Just played it for the first time this year (2015) and I loved it. Yes the graphics haven't aged well. But besides that, this game gives you so much freedom even compared to games of today. Plus the story is one of the most interesting in gaming history. My opinion, get a graphics mod (New Vision) and play Deus Ex if you haven't yet. You won't regret it.

A plot that has no trouble throwing every conspiracy theory in a blender without being over the top, dialogue's top notch and horrible 90's voice acting (good for the camp factor, but that's not everyone's cup of tea)
Sub-par shooting mechanics, but it must be kept in mind that this is an RPG that happens to be in first person, resulting in its main mechanics being based around stats,

Many different actions still lead to the same path and if there are any different outcomes, they are done in a lazy manner. Characters you make sure survive, still end up not appearing much anymore after the big decisive moment...other characters you may want to kill are unkillable and kill you instead...some important dialogue options that literally point towards an opposite outcome, still force the same outcome...and so much more. You are still forced to play the way the creators want you to play. It's disappointing.

People can praise this game, if they liked it. But calling this game the best thing ever made is just disrespectful and cringy.

So let me start this review by saying that Deus Ex - a computer game initially released for Microsoft Windows in june 2000 - is not, and has never been, a role-playing game, but rather a first person shooter game with RPG elements. Now that we have gotten that inconvenience out of the way we can finally start to analyze the game and the impact it had on the industry as a whole.

The story takes place in the near future with JC Denton - an agent of the counter-terrorist agency UNTACO - as the protagonist. In a world where widespread terrorism and panic are the norm, different organizations fight each other to see who gets to rule this orwellian dystopia, with the main character being forced to pick a side on this conflict he has no hopes of fully comprehending. Technological advancements were not followed by appropriate ideologies, resulting in a macabre setting where agents of the state become machines through powerful enhancements in the form of augmentations, blindly following orders for their superiors with a half-assed patriotic excuse about "protecting the homeland". In the meantime, the terrorists use a convenient modified version of the same speech in an attempt to justify the inhuman acts they too perpetuate.

In terms of gameplay, Deus Ex is primarily a stealth game with role-playing and action elements sprinkled in between, though you can play it in a "guns-blazing" fashion if you prefer that way. Players can also use a variety of abilities in order achieve the goals settled by game such as hacking ATMs and computer terminals, lockpicking doors, bypassing security devices or even destroying physical barriers with weapons.

The augmentations mentioned in the second paragraph also work their way into the core of the game. Throughout the journey players can find canisters that, when "installed", give JC a special ability that can be used at the cost of a separate energy meter to perform certain tricks that make the game a bit easier. For instance, one augmentation allows Denton to run without making noise, which can make the process of dealing with enemies up close a bit quicker. Said augmentations can also be upgraded to be more efficient with the help special containers found randomly in the world.

Gunplay, on the other hand, could have been much better. The main problem is that the developers decided to turn weapon accuracy into a stat like damage and range. Instead of making the players feel accomplished by putting time into upgrading this particular element, it makes them frustrated because their bullets are not hitting the enemies even though they are like 3 feet away from them. There also doesn't seem to be a dedicated reload button for some reason, meaning that if you have just 3 bullets left on your pistol and want to reload it, you will have to waste the rest of your precious ammo (and keep in mind that this game was released 2 years after Half-Life).

The health system, out of all things, is another interesting factor. It differs from other games by giving each limb a separate life bar, with head and torso being the two critical body parts that must be protected in order to prevent a game over. This allow for some neat and dynamic effects like not being able to jump if your both of your legs have been severely damaged. However, not being able to be choose to heal members individually with medkits is something that drastically contrasts such a deep mechanic, and I am not sure why Ion Storm decided to take this course.

What may have once been a groundbreaking game for its time is rather dated nowdays. Though Deus Ex is still very fun to play if you can stomach some rusty mechanics, it has not aged nearly as well as other critically acclaimed 5th generation games. On the other hand, time hasn't treated it as badly as something like Goldeneye 007 which, let's face it, is pretty much a mess in the current video game era. Even with its age I still consider Deus Ex a game that should be sitting in every PC gamer collection. It's got a good story, occasional good level design and overall enough gameplay variety to keep players interested.

