’s this game is getting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good game, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near a perfect game.
    The game has some shortcomings so even though I’m giving this a 7, I’ll focus on them.
    The antagonist, Corvo Attano, really has no personality. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good game, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near a perfect game.
    The game has some shortcomings so even though I’m giving this a 7, I’ll focus on them.

    The antagonist, Corvo Attano, really has no personality. He obviously has a history and a reputation that other characters react to, but he says nothing throughout the game giving us little clues as to what kind of person he is. I realize game developers do this in an attempt to make the player imprint themselves on to the antagonist, but many games add a voice and a personality to the lead character and it works well. In Far Cry 3, for instance where I felt more connected. In Saints Row 3 & 4 you can choose between 3 male and 3 female voices. I didn’t even go with my same gender and I felt connected to the personality of the lead character.

    The AI is also not very good. If you put a guy to sleep, or even kill someone they’ll often not be alarmed at all upon discovering them, or do a quick search and if they don’t find you within 30 seconds, they’ll just give up and go back to their usual patterns.

    For example, during one of the missions, I blinked into a room, took out the guard, the primary target was 5 feet away, but never heard me. I easily took out the primary target next, then I was slashed by a guard I hadn’t known was there. I slashed back, and he blinked away. I knew I couldn’t have killed him yet. But curiously, he never returned! (Maybe off to put some Polysporin on that superficial wound I gave him)

    The plot isn’t terribly exciting. The first batch of missions force the plot along in a very contrived way. However; the plot does pick up towards the end of the story.

    The setting is a plague infested, post industrial revolution London in a steampunk style and is quite beautiful in its own way. But it doesn’t seem like a living city like you’d find in GTA or Assassins Creed. There are very few innocent civilians wandering around. You’ll mostly just encounter guards and “weepers”. Weepers are plague infested civilians who basically walk and behave like zombies.

    The characters aren’t very deep. Cardboard cut-outs really, but they serve their purpose. They have a character called “The Outsider” that’s some sort of supernatural being that gives you powers for unknown reasons. I guess the developers wanted to add powers to your character and this is the MacGuffin they decided on. Still, the powers he gives you are cool. More on that later.

    The great thing about the game is that you can approach situations in many different ways. Possess an animal or human (if you level up) and walk past guards, fight your way through, or stealth you way through. You don’t have to kill a single person in the entire game. Or you can kill everything in sight. The game lets you know that if you kill too many people, however, you’ll get a “darker” ending.

    The game really just wants you to play as non-lethally as possible. I tried to play stealthily at first, but by the later missions I had more fun letting loose and killing guards. The game, unfortunately, punishes you for that and you get a darker ending. (even the friendly boatman that ferry’s you around scolds you near the end!) I had a problem with this, because despite what they say, you really are meant to play it the way the developers wanted you to - stealthily.

    So if you prefer the “shoot-em-up” style of games like I do, it’s not nearly as satisfying to mostly avoid contact.
    I’ve seen it written that if you play the game 3 times, you’ll be good enough to do the entire thing using non-lethal methods, but who has time to play the same game 3 times over when there are so many other great games out there?

    I’ve saved my biggest problem with the game for last: The gameplay. The game has some great ideas. The problem is the execution (no pun intended). Sometimes I felt like an assassin, by so often I felt like a klutz. The game definitely has a learning curve to it.
    The problem is you have so many tools; you’re constantly juggling between them. “Dark Vision” is great, but it times out. (Unlike “detective mode” in Batman Arkham Asylum/City or tagging enemies in Far Cry 3)
    So you sit and wait for your opportunity to blink, or take out a guard some way, dark vision runs out, I have to switch back to that, turn it back on, then switch back to blink or a weapon and by then, my opportunity may have passed. I can only do one thing at a time and juggling between things, especially if I want to do them quickly, felt clunky.
    Taking on a lot of enemies at once is a quick way to get yourself killed. Enemies will all rush at you if you’re detected.
    In Assassins Creed, it was a much more fluid transition between skills and I really felt like a super hero. Ditto for Batman and Far Cry 3. In those games, even when I failed, I had the confidence I could go back and do it better, but in Dishonored I never perfected my stealthiness.
    In Dishonored I found myself accidently blinking into a sword fight when I forgot that blink was enabled instead of dark vision. It’s amusing that everyone in the swordfight was surprised it was happening, including me!

    So overall, and in my humble opinion, it was a good game, but not a great game. 7/10    … Expand

    The only thing I was not to keen on was this "choice" you have over low or high chaos (stealth and not killing anyone or slaughtering everyone in your path). The game keeps on telling you to not kill people if you want the "good" ending, yet by doing so you miss out on some of the most fun powers and mechanics in the game. It's saying, here is an arsenal of cool stuff, but don't use them.

