This game can give you what Cyberpunk 2077 can't: a great story. The gameplay is not bad at all. It's definitely a must-play.

I loved to Kill people with the Blade arms when I was younger.

I just don't give this game a 10 because it has RPG mechanics, which I thought was rubbish! other than that the game is pretty cool it has amazing ragdoll physics also has a lot of blood and exciting executions and Insane gameplay reminiscent of R6 Vegas

It's okay, at best. It's visually pretty dull, with dark and yellow-tinted cities and office buildings making up 100% of the experience, but not in an interesting cyberpunk way in an empty playground way. The stealth gameplay is okay but overall pretty simple and dull, gunplay feels limp, and the main story has very little of substance going on. Ultimately I did not enjoy it very much.

The main conflict of the story every intrigue spinning around is "are implants good or dangerous?" Not a difficult choice, but look what developers did there. They actually made a strong point for every point of view which reflects in actions of main heroes. Bravo! Now about small pluses: Main hero looks and talks badass! Cool close fight and other animations which integrity I desire in lots of games. Disadvantages be: unlegible vague graphics with poor choice of colors (yellow everywhere, either Detroit or China or else), Character with full HP dies falling from the height of a first floor without an upgrade, shots in zoom of automatic weapons is too bright that you can't see anything behind the fire which makes it bad weapon on last difficulty (because no crosshair on last dif.). Only the pistol has armor breaking upgrade besides the plasma gun that you'll not see until the end, which makes pistol the best weapon here. Loading screens and transitions between the locations on lift are ve-e-ery long like in the previous chapter. Also the story and text on computers or books is boring. Only the ending is cool. Oh and the system of convincing someone is interesting. I had fun time Deus Ex, thank you. Expand

I love the first Deus ex! This game isn't terrible - but **** it's bland! The narrative whilst compelling isn't anything groundbreaking or unique. Also the PC port is kinda rubbish. I've been getting such horrible shutter problems with no available fixes. **** been annoying. I really don't believe that this game is worth playing through. It's a shame because Deus Ex is a great franchise.

Overall, this is a great game. I wanted to play a Deus-Ex game, but didn't didn't want to play an older game like the original, and wasn't interested in the unfinished Mankind Divided. So this really hit the sweet spot for me.

I have a few minor complaints, but nothing I'm going to knock a star off for.

Complaint #1: The game is YELLOW. I mean, everything is yellow. It doesn't look bad, and TBH I didn't even notice it until someone mentioned it to me, but once you see it there's no unseeing it. Fortunately, there is a mod that makes it less yellow.

Complaint #2: There were a few levels that were possibly a little too hard, even on the easiest setting. This is subjective, though, and I felt a sense of accomplishment after beating them. Also, I'm not the world's best Deus-Ex player, so it might have just been me not being very good at the game. This is very minor, though, and I never had a second thought about finishing the game.

Seriously, there's some 200 IQ moments to be had here, where the game definitely makes you feel smarter than you are. Or on the other hand, makes you feel as dumb as a brick, depending on how you handled the situation.

Combat wise the game is actually pretty decent but the stealth definitely shines and is borderline amazing, though the occasional horsesh*t AI does hold it back a bit. Still, it's a damn fine game with an interesting story, great immersive sim elements, and a kickass soundtrack. It's just a shame that some d*ckface degenerate decided that boss fights should be added to this. Every time those came up my mouse teetered on the .5 star button. Also since I'm complaining, whoever added **** mines that have a 3,000 foot detection radius and don't come with a disarming tutorial, f*ck you.

CDPR y'all are some mid smokers for turning CP2077 into "Neon GTA: Scuffed Edition". Eidos already gave you the blueprint in 2011 (Except for the ending, which of course is pretty much the only thing CDPR took after).

The cover-based combat is challenging and plentiful, and some of the levels are very atmospheric, but there are also constant irritations. Sneaking around knocking out guards one by one and hiding their bodies in the ventilation ducts is fun, as is watching enemies through the walls with your augmented vision and then popping out from behind cover to shoot them in the head. Alas, you have to trudge through lots and lots of tedious exposition to get to the fun bits.

The protagonist, Adam Jensen, is humourless and unlikeable, as are all the other characters in the game, so it's hard to care about their interminable story. Although some of the voice acting is good, some of the writing is really quite bad and sometimes sounds suspiciously like it's been translated from another language, like when Jensen says that an incompetent gangster "can barely tie his own shoelaces without tripping all over himself". Characters are introduced with whom Jensen supposedly has a long history, but since we weren't there for that history, they all just come across as catty. There are some boss fights, but the bosses get no more than a cursory introduction, and most of the fights with them feel like a slog. The ending is very weak: choose one of 4 boring videos made up of cheap stock footage to watch, then credits.