The observant may note that in a sea of praise for this game, my review score of 6 is somewhat alone. This may be for a number of reasons--maybe I tried to play it too far past its prime as compared to others, or maybe I am more critical of its flaws than the nostalgia-goggled mass. In any case, I would have loved to give this game a higher score, but a few key points keep it from being above average for me.

The very reason this game is praised as an innovation (and rightly so) is why I cannot love it as others do. The choice of character development is just too skewed in the Stealth/Pistol/Lockpick builds favor. You can try to build a tank of a character that shoots all that moves with rockets and LAMs, but you will quickly find yourself out of ammo and stuck in unwinnable situations unless you take up arms in a different category.

Be clear, I have no problem playing a thief. I did so for many years in every game I was able, and have become quite good at it. But the problem with sneaking around and being a OHKO character is that much of the difficulty of the game is cut away since no dev has been able to design a game in which multiple combat styles are available without making stealth OP (this is true even today). As such, you feel gimped as a character that specs in anything but stealth related skills (silenced handguns, crossbows, lockpicking, silenced SR's). So while the game is throwing GEP guns and LAWS at me, I am forced to ignore the more straightforward and difficult approach of nosily navigating my way to objectives in favor of crawling through yet another air duct.

Without looking at any message boards or wikis, I guaranteethe default JC build goes something like Max Small Weapons,Max Lockpick OR Electronics, Max Rifles, one or two points in computers, with maybe a few points thrown into heavy or melee just because they were laying around.

Augs have the same problem, with only 1 or 2 being truely useful the entire game (Flashlight, Healing) another few being situational (Fast Movement, Cloak, Lift Enviro/Bullet Protection) and everything else never being touched.

Oh, and on the topic of weapons, they tend to be unbalanced as well. Ammo acquisition makes or breaks most weapons, which means the handgun and assault rifles should be king, however the AS is a burst fire hog that is just plain inefficient compared to a single head shot from a pistol or a swipe with the DRS. Things like LAMs are situational, but effective at any level on any difficulty, making the skill all but useless to invest into. The same can be said for heavy weapons.

In short, I feel like my character was railroaded with an illusion of choice in a game that boasts sandbox levels in which the player is supposed to be able to play their own way in whatever style they choose.

Now, saying all of that, the game is still great. The story has some great hooks, the gameplay is great, the variation of ways to complete objectives in revolutionary for its time, and you can tell a lot of love went into it. Pretty much all the praise you hear about this game is true, and I would recommend it to anyone. Its a definite prerequisite if you think you have any business calling yourself a fan of VGs.

I'll give this game an honest review. It's not a masterpiece. It's not unplayably bad like the vast minority says, its doesn't hold up well to modern day like the vast majority says.

Deus Ex is a FPS/RPG that gives the player an incredible amount of choice. It's also a very ugly game nowadays with no charm in its art style. I don't factor that in because I played with the two graphics overhaul mods so I got fairly good textures and model quality without deviating from the original art style at all. The main problem of the art style is its going for realistic, and as we will discover with GEN 7 in a few years, that art style holds up the worst as time passes.

The story is fairly decent, with a interesting plot about the illuminati in a cyberpunk setting. If you've played the more modern prequel Human Revolution, you'll see about the same level of storytelling quality here. However, it lacks a convincing atmosphere that saved HR from being incredibly tedious due to how slow the plot progresses in both of these games. It also lacks the length of HR. While HR is about 20 hours, Deus Ex 1 I beat in 9 and a half hours doing quite a bit of exploration.