    Anyway, a great game in most respects that I would recommend to anyone interested in the genre.

    What is worse, you can see the story advances only in intermissions, not in missions. That makes the stealth-play extremely booooooring. Or you can slaughter everything on.     I really liked the gameplay and level design..............but the setting just got too "dark" for me. I am not easily offended, but I just hated how many gross corpses you found all over the place - after a while I just didn't like how I felt when I played the game.

    I did really appreciate the effort the producers made where you can play the game without killing anyone - that was really cool.

However, despite all its efforts, Dishonored feels somehwat lacking in one major area: completeness. By that I mean it's so linear and unvaried, it feels more like a demo. Why do I have this opinion? Perhaps it's because I rarely got to use any of the upgrades I bought or engage in combat. And although the game doesn't present you with lots of pointless choices and text walls and RPG elements that don't affect gameplay, the level design is certainly lacking in gameplay variety. Yes, each level is well-thought and detailed, but the actual gameplay is extremely repetitive. I played the game on Hard and it suffers from the same problem as Hitman Absolution - that it's too easy to be stealthy. The game rewards you for not killing anyone and being sneaky. For this reason (because of the achievements), it's tempting to be tactical in your approach. Although the game's mechanics and tools and AI accommodate for this, the excitement is definitely lacking. Furthermore, should you choose to engage in combat, there is no real fun to be had there either. With just a pistol (or bow) and a sword, it's very basic. Fast, granted, but not fun. The supernatural abilities are indeed a great feature of the game and don't feel out of place, however as with everything in this game, they're ultimately unrealised potential. Never in a level was I forced to think creatively or use the level and my abilities/weapons etc. to make a meaningful impact in any way. I'm not saying that the game should be open-world or an RPG, I just think that it's been heavily cut down in order to make it linear and easy to finish in a relatively short time. The developers went through so much trouble to build the game world and story, yet none of the characters felt well-developed at all. Granted, the story is good, but it could do with so much MORE. Same with the levels - good, but need MORE VARIETY. You spend so much time exploring the levels finding journals (lots and lots and lots of text which isn't really worth reading), collectibles and money, yet in the grand scheme of things they're absolutely useless. All those upgrades for nothing! And the choices? Well, they seem meaningful at the time but don't really impact the story overall.

    Bottom line: great foundations, unrealised potential. "Underdeveloped" is how I would sum it up. It'd be interesting to see how the next game turns out. Dishonored is a good game on its own but is a bit disappointing because it makes out to be so much more than it actually is.    … Expand

    I finally picked up this game at one of the Steam-sales, and while I had heard a lot of great things about the game, I had my doubts. Considering it's cheap price nowadays, its a bargain. The game is really good, especially if you take the price you pay for it at present day in consideration.     The main problem I had with the game was that the first ability you get (the teleport one) was also the ability I used for the majority of times troughout the game. You can possess animals (and later people) and summon rats, but I found myself only using the other abilities once or twice during my playthrough. I am not entirely blaming the game here, since I could have used the other abilities more, but they are'nt really required. The game also has a lack of side-quests in my opinion. The maps are quite big and there are many different paths you can take, but there only really is a main goal (or one side-goal, which usually is on the way towards your main one). These two things combined made me loose some of the interest in tackling the game in a different way, and left me just plowing through the last fourth of the game to finish up the story-element, not even caring about the runes or effiges, since I never really used them anyway. Sneaking by a guard by possessing a rat might be fun one time, but when you realize it's just way faster and safer to teleport past them, you end up rarely using anything else.

    Again, this is my personal experience with the game, other people may absolutely tinker with the other abilities and explore many other possibilities, but I couldn't really keep up enough interest to do that, which is a minus in my book.

    Other than that, it is a really solid game. The story is good, and the options in which you can tackle the missions is a fun feature, which adds some future replayability.    … Expand

I've deducted points because of very long books and notes you'll find in game, which most probably you won't read because of the lenght; and number of bugs. In addition to that, game becomes repetitive fairly quickly. If you have time to waste, I can recommend it.     Overall the game was fun and worth playing but my main problem with it is that it is too short. I beat the game in about 12 hours including my random, murderous rampages. DLC doesn't count there should have been more content in the original package.

The story is also very shallow, and I couldn't keep my interest invested in it. It's still got good gameplay mechanics. And I still enjoyed zapping from the shadows to knock someone out then zap back. But IThis game is definitely up there. But it's not for everyone.     OK action/stealth game. Way overrated by the critic reviews in my opinion. The game doesn't really bring anything new to the genre, the story is OK at best and the graphics are a bit so so at times.

