First of all... great artwork, and a great theme and idea. Sadly, it's just poorly executed. Bad director I'd have to say.

I was very disappointed with this game, and was so looking forward to it. It had great reviews, and an interesting looking trailer, so I'm not sure why I disliked it so much. The voice acting was OK, but the director of the sound wasn't too good. It's as though they didn't have a firm understanding of the English language, or the context of the words they were speaking. Where some lines were questions, they spoke them as statements and vice versa.

I think the biggest problem was that I didn't like the main character. Generally, he simply wasn't a nice person. I didn't see anything at all that made me want him to succeed in his quest. Imagine Guybrush Threepwood, who only wanted to save Elaine because she was hot and could get him to an Island full of riches... that's it. Now imagine him screwing over every single person on his way, and having no likeable characters. No Wally, no Haggis McMutton, no Murray, heck, no LeChuck!

Plot holes, loop hopes, and plenty of bugs. I managed to activate the same cut-scene 4 times, each showing me succeeding at a particular moment in the game. At one point, German subtitles appeared, and at another point, the main character spoke a series of sentences, rather than the correct one, showing that the audio file wasn't correctly edited.

Point and click adventure games are all about the puzzles, and these were just messy. No real direction. I took a break from it for a day, came back to it and had no idea what I was doing. I managed to start a conversation with a man, asking for help on a puzzle I managed to finish a few hours previously. Luckily they had a 'skip' button for many of the most bizzare puzzles, but in all honestly, the majority of the time I just used a walk-through, and that's unheard of for most games I've played through, and I usually try not to, but some of these were so complicated and strange, that I had the choice of trying every possible combination of objects in my inventory with objects or just use a walkthrough. There was very little in the way of logic.

The most disgusting thing was that the game just ends. Again, take Monkey Island for example. Imagine the game just stopping half way through, with no result with a "The End...?"

I will not be buying the second game, and am so angry that I bought this one. It confuses me so much that it's getting such great reviews. I grew up on point and click games, so as I said at the beginning, I am so disappointed.

Tries to follow on from the old Lucasarts adventures and to a large extent succeeds, sadly the jokes are a little too obvious at times. But it's good harmless point and click fun with well defined characters.

    Pros:
    -Beautiful art style
-Quirky characters Cons: -Solutions to puzzles can be very farfetched which, while keeping in context with the game, still makes it hard for some (like myself) to figure out how to solve them. -Main character can get annoying -You have to pay really close attention to dialogue because there are often hints where you may not expect them to be. Conclusion:

Conclusion: I really want to like this game more than I did. I like the world and I like the tone of it but the frustration of the puzzles had me seeking walkthroughs more than I'd like to admit. I would suggest playing the game with a notepad. Taking notes on every little thing you see and every little thing the characters say because usually there is a hint contained in them.

There are a quite a few of things to like here. The graphics are classic cartoony 2D done great, the setting is great, the humour is funny (although lame points exist), the UI works well, even the plot is fun to follow and has a nice spanner in the works near the end. Most importantly, although this one's hardly a nosebleeder, is that the game doesn't spoonfeed you everything. Granted, this is always been a significant part of the genre, but games of today are have made me wary. That's not to say that the game leaves you hanging, it just tells you what to do in subtle ways.

One thing I'm feeling weird about is voice acting. Everyone else seems to do a decent job, but the main character just sounds... offbeat. Then again his personality is that of a jackass, so I'm assuming that's at least partially intentional. Some of the robo voices in this game are hilarious too. My first impression with some of the music tracks was that they felt a bit out of place too, but in the end I actually ended up liking them a lot.

As for the bad things... there isn't really anything outstanding. The game is maybe a bit short, but given the genre I'll let that slide. Perhaps the biggest flaw of it is that there are simply too few interactable flavour items AND actual quest items. The ones you have see plenty of use. This is something I'd normally think of as an indie dev issue, but it's not really like the other elements in the game suffer from this.