Then you got the gameplay. I'll give it to them devs, theres usually quite a lot of options. However, the belief there is tons more then Human Revolution is actually in most cases. Lets take its famous first level liberty island for example. You have a wide explorable (and the least interestingly designed I might add) area surrounding a destroyed Statue of Liberty. You can (and should) do some exploration around and gather supplies, then you got a sub objective. In the end, there is really only four ways to do this map after exploring. 1. Charge up the front guns blazing. 2. Sneak up the front. 3. Sneak up the back by stacking boxs to climb the shipping containers, or do the sub objective which gives you a convenient path up out of the building. Any remaining solutions are silly solutions which just waste time. Most areas are about as varied or less, and might include a diplomatic solution. Human Revolution, mocked for its lack of variety, almost always gave you two out of the way sneaky solutions, made sneaking straight through possible (note I NEVER used cloak in either games) as well as the guns glazing approach. The difference is that Human Revolution rarely had extremely bland similar areas connected to realistic but overly complex venting systems like Deus Ex which actually had nothing to the game. Melee weapons are also strange. At the start, you got about a 50% chance of a baton (the best non-lethal, and third best melee weapon over all) from knocking the guard out if you have chosen melee as your start upgrade. It will literally take about 7 hours before you get another upgrade due to early game low skill point gain, and then you will have the dragon sword. The only melee weapon able to fight high end enemies really at all without master level and even then its a stretch. Seeing as the tranq darts are literally useless, the game intentionally makes beating the game without killing nigh impossible after the first half of the game.

People also say the game has a real sense of challenge compared to HR. This is true...until you get the dragon sword, (and this happens in the main quest) which is so incredibly overpowered that the only thing that can match it is explosive weapons, further limiting variety. HR didn't have this problem. (well if you never used typhoon or cloak like me it didn't).

The ending is also incredibly unsatisfying. It presents three options ignoring all previous actions, and it fails at what HR did by making one significantly better for humanity then the rest (The Helios ending). HR I spent 30 minutes just sitting trying to figure out what ending to choose. I spent 3 seconds in Deus Ex 1. The endings are then just as open as Deus Ex: HR, except boring and really don't feel like endings like HR did.

The soundtrack is so-so. Half the tracks are immediately forgettable, half the tracks are fantastic. Sadly, the ending music was the worst song in the soundtrack, making an already unsatisfying ending even worse. This is something HR did extremely well.

Basically, what I'm saying is, while Deus Ex one has a more in-depth albeit more awkward combat system, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was just a plain more enjoyable game then the original and has an incredible atmosphere completely lacking in the original, and you should buy THAT game if you want to fulfill your cyberpunk Illuminati capitalist corruption story need, because while I enjoyed my time with Deus Ex, there is many other games I could have been playing that I would have enjoyed so so much more.

Second thing, this game doesn't have a soul feeling, that you are in the game. RPG system doesn't exist you simply take exp when level design gave you!!! For example for killing, cracking computers, or stealth action you take nothing, but when you explore small secret room, speak with NPC whatever else, you take exp points! The all game is build on idea when level scenarist think that is time, then you take exp, items, ammunition simply all things that you need. The game looked really good in its day and now with mods (Revision) it looks still acceptable on my Windows 7 based PC. It's original as it has a deep storyline, intelligent conversations, lots of gaming-hours. You can go almost entirely stealth (no casualties), non-lethal stealth, non-lethal action, lethal action and everything in between. I went for both Deus Ex and DX2 stealth non-lethal. It was super rewarding.

The most excellent feature was its message. Clearly this game was ahead of its time, attempting to expose governing forces bigger than us. But Deus Ex has a grand weakness and that is that the abilities you have are not very useful, especially if you go stealth non-lethal. I notice many reviewers have the same complaint.

Next thing is that special abilities use a lot of energy and there's not enough energy re-supply available so that was totally uncool. If you know the map, i.e. having played this game before then it's obviously far easier, but going stealth non-lethal the first time is resource intensive and I wasn't catered towards this style. Almost all of my problems were solved by crouching behind a guard (crouching makes you still catch up with walking guards) and knock-him or taser him unconscious. Rarely was a special ability needed.

You keep pushing those F-keys. Things like strength could have easily been made a passive ability, but everything you did was a drain on your resources which demanded continuous on-off switching. You feel like a beginning piano-player. It broke the immersion for me many times.

I gave this game only a 6/10. What's the point of being special when your special abilities aren't very useful and labor intensive to use? The game is rightfully legendary for its story though.