The game does nothing to motivated you to care about any of the characters at all. The combat system is decent.     Also I love the graphics style, it's like a 3D oil painting.
    There's too little about the main protagonist all the information you get is his job and how he got, wait for it.... ~DISHONORED~. And usually it's no problem. but only when throughout playing the story you discover more and more, and here it feels like I'm a puppet in every mission.
    And being the puppet that you are, you can't do much else so you keep doing the same thing over and over again It's quite boring.

This points out any one of these collectibles in the area no matter your proximity. I'll bet the designers who had to hide those collectibles were pissed when the gadget designers added the heart...

    The story is average although there's a twist you'll see a mile and a half away. Character development in this story is minimum which I've come to expect from most triple A games. You'll know who the main baddie's going to be before the word dastardly can slip through your lips.

    Gameplay has the usual stealth/stab-em up gameplay, get behind an enemy stab them. Dishonored DOES try to mix this up but falls at the first hurdle and knocks out it's teeth as it add's powers.(gifted by a mysterious being known as "The Outsider" who stirs some intrigue but then doesn't amount to anything but a narration/exposition vessel) These powers seem to completely break the stealthy pacing there should be in stealth games as the first power you're given allows you to warp up behind any enemy and stab them. A lot of the upgrades seem to be fairly useless as well, the only ones you really need is the aforementioned "Blink" warp spell, and the "Possession" spell which is self explanatory really. It allows you to possess an animal and at level two a human.

    The level design is strange as it tries to trick you into thinking that the level is larger than it actually is by giving you multiple routes, which are the usual stealth game cliches of vents, front door, rooftops.

    The game also decides to throw in a morality system which will completely up the way you play, making you load up a save because you accidentally killed someone and that might make you get the bad ending. This in turn ruins the gameplay feel that I think Arkane were going for, the type of gameplay that can jump from stealth to combat in an instant, this is definitely the case with some of the items and upgrades such as spring razors and clockwork grenades, as well as the "Blend time" spell which allows you to slow down or entirely stop time at the cost of a lot of mana. This morality system is also thrown in with "Special actions" which aren't so special at all really as they don't seem to affect the outcome of the ending, a character will mention it to you once right after you've done it and it will never haunt you again.

    Finally, the pacing of the game is what really kills it for me, as like many games at the moment, it sends you back to a hub area at the end of each mission to buy upgrades and items, this felt completely unneeded as there is actually some stores in the mission areas that can't upgrade anything.(Blatantly so you'll have to wait to go back the hub) I feel this may be to drag out run-time as it clocks in at a rather short 10-12 hours (WITH most collectibles as I began to rush near the end as I was getting bored.)

    Dishonored gains a 6/10 for me as it can clearly be seen the devs were trying, and under the stress of a new IP they could have possibly been rushed a bit. I feel if a sequel is made all issues will be ironed out and the devs might even try to innovate instead of play it safe.    … Expand

Very tidios and repetitive and it seems you spend 75 percent of the game in dark vision (which was super tidios switching back and forth. Would've enjoyed the game so much more if it that was done differently. I ended up beating it but it seemed every level after a certain point felt likeso i played the game in the "hard mode" (forgot what its called) and went chaos path and was soso. Very tidios and repetitive and it seems you spend 75 percent of the game in dark vision (which was super tidios switching back and forth. Would've enjoyed the game so much more if it that was done differently. I ended up beating it but it seemed every level after a certain point felt like just another stupid twist and kept dragging on through the end.... my thoughts.… Expand

Though it sounds like the player has a lot of choices, the developers did a poor job combining them. The maps seems big and free to explore but when you start exploring them you will soon hit the unreachable wall even if you have powers like double jump or teleportation (blink). There are a few safes with "riddles" you need to solve to get them open, but the riddles are like 2+2=?, and you get the answer from 5 different sources on the map so its just for show. Are we too stupid to solve anything more interesting?

    Every effort for player exploring the map, in hope of finding treasure that no one else of his friends found or looking for secrets that may be well hidden in those maps with multiple paths, is completely destroyed once you gain the power Night Vision (Level 2). Now this isn't the only game with "Eagle vision" overpowered "magical" view, as we all probably know that. The bad thing about those powers is that it ruins every need of player thinking for himself and spying on enemies from cover and learning their movement in order to work out a tactic for bringing them down without getting spotted. However this isn't the only problem we can see here. The AI is almost totally blind and deaf, making the game excellent for children to play, but the veteran gamers will be left completely without a challenge. You can jump behind them they will not hear you. You can drop bottles and objects 2 meters beside them and they wont hear it. You can run 10m in front of them they will not see you. Leaning from 1m from a corner in front of them, still they cant see you... There are many more unrealistic situations like these. Having set difficulty on Very Hard this is unforgivable. Another thing is that Corvo goes on almost every mission in broad daylight. The enemies react as if it isn't day but some foggy dark night. Blowing candles is just for show as the ambient lights are like 10 times more powerful then the actual light candle is emitting. This proves the so called "stealth" is made "just to be there" and doesn't have any touch with real situations, breaking any immersion you thought it had, especially for first person view. Very annoying thing is that enemies sometimes respawn after reloading a save and happen to mysteriously die and you won't get achievement at the end of the map you cleared by choking everyone. That much for stealth mechanics.