Character animations look good during combat, but up close all the character models resemble shiny plastic puppets and constantly flail their limbs unnervingly. Watching the death of one character (who we only met an hour previously, but who we're supposed to care about) was unintentionally hilarious, like a deleted scene from Team America.

The technology of the game's world is strangely anachronistic. This game came out in 2011, but smartphones don't seem to feature in its vision of 2027. People are getting their bodies augmented and Jensen even has a constant audiovisual feed to his employers (although sometimes they sort of forget about this) but everyone, including Jensen, has to go to their desktop PC to read their emails, and lots of people don't bother locking their computers. People carry 'pocket secretaries' that are basically pagers and which hold a maximum of 4 messages on them, and everyone is constantly sending each other passwords and keycodes. There are old-timey news stands, but they dispense newspapers on LCD screens so... newspapers are like single-use iPads now?

Homes and offices have computers that you can either hack into, or log into with passwords found on other computers or on those 'pocket secretaries'. These provide some backstory, but I soon stopped caring what was in them apart from door codes, which save you from having to hack locked doors. The hacking minigame is terrible, your success being far too heavily reliant on luck. The occasional 'Conversation' mini-game is also dull and confusing, and it's hard to know how much your choices actually affect the story, if at all. I've only played through DXHR once (which was enough), but I doubt that any of my choices could have made any difference to the overarching plot, driven as it is by decisions that Jensen makes with no input from the player.

Sometimes it feels like the game is just messing with you. If you try using a takedown move on a boss, the boss will overpower and kill you. One cutscene clearly shows your aircraft's parachute fail to deploy and the aircraft crash into the sea, but you start the next section on the helipad anyway, with no mention of how you got out of the sea.

You can drag unconscious guards around, contorting their ragdoll bodies to fit into ventilation ducts, and they won't wake up - but if one of their buddies comes and shakes them by the shoulder, they get right back up into the fray as if nothing happened, even if your non-lethal takedown clearly broke their arm. These ventilation ducts offer shortcuts around levels, which NPCs can neither enter nor comprehend; they will watch you go into one, fire at the vent you went into and then just assume you've gone, until you pop up at another vent and the peekaboo process starts again.

Some things about the game just seem poorly implemented. For instance, it took me a while to realise that the (controller-only) quick-selection wheel highlights a primary weapon, a secondary weapon AND a consumable as you go round it, rather than just the one you end on - and accidentally drinking an alcoholic drink that temporarily blurs your vision can easily get you killed. Dead and unconscious bodies remain searchable even after you have looted them, meaning that if you take down a group of enemies their bodies can cover up weapons that they drop, preventing you from picking the weapons up without laboriously rearranging the bodies. It's strange design choices like that, that make the game feel rushed and untested, even 10 years after its release.

You can go a stealthy route, you can get robots, your augmentations, and explosives to do all the work for you, or you can treat it like a good ol' fashioned shooter. The skill trees and the items in the game supplement all these playstyles so none of them really feel left out. It was immensely satisfying to go an entire mission without being spotted or setting off the perfect trap to be able to slip past.

The hub worlds of Detroit and Hengsha Island were great too. They were full of environmental storytelling. I don't want to spoil too much but just know that the level and world design is fantastic. The side quests had some difficult choices to make, and did a good job of showing how the world is at the time of the game.

The main story was entertaining from start to finish, keeping you interested throughout the game. The one complaint I had was the chapter that was originally was added DLC (the Missing Link) in the original version but it was integrated into the main game in the Director's Cut. It personally worsened the pacing for me, but it wasn't such a huge deal as it was interesting story wise. The ending of the main story left me satisfied and was pretty open to sequels.

The characters were good too. The protagonist comes off as a jerk sometimes but I liked him towards the end. All the other characters had distinct personalities, and many of them were symbols for ideas they pushed, which was cool.

I'd say the game has aged very well. It's totally worth playing, even today. If you're curious, you can play this game without playing the original Deus Ex.

Deus Ex is a boring game because there is barely any action in the game. The visuals are terrible. The character models look like they were made in 2009. The cutscenes are in 720p. Almost all the colors in this game are orange and yellow. If you want to play a good first-person stealth game, play one of the Dishonored games.

I did enjoy it, unlike Mankind Divided that I can't even be bothered finishing.

So that's why I rate it averagely, however it's the kind of game I'd play when they have at least some interesting aspects and this one does, it's how the story unfolds (and generially, I'm a sci-fi geek). I would like to experience the same kind of gameplay/story with more modern game mechanics and decent hacking minigame.

