"The" best lovecraft style pure rpg DND/COC like game in industry.
All the pros you can find from a hardcore rpg, great story, meaningful choice, immersive environment, etc are in the game.
But also all the cons which are a lot casual gamer hated, complicated mechanic, long dialog, slow pace and so on.
SO it is a very dedicated targeting game for certain gamer, and they will definitely love it,like us.

If you could get just one game throughout this whole year, it should be Disco Elysium (yup, I believe it could be considered over The Last of Us: Part II or Cyberpunk 2077).

I'll spare you too many words in this review, as there are so many of them in the game. Read those instead, they are written soooooo brilliantly. Long story short: it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played...

The voice-acting is amazing. every feeling, every thought is voiced and has its own personality. it's amazingly done. the music accompanies you with beautiful and haunting melodies throughout and it is etched in my mind alongside some of the voices I heard during my playthrough.

This game stirred some questions and reflections in me like no other. I absolutely love this game and think it's one of the best RP games to have been made.

    Highly recommend it.

When I played it game I felt as if Planescape : Torment was resurected in late 2010s ... excellent feeling; too bad that there are no more games like that around there in the world. It gives a lot of intellectually interesting choices, while having original setting and kind of mysterious promise to the player that wants to immerse in that title. A must play !

If you start playing Disco Elysium, then, first of all, what you will feel will be incredibly exciting thanks to the dialogues and great voice acting, and the rich visual design will add, and the style will add its exoticism. But the more you play, the more you will feel attached to the main character and his partner, as well as to the rest of the characters. And the most important thing is that you will feel this similarity with your character in almost everything. The story is created so that you create your character literally from scratch, complementing his human qualities in parts, and the more you do this, the more you create yourself, especially during the first passage of the game. It's just great!

But, as in any game, Disco Elysium has its drawbacks. For people who find it difficult to perceive such a large amount of text, and the game consists of text and voice acting, it will be very difficult for such people to play and have to pause, and a very measured and slow gameplay is not suitable for everyone. In addition, despite the apparent variability and the RPG prefix, you can lose this fine line by playing similar games of this genre. You always have preferences, and even if you want to play the game honestly, sooner or later you will use the game download at the right moments, because the dice are not always on your side, and you always want to know what will happen next.

But if you are ready to put up with the listed problems, then this is exactly what you need!

No matter where you go or who you talk to in Revachol, whether it be the fishing village, the harbor, or the whirl-in-rags, you can feel the tension and the toll the revolution has taken. The pacing is also amazing; despite the game taking place on a relatively small map, new sections or characters are introduced at just the right times. I also loved how the dialogue checks were based on probability, so no matter what you decided to put your skill points in to you always had a chance of succeeding. Overall, this is a very special game and I will be replaying it multiple times over the course of my lifetime. Expand

I bought this while it was on sale and would say the current full price is a bit of a stretch (35£). Get it for 20£ or less and you should not be disappointed. I finished the game in 23 hours. You can make it last a bit longer but I think I saved the replay value by not focusing too much on finishing every single side quest (or so I hope).

You can make it last a bit longer but I think I saved the replay value by not focusing too much on finishing every single side quest (or so I hope).

The game is, as a digital RPG game, original as it has no combat. You work your way through the story based on your character's skills and the roll of the dice. A first play through gives you the feeling that by starting off with entirely different stats the next time you'll be able to see the story in an entirely different light.

The story telling is good and a lot of work has gone into it. Although at times it will feel as some conversations are stretched out a bit too much. A bit more adventure like personal thinking would be welcome as you might feel like you end up going on a guided tour where you just click through endless conversations. Still the story and character building is what you should play this for.

The "Open World" part will feel as a bit of stretch. Also don't have expectations for the graphics. It works for the game but the same game could've been made more than 10 years ago as the engine is fairly mediocre. Sound is a bit odd, I'm not sure that having characters switch from voice acting to text only is that much better than not having voice actors at all.

If they take the same idea and make it more open ended and make it significantly bigger it would probably have no competition and even if it would exist in a niche it would have to be played by any adult gamer. Now it has not a lot of direct competitors but it is also not necessarily a must-play game.

The core gameplay of developing and interacting with your own sides of personality is very interesting and gets better as you progress through the game.
On the other hand, the dialogs are often way too heavy: especially in the beginning you are bombarded with lore and super long conversations with NPC's ... at least the more you play and get involved with the story, the better this become.

    pros:
    - great narrative, will keep you interested once things get started
    - amazing art style and User Interface
    - Character customization & development through your mind/body traits is super cool

    cons:
    - dialogs can be a bit overwhelming: there's way too much lore and walls of text. They could have cut down a bit on this and kept the game more dynamic.
    - settings are very dark/negative: you play as a drunk detective with amnesic problems. There's some much potential to create a similar game but with a more interesting setting.
    - I personally found the music pretty bad.

