It's not as good as it's predecessors , but if you're hungry for that Souls experience you got from the last two games, this will at least hold you over until Beast Souls.

    An excellent game.
Huge improvements in both performance and appearance from Dark Souls.
The gameplay is still great. Controls could be better when it comes to M&KB but I plugged in my controller and it worked perfectly. Hopefully they'll patch it a bit more and fix the issues other people are having but I'm a bit disappointed in that people keep screaming "Game crash, u suck,

I highly recommend this game to pretty much everyone but I also suggest that you use a controller if you're going to play it, it's sadly the better way to play it so.

    Why? It's a lot easier!!
    1) Since the very beginning you can travel around bonfires you discovered and this is a MASSIVE help as I find myself dying a lot on the first one especially when travelling to reach a safe bonfire and spend my souls.
    2) You will farm thousands of items to heal you, I finished the game with more than 50 healing items that really makes the estus flask not that vital anymore.
    3) There are 30+ bosses but 80% of them are so easy that you can beat em by yourself without any help! Probably if you are good some of them wont even hit you once.
Is true, you can choose the champions path and do all by yourself and solve part of this problem, but still some bosses are almost silly (and I played without any magic or fire stuff and without following any guide)

Pvp is decent but finite to few areas, and what is really lacking is the old style random invasion by random guy that wants to steal your souls, I played almost 50 hrs in this game and I have not been invaded once!! Not a single time!!.

Would I recommend it? Yes, still it's a very good game with a unique dark atmosphere and still is harder than most of the games around, but the first was better.

    Pros
+ Larger map and more areas
    + Nice atmosphere as usual
    + Many bosses
    Cons
-...but most of them quite weak
-Basically easier than dark souls I and the difficulty is the SOUL of this game :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of people criticize why this game shows Xbox controller buttons but that is merely an excuse for just being a hater. Dark Souls II was one of the best action adventure games I've ever played. I don't consider it an RPG but that doesn't make it any less fantastic. The story involves you from beginning to the end and the visuals and character modeling is stunning, specially on PC. Combat never gets dull and the enemies are never the same in two different areas. The ending makes you think about why you did all that, just to sit on a throne locked in a cave? Dark Souls II shows many hollow concepts of life and it has a deep and meaningful narrative. It was leagues above the original Dark Souls in every way specially story-wise. Expand

This game is literally unplayable on PC. I wish I could actually review it based on I don't know, playing the game? The controls are a nightmare to figure out, and barely work once they do. I've experienced freezing and crashing beyond any other game I've ever played. How about next time a game doesn't work for PC, DON'T RELEASE IT ON PC. Serious waste of money.

I fell in love with the characters from DS1 and all of the lore. DS2 just throws it out and keeps the same framework. I don't even consider this installment to be canonical. DS3 is the true sequel and the only reason it included a few things from DS2 was probably due to the fact that it wpuld be a hive controversy to not include anything from it. Everything about this game seems uninspired. Whereas DS3 and DS1 are masterpieces. Wtf happened?! Expand

Better port, worse game than Dark Souls 1. Performance is really quite incredible and the game can even run on my $200 laptop with integrated graphics. I have not yet failed a connection. Input seems fine. All the problems with the above seem to have been patched as of this review. As for the game itself, I'm displeased with some of the design choices. I have not yet failed a connection. Input seems fine. All the problems with the above seem to have been patched as of this review. As for the game itself, I'm displeased with some of the design choices. First and foremost, the weapon durability is absurd. If you slash a man armed with nothing more than cloth 60 times with a sharp knife, the knife will not break, yet this is exactly what happens in this game. Whereas item durability was more of a long-term problem in Dark Souls 1, you will find your items getting close to breaking after killing 10 or so enemies without returning to a bonfire. There are items that slow degradation, of course... But only by up to 50%. Secondly, the soul memory limit for coop is incredibly annoying and, halfway through the game when bosses start dropping 50,000+ souls (the limit), helping one or two of a party with a boss could boot the last person out of range in soul memory. This is effective for game balance, but what is the point of balancing a PvE experience? The fights are no more difficult than they were to begin with anyway. Quite annoying. Poise is awful in this game, and most weapons can easily attain poise break in a short chain or with a strong attack, so the modus operandi is rolling, and yet rolling is slower and with fewer invincibility frames than in DS 1. At the same time, shields with 100% physical resist have higher requirements and are found later in the game. In other words, they made it more likely that you're going to be hit and take damage. The defense values also make pretty little sense, as you can achieve outstandingly high damage reductions early on in the game by DS 1 standards, and yet you can still be killed in two or three hits.

