It doesn't matter that the game have more than 15 years, you MUST play this game. Story, decisions, atmosphere, variety of scenarios... outstanding game that could offer you more than actual AAA games.

Great game. Best FPS - RPG of all the time. Great combitation of all: heroes charisma, interesting gameplay and clever RPG - system. Only two sins - stupid II and graphics, but it's so small fee for all brilliance of this game. And if even 16, 30, 50 years past - you must play it. 10/10

What made Deus Ex so mind-blowingly awesome, such a hallmark of game design, is that it asks you to decide, for each single obstacle you face, which approach you want to use. You're not asked to stealth through the whole game even when combat seems a better approach, or to shoot and kill everyone even when creeping through the shadows would be smarter. It doesn't reward you for sticking to a single course of action during the entire game. It lets you decide what fits any given situation. Deus Ex, in other words, makes you feel like a superhuman spy with a massive toolkit fitted for any obstacle - your success depends on your ability to identify which part of your kit is best suited for the challenge you face. Contrast this to other games in the genre, which all to often restricts you to one set of tools for each and every encounter - since the character customization or reactivity penalizes you if you try to mix it up.

Deus Ex understood what each of its spiritual successors has failed to grasp, and for that, I salute it.

I played it many many years after the release, and while the graphics and mechanics don't hold very well in this day and age, the atmosphere and story about all the conspiracy theories turning out to be real suck you in like there is no tomorrow. One of the very best storylines and atmospheres in video games ever. A masterpiece.

Deus Ex boasts a truly immersive experience due to its tactical gameplay, character dialogue, and engaging environments. One of my favorite systems is having 6 health bars: 2 for arms, 2 for legs, 1 for chest and 1 for head. If you lose one leg you will move slower, lose both and you cant stand up and have to crawl your way through the game. At one point I lost my right arm during a gun fight. Low on health kits I was no longer able to use my rifle and had to fight my way through with a mere knife.

The environments feel lived in due to smart decisions in level design and script choices. For example the Hilton Hotel's LED name is broken; the 'hil' portion is blacked out and only the 'ton' remains. The local residents joke on this, referring it to the 'ton hotel.

All of this is complimented with a stellar soundtrack and a game world designed to cause you to make choices, both for story and gameplay purposes. Play this game with the GMDX mod and you will discover a masterpiece.

Deus Ex. I’ve known about this game for as long as I can remember…..so, what, since 2000? Yet, I never paid any attention to it; always just glancing over it; not knowing I’ve been overlooking a masterpiece all these years. Here I am, 21 years later, and I’ve finally decided to give it a go, and let me say, what a masterpiece this is. Okay, let me get this out of the way: the Game ofDeus Ex. Here I am, 21 years later, and I’ve finally decided to give it a go, and let me say, what a masterpiece this is. Okay, let me get this out of the way: the Game of the Year Edition is buttery smooth. Alright, let’s talk about the game. Great music, voice acting, level design, and decent RPG elements. Got it. Here is why the game was ahead of its time. The game follows a linear story and path, but if you want to hack computer terminals, run n’ gun, or sneak through each level, it lets you. Need a code for a door? Hack a computer. Don’t have the necessary skills to hack a computer for a code? Blow it up. Don’t have any explosives? Find a vent to crawl through. It forgoes the “one size fits all” style. It’s just simply one of the best games out there. Get it, get over the dated graphics, and enjoy the game that shaped future RPGs. Expand

The greatest piece of work ever made that isn't just a game, it is a reality. I've played this three times in a row and I will always recommend it to anyone no matter what. I think Deus Ex is a bit scary in how it has predicted a lot on modern life but even though it seems a bit weird at times because of this, a lot of what is said in Deus Ex makes you question a lot about reality. There are four major things that Deus Ex predicted (from my perspective):

    - The attacks on the world trade centre on 9/11
    - Facebook's irresponsible miss-usage of data and other organisations exploiting data and using data mining algorithims
    - The worship of celebrities and opinion leaders in a modern age and how social media is used
    - The coronavirus

Now I'm not saying that I agree with everything in this game. Obviously, there is no such yip yap as the illuminati, but what I can take away from it is that there is a secret "elite" somewhere out there who could be exploiting people and we don't know about it, but I don't 100% agree with this. But I chose to play this again during the coronavirus outbreak mainly because of how Deus Ex got this right. In the game, the plot centres around a virus that has caused lockdowns across the globe and forced governments to take control of the streets in every country and crazily enough this is just about what we are seeing at the moment. This doesn't mean the "illuminati is going to take over", it's just crazy how Deus Ex got this right.

