DARKSIDERS GENESIS is a prequel to the series and sets up the stage for darksiders 1 plus we can finally play our boy strife

story: the council gives war and strife a task to defeat the demon lords that are posing a threat to humanity and with the help of some say friendly faces you start your adventure to save humanity

    pros:

the new diablo like game play is weird but a warm welcome to the series it brings something new to the table and still retains the hack and slash plus puzzle game play we know and love

the commentary between strife and war really feels authentic and brings more character development to both of them as you get to know them more

split screen and co op are a some what of a main feature although you can solo the game it is recommended to play it with another friend

the art style really shines even if the camera angel is diablo like you can still notice all the small details and all the background stuff

the horse riding is back after i complained about it in my darksiders 3 review and some maps are purposefully made for you to ride your horse as much as you can

they brought back war with all the combos skills and stats he had at the first darksiders and some how made him even more bad ass

the boss fights are unique creative and everyone of them is different plus every boss has his own area to fight them in

the endgame in this game is mainly collecting hidden stuff doing secret puzzles and 100% the arena either than that there is nothing

the game has somewhat of a replay value because you can play the game just for its game-play over and over

    cons:

some mini bosses are just super recycled to the point of the game even poking fun at that and at some point you can just shoot a red barrel and one shot them

the map is total trash and barely even helps you navigate

performance issues such as bugs frame drops and i even experienced 1 hard crash

the way they made strife in this game felt like he is really weak yes you can switch bullet types and you have a powered up mode but it still felt like not enough and most of the time i played with war although i really wanted to play with my boy strife

i finished the game after 12 hours which is really short and i really wished that the game would have been longer

in conclusion the main reason they made this game is budget issues as the developer said but somehow the managed even with a low budget to pull it off and create an awesome solid game which brings me to the final score which is a 8 out of 10 it almost dropped to a 7 but the game is charming and i really do want to the support the studio who made it

A solid 8. It would have been a 9, but there are some huge spikes in difficulty during boss fights. A really fun isometric action RPG with cool upgrades.

The game is fun in single player, until your get the Arena levels. They are unfairly hard and I do hate all the arenas in general. It's fun to collect items and powers upgrades. You can buy them too. The story seems really good. I think the game was made for coop, because the single player is somewhat unbalanced. Plateforming stuff is fair and you are not too penalized for cheap death. NotThe game is fun in single player, until your get the Arena levels.

This was fun and fascinating. I love this «Darksiders». A good adventure and a fresh point of view on the franchise.

But not technically part is no very best. A lot of bugs and problems. And the bad Russian localization of text. I hope the game will be fixed.

If you are a fan of the DS series this game will not disappoint for your first hands on with Strife as a character. War being playable and the kinship between the horsemen as well as Co Op makes this a must buy for all Darksiders fans
Platforming and Area traversal has some major issues and the load of bugs will make this a frustrating play-through, but this is a problem that can be solved with patches and I believe will make this a worthwhile game to have in your collection especially considering the price point.

A little context to my thoughts.

Been an absolute fan of this franchise since I played the first game over a decade ago. DS2 followed along and even though it had a slight changes from the War's version Death's character as well as the game on a whole was an excellent experience. DS3 manages to be a formidable game though not as finessed as the last two considering the massive shift in it's developers roots, yet this still managed to feel like it belonged in this universe and Fury as a character grew over me through the game.

    The Good
Now to the main Dish - Darksiders Genesis with it's departure from the Third Person/Over the Shoulder to a Top down Dungeon Crawler. DS Genesis manages to retain it's essence for the DS universe and provides us with a great experience and a layover heading to the eventual climax of this saga going on for over a decade and a half now.

The story though not overly affecting the overall plot we have been following since War's Crater Landing, even so manages to be an excellent hack and slash/dungeon crawler experience raised above it's mediocre game design due to War and Strife's characters and the kinship between them.
Strife as a playable character was the highlight of the game for me since I am not really a 'Diablo' person and was really skeptical going into this game, but the soul of DS hack and slash is well and alive with amazing combat mechanics and excellent character handling.

    The BAD...
...that of course exists in all forms of media was a particular let down. Even if I were to take into calculation that this is a combat focused game and not a platforming focused game, still the area traversal and platforming was one of the worst aspects of this game. Some of the traversal puzzles were so very frustrating not because they were hard but because of the weird camera angles and various bugs related to glitching which would usually end with me having to take a break and or restart the game for it to function right. Multiple times the game would lock up my character barring me from preforming any actions other than a single jump and moving around.

A few patches should fix these problems. Regardless there is a lot of good here as the combat is very satisfying giving you the vicarious feeling of being in control of one of the all powerful Horsemen !!

There are quite a few things that just seem like really bad design. The creature core (upgrades) slotting design is one. Unnecessarily tedious and time consuming.

Many of the puzzles/obstacle courses are so poorly designed. Annoying, frustrating, and tedious. Not the type where you feel satisfied after completing them, but where you feel relieved and upset. Many of them seem like they're not working, then you watch it on youtube, see that it IS broken and just roll your eyes. Have to just keep trying to bypass the bug/glitch/bad design. And some of them are much worse than "roll your eyes bad".

It's the kind of game that is so flawed that you have to use a video walkthrough. I'm deducting multiple points just for this.