    The combat itself isn't anything special. The developer Arkane Studios which made Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, the game with best and most realistic combat system i've seen, could have done much better job. If you liked this combat you probably didn't play Dark Messiah, so i suggest you try it out.

    You can use any power at your disposal to destroy an army of enemies, battle with your only sword you have during entire game and just bash left click or block on right click, some sword crossing that you always win and that's it. Yes that's right you don't get any new weapon from the beginning to the end. Gathering coins is a waste of time, since i had everything possible upgraded by the 50% of the game. In the end still had about 15000 unspent coins i didn't had what to use on.

    The story is ok and the lore is interesting to read, there's not much to tell there. Multiple choices across whole campaign and the effects they have on the ending is always welcome. Ambient sounds are very good, as are the details of the areas.

    All in all, the game is enjoyable enough to finish even if you are hardcore player like me who notices all these things badly done. Anyway don't take any review for granted, take the game and try it yourself.    … Expand

Dishonored has great level design with sprawling epic buildings and many ways to see tomato juice come out of you foes. You can jump around buildings or just run and stab them or place traps everywhere or.......there is a lot! The problem here is In a LINEAR game such as Absolution you still have endless ways to kill someone while being in the laws of physics. You would think with an open sand box you can just find awesome ways to stab things. Now with the Good Out here comes the bad aftertaste. THE NPC's are just bad............... They have no emotion like robots. I would get the same order Corvo go kill the man he is bad and we don't like him beep boop" its like if i tried to stab them there would be an electric shock. Stealth games i have seen have bad stories but come on just get some film writer and make a nice script. Absolution and Deus Ex HR had lovely stories but here its just wrong. The Ending without spoiling it is bad in both ways. Its either everything is good or everything is bad. It isnt 2000 we need to focus a lot on a game now because we progressed. Dishonored has the charm of the immersive and awesome city. Stealth= Awesome Upgrades= Sweet Everything Else= Shant. Luckily the awesome is in a lot more then the bad. So wait for a discount.     For being so plot-centric, Dishonored's story is disappointingly predictable and the ending boils down into two paths (high or low chaos). Dishonored is missing something thematically at it's core but I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps this is one of the few FPS games that would benefit from stylistic cutscenes instead of locked & zoomed camera interludes.

    Dishonored is a refreshingly creative stealth game with very stylized graphics that will stand the test of time (the same can't be said for the gameplay sadly). I think this is worth playing but it is disappointing to see what could have been if Arkane stuck to creating solely a strong stealth game.    … Expand

While playing the game, you are allowed to read many of the small notes and books that have been placed around the game world. These stories immerse you in the game world and make the world seem believable. On top of this, you can hide in the dark shadows and listen to the conversations of the characters in the world, each giving a small back story and even opening up more to the plot. Every level in the world has been carefully handcrafted to feel real and allow for the player to finish it however they please. The game however is marred by short length and repetitive game play. The game itself can be considered a cross between Bioshock (Plasmids) and Thief (The game world and sneaking) both extremely good games. Dishonored however, falters in its application of the game mechanics taken from these two. In Bioshock, you were given many different plasmids that could be upgraded to do multiple things. In Dishonored, an upgrade to one of your skills usually only results in it being "better," such as only teleporting farther or seeing more. Bioshock also had multiple weapons that could be picked up in the world, such as revolver, shotgun, machine gun etc. In Dishonored, you are limited to your sword and pistol, dulling the game. Along with this fault, Dishonored is not at all difficult or long. On my speed run going guns blazing, it only took me a few hours to see it through. In conclusion, the game is by no means bad. If you want the most out of your game, pick the game up on sale and play it through on the hardest difficulty, on a pacifist run, taking in as much of the game world as you possibly can. If the studio had more time to develop more levels and more game play mechanics, the game would be much higher rated for me.… Expand

    Really nice game, with a stunning amount of detail in it's world, but really, once you master Blink and Dark Sight the only challenge remaining is to find all the content in the highly detailed levels.