The Morpheus conversation in this game is the best scene in gaming history, I don't think there is anything better than it. Morpheus is 100% right about "humans feeling amusement" when watched. Just look at what we do today, using social media apps to post stories, post fragments of our life on there and what do people do? they judge, and what Morpheus says is that judgement is what fuels society. He is right. Then he said that after the worship of gods 100 years ago, people now desire fame and worship famous people and again he is right. Everyone follows a politician or someone famous, no matter what political ideology you hold, you'll just agree with what that famous person says 75% of the time because you worship them.

It's stuff like this that make Deus Ex an amazing game. The story is just untouchable and by far the best plot ever written, and this is a game. I've seen middle-aged people talk about this game because of how good the plot is and I wish more people knew about this game and played it.

For the gameplay however, while Deus Ex is an masterpiece, it has a steep learning curve. Don't expect to be a walk in the park, you need to really engage with what is being thrown at you. Use your skill points wisely, etc. When you get the gameplay however, you'll be playing this game for hours to see what the story has to offer you.

Most of this game is just me relating it to the real world and its just truthful in how things have progressed. Now that the game is on sale for 0.69 p (notice how masterpieces like Deus Ex and Hollow knight are usually the most feasible games) I would highly recommend it to anyone. Of course, get the revision not just for achievements and the upgrades it has, but because it makes the game less buggier and gives great optimisation for win 10.

Buy this game and experience it, you will not regret it

I don't think I've played another RPG completely through as many times as I have Deus Ex (although Mass Effect must surely be in a close second if not overtaking it). The most remarkable thing about this game is that it actually had a fairly strong story for 2000; a story you wouldn't have to be embarrassed of. The most remarkable thing about this game is that it actually had a fairly strong story for 2000; a story you wouldn't have to be embarrassed of. The detailed and thoughtful story legitimized the game as art rather than just a product. Insightful and surprisingly relevant story elements make up the majority of the story. Gameplay is also fairly interesting, although dragging a bit in areas. This usually depends on the mood of the level designers in each area - most levels are very streamlined and flow well with multiple approaches and solutions, although some can be sparse and amateurish, clashing with the semi-espionage gameplay. Music is mostly electronic - appropriate for the game, and occasionally catchy. Most people that remember this game well will recall the music when entering the Wan Chai market in Hong Kong, or the subtle beeping of the UNATCO HQ theme. The game was an appropriate length for its time, but would probably be considered short today, lasting between 10 and 25 hours depending on your involvement in the game, strategy, and your ability to overcome the objectives. There are a few problems with the game, however. Graphics were not that great, even for its time, but the economy of the art is such that the graphics engine's limited resources aren't wasted much. Level geometry tends to be fairly blocky even compared to Unreal Tournament, and especially compared to Quake 3 Arena. Although this could be tweaked if you were familiar with the Unreal engine, it was also difficult getting the game to play in resolutions much higher than 1024 x 768 or in colors higher than 16 bpp. Some of the voice acting is truly pathetic, which I must admit freely despite being an avid fan. The faux-French and Chinese accents are some of the most poorly stereotyped and absurd things I have heard out of a serious video game. Other voices are okay but JC's and Walton Simons' voices have the emotive range of a 2x4. The game didn't ship with multiplayer and it was tacked on in a later patch. Some enjoyed it, but I believe the general consensus was that it was completely awful and the game didn't lend itself to adversarial multiplayer at all. There are some ponderous gameplay elements as well, such as the concept of lock picks and electronic security hacking tools being disposable and expendable. Skill advancement is also based on exploration and objective completion rather than usage, meaning you could swim around in a sunken freighter somewhere and suddenly be an expert sniper (!?), which I thought was strange. A common dispute about the game's story among my friends is whether or not the augmentations that JC picks up are plausible or not. As a helium atom (an incredibly tiny element) is one angstrom across, and the machines described in the game are in the range of nanometers, they could only be a few thousand atoms across, tops, if the packing efficiency of the atoms and their clouds was 100%. Normally the game is more science than fiction - in fact, my bringing this up should tell you the level of expertise you would need before having to suspend disbelief - but this element of the story is somewhat clumsy. Overall, Deus Ex is probably one of the games closest to being "art" that I've played in the past 10 years. People who entered the market since then really missed something by not playing this game. Many will act like Bioshock has a masterful story even though it's essentially Doom but underwater and with dialogue (or more like monologue). If you have not played Deus Ex, then you have missed a very large portion of PC gaming and its history, perhaps equal with not playing Doom, Quake, the blockbuster Blizzard and Valve games, Wing Commander, etc. Expand

An awesome and sadly often overlooked game. The skills system, Nanotech upgrades, weapon upgrades, and the like really make it an in depth gameplay exerience, rather than just another FPS in an overcrowded genre. The storyline is also excellent and compelling. It's a pity the sequel was so watered down. This game deserved better.

