    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Notice that this will be a somewhat long and thorough review. Because I have a lot to say about both Chapters of this game. Some spoilers ahead.

    I just finished my first playthrough of this, going for a sort of 'pacifist' route. Although I have not yet tried to find all the secrets in the game, I feel like my experience of beating the game/'chapter' qualifies me to write a review.

    Some context first. I've beaten Deltarune Chapter 1 last year, including the secret boss, as well as all of the routes in Undertale in the past. I installed Deltarune Chapter 2 and didn't bother to use my Chapter 1 save, which I think I still have stored somewhere. I was told that it isn't necessary to have beaten Chapter 1 or have a save, so I skipped a re-play of Chapter 1 and went straight to Chapter 2. I don't know if Chapter 1 items and money carry over to Chapter 2 and make things easier, but I didn't seem to need them.

    I noticed that the naming screen for Chapter 2 was the same as the one from Undertale. Rather than Deltarune Chapter 1's 'character creation' menu, which basically just trolls and wastes time of the player for the sake of some kind of plot element from Undertale. This change was welcome.

    The opening of Chapter 2 was ok enough. Although it seems to hand-wave away what happened at the end of Chapter 1. I get that maybe this dreamy sequence was supposed to seem slightly horrifying with the 'NOOOOooo!' scream by Toriel, but I found it rather funny. It gets turned into Kris having left a knife in a pie that Toriel had baked or something, which is a 'whatever' moment.

    Anyway, after this the game is almost exactly the same as Chap. 1 until arriving at school again, which is understandable. Kris falls asleep throughout most of class and some other characters comment that he resembles a corpse. There is clearly something going on here that the author is hinting at, but even by the end of Chapter 2 it hasn't yet been very well explained. It's plot fodder for the next Chapter at any rate.

    Something I'd like to point out that is a noticeable graphical difference from the old Chapter 1 release is that Susie's sprites seem to be somewhat changed, most noticeably her facial expressions. She appears more fierce in Chapter 2. This isn't a bad thing. I remember Susie's art looking slightly 'better' in Chapter 1, though.

    Well, we get to the 'Dark World' and the game turns noticeably longer than Chapter 1. Regarding the first Chapter, disregarding the optional secret boss which is a significant grind, I beat that chapter in three hours or so. Chapter 2 took about eight hours to win, including about an hour of mostly optional dialogue at the end. There were a LOT more cutscenes in Chapter 2 than 1. Although most cutscenes were fine, there were some I found myself quickly skimming through the dialogue as fast as possible to get through. It was becoming tedious to read characters prattling on about dreamy nonsense that I find hard to care about and doesn't seem to matter much even in-universe.

    Here we come to what I consider one of the major problems of both Chapters 1 and 2 of Deltarune compared to Undertale, and which seems to have gotten significantly worse in Chapter 2. Deltarune over-does the dreamy nonsense. There is little suspension of disbelief, the game shoves it in your face that this is something like a dream or nightmare. Even the Hometown feels like a layer of empty abstraction on top of the Undertale universe. Of course, it literally is an alternate universe. Adding these dreamy 'Dark World' sequences on top of that feels too meaningless. It feels like the author was trying too hard to be meta or philosophical or such.

    What gameplay there was in the Dark World between the high amount of cutscenes was ok. I only bought some items and never had to grind. Sometimes I had to reload saves a few times during the harder fights, but the gameplay was smooth enough and had almost no frustrating moments. The game's puzzles were forgettable. Some puzzles were very easy and at any rate I never got stuck on any of them for long, which I suppose is a good thing.

    The game turned into a quasi-1990s style fighting game at the last boss. It feels like the game's author was trolling players with this.

    Overall I mostly liked the art style and the music of the Dark World, and the computerized theme. This theme had a nice weirdness about it, pleasantly strange but not too off-putting.

    I encountered zero technical issues with crashes or bugs in the game, so that's another plus in the game's favor.