    A fun, lightweight game, with a hint of epicness, but not quite realised.

    I myself enjoyed this game, but I do have a few issues with it.
    For one, it's far too short. Can't really expand much on this. I'm the kind of guy who likes to find everything as well, but I still found this to be a far too short story.
    Secondly, some of the textures just don't look right. I love the hand-painted style of the textures in the game, but some of them just look muddy and bland, which detracts from the otherwise superb style.
    Finally, I don't think character development is done well enough for a game like this.
    However, fans of Deus Ex Human Revolution, Bioshock and the old Thief games should definitely give this a look.
    A final note is that this game is very well optimized, meaning it'll run even on a moderately weak PC splendid!    … Expand

Music and graphics are also very good, and you can see that a lot of work went into this game. In fact, while horrible messes like Mass Effect 3 are probably mistakes to blame on a corporate timetable imposed on the developers, the problems of Dishonored are mostly about the game mechanics themselves.
    The bad:
    The stealth is quite shallow, being built around skills that allow you to blink around and stop time. It is in fact a better game if you simply refrain from using such skills most of the time, but you will come across some section which will force you to do that. Going for a killing spree is just plain boring, and I wouldn't recommend that, in the same way I wouldn't recommend it in Deus Ex HR.
    The game also has pretty much no replay value. Maybe I'll pick it up again in some months, and then forget it forever.    … Expand

It was nice to play a game where the storyline wasn't typical, and with the magical powers aspect of the game, it made it feel like your character, Corvo, was special compared to those around him. I found much of the game, despite its cartoon style similar to Borderlands, very eery and creepy too. The sound effects often scared the hell out of me and made me quickly check over my shoulder, and the constant solo experience makes you play the game with full attention at all times. Lastly, the ending was very nice, and I particularly liked the style of it (although I won't go into any detail for obvious spoiler reasons).

    Now for the negatives...

    The game was very linear. Although it had many collectibles such as runes, bone charms, ammo and paintings, it was a very small world. I often found that searching for collectibles was too easy with the beating heart utility you're given which tells you where all runes and bone charms are. It was also very obvious which paths you were supposed to take to reach your destination, and although you were given a choice between going through sewers, fighting off each enemy or using the rooftops, the level of choice didn't seem overly great. Dishonored was also a very short game considering the price I paid for it. There's no real replay-ability with this game, and without multiplayer too. I felt like the game should have been £15 instead of £25+ at the time for what it's worth. One thing to note however is that I rushed this game, not collecting all the items that I could of, and pretty much just running into combat rather than stealth every time. The last negative was the auto-save feature. I have read online about this and many people agree. The auto-save wasn't the best, and you often found that when you reloaded a checkpoint after dying your were put back to a spot you were on about 10 minutes ago, and it took ages for you to get back to where you actually died. You have to manually save your game after every situation you go through in order to avoid this.

    Overall a great game, just needs a lot of tweaking if they make a sequel.    … Expand

    I ve played for couple of hours then i stoppped.
    Dont know why video games magazine (french) said it was the game of the decade.
    Its not in my point of view.
    If you dont have any other game to play with, u wil have pleasure but not as some bestsellers (Fallout 3, Skyrim,Bioshock Infinite)

Also, the dark sight skill is pretty much a necessity as it gives you the second best utility out of all, outshined only by the blink. Unless you go for the no magic achievement, in which case good luck to you... It is not a bad game by any means, it just lacks freedom margin there's usually more than one way to reach your objective unnoticed, but the only effective ones involve blink and high ledges. There's more than one way to kill a bunch of enemies, but, again, the effective ones are based on time stop and explosives. And, maybe, the occasional time stop and possession, if you are eager to waste mana. That's the entire game process there's the one boring but effective way of doing things and then there are a number of exciting but time consuming ways prone to failure. Choke him carry him drop him. Repeat N times, where N is the number of patrolmen. Or you can quicksave and try to do stage a mass casualty with rats, razorwire traps, grenades, et cetera. And actually pull it off on your third or fourth quickload. Oh, and Callista takes baths fully clothed...… Expand

The game has a heavy focus on stealth which just didn't quite play out as the developers said it would. There is very little stealth elements that actually work. The AI become too aware too easily both in daylight and night.

Completionists will find there is plenty to do with collecting coins and treasure, but therein lies another flaw. The game drives you forward, often leaving you uncertain as to whether you can or will return to an area where side quests and goodies lie in wait. There is an emphasis on being merciful rather than lethal but this is contradicted by the plethora of deadly weapons and gadgets available to you, if you favour not killing everything then you will only have two weapons (well one of them is a 'move') at your disposal during the entire game. The spell powers you get are again well designed and implemented however, again, most are geared towards killing, not subduing. Overall the desire to push on is strong, and all flaws aside Dishonored creates a thoroughly absorbing and memorable new universe in which to lose yourself. The context of this review is that I finished the game once quite soon after release, immediately deleted it from my hard drive, and then attempted to give it a second go from scratch this week.