Overall, the game design is much more slack, and it is superior from a technical standpoint compared to DS 1.

Detailed review elaborating on the game itself is already written for the PS3 version, to which I've poured hundreds of hours into, so now I will just focus on the PC release, which is, without any sign of doubt the best version of this game.

In short, Dark Souls 2 isn't nearly as good and breathtaking as the original DS, especially the PVE, but it still contains so many qualities and it's still so much better than anything out there right now, that it doesn't deserve anything less that a full score. While being the weakest chapter in the souls series story-wise and PVE, DS2 has by far the best multiplayer aspect, especially Covenants and PVP, I haven't had so much fun with PVP in Souls games ever before and PVP gaming in DS2 can very easily consume hundreds of your hours full of combat fun.

PC release is way more visually pleasing and beautifully crisp thanks to the hi-res textures. Those armors are just gorgeous and as much as the Souls games have never been about the graphics, after getting used to this hi-res beauty I couldn't go back to the smudged and muddy PS3 version. It's also much more fluid thanks to the doubled FPS from 30 to 60 and on top of that the loading times are at least 3 times faster as warping between worlds or connecting to the worlds of other players takes just about 3 seconds. PC is definitely the best way to experience this game and it makes a great game even better. All the hate on keyboard and mouse control is nonsense, just the opposite, they did a great job with options and incorporating these elements into DS2. Yes, it feels better to play all Souls games on a good controller because it was designed that way, but I have finished DS and DS2 on KB+mouse on all 7 difficulties without any problem and if you're good at it, the controls can be actually much more responsive and faster (doesn't change the fact that I prefer the controller for the "feels good" aspect :)

The only problem with the PC version that I have is the community. In about 300 hours on PS3 and hundreds of PVP matches, I don't think I have ever run into a hacker. On PC however, just on the first NG playthrough 2 invasions into my world = both hackers with infinite health. Now it could be actually fun as I dealt with both of them by pushing them off the cliff, but this should be dealt with somehow as the Online aspects of this game are it's strongest part and this definitely damages the experience. Also the sense of co-op seems weaker, summoned phantoms are returning to their worlds all the time, running around like crazy and so on. The problem is the sense of no responsibility whatsoever coming from the lack of communication options directly in the game, so you cannot enlighten the noobs, or write to each other during co-op sessions. As much as I hated GFWL on the first DS, it provided the functional communicating option with other players you've played with, something you can't or very hardly can do on Steam, so some kind of internal private message option directly in the game would be really beneficial.

Overall, Dark Souls 2 is a fantastic game and a worthy chapter in Souls series that excels especially in PVP and that's the reason I will play this for hundreds hours more, or until the just announced "Project Beast" is released :) 10/10

The only technical issue is the crashing upon start up, which still happens sometimes for me. But what Souls fan cares about that when the game itself is beautiful and fun to play.

The online is just Ridiculously good now, if you played souls games you know you had to wait 3 hours to get a phantom after 200 trys and 50 summoned failed. Now if it fails it lets you know right of the bat, but it rarely does. THANK GOD FOR THAT!

In terms of port it is way better, but the non availability of gamepad configuration and the the the usage of xbox keys on subtitles makes it feel like a port, but all the rest is just there

Dark Souls 2(DkS2) is an Action Game/RPG that relies on an extreme difficulty curve and respawn mechanic to provide the action with a special spice that you don't see in many games. Is it harder than Demon's Souls(DS) or Dark Souls(DkS)? I say, 'who cares?' A lot of arguments devolve into comparisons, but I found Dark Souls 2 to be a unique beast when compared to its predecessors.

Is it harder than Demon's Souls(DS) or Dark Souls(DkS)? I say, 'who cares?' A lot of arguments devolve into comparisons, but I found Dark Souls 2 to be a unique beast when compared to its predecessors.

I could write a novel on Dark Souls, and a sequel on Dark Souls 2, but in the interest of brevity I will keep this short.