Came out of nowhere and it suprised me a lot. I didnt expect this but it was great. Its short which is a good thing here and is fun diablo game with combat from previous darksiders titles. Theres a nice skill tree and skills progression system. But arena feels unnecessary and lazily done. Also the **** platforming puzzles in this game are pain to do.

Expand

Mediocre Diablo knock off. That was my first thought having played 30 minutes of this game. There's a lack of polish. You seem unable to manually adjust the camera angles which annoyingly auto adjusts in a way that often makes things harder not easier. Its not a small shortcoming when you are asked to climb walls, jump and pull levers, fly and more.

Which is my second area of criticism.

Its not a small shortcoming when you are asked to climb walls, jump and pull levers, fly and more.

Which is my second area of criticism. These game components are handled badly, its hard to do what should be straight forward tasks. Often you feel like this game is a keyboard and mouse killer as you have to mash and pound keys to get things done. Its imprecise and luck plays a big part.

Additionally why is it when your character is obscured you get a blue outline but not one of the characters he's fighting?

Its these shortcomings that rob this game of appeal and slow its pace, which is a real failing in what should be a fast paced scrolling D&D style game.

On the upside the action is reasonable. Its has the right feel and the sets are nice. The banter between the two characters is good, as is the general story. Sound track is decent too.

That said this one feels lackluster and I'm having a hard time getting into it. I guess I'm simply used to better.

In short OK but not great. My advice as they tell you when the game starts get a game pad to plug into your PC or laptop. I think this would improve game play and will save your keyboard and mouse.

No real challenge, no way to lose, no penalty for death.
If you die you just re-spawn and rush back into the fight.

Bad camera angles can confuse you causing you to walk around in circles not knowing which way you should go.

The action is pretty basic, you just spam your attacks until you see a finisher is available, and you use it.

It's an OK game, but there are better options.

Here you play as 2 of the four horseman, strife and the returning war from the original darksiders…
Right off the bat youll notice this isn’t your typical darksiders game.. this is a top down hack and slash game with light puzzle elements thrown in… hopefully we will still get a solo strife game bcause in genesis he shares the spotlight with war, and by the games end I feel as though war ends up stealing this spotlight…
Her in darksiders genesis you essentially go forward sometimes on horseback, most of the time on foot to take down enemies, throw switches and make your way to the end of a level to take down its boss and move on… it’s the same hook for all 13 hours of this games run time…
Strife and War both play different and their difference in abilities and upgrades ads a layer of planning, strategy, and approach to the world and battles…
I was initially inlove with this game… searching every crack and crevis for its secrets to insure I had the most powerful horseman as possible… and I enjoyed this hook until about hour 8.. this is where I started to become a bit over the game as everything starts to feel like its just too much… as you progress the game, much like the main darksiders games youll unlock new items that can be used in combat but more importantly are used as puzzle solvers… and the abundance of puzzles, especially those that hide secrets behind them is what just drained the soul out of me… pun intended… there is just far too much puzzle solving for how long of a game this is… don’t get me wrong… Darksiders gensis is paced perfectly… puzzles, platforming and secret hunting spread out the battles.. keeping the combat fresh and fun rather thaan a nussance… this is helped by the fact that youre rewarded with souls that you can use to upgrade your characters and buy cores to plug into a bonus/boost tree.. that enemies will sometimes drop during combat as well… but there is just so much puzzle and problem solving that it discourages me from wanting to sit and polay for long hrs at a time… I started to become just mentally exhausted playing 6 hrs straight of what started to feel like chapters that drug on forever… I came to a point where I told myself 1 more chapter, sleep and finish the game for review tomorrow, because this is starting to become so unfun to me… and its not that the puzzls are challenging… its just that theres too much of it… every secret is hidden behind a puzzle rather than just really well hidden like a god of war secret for example.. a game that darksiders clearly draws inspiration from… its okay for a secret here and there to be puzzle trapped.. but every single one is just exhausting after a while… especially in a game that’s 13 hours long… in my opinion no puzzle heavy game has any business being over 10..
that aside the gameplay and combat are a blast, playing as strife with his ranged combat, switching to war and brigning in that brute force while strife heals a bit… the back and forth and weapon variety between the two characters keeps you glued to your seat, keeps you engaged as every encounter feels just the right amount of challenging, and again thanks to being rewarded, I felt the urge to start fights myself.. and that’s when you know you have a great combat system in place… when you seek the fights…
back in the hub world you can also go into arenas and battle through 10 waves to unlock different rewards, but I just feel like the rewards are far too small to be worth the effort, so sortve a throwaway feature… all in all though darksiders genesis is a refereshing jump into a world of soul gathering that’s so fun to play at times you forget that youre playing a top down hack and slash game.. you feel immersed into this world.
    I give Darksiders Genesis
    an 8/10

Playing this game with 2 players is an absolute trainwreck. Constant disconnecting, errors, bugs. It is utterly and completely not worth the money or your time to play. This isn't even including the numerous and unfathomable bugs that will probably plague single player in the platforming, executions, or general gameplay. Absolutely avoid at every cost, not even worth a single hard earned dollar.

What Airship Syndicate have done is show the world that the Darksiders IP is more than a one-trick pony, and for those who’ve not been tempted by the core franchise entries up until this point, there is now a very different sample of the IP with which to taste.