    Out-dated graphics
    A misleading sense of free-will
    Little replay value With respect to the stylised intention of the game, the graphics are terribly outdated. While the visual style is imaginative and alternately colourful and cold where necessary, at its core it looks like I'm playing TF2 the textures are flat and lacking true detail, and the environments are often low-res. As stated, I understand that the intention is to create a more stylised, hand-drawn-style look, but you can do that and include detail at the same time. On a similar note, the character animations are ass the rigid and programmed nature of the facial and body movements take me out of the world and leave me feeling like I'm watching a game made before mo-cap existed.

    The game gives you a choice of play-style and then punishes you for doing anything other than stealth ease of progression, achievements, and a positive conclusion to the story all hinge on you taking a stealthy tact. Corvo is fast, deft with a sword, and, for the most part, outfitted for combat you're given grenades, a pistol, and the ability to perform sweet counter-attacks and surprise assaults. HOWEVER, if you choose to utilise these weapons you're forced to deal with attacks from many enemies, a 'negative' outcome at the end of the story, and less achievements. I understand that there are real-world repercussions for being so brazen, but why give me the choice if you're going structure the game in such a way that the only real reward comes from one way of playing?

    Finally, and in my mind, most heinously, is the fact that you can't replay earlier missions with the powers you've unlocked later you're forever stuck with the powers you had the first time you played the level, and are effectively, always handicapped. By the end of the game, Corvo is a super-soldier, and I don't see how you can overlook the fact that the single greatest part of RPG-style character building is reaching a point where you can cut through the enemies like warm butter. To allow me to craft my own super-soldier, to become familiar and efficient with him, and then shackle me to a certain diminishing skill level as I replay old missions just feels like a you'.

    There are positive elements, to be sure a beautifully realised world, intelligent enemies, exciting combat, and lovely sound design among others, but I feel that I can't rate it any higher than 6 because it accurately reflects my disappointment at the fundamental boundaries that the designers have imposed on the player.    … Expand

I probably wanted it to be like Thief more than I should have, and although there are many similarities to Thief, the game-play just doesn't live up to it.     By the time I'd finished the game, trying to keep the death-count as low as possible, I felt like I'd missed out on taking a more savage approach to the missions. So I replayed the whole game, and tried to kill as many of the bad-guys as possible (and even a few innocents along the way), and it was like a different game. I'm all for choice within game, and a flexibility to how missions can be approached, but I think the game would have been slightly improved by, once in a while, forcing you to take either a stealthy approach or a guns-blazing approach (similar to the Thief games). This would have meant that someone like me, who's default approach would always be stealth, would have had the chance to let-loose once in a while. I know that choice was always there, and I could have done exactly that at any point, but I didn't really believe that the bad-guys really deserved to die. They were just following whomever was in command, after all. My immersion in the game's narrative was actually preventing me from having a bit of fun. Maybe if some of the levels contained baddies who really deserved getting blown-up or an arrow to the head I would have had more chance to use more of my weaponry on my first play-though. There were times when a stealthy approach was the best way to avoid being killed, so these situations forced you to use more softly-softly tactics, but there was no point when a more action-packed method was essential. Sometimes, too much choice is a bad thing.
    Once I did decided to replay the game and in a more gung-ho fashion, I noticed how much EASIER the game had become. I could breeze through some of the levels in a fraction of the time I did when I was trying not to kill anyone, and I started to understand the criticism of those who took this approach on their first play-though and felt short-changed.
    Also, I appreciate the fact that the developers spent a lot of time to make sure each platform was given individual focus, but it still felt as if the PC version retained too many aspects of the console version. The ability to turn off most of the HUD elements, for example, is proof of this, but it took so long for me to figure-out which I needed and which I didn't that it probably spoiled the opening chapter. This is a probably a separate discussion, but you've got to ask yourself why do developers need to add so many HUD elements to make the game easier? If you can turn them off, and are still be able to play the game, then why have them in the first place? If the game needs them then why not just find other ways to offer clues to the player? Glowing objects, a compass and a map with objective indicators are usually more than enough, and have been a staple of FPS games since the Doom-era, so why introduce more clutter on the screen and destroy the immersion? Is it because they think console gamers are generally stupid, or perhaps it's because they're catering to gamers who are too young to play the game, but who they know inevitably will? This seems a far more reasonable explanation, and it's a real shame that a game's rating (18 in this case) shouldn't also reflect the intellect of the age-range it's aimed at. There's no evidence (despite what some may believe) that PC gamers over the age of 18 are any more intelligent than console gamers over the age of 18, so introducing ways to make the game easier, beyond the usual difficulty levels; which generally affect combat rather than game-play; can only be catering to younger players. And that is just WRONG. Anyway, I digress.
    Despite all this, Dishonored was like a breath of fresh-air, and I hope it gives more developers the courage to try something different with the common FPS. And I eagerly look forward to the inevitable sequel. Instead of filling the Thief-void, though, it just made me want Thief 4 to come sooner!    … Expand