New weapon movesets, new death system, new interactive scenery, new stats system, new damage system, it's hard to find a part of DkS2 that hasn't been taken down to scratch and reworked since DkS. This is both good and bad, as many new problems surface (estus healing power, weapon durability drop) and some old ones return completely unaddressed (Lag-stabs, curving arrows, enemy weapons phase through walls) to menace the intrepid soul who dares play this game. The fixed problems are possibly outnumbered by the new ones, but the game still manages to feel highly polished and playable almost all the time.

Even with that, and the occasional facepalm over dated textures or stupid AI, DkS2 is a gem and you should play it right now. You will not find another game like it anywhere in the market (except DS and DkS obviously) and it gets so many things just right that you will find yourself sucked in for hours on end. The innovative multiplayer system simultaneously makes you hate, love, envy, and pity every other player in the game, and you will often end up seeing the same person multiple times as they advance in tandem with you. Some of the most rewarding multiplayer experiences I've ever had have came as a result of summoning some random person four or five times and the two of us getting to trust and know each other without ever talking(the game has no voice or text chat).

Many negative reviews are citing terrible controls, bad console port, etc. And yes, this is a console port and yes, it does pretty much require a controller to play. The controller is so much more intuitive for the combat system that mouse and keyboard really doesn't have an opportunity to shine. If you are a PC purist who can't stand the idea of a console game on your shiny rig or can't pick up a 360 controller without going into apoplectic rage, you will not be able to get the most out of DkS2 and should probably go play Starcraft 2 or something.

    Pros:
-death by lava, spider, fall, fire, poison, giant club, sickle, spear, sword, rocks, tree, ladder, teeth, water, chariot, etc.
    -unique, engrossing gameplay
-clever presence/absence of music makes the soundtrack stand out when it is present
-great voice acting makes the NPCs come to life (until you kill them)
-beautiful graphics most of the time
    -fantastic multiplayer
    -New game+ adds extensive replayability

    Cons:
-death by lava, spider, fall, fire, poison, giant club, sickle, spear, sword, rocks, tree, ladder, teeth, water, chariot, etc.
    -occasional graphics snafus
-AI is dumb as a post stuck in another post stuck in a lobotomized hamster
-lag in multiplayer, therefore tears ahead
-message system combined with invasions allows trolls and griefers free reign
-boss fights are a letdown compared to previous entries, with a few exceptions

I purchased a xbox 360 controller just for this game and i still not regret it, besides the great quality of that controller, the game really went up from 5 to 9 with a gamepad.

The game has changed a lot compared to Dark Souls 1, but i loved all the changes.
For example your stuff and health will be repaired if you rest at a bonefire, so you are not forced to repair all the time.
Also the World isn't anymore designed that you have to run hours just to get to the next smith.
In Dark Souls 2, you have a Mainplace, like in dark souls 1, but this time it is diffrent and i will not spoil anything.
I finished Dark Souls 2, i don't finished Dark Souls 1, why? because i was to low skilled to beat all the bosses and you are forced to kill all the enemys on the way to a boss in Dark Souls 1.
this was changed in Dark Souls 2 (thank you!), now you have mostly a bonfire next to a boss or at least, you have to clear the area 15(or was it 12?) times, after that, the enemys will not spawn anymore, but you have to kill each enemy 15 times.
You can reset this, but i will not spoil this (google it, if you want to know!).
So this is the first big change, more Bonefires, but also you can teleport to each Bonefire at start, but only to one you found and activate.
The menus are changed to you get used to them pretty fast, also the player has a little delay now, putting up the shield could take you a second but same here, you get used to it very fast.
I like the enemy design, but the only problem i see with Dark Souls 2 compared to Dark Souls 1, is the world/story.
You have a lot of Enemys/Npcs/items you really don't know and never will know about, i finished the game with 3 diffrent characters + one with N(ew)G(ame)+ but i still don't know what some npcs do, there just there and do nothing more in the game.
But beside this, i love the game, you can summon help, you can help other people...and you still can get invaded, but more on specific parts of the map.
I don't get invaded on many parts of the map, but on some parts i get invaded each 10 minutes.
So in my opinion, i loved from software for removing the "try &error", also the boenfire(teleportation) and fair bosses, to be honest, some of the bosses in Dark Souls 1 are very unfair (damn you capra demon!).
Now with Dark Souls 2, i had a lot of fun, the changes are understandable and clever.
But i think for the pro-gamers who finished DS1 like 3 times, are a bit disapointed, but for that you can still use one item, which makes the game even harder!