There's also the mechanic where you can talk your skills themselves, but that's a whole other beast. The way they read depends on the skill. You might be stuck with a communist revolutionary or a vain celebrity as your little brain buddy. If you're unlucky you'll constantly get interrupted by a massive racist. The detective segments are my favourite bits though, working with your partner and your bickering skills to deduce what the hell happened. Most characters are categorized by their "ideology", and said ideologies lack any nuance. You're either a hardcore bolshevik, a brick-headed fascist, soulless capitalist, or something along these lines. This aspect of the game can easily break immersion and reminds you that you're not solving a real crime. People are never so simple.

It's also worth mentioning that, sometimes, the game can be a little too crazy or assign insane difficulty to very easy tasks. In many cases, also, you're not allowed to do the most obvious thing. Instead, you're being sent on a wild goose chase.

This being said, the game endears you to itself with its art style from the first moment. Its (rare!) voice acting is great, graphics are enthralling, and even such tiny things as pictures used for stats, are generally mesmerizing. Writing is stellar, despite some ham-fisted approach to ideology. But most importantly, your game really depends on who your character is. To the point I've never seen in any game before.

Character creation in Disco Elysium is unique. You don't play a warrior or a rogue; you're a cop and a cop is his mind, his charm, his physique and his motorics. All these aspects decide whether you can tell if someone is lying to you, how you respond under pressure, whether you understand what it is being a cop, or how much you can rely on your gut feelings. If you're a guy who can spot a lot, you're most likely not very good at reading intentions, even though you may notice blood-shot eyes. But it's not as simple as that. If your perception is too good, you may focus on a childhood scar of your interlocutor, completely forgetting about your case for two days. Middle road gets you nowhere but when you specialize, you may easily lose yourself. Not to mention that if you're not composed enough, swaying hips of a gal can be more than enough to make it impossible for you to think straight.

What hooked me into this game is that character choices do matter. There's plenty of moments when you can perform a perfect investigation and end up with completely bogus results because you weren't able to recognize some cultural motif and your empathy towards a child led you astray. In other cases, you need to get something done and agree to a rotten compromise, just to learn that there were other ways of accomplishing things. Most tasks are interesting, the main story has its twists, and there are also quite a few things intentionally designed to waste your time.

The game deserves stellar note of 9/10. Alas, it's not perfect mechanics-wise. I could use "always run" mode, it would be nice to manage your equipment, fewer loading screens would be welcome, proper multicore optimization is a must in 2019 and so on. These are all rather minor things. All the same, -1 for limited quality of life.

All in all, it's a must-play for fans of the RPG genre who don't mind reading a lot. If you don't enjoy reading, this game is simply not for you. No harm in that. To those, who are afraid that Disco Elysium is filled with useless narrative like the latest Planescape Torment, don't worry. Every line of test is both well written and interesting.

If you're all about self-examination, artistry, politics, murder mysteries or anything in-between, do give Disco Elysium a try!

However, it is important to note that there will be heaps of text, and some of it will be as tedious as it is to very slowly walk around town. Therefore I wouldn't blame anyone who might feel overwhelmed by Disco Elysium, especially considering how long of a game it is. This is nothing completely unbearable, but still recommended to keep in mind.

I think that is part of the game, because you start the game as a character that has no memory of the past. At first, I was a little frustrated with this because I felt so lost, but as the story progresses, it really adds to the roleplaying experience. It’s an open world game where the immersion doesn’t come from the world itself, but from the relationships between the characters. This game gives you the closest experience any form of media has ever provided in taking on the role of a detective trying to solve a case. The acclaim this game has received for its writing is completely warranted, especially because the dialogue is not only with other characters, but its your character's thoughts as well. It really does some cool things that make you understand the psyche of the character as well. I went into this game somewhat hesitantly, but I am honestly blown away at how good it is. It takes a few mental adjustments from you, because its not like many other games, but once you get passed those, its a great experience. The greatest downfall of the game to me was the sometimes overly complex political storyline, it got to the point where I would completely disinterested. The other major issue with this game is that it’s just such a slow burn over the course of a very long time that it’s hard to finish it. I ended up stopping around 20 hours, it’s just too much content, but I enjoyed it while it lasted, I will likely return to it. Expand

Very well written character backgrounds, rich selection of dialogues fruitful character attribute/character selection. Art design and game visuals give you fine vibe about the the world you are living in. Very few technical problems during my experience.
I stuck on the game on my first play-through and game itself can be sometimes not so idiot-proof. Also replaying it second time was not so excited as I was expecting. When you consider the game itself has one big mystery to built on. Maybe it is better to be checked after some given time.