One of the best and arguably most important games for the PC. Great story and gameplay that lets you choose either with stealth or brute force to complete missions. Only problems I have with it is it's ropey graphics (even at the time) and the weapons feel limp and lifeless. This is the template for so many of today's games.

You are given the chance to mould and guide your hero from humble bureacratic beginnings to a place in the annals of human history. Give Manderley a punch from me on your way up.

The game is a seamless melding of FPS and RPG. A clever twist lets you augment your character with bionic abilities, which can be found in canisters while exploring the game. Most upgrades grant one physiological ability and lock out another permanently, but the detailed inventory and character information pages let you browse the upgrades and plan ahead.

The experience based skills system lets you can choose how well you can use items and weapons, if at all. For example, if you haven't put points into rocket launchers, there are subtler methods of bypassing security systems: lockpicking, electronics and computer hacking. Packrats rejoice, this leads to a diverse array of item pickups: credit chits containing digitised money, personal organisers with codes and passwords, biological modification canisters, modification packs for weapons (capacities, fire rates, silencers, etc), lockpicks, multimeters, food or medkits for healing and even chapters from an in-game book. Usually, at least once per level, you'll get a chance to buy items from a black market trader or use your information to rummage through hidden or locked stockpiles.

Though the graphical models may look dated, all of these features create a rich gameplay experience that, in my opinion, hasn't yet been surpassed in this genre.

You are JC Denton, international United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) peace force agent fighting NFS terrorist organization in dystopian 2052 New York. New, unknown virus ("the grey death"), widespread zyme drug addiction, police curfew are the reality. You aren't just a regular person, you are nano-augmented. This means you have bionic upgrades giving you almost superhuman capabilities in some fields.

The game has some first person shooter qualities. There are multiple types of firearms including pistols, shotguns, sniper and assault rifles, experimental plasma guns, tranquilizer darts and various melee weapons including swords, batons, crowbars and knives. You can also use various grenades and explosives. But here come the RPG qualities: you are initially inexperienced with all of these weapons and as the game progresses you need to choose skills to upgrade. How about some stealth? You don't have to upgrade your fighting skills. You can upgrade swimming, lockpicking and hacking. Deus Ex is not-so-linear and usually you have more than one way to finish a level. Fighting is one option, but usually you can also crawl into ventilation ducts, climb some ladders, jump some containers and find yourself on the other side without having killed a single person (or bot).

Along with upgrading your skills, you choose and upgrade your bionic augmentations. Your game tactics will depend on implants you choose. There are 18 types of implants, but you only have 9 slots. You get to decide whether you prefer to install Speed Enhancement or Run Silent implant. Will you need Ballistic Protection (reduced bullet damage) or EMP Shield (protection from electrocution which is used by some bots)? To use your augmentations you need to use bioelectrical energy and you need to plan carefully, because it has limits.

JC Denton will discover conspiracy, traitors, surprising allies in many locations, all of them with neo-noir feel. New York City, Hong Kong (think Blade Runner), Paris, Area 51, ships, hotels, underwater labs. The plot is really long, has many surprise twists and gives you multiple choices, including three quite different endings. Music is quite cool and fits the atmosphere of the locations. Graphics... well, the game was released in 2000, so it's a little disappointing as of 2014, but if you can get over average graphics, Deus Ex is amazingly immersing.

So let me start this review by saying that Deus Ex - a computer game initially released for Microsoft Windows in june 2000 - is not, and has never been, a role-playing game, but rather a first person shooter game with RPG elements. Now that we have gotten that inconvenience out of the way we can finally start to analyze the game and the impact it had on the industry as a whole.

The story takes place in the near future with JC Denton - an agent of the counter-terrorist agency UNTACO - as the protagonist. In a world where widespread terrorism and panic are the norm, different organizations fight each other to see who gets to rule this orwellian dystopia, with the main character being forced to pick a side on this conflict he has no hopes of fully comprehending. Technological advancements were not followed by appropriate ideologies, resulting in a macabre setting where agents of the state become machines through powerful enhancements in the form of augmentations, blindly following orders for their superiors with a half-assed patriotic excuse about "protecting the homeland". In the meantime, the terrorists use a convenient modified version of the same speech in an attempt to justify the inhuman acts they too perpetuate.