The only disapointment was the last boss, after i killed the boss i was like "thats it?" even for me, it was way to easy.

Dark souls 2 is an improvement over the disaster port that was dark souls 1 that was literally unplayable on PC. One of the first issues that bothered me with this game is the promise of the developers to make an original PC game and then port it to the consoles. During the first dark souls game play videos we saw a much more impressive graphical game that had a beautiful lightning engine, but unfortunately all we got in the final product is a slightly improved graphical version dark souls 1. Dark souls 2 in its core is all about over coming challenges and getting rewarded for it. Dark souls 2 is a game that is challenging, but can be easily exploited in many ways to make it easier. For example when you die in dark souls 2 your are revived as a hollowed undead that looses a part of his total health bar. The more you die the more health you loose until you drop to 50% of your total health. To reverse this process you must use a rare item that is called human effigy, but you can easily avoid all of this by wearing the ring of life protection that not only protects you from turning hollowed, but also saves all of your souls that you will loose when dying. And to use the ring again you just need to pay 3000 souls to repair it(not a large amount of souls). Dark souls 2 pvp in the bottom line is just broken. The poor connection causes awkward situations in which you might do a direct hit only to see how your enemy ignores your attack and back stabs you from behind. On the other hand their is a large variety of pvp engagements. There is a large verity of pvp covenants that you can join to experience your pvp from a different perspective. Dark souls 2 doesn't treat you like a child, you can kill who ever you want to kill and bear the consequences. Dark souls 2 lacks 1 huge key element that the previous 2 games did, interesting bosses. Most of the bosses in dark souls 2 are your typical RPG bosses. For the most part the only way the game manages to make the boss battles more difficult is by adding a couple of more enemies on your screen that you cant follow because of the poor lock on system in the game like the Ruin sentinels or the twin dragon riders. In those fights you always find yourself fighting the camera more than the actual bosses. The other way dark souls 2 makes difficult bosses is by adding just annoying abilities or raising the boss health stats to ridiculous levels like old king Vendrick that is just boring to fight with or the Royal Rat authority that can break your armor instantly with its toxic liquid. On the other hand there are a couple of fun bosses like the Smelter Demon or the Pursuer that can give you a fun and a challenging fight . The plot of the game sadly falls apart. The amount of unknown mystery and the amount of unanswered questions in the game give you the impression that the developers were just too lazy to write a proper story for the game and just decided to cover everything with "mystery". When you reach the end of the game and face Nashandra that we know very little about her true story and reasons for her hostility to you (honestly we know almost nothing about who she even is). After a very boring and a slow fight in which if you are a ranged character you might find this the easiest boss in the game while every melee character will probably get cursed by her curse fog that is around her. After you finish her off you go to the throne room to sit on the throne because? And then you pretty much hear the following message that tells you that no matter what you choose it will result in the same cycle that was in dark souls 1 or in other words the whole game was pointless from the start to finish. For me this killed dark souls. From that very moment I stopped taking a game seriously and just continued to play to finish my build to find myself quitting the moment I finished building it. I wont even bother to discuss the rest of the characters of the game because they became pointless the moment I reached the end of the game. In conclusion dark souls 2 might be a challenging game that you might find fun if you like challenges, but you cant take it seriously because of the almost none existing story(lore does not count if your actual plot does not exist). I believe that dark souls game is still a pretty good game despite all the flaws in the game because when dark souls 2 does it right. IT does it perfectly right and it leaves you with a satisfaction that will stay with you for a long time. Expand

Neither title apologize from start to finish...They both have their technical short comings and can be cause for frustration but the core of each title, the depth, the literal...OK GO aspect to the games mentality separates them from other RPG's period.

I am so mentally exhausted over RPGs highlighting the path...making *the thing to pickup glow...Dark Souls series games literally show a lovely cut scene and then like I said basically boot you in the ass and tell you to go like you would a teenager who needed to find a job.