If you haven't played this game, I envy you, it's one of the finest examples of it's genre. The learning curve is somewhat steep and the first level is one of the hardest in the game, but the story and everything else about the game is well worth the effort you'll put into that first level and more. It redefined the FPS genre and revitalised it. Superb gaming.

A masterpiece, just so ahead of its time. Just epic in its scope, and while it's not flawless by any means, it's just one of the most amazing games ever made.. the depth and detail in the story.. all the way through to the final quote at the end - it feels like you've been through an experience - how games should be. I don't think I've played another RPG completely through as many times as I have Deus Ex (although Mass Effect must surely be in a close second if not overtaking it). The most remarkable thing about this game is that it actually had a fairly strong story for 2000; a story you wouldn't have to be embarrassed of. The detailed and thoughtful story legitimized the game as art I don't think I've played another RPG completely through as many times as I have Deus Ex (although Mass Effect must surely be in a close second if not overtaking it). The most remarkable thing about this game is that it actually had a fairly strong story for 2000; a story you wouldn't have to be embarrassed of. The detailed and thoughtful story legitimized the game as art rather than just a product. Insightful and surprisingly relevant story elements make up the majority of the story. Gameplay is also fairly interesting, although dragging a bit in areas. This usually depends on the mood of the level designers in each area - most levels are very streamlined and flow well with multiple approaches and solutions, although some can be sparse and amateurish, clashing with the semi-espionage gameplay. Music is mostly electronic - appropriate for the game, and occasionally catchy. Most people that remember this game well will recall the music when entering the Wan Chai market in Hong Kong, or the subtle beeping of the UNATCO HQ theme. The game was an appropriate length for its time, but would probably be considered short today, lasting between 10 and 25 hours depending on your involvement in the game, strategy, and your ability to overcome the objectives. There are a few problems with the game, however. Graphics were not that great, even for its time, but the economy of the art is such that the graphics engine's limited resources aren't wasted much. Level geometry tends to be fairly blocky even compared to Unreal Tournament, and especially compared to Quake 3 Arena. Although this could be tweaked if you were familiar with the Unreal engine, it was also difficult getting the game to play in resolutions much higher than 1024 x 768 or in colors higher than 16 bpp. Some of the voice acting is truly pathetic, which I must admit freely despite being an avid fan. The faux-French and Chinese accents are some of the most poorly stereotyped and absurd things I have heard out of a serious video game. Other voices are okay but JC's and Walton Simons' voices have the emotive range of a 2x4. The game didn't ship with multiplayer and it was tacked on in a later patch. Some enjoyed it, but I believe the general consensus was that it was completely awful and the game didn't lend itself to adversarial multiplayer at all. There are some ponderous gameplay elements as well, such as the concept of lock picks and electronic security hacking tools being disposable and expendable. Skill advancement is also based on exploration and objective completion rather than usage, meaning you could swim around in a sunken freighter somewhere and suddenly be an expert sniper (!?), which I thought was strange. A common dispute about the game's story among my friends is whether or not the augmentations that JC picks up are plausible or not. As a helium atom (an incredibly tiny element) is one angstrom across, and the machines described in the game are in the range of nanometers, they could only be a few thousand atoms across, tops, if the packing efficiency of the atoms and their clouds was 100%. Normally the game is more science than fiction - in fact, my bringing this up should tell you the level of expertise you would need before having to suspend disbelief - but this element of the story is somewhat clumsy. Overall, Deus Ex is probably one of the games closest to being "art" that I've played in the past 10 years. People who entered the market since then really missed something by not playing this game. Many will act like Bioshock has a masterful story even though it's essentially Doom but underwater and with dialogue (or more like monologue). If you have not played Deus Ex, then you have missed a very large portion of PC gaming and its history, perhaps equal with not playing Doom, Quake, the blockbuster Blizzard and Valve games, Wing Commander, etc. Expand

A mix of system shock, splinter cell and half life. This RPG/Action/Stealth game was revolutionary when it came out and there is honestly no game like this in this generation. Even the other Deus Ex games don't hold up to this masterpiece and I'll explain why.