I'll keep the review relatively short. I'd best summarize Disco Elysium as a unique RPG slow burn. You play as a protagonist/antagonist detective in an alternate universe set in the 50s. The choices you make truly determine the outcome of the endgame. In that sense, this is one of those games where your choices do matter. That being said, this game is slow paced, and can be long-winded.I'll keep the review relatively short. I'd best summarize Disco Elysium as a unique RPG slow burn. Overall, a solid game with a lot of replayability if you're wanting to see how different choices play out.

    Pros:
    + Nice voice acting
+ Interesting plot and nicely fleshed out world, super outside-the-box even for a detective game
+ Leveling system encourages different styles of play
+ Psychological thriller-type gameplay in a sense -- different aspects of your being battle it out to influence your player choices.

    Cons
    - Sometimes there is simply too much reading
    - Scarce action, almost non-existent as far as combat goes
    - Slow-paced running throughout the game world, which can get tedious
    - Graphics will not blow anybody away (not too much of a con for this type of game)

Overall, a solid RPG. Unique and worth multiple play throughs for the most part.

But, the total experience is less than it should be. The descriptions in the long list of philosophical ideas and the 24 different skills make for fun reading, but in gameplay terms they wrote more ideas than they could implement. What's the difference between putting skill points into Inland Empire, Shivers, and Half-Light...beats me? How does your political identity as a fascist/communist/nationalist change how you solve a murder case? Like so many games based on choices, the story channels you into choke-points where your decisions have discrete but not-very-important effects. Whether you rant about the evils of corporatism or the superiority of the lactose intolerant races, other characters just seem mildly amused or confused by you, and they seem very unaffected by whatever things you say.

Disco Elysium feels like it is stuck in the wrong medium. It feels like a really great novel that is stuck trying to fill in all the boring bits in-between scenes. Wandering the landscape of Revachol leads to a few fun encounters, but mostly you're clicking on boxes and just finding loose change. I would love to see this game's razor wit applied to a book or film, where it could really shine. But as a game, it felt like a lot of setups and payoffs that didn't really advance the story.

SomeThe only explanation for reviewers giving this game 9/10 or more, is that they never played the classic text-based adventure games from the previous decades, and they thought this game is incredibly original. Admittedly, for a indie game developer came out of nowhere, this game is an impressive achievement, so it still deserves a positive review and might be greatly enjoyed by many. Some of the characters and quests are memorable, and the amount of fed-ex subplots is not quite zero (i.e. go to check those traps again...) but luckily still it is minimal. This said however, I find that the game has a number of crucial flaws. 1) As other reviews have pointed out, the wall of text is always pretentious and unnecessary, a good 2/3 could have been cut out; 2) The skill check system, which has been designed to make the story flow, often obtains the opposite outcome and forces you to save constantly; 3) The dialogue workflow, although quite clever overall, is far from perfect and sometimes doesn't fit with what you have progressed in the story so it makes you wonder why some reviews scored this as a 10 as it's objectively not perfectly done; 4) The clothes system to increase stats is very time wasting and boring. Although I have fulfilled most of the plots, the majority of my skills had still 0 points assigned, which forces you to constantly swap the clothes and scroll several lines of them at some point - unless you memorize their associations with the skills which sounded quite stretched to me so not really that obvious. 5) The controls are a little clunky - again not a huge problem and not too different from the majority of these kind of games, but still not the masterpiece many claim this game is.
Finally, a personal subjective comment, I was not a fan of the political tone of the whole game, which will only appeal to a leftist - a radical one even, but this is not an objective issue with the game. Admittedly, it does fit quite well with the general feel of the game, but still it seems to regularly take hits at people who think free market and law have a place in society, and also made the plot development to me at least quite predictable.

I absolutely loved the RPG elements and really felt that they altered the way I played. The stuff you can say in this game is bizarre. The story ends up being pretty good, though not quite as satisfying as I was ultimately expecting.

My main complaint is probably that it felt like a lot of the game I was just clicking through long text walls of dialogue. Sometimes they were very interesting, other times, not so. At times, it felt like I was reading a book rather than playing a game. The plus side is the writing is much more akin to a book than a game. The down side is there is much less game here than a typical game. While I did find it fun deciding whether to be a free market fundamentalist or an outright communist, I didn't feel that my choices had all that much of an effect on the overall outcome.