    I liked Undertale, I enjoyed Deltarune chapter 1 and I absolutely LOVED Deltarune chapter 2.
    The art, the humor, the absolute banger of a soundtrack this game has.
    I was smiling most of the time during my playthrough of this game.

    It feels like every single one of my complaints with Chapter 1. Toby and his team couldn't have done a better job. Music is fantastic, characters are memorable, mechanics are fun, story is interesting - it's emotional where it needs to be and funny when its appropriate.

    The wait was worth it, Deltarune Chapter 2 continues to build up with the foundations of Undertale and Deltarune Chapter 1 and it performs it wonderfully, the whole game i had a smile on my face and it didn't go away until the very end.

    And the soundtrack, man did was it a banger to listen to!     You cannot rate DR without comparing it to UT. It is inextricably tied into the lore and universe of UT, but it    Deltarune Ch 2 rests on the same laurels that made Ch 1 good: Quirky characters, funny situational comedy, bangin soundtrack. It also, sadly, commits all the same sins as it's predecessor, making it another mediocre entry in what could be an incredible episodic series.

    You cannot rate DR without comparing it to UT. It is inextricably tied into the lore and universe of UT, but it continually dances a thin line between being it's own story and being a continuation/spin-off of UT. The vast majority of the juiciest lore for both Chapters 1 and 2 happen in the last 5 minutes of each game. The rest of the game is hours of pointless battles and faffing about. No significant questions being answered. No intrigue being developed. The mercy battle mechanic is there as a vestigial nod to UT but serves no narrative purpose in DR. There's no emotional core that makes me love the characters and want to see them succeed like there was in UT. And... that's what everyone loves and remembers about UT, so why does it feel like it's missing here?

    I'm not saying it's a bad game, but the pacing in game as well as the incredibly long window between releases make the pace of the entire production feel stilted and slow. Maybe I'll love it as much as UT once it's all out, but right now it's serviceable at best.    … Expand

    i'm not saying it's the worst rpg ever made, far from it, there's some good things about it, like the music and sprites, they're nice, but i can't understand how did it take that long to release a CHAPTER of this game, what is this? Square Enix with Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake? both of those games were mediocre, but they're understandable why they took so long, Square is a busy company of course, but this is an indie game, how the **** did it take 3 whole years for a 2.5 hours game to be released???

    Even then, the wait wasn't worth it, at all, unlike chapter 1, it really just seems like they're running out of ideas, chapter 2 has way too many things implemented that were used by other games, while my thoughts on chapter 1 was that it was fine, it really didn't feel any different (aside from the fact that you can't level up) than any other RPGs except that it was short.

    Characters aren't interesting in the slightest, puzzles are so simple or just straight up annoying, the mystery of chapter 1 is completely gone, basically ruining my expectations of it, recruiting system is stupid and has no reason to be in the game at all, items are pretty much useless, i only used it once in the entire game, the game is that easy.

    Not to mention, but there are some elements that actually tease the player for no reason at all, Susie's healing is an example of it, the game encourages the player to use it, but then you waste a turn by just using it, like what the **** man? That's a real dick move to do in an indie RPG, and it's not something a developer should include in a game UNLESS it's for comedic purposes, but literally, by just using it, it's basically letting the player ditch the whole thing for the rest of the playthrough.

    Just the fact that there are so many things that make the game not worth playing, i didn't even bother to check out the secrets and all

    If you want to play a good RPG, as in story, gameplay and music, just play Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, because there, it encourages the player to explore more and more and get stronger and stronger, something that deltarune fails to do.

    Or even play the insomniac games Spider-man for ps4/ps5, not that the deltarune/undertale playerbase even cares to play, since they're so obssesed with toby's games, reminds me of 13 year olds.    … Expand

    It feels like a game witten for a childrens TV show that has the target audience of 6-8 year olds. Probably because thats almost exactly what it is.