Solid game, while it does feel dumbed down compared to the original Deus Ex, it still shines among modern titles with the gameplay that really lets you do things your way. And shooting stuff feels just as satsfying as stealthy approach. All that in a nice cyberpunk asthetic with good music and story that might be a bit lacking, but its interesting enough to keep you invested.

There's actual discussion of subjects that wouldn't even get a mention in most other AAA games, and the story and characters are more mature than big budget titles usually have. And this is one of the game's strongest points. What also sets the game apart are the visuals. It tries to evoke a cyberpunk renaissance atmosphere and does that well, with the caveat of heavily abusing the brown-yellow color scheme. (The Director's Cut seems to have toned that down, though.)

Unfortunately, the gameplay and the story aren't as strong. It shows that the game didn't have the most experienced team behind it; it was actually the first game Eidos Montreal worked on and released. As a result, it doesn't entirely live up to expectations set by the Deus Ex name.

The game is, naturally, often compared to its acclaimed predecessor. It couldn't ever hope to be as deep as the first game, of course, for the simple reason that the standards and focus of modern developers do not allow for such depth anymore. But this is also the reason, as I said, that it's still amazing how far along the true Deus Ex path they actually got. Since a Deus Ex game has to accommodate several play styles, the developers couldn't help but attempt to develop satisfying stealth, FPS, cover, dialogue, AI and skill systems. That seems to have been too much for them to handle, but surprisingly enough, they pulled it off in a more or less commendable way. The shooting can be stiff and wonky, the cover too sticky, the stealth too easy or unsatisfying, and the story may get fragmented and inconsistent, losing its focus as it nears the end of the game - the ending itself being the game's lowest point alongside the tacked-on boss fights (which were, again, fixed in the Director's Cut). But overall, Human Revolution is a worthwhile experience, especially as a prequel to the original.

Definitely worth the deus ex name and it is a great reboot of the franchise. It has the rpg elements though I wouldn't call it an rpg. It is more of an action shooter with augmentations. The story is what gets it to a 10 out of 10. It does have multiple endings with the secret societies like the original which makes it a deus ex.

Eg. trying the game just without picking the "cloak" augment can dramatically alter the way you play. Or instead try a "non-lethal" playthrough. There are some small quirks in the story but the universe is so rich, so well studied and fleshed out. Adam as a character, the main NPCs, the backdrop. In the beginning the graphics is embarrassing, not only the models, but the animations also. The world is not very credible, because the dialogues are so simple. A CEO of a corporation is talking much differently than in the game for example. The dialogue system is like in Mass Effect: very simple, click almost everything, you dont need any brain, just sometimes you need to decide, and for that there are some augmentations, haha.
The simple dialogue system fits to the low difficulty and simple gameplay. The game is not for adults, but for kids, so it is not like the classic Deus Ex 1.
A bit later you can make jokes about the bad AI, because it is embarrassing.
There is one thing I like in this game: the theme of the story is very interesting, but it is not written for adults.

As a result I couldnt immerse in the world, and I stopped to play after about 15 hours. This happens not so often, because I prefer to know what happens in the end.

And many hours spent with my finger over the quick save/reload buttons didn't change anything. That could be me. But the stealth play just doesn't feel smooth and rewarding, like in a better stealth game, like say, Thief: The Dark Project.

There's so much reading material in this game, and so little of it is at all interesting. I really enjoyed reading the datapads in the original game, each one would provide some useful information or interesting tidbits of flavour. Not so here. Pity, because hacking is pretty fun in my opinion, but the only reward is XP. So it feels gamey when I just hack every damn thing to get the xp, with no real in game motivation. It ruins the immersion.

I didn't care about the story and by the end of the game I was just playing to finish the damn thing. I think it was going for some kind of profound moral dilemma, but I found the ending pretty yawn inducing. I did not care to explore the other endings. I always felt somehow as though the interesting part of the story was happening somewhere else. The game would hint at interesting things taking place in the world, but didn't really expose me to it. It was very much 'tell not show.' All I got was drab offices to shoot boring guards in, or to scuttle about ventilation ducts in

The characters are distinctly drab for the most part, a couple of them are okay. David Sarif is pretty memorable as the roguish cyber don with dubious morals. But mostly, there's no chance of feeling anything for any of them, or being interested in their plights. I can't remember what the girlfriend was called.

The most fun I had with DE:HR was around the time that my early augmentations started kicking in, galavanting around Detroit nabbing bent cops and screwing with augmented street gangs and stuff with my newly minted superpowers. A more fun game might have focused more on street level cybercop stuff, and we could forget about the lamely executed grand conspiracy stuff.