    Dishonored in a unique stealth game that has very good parts to it but I never got sucked into the game. The use of your various powers makes the game unique to each player as there are many different ways to complete a mission. I have to admit that I did not a much attention to the storyline as I wanted to get to the action as quick as possible. If you were a fan of the thief games then I would give this one a shot.     I bought this game in a sale, and I'm glad... Full price is too much for this very linear restricted game. It's well build, music is great but it lacks. It's sometimes a bit boring, story is shallow. So only buy at a sale, it's overpriced.

    this game its great if you like those stealth games.

    i like stealth games like AC3 and those but in this case they made the game really close.

    i mean with close that you need to do the quest or nothing will happen.

I am not entirely happy with the graphic compartment, which has good level design but it seems a little dated in quality terms; especially the dark vision is incredibly dull, with those boring plain color items and enemies. The one thing I hated most were the characters; the protagonist is silent, lacking the personality of some Garrett or Azio Auditore; the NPCs are simply unpleasant to interact with and don't add much to the gameplay, I can't really connect or care about any one of them, even princess Emily, because the game doesn't allow you any real chances for conversation. I dislike especially their design, with deformed heads and huge hands they seem like caricatures more than regular human characters. The steampunk setting in general is interesting and... weird... though not as involving as my experience with Thief (sorry I keep bringing it up but it's clearly the older brother of this game, with sneanking around, loot and all!). Unfortunately the story itself hasn't much to offer, I could tell all the plot "twists", predictable as they are, hours before they actually happened.
    Oddly enough, the game gives you a homicidal arsenal to play with but rewards you more for a non-lethal approach, which doesn't make much sense to me. In Thief you were a thief, not a killer, so it made sense the game rewarded you for NOT killing people, but in Dishonored you ARE an assassin, so why make the player feel punished for killing enemies? It's what the game is about!
    Overrall, the game builds up a lot of tension and sadness in the player, with the plagued city, the rats and the sick people everywhere; it does it so well, I actually felt anguished in real life after playing Dishonored for several hours. Unless you decide to take out your weapons and crack some heads, you don't have much chance to let that tension out. I missed, in fact, some moments of adrenaline rush, when the stealth approach is off and you have to punch your way through enemy lines with brute force. I also missed a few simple things here and there, such as maps of the city in your inventory to get around, and highlights on the rat tunnels which are hard to spot.
    Dishonored is a nice game, but it could have turned out much better. It has good mechanics but not so well implemented, and sorely lacks bright moments, character interaction, surprises and in general, a deeper player involvement. I hope in a sequel to give it a higher rating, it's a 7- in this review.    … Expand

    The Good:
    The voice acting is quite superb. The game creators got very good cast together to deliver some very good dialogue.

    The overall feel of the in-game universe comes across quite well, especially during the first few missions. I recall that Viktor Antonov, one of the guys who designed the art behind of Half Life 2, designed the overall feel of Dishonored, and this feeling is pervasive through the game. The tone and mood of the environment come across very starkly to the player, and this adds to the immersion of the game, and contributes to feeling like you're actually in a real dystopian steam-punk world, not unlike Half-Life 2.

    The Bad:
    The gameplay is weak. This was a difficult observation to make based on the great overall feel of the universe. This game manages to combine a masterful universe with mediocre gameplay, and gameplay that belies the mastery of the in-game universe. This contrast is quite jarring at times.

    The control system was clearly no optimized for PC play. The game is nothing like Batman: Arkham City, where clear effort and time went into a PC input scheme to optimize the play for the PC players. With the plethora of powers and abilities that the character has access to, it would stand to reason that some powers could be directly mappable to the keyboard. This is not the case: the character may only use one power at a time (and this includes some of the less-active powers, such as dark vision and blink, and have the sword out all the time. This becomes awkward in certain non-aggressive missions when having your weapons out is quite silly, and could have been solved with a better keyboard mapping system, and a little bit of time spent optimizing the controls for PC play.