    Simply put, playing this game so far (since it's not actually yet complete) is pure bliss. The characters, the wit, the soundtrack, the HEART this game possesses is paralleled only by it's predecessor, Undertale. A worthy 10/10

    Unfortunately, this game was a complete disappointment for me. The biggest problem for me was that the game was too boring. Although it seems normal at first, the game is starting to overwhelm people.     Deltarune: Chapter 2 is very much a game of two halves. The first half (or perhaps the first two-thirds of the game) is the series at its unfortunate worst. Dialogue slides way too much into meme territory, with cliched references to things like 'gamer girls' and other outdated internet humour happening far too often. The developer's fondness for obnoxious speech quirks (tolerable inDeltarune: Chapter 2 is very much a game of two halves. Dialogue slides way too much into meme territory, with cliched references to things like 'gamer girls' and other outdated internet humour happening far too often. The developer's fondness for obnoxious speech quirks (tolerable in one-off characters) is a feature of the episode's main antagonist. The series is also beginning to turn into a meme of itself, with many catch phrases and jokes from Undertale and Deltarune: Chapter 1 repeated for cheap laughs.

    The visuals take a further step backwards from Chapter 1, with the developer not remembering the excellent colour schemes that made zones like Waterfall and Hotland work so well (despite their graphical limitations). The areas in Deltarune: Chapter 2 suffer from being dominated by a single blocked colour, a fact which the overcrowding with decorations fails to solve.

    Chapter 2 also fails to incorporate some of the features which made the first half of Chapter 1 more redeemable. The music, Toby Fox's signature, does the job but is not memorable (unlike Chapter 1's excellent 'Field of Hopes and Dreams', 'Lantern', and 'Hip Shop'). The battle system is also lacklustre, with normal enemy encounters requiring none of the thought or puzzle-solving that made Undertale (and even Deltarune Chapter 1) so stimulating. In Chapter 2, most normal enemy encounters are solved by choosing any of the one or two 'Act' options available, repeating it twice, and gaining an easy victory.

    Chapter 2 rewards persistent players, however, with an excellent final stretch. Four battles stood out to me as being thoroughly worthwhile, making full use of Deltarune's battle system and thrilling the player. This is an improvement on Chapter 1, in which only the secret boss battle (in my opinion) achieved the same amount of success. At around this point, the game's soundtrack also takes a big step up, with multiple tracks living up to the series' lofty standards. The game's extended epilogue, too, is generally satisfying.

    My grade of 6/10, then, is a balance between a large chunk of the game (which is a 3 or 4/10) and the latter section (8.5/10). It's a shame - with a couple of tweaks (and reigning in some of the series' indulgent creative tendencies), a much more consistent product could have been achieved. As it is, Chapter 2 has lower lows and higher highs than the more consistent Chapter 1, making them average out to score about the same overall.    … Expand

    i played through about half of the story i think, and watched most of the rest through videos online

    i hope Toby isnt restrained - or doesnt feel restrained - to fulfilling the 7 chapter idea, because i feel like this chapter might be an indication that it is so rigid and encompassing of a goal that a lot of potential fun of deltarune might 'bow down' to it to attain it

    They turned undertale into a kids game.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have absolutely no idea why so many people rabidly praise Deltarune Chapter 2. It comes off to me as less a game and more a vehicle through which Toby Fox can put on paper plate masks of the characters and reference memes from the 90's-00's at the player. From start to finish, absolutely everything that occurs "just happens". Not a single important event is caused by a character's actions, the story simply trundles along, delivering grating non-sequitur after grating non-sequitur, until it culminates in a final boss fight that, while gimmicky and fun, amounts to absolutely nothing but multiple hours of wasted time, despite its efforts to convince you otherwise.