Firstly the mission and level design is some of the greatest I've ever seen and they it's the same as in hitman 2: Silent Assassin. The missions are based of hub levels and they really aren't linear when you approach these missions. For example in the new york mission to find the NSF's generator, you must find out which building it is in. Use the map as a clue, talk to people and to find a back door to the path of the building and once you do that, you can approach the building however you want. You can go through the front doors or go around the back and even the rooftops. You have so many options to approach these missions that they give a lot of replaybility for these type of levels. Sure some hubs are smaller and more straightforward (Ocean lab, Area 51) But generally the hubs (no matter how big or small.) It leaves a bunch of room to approach a mission however you want. And plus in the bigger hubs, you can do a ton of exploration as well.

Secondly the story is prefect and memorable (probably due to nostalgia) Unlike the Prequels, the first Deus Ex really shines on it's storytelling, with it's character development, dialogue & the controversial topics, the game really excels in the storytelling department. The prequels fail on this because due to the fact that many of it's controversial topics were limited and the lack of an interesting villain wasn't present. DX doesn't hold back on the storytelling, the story will keep you engaged from start to finish.

Overall this has to be the best game I've ever played, with it's numerous gameplay possibilities and it's excellent storytelling, usually I have something negative but not this review, this game ran flawlessly and I found zero problems with the story and gameplay. I find the game to be shorter than the prequels but I find it to be at it's sweet spot on it's length. This game deserves to be GOAT even if others don't agree we can say it's one of the best. Look at the reviews, people love this game, it's a cult following pretty much.

I'd seriously recommend this game to everyone.

It doesn't reward you for sticking to a single course of action during the entire game. It lets you decide what fits any given situation. Deus Ex, in other words, makes you feel like a superhuman spy with a massive toolkit fitted for any obstacle - your success depends on your ability to identify which part of your kit is best suited for the challenge you face. Contrast this to other games in the genre, which all to often restricts you to one set of tools for each and every encounter - since the character customization or reactivity penalizes you if you try to mix it up.

Deus Ex understood what each of its spiritual successors has failed to grasp, and for that, I salute it.

One of my favorite systems is having 6 health bars: 2 for arms, 2 for legs, 1 for chest and 1 for head. If you lose one leg you will move slower, lose both and you cant stand up and have to crawl your way through the game. At one point I lost my right arm during a gun fight. Low on health kits I was no longer able to use my rifle and had to fight my way through with a mere knife.

The environments feel lived in due to smart decisions in level design and script choices. For example the Hilton Hotel's LED name is broken; the 'hil' portion is blacked out and only the 'ton' remains. The local residents joke on this, referring it to the 'ton hotel.

All of this is complimented with a stellar soundtrack and a game world designed to cause you to make choices, both for story and gameplay purposes. Play this game with the GMDX mod and you will discover a masterpiece.

The game follows a linear story and path, but if you want to hack computer terminals, run n’ gun, or sneak through each level, it lets you. Need a code for a door? Hack a computer.

This 23-year-old game still holds up extremely well due to how unbelievably well-designed the whole experience is. If you are a student of game design, you owe it to yourself to play Deus Ex as it is a tour de force in this regard. The story and story-telling are top-notch. The game's systems regarding choices and consequences are so subtle that I am still learning new things about the game even after multiple playthroughs. I love how Deus Ex emphasizes choices in gameplay, like how you help someone, or who you kill, or the simple reactivity that an inventory system can bring if you mismanage resources. It's such an amazing game, and I cannot recommend it enough. Expand

Pros: Multiple ways of playing the game (stealth, combat, mixed), great world, good graphics for its time, good voice actors.
Cons: Could not see because the game is dark (need to go to settings to make the game lighter) which I consider is kind of a hack, no visual indication on where you should go, bad gun hitting mechanic.

Always my pick as the best game of all time and definitely the best PC game of all time. Best storyline of all time and the fact you can kill important characters and they won't be there later in the game to speak shows how ahead of it's time the game was.

