To fully appreciate Dear Esther, you have to let go of what a game should be, and embrace the pacing.

Things can be mysterious, but there is no mystery to solve. I think the most important thing is to not try to make "sense" of the island, but become like a paper boat on water, wander where the paths lead you, and feel different emotions. I think is not possible to fully experience

Five Word Review: Walking simulator, not much else.
Favorite Thing: The caves were quite beautiful. Also, the narration is quite well done.
Least Favorite Thing: There was no intrigue; nothing to keep me going or make me care what was next.

    Playtime: 1h
    Enjoyment: 4/10
Recommendation: Try Firewatch or The Vanishing of Ethan Carter instead.

The game is unplayable for me due to a bug where things plugged into usb ports cause the camera to never stop spinning. Now it's a vomit sim instead of a walking sim.

Dear Esther raises so many interesting questions, not only in its narrative, but also in its design. I kept thinking about how wasted it was to make this a videogame, but then again, what other medium could have made me feel the same way?

One of the classic "walking simulators," and one of the first, Dear Esther retains its wind-swept, desolate fascination in the Landmark Edition remastering. If you were a fan of the original or enjoy vague, fragmented story-telling, Dear Esther is still one of the best of its genre. The soundtrack (now recorded with real instruments) is superb, and the story bits change from playthrough to playthrough; the plot will remain similar, but who exactly is speaking is never clearly established. The graphics still look impressive, too. Worth a purchase at the asking price if you're a fan of the genre.

That said, there are some issues:
    - Broken V-sync. It will not work, not through the game's settings, or through my graphics card driver settings (hello, screen-tearing!). In the original game, there was a Triple Buffering option in the settings that fixed the issue; the Triple Buffering option has been removed from the Landmark Edition.
    - The soundtrack has some amazing moments, but is poorly balanced at times (especially in the beginning of Chapter 4). The mid-range and upper frequencies are generally over-saturated, creating a shrill, brittle audio ambiance that wasn't present in the original version of the game.
    - Not all voice-over triggers as it is supposed to. I've played Dear Esther several times, I knew there was a voice-over before the ending cave in Chapter 2, but it took 4 playthroughs of the chapter before it triggered.

Clipped into the ground and got stuck. A walking simulator that can't even get walking quite right. Only made it to chapter 2 of 4, but unclear what it was trying to tell me. No way to interact with the world. Music and vsuals are nice.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (2014). (Dear Esther: Landmark Edition).

Dear Esther: Landmark Edition is the great game that Dear Esther was, plus some extras.
