It's quite a sight to see a game as old as this one that can still be considered the greatest game money can buy. The storyline, environment, and gameplay all continue to cater to the greatest of a complex gamer's desires, and in our modern world where run-of-the-mill shooters dominate, we can only hope people will look in the past and learn to create plots as great as that of Deus Ex.

Easily one of the greatest games ever made. Intelligent, thought-provoking, and original, with enough variety to keep you coming back - I've been playing it for 7 years and I'm still not bored. Nothing here isn't prefect, from the attribute balancing to the sense of exploration, even the music. A legitimate must-play.

Six months after playing I was still having dreams about this game. I do not hand out 10's lightly, and I have been playing computer games, primarily shooters, since Wolf. 3D. But Deus Ex---wow. If you're of a more intellectual bent and find a story-driven atmosphere important, this game is untouchable. A must-play. If you're of a more intellectual bent and find a story-driven atmosphere important, this game is untouchable. A must-play. The voice acting is great, the story is impeccable, and the environment is rich. Reading random newspapers and books on shelves brings out a whole new type of depth in games. The three different endings are clever, and reflecting back on it all it sends chills down my spine because this is what the future could look like. (And I'm not even a conspiracy theory nut.) Best of all is the length---this game is LONG. And that is refreshing, in my opinion. Half way through the game you find out that some of your closest allies weren't on your side after all. Type to re-think everything! Most everything about the game was revolutionary at the time---basically because Deus Ex successfully mixes the RPG and shooter genre. Now, if your only interest is running around and blowing up baddies then you might leave disappointed. In fact, you'll probably get annoyed because much of the game focuses on the story. But for those like an enriching, unforgettable experience---Deus Ex is bar none. Expand

It motivates you to continue further into the game, so when you are playing it, you want to run through it like a bullet, and when you are not playing it, you crave it like cigarettes. There are usually at least 2 ways ( most of the time 3 ways) to approach a problem, adding diversity. There are so many professions you can have, and this game works on the skill tree system so you can make hybrid classes and stuff. Sneaking around without anyone noticing you definitely takes brain work, like figuring out a puzzle and setting up the plan. Of course, you could just go heavy weapons, as this game lets you choose. The plot, most of all, was fantastic and intelligent. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Oh yeah, Cincinnati Enquirer ever heard of a SAVE BUTTON?!!! And GameSpot, GRAPHICS ARE'NT EVERYTHING YOU KNOW! Expand

This is a defining classing of gaming, if you have not played it yet there is no excuse. It costs at most $10 and since it came out in 2000 anyones PC can run it.

This is certainly one of my favorite games of all time. I loved the gameplay style and the multiple routes through the game meaning I still enjoy playing through it today. The game challenges you to think and the plot is well thought out with good twists. By todays standards the visuals are not top notch, but the game itself still shines through. Deus Ex is definitely a must for any gamer.

While the core gameplay mechanics can seem unwieldy or slow, and the difficulty curve is askew (starting hard then getting easier) the intelligently written and challenging plot more than makes up for any shortcomings. With gameplay mechanics that found the magic balance between player skill and character attributes, intricate-yet-accessible character customization (skills, augmentations, weapon customization, limited inventory forcing you to choose equipment suited to your play style), and a strong multi-linear (generally linear plot with multiple routes from start to 3 similar-but-narratively-distinct endings) story that invokes some of the most popular global conspiracy theories of the post-cold-war West, Deus Ex adapted the RPG genre to the FPS interactivity model in a way fans of both genres can appreciate (particularly impressive with respect to RPG fans). The graphics and audio (short loops for ambient sound, rudimentary environmental audio, short soundtrack) are dated, though well-implemented, and the AI scripting is more-or-less the 3-D version of Space Invaders AI (all guns blazing and weave as you CHARGE!), but even today the game is fun and engaging. In fact, despite having played through the story a dozen times or so, I'd gladly shell out another $50 for the same plot and mechanics on a contemporary rendering engine with slightly tweaked AI scripting; I've always wondered why the sequel(s? I haven't checked-up on DX3 recently) decided to mess with a winning formula when they could have kept all of the mechanics and simply made new stories on next-gen engines. Anyway, I can't recommend this highly enough. Expand

I agree entirely with what A. R. said. It's a great mixture of different genres. It doesn't have the same character building as D&D, and it doesn't have the same mindless shoot-em-up qualities of Counterstrike, but it blends them both into something beautiful, with an absolutely AMAZING Conspiracy Theory storyline. This game is incredible. As a pure RPG it can't stand up to Fallout, and as a pure FPS it doesn't play as well as Half Life 2. But Deus Ex mixes both of these elements so beautifully together (and serves it with a side of "fantastic story") that it surpasses both of these mighty games, and essentially everything else. For my part, the game's greatest strength is its ability to both present an engrossing story with interesting and developed characters and at the same time give you the freedom to act as you please. Besides the variety of tactical options the game gives you (in the form of skills, weapons, augmentations, and hidden secrets) to complete your goals, the choices you make in the story will have impacts throughout the game.