    The main crux of everything wrong with the chapter can be summed up in a single character: the main antagonist, Queen. She absolutely never feels like a threat, nor does she feel like an actual character at all. Supposedly, she is a computer, particularly some kind of smash-together of "Noelle's sad search history" (which is never really relevant to the plot). Despite Queen's supposed status as a machine capable of thinking thousands of times faster than a person, she constantly makes careless mistakes, drinks, swears, quotes memes, and acts in a manner that makes no sense at all and is driven entirely by a desire to be random. She pops in and out throughout the plot, making wacky and irreverent "jokes", mostly about how much of a superior being she is. Then, at the end of the chapter, as though we had been building up to something instead of just screwing around in a back alley, eating bananas, sailing on swans, and referencing Twitter for two hours, she suddenly starts pretending that she -- and by extension, the story -- was building up to something, saying things about how sad Noelle is about her dead sister or whatever and babbling about escapism through computers. This had precisely ONE (1) separate instance of build-up, being the bookshelf in Noelle's room, which you encounter roughly fifteen minutes before the fight.
    Then, for whatever reason, after being defeated, Toby thought it'd be really funny to make a sitcom ending happen. Ralsei quickly explains the plot to her, and she goes, "Oh, well gee, sorry. What a misunderstanding, haha! You guys go on ahead, then." What? What kind of writing is this? Is this game about something or not? Which leads me to another question:

    Is this game about something or not? Is it a lighthearted comedy game made for people with a terrib- I mean *very specific* sense of humor, or is it a dramatic exploration of how we as people try to escape from reality through small comforts, and the things we leave behind as we grow older? If you're trying to do the latter, you CAN have jokes, that's fine, but you can't make the ENTIRE PLOT jokes -- it needs to have some build up, or at least some tiny hints that something deeper is happening. The closest thing you get is Spamton, who is both figuratively and literally garbage.
    Absolutely nothing of substance happens until the last 5 minutes of the chapter, where it's revealed that, whoooaa, Kris is the one opening all these fountains. Yeah, kinda figured. So, what's the twist about Asriel gonna be? That he's not actually very nice and that's what Kris has to play make-believe to escape from? Wowee. Couldn't have guessed that from the fact that Ralsei seems kinda suspect occasionally. Maybe he's secretly the narrator guy, wouldn't that be a twist.

    In short, Deltarune Chapter 2 is an annoying mess of unfunny references and visual gags trying its best to masquerade as a serious story -- essentially, it's what would happen if you tried as tonedeaf-ly as you could to make Persona into a comedy game. I can only hope that Toby knows this, and actually makes something happen in Chapter 3, but given his response to the tongue-bathing his fans gave his junk over the game on his Twitter, I'm not going to hold my breath. The only worth this game has is in its visuals and sound design, which are both unironically great. Unfortunately, pretty sounds and sights does not a good game make.    … Expand

    O Tobi Fox como sempre surpreendeu a todos com tamanha qualidade do seu trabalho. Sistemas aprimorados, história simples e cativante, personagens super carismáticos e mistérios como não pode faltar.

    Much like Ch. 1, I had a fun time and then the ending came out of nowhere and reminded me there was some serious stuff going on in this story. Can't wait to play Chapter 3 in 2024

    I am genuinely shocked by how creative and brilliant Toby Fox and his team are. This chapter is honestly better than the first and if the quality of writing, gameplay & graphics continue, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't top Undertale for me.

    Some minor but interesting experiments introduced in Chapter 2 are a welcome breath of fresh air and along with excellent writing make the game worth finishing twice. However, it’s hard to overlook the fact that Deltarune was built on the same, rather simple blueprint as Undertale and the formula might soon need a deeper makeover. That’s a worry for the future though. Today I urge you to download the game and experience another portion of Toby Fox’s great sense of humor. [12/2021, p.35]

    It only takes a few hours to complete Deltarune Chapter 2, barring those who wish to go back and play the different routes. The quality of the experience matches that of a full-price game, and it makes the wait for the next chapters even harder. Deltarune Chapter 2 has improved upon the foundation laid down by the original game, proving that this world's characters and setting have what it takes to match those of Undertale. There are still five more chapters of Deltarune to go and it remains to be seen whether it can truly step out from Undertale's shadow, but Deltarune Chapter 2 feels like a game that's more confidant in its direction, and more willing to let players shape the fate of its characters.