Deponia is a game filled with soul, that any fan of the point'n'click genre should try out. It's not as good as the classics, but who says it has to be?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One could arguably dub this as a steam punk Monkey Island. The game is building on humor, unconventional, but still more or less reasonable solutions to puzzles and loads of dialogue to create and maintain the atmosphere.
Even though the main character is an obnoxious egomaniac this didn't disturb me much since they made it clear in about the first 10 seconds of the game. The other characters are fairly good with a few exceptions I found Toni a bit overdoing her part (seriously there is no reason behind giving home and food to your ex who you utterly hate from the bottom of your heart in my book) and the secretary in the Mayor's office is getting annoying fairly quick.
I was a bit disappointed with the fact that the main game was taking place in the town and the other two scenes went really fast once you got there, but the story ran smooth and had its moments (even though quite predictable in general).
The artwork deserves some extra praise it is really well executed and the music is pretty good too. If you like adventure games and you are into steam punk (or at least one of the two) then by all means do pick up this game and keep in mind that there are a few others in the series. A few others that I am now interested to try as well.

Surprised that anyone would really have a problem with this game. I think there's been enough videos and summary available to steer people clear that didn't enjoy the sort of characters and game play/humor this game offers. A perfect start of what would be the perfect trilogy if it wasn't for the ending. The three games are great, the characters, the story, the art, the puzzles... But be ready to feel completely devastated in the end of all of it.

This game has wonderful graphic. And thats it. Puzzles are sometimes illogical and quite hard. That might be my problem only, I am lazy thinker ;)
Story is pretty boring and is not very well motivating player to advance. The worst thing is main character, so unfriendly and unlovable guy...

The game looks good and overall is an enjoyable play. It took out much of the frustrating aspects of point and click games (you can double click to instant travel to many places in the game, 95% of the objects in the game are used at some point, no challenges involve a time limit even when it seems like it should, etc). It shows how a point and click can be very simple; however, it also takes away the very thing that really makes these types of games unique: trivial discoveries. There are a handful of things that you won't need to interact with, but it still is far short of the standard assortment of useless objects to observe and play with that I expected. It takes away from the humor and from the puzzles too. When you walk in a room and only 2-3 things can be interacted with it really simplifies any puzzles in that location. This game felt more like a light version of what a point and click should be. I still enjoyed it, and by the end I realized that it had a more than decent story to it. It could have been much better though. Expand

This game was very enjoyable. I had only two issues with the game. First, the inventory was a little tricky to use. It sometimes takes a few clicks on an item to properly select it. Second, the Organon voices are very loud and grating. You might not want to play at high volume.

A nicely done adventure game. Unfortunately, it is so illogical in places that it is hardly fun. Daedalic's typical humor also doesn't come across as well as in other games.

The only downside i found about it is bugs, will explain : some times you get stuck in a room and not able to move to another room... fixable by loading a saved game before it happened. (made me remake a new game at first because i didn't know this bug is in the game.)
don't think that i ever spent so much time playing a single game as i did with this one.
really loved this game and can recommend it to others.

Giving it a solid 8 (would have bin 9 without bugs)
This bugs are not present in the follow up games of this series.

Some of the puzzles try to be cute and absurd rather than logical, which make them hard to solve other than trial and error. There are some puzzles where the cue to the player is not obvious enough. There are also parts of the game where it is not clear what you are supposed to do next. For example, in many adventure games if you talk to characters in the game, they will tend to point you toward your next task. The characters in Deponia will tell you tons of jokes and wierd stories (I clicked through a lot of it), but 90% of the dialog has nothing to do with helping you finish the game. There are some out-and-out bugs, including a minigame that was flat broken. I used a walk-through more for this game than any other I have ever played (that includes Myst, Riven, Siberia I/II, Machinarium, The Longest Journey, etc). The hero of the story was a little too detestable to be funny. The artwork, style, and creativity were all there for this to be an excellent game, but somehow the developers did not learn from other great games of this genre. The result is a disappointment.