That said, you won't play many games like this one. I give it points for being unique even among neo-noir mysteries. It's worth your time if you like this sort of game, so I give it a 7/10.

I knew when i started playing this game it relied heavily on text-based dialogue (inner, or with other persons) but that turned out to be too much for me (and i do love a good story in games), it's just too much senseless information, especially with all the orbs floating around whose purpose it seems to be to give you a little more of background information, but 99% of the time turned out to be completely meaningless.

What also doesn't help is the feeling of being completely overwhelmed with tasks in the first day of playtrough, trying to get a grip on the nonsensical mix-mush of cobbled together european languages (i'm an european btw), the absurdness of it all, trying to make head or tails out of what the game is trying to convey, and finding out that in the end it's all nonsense without a real meaning behind it.

And i'm not even mentioning the political commentary that's awkwardly suggestive, but surely gets irritating and nonsensical along the way.

Also buggy, after months of release still no fix for simple things like:

    - Windowed/fullscreen settings not working.
    - Tasks on map which still appear even when you can't finish them any more because, for example, the object is gone.
    - Continuously irritating notification on inventory, whilst nothing has changed.
    - Getting stuck walking, and have to exit/reload the game.

Absolutely not worthy of doing another playtrough with a different character imho.

They said that Revachol would be full of guns, and it's not. You get a skill for improving your shooting, but you can't actually find a gun outside of one specific point in the story. There are numerous side quests that are unresolved or underexplored. And once you trigger the story's climax, you are locked in and railroaded until the end.

Politics are a big part of the story, but every political dialogue you can choose is played for laughs. At no point do YOUR political choices affect the story, yet it's thrown in your face constantly. It's like they couldn't decide if they wanted the game to be a satire or not.
This game has a **** of typos, way more than in any RPG I've played, and way way more than I expected of a writing team that's led by a published author. It's like they couldn't afford a proofreader.

It's also buggy. At a certain point one of the four types of drugs in the game stopped functioning in my menu/UI, it's just disabled for the rest of the playthrough. Many of the thoughts are also bugged and don't work, and there's no way to tell unless you invest in them first, at which point you have to invest more to get rid of them or revert to a previous save. And the saves are also buggy. Beating the game seems to have broken the save system. Now the game either doesn't allow me to manually save, or it lets me then freezes. Autosaves sometimes trigger like normal, but won't show up.

This game is saved by its excellent art, its large amount of solid writing, unique skill system, and the high points of its world & story. It's a breath of fresh air in the CRPG genre, but I would have been disappointed had I paid full price. It's no Planescape: Torment.

However, the final act reveals that this is not the case. Very disappointing ending that makes you feel that you wasted your time on this game. But the game had it's moments. It was fun to be a super drunk art apocalyptic communist cop.

People like to hype this game up because of its originilaity.

Yes it is original. Art is remarkable. There's atmosphere. There's lore and world-building. Characters are interesting, but I just didn't enjoy spending my precious free time in a miserable world with miserable people and drunkard protagonist, srry. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would say about 80% of the conversations and readings is moot. You get sucked into drivel only to find out hours later you have achieved nothing. I didn't realize that this forebodes the ending as well. The mistake this game makes is the same as the very old Blade Runner game; You're dragged along in a story , but there's barely a game.

Then there's this endless pushing of communism. You are pushed to choose either for communism, socialism or some half baked form of capitalism. But the latter, of course, doesn't get real exposure and is only presented to trick you into believing you have a choice.

The politic narrative doesn't stop there. Those who believe in races are racists, is implied. A Semanese warrior believes in the race theory (the nut, haha) and thinks of himself as racist, the game teaches us. The point of this little scene is that through him it is told that if YOU believe in different races, you are a racist. The in-game character, our detective, can "subscribe" to the race theory after a check and earn a a plus for one thing and a negative for the other. That's how this is played out. It's not like he can "unsubscribe from the race theory". Get it? Assuming you don't believe in races is normalized. For the other, you must subscribe. The good old left wing narrative: there are no races, but if you don't believe that, you're a racist!

The gaming-industry has been taken over by a certain group you'll find out one way or the other. In this game it's done subtly. But the alert gamer will find out.

Remember Southpark's "Aaaand it's gone." remark Well, this game is the very same. Every conversation and moment you have invested in turns out to be irrelevant. All of your choices did not matter and all of the mysteries end with a cheap punchline. Like true post modernistic political correctness, the game ends with pushing nihilism through your throat. I should have known when they pushed so hard for communism but what else can you do but keep on playing to find out?