Dark souls II made up for a lot of the PVP short comings and connection issues that Prepare to Die had (on PC). The PVE felt very similar and was only made *easier due to the face that most people sort of knew what a souls game was. Dark Souls perpare to die was vicious... almost like a Great White Shark swimming in chum. Dark Souls II however was still vicious but a lot more fun...like a Great White Shark wearing a Party hat..

I have over a 115 hours into this title...two level 130 + characters and almost every day I still get the urge to start again...try a different build and really just be in that Dark Souls world. The atmosphere created especially with a could ENB tweaks (PC again) literally make me "Praise the sun!" around almost every corner.

The sound...the voice acting...the depth are all second to none. Sure the NPC characters mouths dont move but the pure voice acting is spot on...The complexity you can find in this world if your patience is high is unmatched.

Some people moan about having to use a controller on a PC game...(insert cricket noises here). I have had a controller in my hand since my first DX 4-100 that I built in the late 80's...they are for gaming and PC's are the master race of gaming...so no big issue for me there.

I can only hope for more souls games...at a minimum DLC content soon.

I have heard that Demon Souls may get a part II which would be epic considering I never got the chance to play (never came to PC)

Dont miss this game if your a true hardcore RPG fan...

It may be low on direct narrative and high on twitch gaming skill demand, but It also requires grasping the games solid character stats basis, and a continual piecing together of the deep, subtly hidden narrative (e.g. in NPC backstory & item provenance), requirements immediately reminiscent of 'oldskool' and implemented faithfully here, even though the gameplay is very much a new beast.

The technical triumph of Dark Souls is its melee combat, each weapon type (~20 in all) has its own moveset enabling wildly differing combat depending primarily on what the player chooses, although being comfortable swinging them all pays off as adapting beyond your comfort zone will be required and weapon set knowledge transfers an advantage (logically) against the many devious enemies on your path. No other game has accomplished such a consistent portrayal of hand to hand combat, it has a high learning curve, but once peaked it becomes intensely satisfying.

And for me personally thats where the real triumph of Dark Souls resides, utterly regardless of normal narrative techniques to involve the player emotionally, this games combat (incorporating the whole death-hallowed-life cycle) has managed to make me identify closer with my nameless & voiceless avatar than the vast majority of all the great cRPGs of the past.

    It's a Masterpiece, get it & don't give up !

DS2 (vanilla) is moderately better than DS1 (fully patched & modded) in PC responsiveness, DS1 remains the more difficult game, arguably slightly better on that score, and a more interesting hallowing mechanic, but I imagine some of the "streamlining" for 2 is probably a good thing designed to ease new people into the world better.

Make no mistake, these games will challenge & disturb you !

From 1, second version looks more advanced and pretty, graphic isnt best, but who cares about graphic ? For me its black horse for 2014, even DLC content looks nice for that money. Finally a game for adults, and geeks. You need to know the mechanics before it become fun!

It's been said a million times before, but this is indeed the worst of the Souls series. It's really a shame that they decided to make a direct sequel instead of another successor like Dark Souls was to Demon's Souls, because on its own this game is a good one. Not great, but good. It's really a shame that they decided to make a direct sequel instead of another successor like Dark Souls was to Demon's Souls, because on its own this game is a good one. Not great, but good. It gets a lot of things right: combat is slower paced (and in fact the whole game is slower paced), but this isn't necessarily a bad thing, and it can be just as good if not better to play than the original. Dual Wielding was also implemented the best as it has ever been, and many level concepts are extremely creative and cool. However, that's where the good things end. The world design, the best part of Dark Souls 1, is completely gone: the game has 4 linear paths at the start, and then just one path after those. There are no more interconnections, and the devs gave in to the people who whined about Dark Souls 1 being too hard, and now there's fast travel from the start of the game, probably a reason why they didn't bother with actual world design. Partially as a result of the fast travel taking you between very different areas on a whim, and partially because the feel of the game is very different from Dark Souls 1, the atmosphere also doesn't compare to 1 in the slightest. The game also has more artificial difficulty than the first, with traps that sometimes can't be predicted and learned from, more enemy spamming, and despite this the game is still a lot easier than 1, even for people who play this first as I did. The bosses are also massively disappointing, with almost all of them being incredibly easy, and an incredible reduction in variety: At least half the bosses in the game are humanoid forms with big and imposing armor and weapons. The story is also a step down, with references to the first game that often feel out of place and a troubled dev cycle that made them largely unable to focus and flesh out their original ideas. All in all, it was a solid effort by the B team, and a decent game that's still worth playing, but it was doomed from the start: a sequel made for a game that clearly was never meant to have one, made by different and less experienced people, and it shows throughout the game that the developers didn't really understand what made dark souls 1 great. They very obviously just listened to everyone who hyped up the difficulty without understanding that it was only talked about for the difficulty by people who didn't really appreciate it, and that's a real shame. After many hours and multiple playthroughs I can honestly say this game is great. It is as difficult as you could expect from a Souls game and the port is leaps and bounds ahead of the first installment on PC. I thoroughly enjoyed playing as various types of characters, and although some styles of play may not suit my fancy as much as others, each is rewarding in their own way. I thoroughly enjoyed playing as various types of characters, and although some styles of play may not suit my fancy as much as others, each is rewarding in their own way. Game Play gets a solid 10/10