The greatest piece of work ever made that isn't just a game, it is a reality. I've played this three times in a row and I will always recommend it to anyone no matter what. I think Deus Ex is a bit scary in how it has predicted a lot on modern life but even though it seems a bit weird at times because of this, a lot of what is said in Deus Ex makes you question a lot about reality. There are four major things that Deus Ex predicted (from my perspective):

    - The attacks on the world trade centre on 9/11
    - Facebook's irresponsible miss-usage of data and other organisations exploiting data and using data mining algorithims
    - The worship of celebrities and opinion leaders in a modern age and how social media is used
    - The coronavirus

Now I'm not saying that I agree with everything in this game. Obviously, there is no such yip yap as the illuminati, but what I can take away from it is that there is a secret "elite" somewhere out there who could be exploiting people and we don't know about it, but I don't 100% agree with this. But I chose to play this again during the coronavirus outbreak mainly because of how Deus Ex got this right. In the game, the plot centres around a virus that has caused lockdowns across the globe and forced governments to take control of the streets in every country and crazily enough this is just about what we are seeing at the moment. This doesn't mean the "illuminati is going to take over", it's just crazy how Deus Ex got this right.

The Morpheus conversation in this game is the best scene in gaming history, I don't think there is anything better than it. Morpheus is 100% right about "humans feeling amusement" when watched. Just look at what we do today, using social media apps to post stories, post fragments of our life on there and what do people do? they judge, and what Morpheus says is that judgement is what fuels society. He is right. Then he said that after the worship of gods 100 years ago, people now desire fame and worship famous people and again he is right. Everyone follows a politician or someone famous, no matter what political ideology you hold, you'll just agree with what that famous person says 75% of the time because you worship them.

It's stuff like this that make Deus Ex an amazing game. The story is just untouchable and by far the best plot ever written, and this is a game. I've seen middle-aged people talk about this game because of how good the plot is and I wish more people knew about this game and played it.

For the gameplay however, while Deus Ex is an masterpiece, it has a steep learning curve. Don't expect to be a walk in the park, you need to really engage with what is being thrown at you. Use your skill points wisely, etc. When you get the gameplay however, you'll be playing this game for hours to see what the story has to offer you.

Most of this game is just me relating it to the real world and its just truthful in how things have progressed. Now that the game is on sale for 0.69 p (notice how masterpieces like Deus Ex and Hollow knight are usually the most feasible games) I would highly recommend it to anyone. Of course, get the revision not just for achievements and the upgrades it has, but because it makes the game less buggier and gives great optimisation for win 10.

Buy this game and experience it, you will not regret it

Still the GOAT, even 20 years on. Of course, there's a good dose of nostalgia in my opinion, but even for new players, the atmosphere, narrative, and intangible 'sense' that the player is experiencing something special offset the obvious graphical and gameplay shortcomings.

The depth of the game, including the newspapers, random e-mails, random chatter all around the zones... And the atmosphere, characters, plot, skill system, multiple approaches to problems and so on make this game a pinnacle in its own time. The fact that the graphics have aged doesn't make this game any less good because you can use mods that improve textures and still enjoy it.

+ Many ways to get to the goal
+ Lots to explore (it's fun to get passwords to get more information or items)
    + Many locations
+ Milestone for storytelling in the game industry
    - The game has aged a bit badly (controls, graphics etc.)
    - You often run the risk of not finding your way (faltering progress)
    - The augmentations are tedious to use
    - Only English sound

The best game in all our world. Of course there are more but it isn't mention. Why I think so?
For at first, there is one of the most interesting plot. In the first cut scene more plot than in the biggest part of new games.
For at second, that's immersive sim. What does it means? It means that this is realistic game. And realistic part there is made very good. The biggest part of it

And I don't I know what to say about this game more. Just play in it and you'll understand the sence and you'll fill that you are main hero.

P.S. If I made some mistakes - excuse me. I am from Russia.

Deus Ex shows what games can be. It couldn't be a book or a movie and offer the same experience. The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly - killing thousands; drugs, disease and pollution kill even more. The world's economies are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor grows ever wider.