That's right, you read it correctly: you will get NO answers in the end. Yes, you'll find the murderer, and you'll then see that throughout the game you never had enough information to figure it out. It's like a bad movie. When you finally meet the murderer, you'll finally know why and it turns out to be a far fetched motive - only meant as a punchline: you might end up as insane as this guy because of a woman.

And that's all. The women you're interested in is nothing what the game made you believe (she turns out to be unimportant too ffs), and you'll never learn what "the pale" is - the most interesting aspect of this virtual world. You know it's responsible for the decay of the mind, but that's it. Everything and everybody else in this world is just filler. All of it was irrelevant to the main mystery.

No answers for you goy. Nor do you get real closure other than the said nihilistic narrative: it's only about what you do know and then it all ends. So who cares, right?

If you like a **** ton of reading and psychedelics at every corner, only then it's a game for you. There's no other reason to purchase it.

The story is good, but it reads more like a choose your own adventure book than a video game. Maybe the games "journalists" were wowed by something that has been around since Zork or The Hobbit. The only difference is a better user interface, which still crashes out occasionally.

First i wanted to note that i played Planescape: Torment right before the release of this game, so any comparisons i make have nothing to do with nostalgia or rose tinted goggles.
Unlike the greatest written game of all time - Planescape, Disco Elysium falls into every possible pitfall of its genre. In no particular order:
    1) The writing is bloated and self-indulgent.
Unlike what most people claim, Planescape was very concise and to the point. It respected your time and didn't waste it on meaningless paragraphs on paragraphs of text, that in the best postmodernist fashion mean absolutely nothing to the player. Planescape was never a diarrhea of words. Lore dumps were contained and almost entirely skipable(especially important on the subsequent playthroughs). Planescape trusted you to be smart enough and figure out less important parts of the world yourself.
Disco Elysium is the opposite of that. Prepare to spend tens of hours of playtime on the text that has absolutely nothing to do with the tasks at hand or the dialogue. It came to the point that i now believe that you could cut 2/3 of the text and the players wont miss anything but fluff. The fluff is not as terrible and boring as in Pillars of Eternity, but there's more of it and its there to pad the playtime and validate someones degree in writing.
    2) Show - don't tell.
The game is all "tell - don't show". You will read so much interesting(and unnecessary) history and lore that you will ask yourself, "why im in this boring **** looking for bottles, instead of those cool places".
    3) The humor is cringeworthy.
Authors seem to think that "im so random an quirky" is funny. Needless to say if you don't like this type of humor, all of it will fall flat on its face.
    4) Politics and other controversial topics are all bark, no bite.
Authors said that they will tackle politics and they did. Its done in the most limpdicked way possible, consisting mostly of "im a nihilist Morty" style of writing. One moment the game pretends to be edgy and dark(you can kill a minor and say you want to **** one), another its censoring words that you used when you were in a middle school. In the SAME scene.
It laughs at every stance(by representing them as stupid), while trying(and failing) to pretend that it doesn't have a dog in the fight. If you do all 4 political stances as a separate playthroughs you will easily figure out what are the politics of the authors.
    5) The only actual gameplay is "collect the bottles".
At first i though it was a joke aimed at Life is Strange, with its meme bottle collecting gameplay. How wrong i was. The rest of the game is walking and reading simulator with a dice game thrown in every once in a while.
Say what you want about Planescape being a book and not a game, but it had a robust rule set, decent combat and fantastic spellcasting. On top of having better writing and story.
    6) Soundtrack is all over the place and almost never fits.
Quality of the OST varies greatly and yet again reminded me of LiS. I also currently playing Persona 5 and i nearly threw up in my mouth after listening to some of the Elysium compositions. Ironically soundtrack of the game is a far cry from the fabled "disco life".
    7) Environments are nothing special.
Given the lack of gameplay, one would expect it to look absolutely fantastic. In my opinion(and this is the first and the last time i will use this word) Planescape looked more atmospheric and interesting.
    8) Bugs
I started the game with get the shoe quest being impossible to finish because the second shoe disappeared after i interacted with it, without giving me the usual internal dialogue. Reloading fixed nothing, i had to quit the game and start a new one.
Dialogue window sometimes locks up with no text being displayed, and no option to close the window.
I wasted a day researching an idea, only to then notice that it bugged out and stopped despite claiming that its internalizing.
Some other minor bugs i cant remember from the top of my head.

There are several other problems i have with the game and its developers, but i will not drag this out any longer and force you to read another blanket of text. Leave that to the game.