My problems start arising with the poor graphics. This game, when I first looked at the trailers, promised next gen graphics with advanced lighting and particles, and improved resolutions. While we got the resolutions or the most part, lighting, particles, and textures are overall bland and leave the world much less beautiful than it could potentially be. The physics are good but sometimes the controls can lag or overcompensate leaving you wondering, "how did that even happen?". Overall, Graphics and Physics gets a decent 6.5/10. They simply aren't up to snuff when you look at modern games, considering the age.

Sounds. Sounds in this game I find to be acceptable. if you're using surround sound or simulated surround headphones the sounds can be very informative and be the difference between life or death in an instant. Overall I have no major qualms with the sounds as they are generally good and the soundtrack lends itself to the overall atmosphere of the game quite effectively. Sounds get a 9/10

The last thing I want to mention is the multiplayer system of this game. While it is at times easy to find people to play with, it is very sporadic. Usually help can be found in front of boss fog or at the beginning of difficult areas, which is fine, and also optional for those who don't want to play with any help. Invasions are the same as the first installment, sometimes rather annoying and unfair. Its never fun being stalked by the same lvl 200 player over and over again when you're just trying to reach the next boss room in an area at lvl 45. But invasions, like helpful multiplayer, is part of how the Souls multiplayer system works, and they are acceptable. The major flaw of multiplayer that has plagued Souls games is the lack of ability to find your friends, in specific, in game. While Souls games are supposed to feel rather lonely, if multiplayer is an option, why not be able to play with friends? It just doesn't make sense and is quite an irritant. Hopefully a mod similar to the first Dark Souls will come out to enable friend to friend play. Multiplayer gets a satisfactory 7/10.

    so 10 + 6.5 + 9 + 7/40 = 8.125 ~= 8/10

Overall, a great game and well worth the money I spent to buy it on release, despite the pet peeves and lack-luster graphics. As with any game of this size, it is not without its' glitches, but it is an amazing game and well worth the purchase.

But the Bosses are not as cool as in both Demons Souls and Dark Souls and the locations are not as lovely made as in Dark souls. But one important thing has been improved, the Multiplayer part.

Now they use dedicated Server which brings a new Expirience in PvP and Coop, no backstabbing while lagging, no Damage without animation and plenty more Improvements.

To put it into a nutshell, Dark Souls 2 is still a RPG which should be played by every PS3 owner. Sth. that u dont forget afterall and u will love it. I just hope they publish a DLC which brings some new Locations like in Dark Souls :D

However, every single nitpick I had with the first game's gameplay/systems and its PC port, especially the too dark, too muddy graphics has been addressed in the sequel. This game has put a bug in my brain in the best way possible. It has me addicted like Metroid/Bioshock/Resident Evil 4 and the satisfaction of designing new characters and finding new secrets and paths is very high. More so than DS1, I feel like when I die it was my fault thanks to the smoother combat for all types. It seems like the "cheap" kills from the first have been toned down in favor of higher skill combat (for instance, smaller parry windows, different sorcery timing and stamina use, and more difficult backstabs), which is an improvement. All in all, that sense of exploration and discovery combined with excellent risk/reward gameplay and combat is what makes the "Souls" games such a hit and this game has that in spades while also retaining the challenge of the series (difficulty-wise, all 3 "Souls" games feel roughly equal to me, but 2 was the first time I've died mostly in combat rather than environmental issues). I still don't give a crap about the world or characters-except Gavlan and Melentia- but when the gameplay, graphics, and loot are this good, it matters little to me. Enjoy!