In terms of gameplay, Deus Ex is primarily a stealth game with role-playing and action elements sprinkled in between, though you can play it in a "guns-blazing" fashion if you prefer that way. Players can also use a variety of abilities in order achieve the goals settled by game such as hacking ATMs and computer terminals, lockpicking doors, bypassing security devices or even destroying physical barriers with weapons.

The augmentations mentioned in the second paragraph also work their way into the core of the game. Throughout the journey players can find canisters that, when "installed", give JC a special ability that can be used at the cost of a separate energy meter to perform certain tricks that make the game a bit easier. For instance, one augmentation allows Denton to run without making noise, which can make the process of dealing with enemies up close a bit quicker. Said augmentations can also be upgraded to be more efficient with the help special containers found randomly in the world.

Gunplay, on the other hand, could have been much better. The main problem is that the developers decided to turn weapon accuracy into a stat like damage and range. Instead of making the players feel accomplished by putting time into upgrading this particular element, it makes them frustrated because their bullets are not hitting the enemies even though they are like 3 feet away from them. There also doesn't seem to be a dedicated reload button for some reason, meaning that if you have just 3 bullets left on your pistol and want to reload it, you will have to waste the rest of your precious ammo (and keep in mind that this game was released 2 years after Half-Life).

The health system, out of all things, is another interesting factor. It differs from other games by giving each limb a separate life bar, with head and torso being the two critical body parts that must be protected in order to prevent a game over. This allow for some neat and dynamic effects like not being able to jump if your both of your legs have been severely damaged. However, not being able to be choose to heal members individually with medkits is something that drastically contrasts such a deep mechanic, and I am not sure why Ion Storm decided to take this course.

What may have once been a groundbreaking game for its time is rather dated nowdays. Though Deus Ex is still very fun to play if you can stomach some rusty mechanics, it has not aged nearly as well as other critically acclaimed 5th generation games. On the other hand, time hasn't treated it as badly as something like Goldeneye 007 which, let's face it, is pretty much a mess in the current video game era. Even with its age I still consider Deus Ex a game that should be sitting in every PC gamer collection. It's got a good story, occasional good level design and overall enough gameplay variety to keep players interested.

The stealth is pretty alright, the game is pretty challenging sometimes but nothing that will make you get stuck or soft-block you. The story has some of the best and some of the worst dialogue I have ever seen. this basically summarizes the entire game, you have some amazing **** that you absolutely love but on the other hand you have things that you despise. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided it's a failure. Why Eidos decided to continue the story of Adam Jensen, which in HR was absolutely completed and didn't require any continuing. Anyway, in the Universe of Deus Ex needed a new main charact

Amazing game. Graphics are good and the gameplay is really fun but challenging.