Levels feel rather cramped and labyrinthine. I found navigating pretty annoying. They also feel pretty linear.

Nothing like as good as the classic original game, and I'm not sure why this game has such a good regard or metacritic score. It's interesting to note that the sequel, Deus Ex Mankind Divided seemed much less successful.

The Director’s Cut Edition adds some visual tweaks and re-designed boss-battle environments. The Missing Link DLC is included, folded into the main story campaign.

+ Story with serious themes. Starts with a literal bang and is paced well.
+ Relevant side-quests that can contain important backstory.
    + Choices matter.
    + Voice-acting is excellent.
+ Superb soundtrack by Michael McCann. Synth-orchestral sound with a techno feel at times.
+ Multiple ways to play (with the right upgrades). Stealth? Shooter? Fall safely from any height? Punch walls (discovering new passages)? Up to you. High replayability.
+ Multiple level paths. You’ll end up at the same objective, but there are at least two paths to get there (and there are frequently more).
+ The Director’s Cut features completely revamped boss-battle environments. Stealth builds are now completely legit.
+ Addictive hacking mini-game. It’s over in seconds, too, so it doesn’t slow the gameplay down much.
+ Individual weapons. Decent selection, and they all look and feel unique.
+ Well-optimized, and not resource-intensive. Locked 60fps @1440 on an RX 470 with everything maxed except Depth of Field (which is an effect I dislike, so it was turned off). Back in the day, it played fine on the desktop APU I used to have (using the integrated graphics). If you have a low-spec computer and are looking for a good game to play, Human Revolution should be near the top of your list.

+/- Not an “open world.” Rather, a few small hub areas that have some side-missions. Allows for more focused level design, but can feel claustrophobic at times.
+/- The Missing Link DLC is included in the main campaign (right after leaving China for the second time). You lose all of your upgrades once this section of the game begins (though you get them back once this section is complete, PLUS any upgrades you accumulated). Generally, the insertion of the Missing Link DLC slows down the later part of the game, but narratively it makes complete sense. And Commander Burke is a great adversary.
+/- Graphics are fair. Light-shafts and shadows look great, but skyboxes look low-res and facial expressions are wooden. Edges are jaggy even with anti-aliasing cranked up (down-sampling is the best solution).

    - Mouths frequently don’t sync properly during conversations.
    - UI doesn’t scale properly. The HUD is tiny at 1440p; I can’t imagine it at 4k.
    - Some odd controls with kb + m. Right click and hold to enter cover. Iron sights is a toggle of the middle mouse button.
    - Predictable, stupid enemy AI. Get even a few upgrades, and ghosting levels becomes incredibly easy.

Even with those few drawbacks, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the very best stealth / role-playing / action hybrids. It belongs to none of those genres, but takes the best elements of each and adds in an emotional story whose morals exist in planes of grey. A game to play through, reflect upon, and play again. 9/10

Really hard choice of GOTY 2011 between this and Skyrim. An excellent immersive sim, a worthy sequel to the original Deus Ex. Ignore the haters, this game is very good. Why this is so underrated on metacritic i will never understand.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best stealth game OR rampage shooter.
You can get through this game with every playstyle you like.
Rampaging with no mercy. Non-fatal weapons/melee attacks. Or passing all enemies without them even knowing. For almost every situation there is a smarter way to go than just running through wiht no brain. Great graphic and immersive gameplay, with lot's of side missions.

Deus EX is my favorite game. Fantastic writing and gameplay.

    Pros

    + Storytelling

    + world

    Cons

    - Dialogue wheel, I prefer to see texts in sentences to select.

    - Inventory management for item combination is terrible.

played the beta build. Immediately after beating it, i pre ordered. Haven't regretted that decision once and i don't think i will. This game is bloody brilliant in every single way. Great story, great dialogue, great graphics on pc maxed out and at 60 fps. You cant beat that. A true successor to the original deus! pc gaming is still alive

There are only a few games this year we suggest to 16-yrs old gamers and their fathers together. Human Revolution for sure is a Game of the Year nominee. [Oct 2011]

So despite the odds being stacked against it, Eidos Montreal accomplished the impossible and brought us a Deus Ex in the true sense of the word, probably the best one that we could have hoped for considering the current "requirements" for being commercially successful nowadays.

A worthy successor to one of the greatest games ever. It offers a lot of choice on many levels and feels like an RPG from years past - in a very good way. One of the best, if not the best game of 2011. [Oct 2011]