    The plot is terrible. I won't give any spoilers, but if you have half a brain you should figure out exactly what is going to happen by the end of the first mission set. This game fails to surprise, but that alone does not condemn the plot. It failed to be unsurprising in a passably interesting manner.

    The game feels incomplete, and there is not enough game, especially for a $60 big-production title. This is to say, it's way to damn short, and it moves far too quickly. I have the distinct feeling that this game was intended to be about twice or three times as long, and then got pushed out to sell the title more quickly.

    For an example of this incompleteness. The first mission is amazing. Several side missions, tons of content, many paths to victory, later on this is simply not the case. The mission maps become increasingly linear, boring, and lack the side content of the first few missions.

    Overall:

    Play it when its $20-30 or wait for something better. This game surfers from a serious lack of game time, and a rushed plot. 9 missions is simply not enough. With so many ways to play this game it could have been much longer without getting boring since there is always more than three ways to accomplish the mission objectives. The controls are frustrating, and combat is utterly trivial. This game survives a failing rating due to its excellent "feel," but suffers critically from a lack of in-game substance, insufficient storyline, control issues, and mediocre game-play at best. This game has potential, but we'll never know unless they release a SDK or something where players can add mod content, but I wouldn't hold out for that.    … Expand

I found this game experience to be a lot like LA Noire, where at first I was impressed and then half way through found everything to be redundant (gameplay and mission wise). I like the setting, characters, and some gameplay aspects of this title. On the downside, it was incredibly predictable. It doesn't help that the characters look about as evil as the men that they were asking you to assassinate. Graphics were not jaw dropping but not too different from the quality of a lot of other Unreal engine games. If I had to sum it all up, I would say it is a mixed between Hitman and Assassin's Creed (Makes sense since it is the same genre), but in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion experience of first person view. Then minus some points for predictability, and redundant gamplay and mission experience.… Expand

    What can i say? It felt short and easy. AI is a bit dumb, and blink makes everything too easy. Dishonored is fun. Good level design though. But i can't say it's a game worth 60$.
    It's worth the try though, it isn't a bad game, but it's simply mediocre. Could have been more

    If you have a high end gaming pc and want a high end experience do not get this game. The water color textures are terrible. Just to get this game to look good takes build prop edits and a course in Nvidia Inspector. But other than the terrible visuals the game play by itself is really fun and the sound is awesome. I got 10hrs into the game before I uninstalled it.

Even with the RUSHED ending, so so characters, the lack of tangled character twists, Dishonored is still worth checking out for the graphical experience. While the game play is not very involved, Dishonored still lets you (but never forces) create your own ways to go about infiltrating monstrous environments that are crawling with foes. Always fun, even if you can't help but think how other titles did it better than Dishonored. Pick it up at a budget price (19.99) but, please, don't listen to the hype on this one.… Expand

I like the setting, which is trying to give you the steam punk vibe but not always succeeds, and sometimes it's more post apocalyptic, yes the general "lore" is definitely nice and interesting, like the weepers. I say this is a nice game, but nowhere near the best of the year or the best assassination one. In short, good fun for the first playthrough, but definitely overrated.… Expand

    To all the people saying the stealth combat is limited and boring... that is the way you chose to play the game, i would not however pay 60 dollars on it... the steam price is much reasonable compared to the console price... I played through the whole game without killing anyone and found the game to be quite challenging.     The game is ok and the mix of action, stealth but other games previous to this have done action and stealth a hell of a lot better. The storyline is good but not immersive enough (again previous games have had much better storylines). I am rubbish at games so I can definitely say the game is far to easy (the AI is terrible). The graphics for a 2012 game are nothing special, no part in the game did I think wow that looks amazing.

    Maybe because of the reviews it has got my expectations were to high. I think Dishonoured tries to be a mix of Thief: Deadly Shadows, BioShock's, Half Life's and Deus Ex's but it is not even close to being as good as any of these imho.

    Summary of Dishonoured: an ok game worth playing if you can buy it cheap but overhyped and overrated.    … Expand

    Casts you into a world full of ugly yet beautiful chaos. Combat is engaging and fun. Graphics are spot on, the hands are amazing. Seriously, the hands are so well done. The lack of diversity is what sort of turned me off though. I found myself blinking to a roof top and falling onto my opponent for a stealth kill. If no one was around I would choke them.     We can draw comparisons with other titles all day, but everything is based on something. Dishonored remains a unique gem in a beautiful, yet chaotic world, with flawless gameplay. [December 2012]

    Dishonored rarely challenges the players, but it doesn't take them for fools, either, so that's an achievement compared to other games in the genre. Just don't expect strokes of genius like the Shalebridge Cradle level from Thief: Deadly Shadows.
