Though a few artistic and technical blemishes stifle the immersion, Demons Never Lie remains an engaging if not particularly challenging narrative adventure.

It combines puzzles with a visual novel type choice system to the dialogue that is paired with a great story. It brought out the best of me and the worst of me. The main characters life is a roller coaster that was pretty realistic in that people can and will do many good and bad things in a lifetime. The game does a great job balancing humor with horror, happiness with sadness. The atmosphere is superb. You play as John who is given the opportunity to relive parts of his life after he dies in exchange for his soul. This sets off a butterfly effect as it impacts those close to him creating various problems. You will have to solve various puzzles all of which made sense which is all I ask of puzzles. There is no voice acting but I didn’t mind. The soundtrack was awesome, I have even found myself humming parts to it at work. The graphics are pixelized so whether that is you’re cup of tea or not will tell you if you’ll like them. I will say that they did a better job of adding detail to a pixel game than most do. I could easily tell people apart and the world was well done. The camera angles could have been better, I would have liked to be zoomed out just a bit more or been able to use the WASD keys to move.

I played Demons Never Lie on Linux. It never crashed on me and I encountered no bugs. There is just one setting for graphics options aside from picking your resolution. There is strangely only vsync options on the highest setting not the lower ones. The game uses the Unity engine. Alt-Tab didn’t work for me. There is no manual saving. Each area usually has a place you can go to save your game. There is just the one save slot that gets overwritten each time. The game takes up 1194MB of disk space. During game play my GPU usage was 36-88%; my VRAM usage was 714-1099MB; my CPU usage was 4-10%; my RAM usage was 2.4-3.2GB; and my frame rate was 140-144 ( I used Vsync). The game obviously recognized and could utilize my 144hz monitor.

I can easily recommend Demons Never Lie. It is the best game I have played in almost a year. That isn’t guessing. I went back over my games played and checked. This game is awesome. If you enjoy puzzle games that have a good story then look no further. I finished the game in 3 hours 43 minutes. I paid $14.04 for it on Kickstarter and it is easily worth that and more. $25 would still be worth it.