I can see why it's very well praised: it's a very good shoter with few rpg elements and it actually gives you many choices and ways to play the game; add also a very good story behind it, with some huge places to explore too, and you get Deus ex....but I still wouldn't suggest this game for everyone. Let me clear this: I enjoyed it, I loved it to the end, but It has some huge problemsI can see why it's very well praised: it's a very good shoter with few rpg elements and it actually gives you many choices and ways to play the game; add also a very good story behind it, with some huge places to explore too, and you get Deus ex....but I still wouldn't suggest this game for everyone. Let me clear this: I enjoyed it, I loved it to the end, but It has some huge problems that makes this game very"old:I hated how the game is based on "Trial & Error", which will make you destroy the autosave button in order to finish a mission. Yes the AI is buggy, but sometimes they are just too strong: they were able to see me, from the other side of the map, hiding in pure darkness and down below a street...WOW, buggy AI right? It might be buggy, but sometimes they could see me (and HEAR even while sneaking) too well. And this might be nitpicking, but I would have loved a map of the area: they are HUGE and it's very hard to see where you have to go without a map, making you lose the way. Ok, the rant is over: I give it a 8 mainly because it IS good, but to me it's just aged: stealth games have evolved for the better and this game, even though created a standard for stealth shooters, has basically lost it's innovation: give it a try though if you can surpass the flaws and, in general, if you don't agree with me. Deus Ex - a title that has a huge cult following. Although I don't fully understand all the reasons that led to it, my review of this game is still going to be positive. / The fact is, the game's graphics were outdated even at the time of its creation. But surprisingly enough, this fact didn't bother me much during singleplayer experience (also, I am not exactly into top-notch graphics atDeus Ex - a title that has a huge cult following. Although I don't fully understand all the reasons that led to it, my review of this game is still going to be positive. / The fact is, the game's graphics were outdated even at the time of its creation. But surprisingly enough, this fact didn't bother me much during singleplayer experience (also, I am not exactly into top-notch graphics at all times, I still like retro games if there are other aspects that I like about those titles). The multiplayer, on the other hand, oh yeah, that is a slightly different story... I remember that it was hard to keep a straight face in situations like when your own teammates got poisoned by gas grenades... / One of the main strengths of the game are the possibilities that lie in front of you. Stealth vs. action is divided into a lot of smaller options you can choose from. You can kill everything in sight, stun your opponents or put them to sleep, avoid them altogether by choosing alternative paths, use not only weapons and tools, but also augmentations to your advantage... These elements really made the game fun to play. Nothing forced you into choosing one particular solution (e.g. stealth is better than action - make love, not war - DX: HR, anyone?), so you could enjoy the game the way you wanted to, without any penalties (at least I don't remember any). / The augmentation system is generally a nice idea and I like the fact that you have to choose between several upgrades to determine which one you want to install on that particular body part. Some augmentations however I found kind of obsolete and I think I didn't use them once during the whole game. You can also invest points into various skills to help you further during the gameplay (weapon use, hacking, lockpicking and... swimming - OMG, that was kind of obsolete too). And yeah, the hacking and lockpicking are very primitive, on the other hand, if I have to choose between tiresome minigames and beeping multitools, I pick the second option, thankyouverymuch. / The game is definitely... long. I dropped out twice (once in the ship area and once in France), but returned after several months and I am glad I did. There are other titles that deserved to be dropped instantly and I didn't do it (*facepalm*). I liked the fact there were numerous locations and environments to be visited and explored, although some of them were more boring than the others. But, the longer the gameplay is, the better, sure - phenomenon of a 3 hour-long games that cost 40 bucks is NOT COOL. / Deus Ex is generally praised because of its storyline, which is captivating and original at first. After some time, it gets a little confusing and I had the feeling as if someone wanted to incorporate all the existing "conspiracy theories" he could find into the game's story. Maybe less would be more in this case. But not a huge issue for me. / Also, the music definitely deserves mentioning, there are a LOT of tracks, each location has a music of its own, so a huge amount of work went into this. I think it was worth it and the soundtrack is a nice bonus to the overall experience. Voice-acting is not so good, but for me, it provided an amusing aspect, so thanks for that. / I must add that sometimes I felt like I was playing some Star Wars game because of that nanosword, which was strangely addictive. At first, it was good against greasels, then I was overpowered by the dark side and I used it against almost everything, eh.... / The ending (one of the few that are available) wasn't disappointing and the game offers great re-playability not only to experience other endings, but to try different things and approaches. / I'm not giving this game a full score like most of the people I see on the last page - it's not the best game I ever played and it has its flaws. But I admit it's one of the better ones (not in the term of graphics, of course) and it can be seen that a lot of effort was put into making some elements as good as possible, which is something that deserves recognition. Unfortunately, nowadays I don't see many modern titles with a "heart", and Deus Ex definitely is a game that has a "nanoheart", sometimes beating slowly, sometimes rapidly, always being cold, but yes, it's a heart nonetheless. Open FPS RPG that doesn't feel like either side is tacked on. Nice dystopian cyberpunk atmosphere and some sweet music. A few balance issues and terrible voice acting.

Overall i can see why the game is praised as one of the best FPS of all time. The story is very good, the RPG elements are implemented well, but it is overwhelming, However the game is very hard for new players and i wouldnt be surprised if you use cheats the first time you play through. It is a good game but if you have played Half life you will be dissapointed. The graphics are outdated but not horrible. The AI are pretty good. Controls are not that great but not horrible. If you like shooting / adventure games ,get this game you wont be dissapointed.

The story is interesting. The Ai intelligence is bad. They are foolish, but expectable for a 2000's game. I never see so much cats, rats and homeless in one game. There is praiseworthy skill system for a 2000's RPG. This game is fun.

Oftentimes brilliant, sometimes frustrating, and always riveting, "Deus Ex" could be game-of-the-year material if not for its many glaring flaws.
  3. It is, as a game, everything you could ask for... and it's absolutely a blast to play.