Note: Love all the cry babies giving this poor reviews for the PC port because they want to play everything with a keyboard and mouse. That's great, go play a dang FPS or MMO but you are truly an idiot to be expecting precision controls in a third person game on KB+M. I'm sure these same people pirate enough games to save the money and get an X1 controller which works perfectly.

Yes, it's difficult. Yes, it will eat your soul. Yes, this game is the Devil's son and probably the next prince of darkness.

But it is so beautiful, in a way I cannot fully comprehend. The hidden lore, the very good gameplay, the style of the bosses and the world. They will win (and kill) you.

As usual one of the best games out there, as it was Dark Souls 1. I cannot understand all those neg. reviews.. This is a hardcore game not an action kiddy "I cannot die" game.

Furthermore, the player is seldom rewarded for exploration, often only receiving junk after making a tricky jump that took 20 or so attempts.

There are major improvements, however, when it comes to the UI and PVP/co-oping with a friend. Your summoned allies can heal themselves via estus flasks and lifegems, so it's much easier to run through an area with a buddy. For this reason, among others, the game is much easier than its predecessor. It seems that From Software sacrificed quality for quantity, as there are a whopping 27 bosses in the game but none are very memorable or very challenging. Even the optional Ancient Dragon, often deemed the hardest boss in the game, can be cheesed. Once you learn how to dodge a bosses attacks and where your window is for a counter attack, nothing is really that difficult. Due to the surplus of healing items in the game, you are able to take a hit or two from a boss, back off, pop a lifegem, wait a few seconds while dodging attacks, then reengage.

Overall, the game is far superior to most other games on the market. I would definitely recommend it. Just be warned that if you're expecting something identical to DS1, you may be a bit disappointed.

Items should scale with lvl as in borderlands. Game have its mood, and sound accompanying "you died" message will remain in your brain for long time. ;) Still, the game gets too easy as you pass ~60% mark, especially if you know what items you should look for and when you know which bosses you should beat twice in order to get pro eq. But I've sunk 288 hours into this game (according to Steam) before finally growing tired of it. It is an innately fun, frantic game, and the only reason I've grown tired of it is that I've started to memorize all the tricks and traps in every part of the game.

Back on topic. This game is hard. This game is fun. This game will knock you over and then kick you when you're down, and you will love it even more. I used a wired Xbox 360 controller, and everything felt very smooth and responsive. The combat was fluid. The music was decent. The story, like the previous games, was a little... strange? off? ...but the game was never really about the story.

My only serious complaint is that pvp is spotty. The hitboxes for many of the weapons are significantly larger than they really should be, and players sometimes manage to lag-teleport behind you for a backstab, despite whatever you try to do.

I heard mixed things, and eventually picked it up on Steam. Dark Souls 1 was a favorite of many hardcore gamers and so this one had high expectations to live up to. It met most of these expectations. While it improved on some aspects of Dark Souls 1 it also took some steps back. The port to PC is much improved this time around and it is much less hassle to get the game up and running without the horrid GFWL.

The storyline like DS1 is fragmented, and it is told through the interactions with the NPCS whom are more numerous this time around. The storyline isn't really forced on the gamer in the DS series and I don't pay much attention to lore in games anyway, but I have heard the lore is worse than the predecessor.

Being familiar with the DS1 feel I died many times till I got the hang of the feel of this one as it is a bit different. Once you get used to it though, it is very enjoyable. With a 360 controller the jump mechanic has changed but is still quite cumbersome to press the left stick as you run forward, and has resulted in me dying a few times. The kick mechanic has been replaced with a shield break and this was an interesting change.

While DS1 had excellent hitboxes, the hitboxes in DS2 are frustrating at times. You get hit sometimes when enemies clearly miss you visually from attacks that have no AoE. In a game where the slightest mistakes are so costly this can be quite problematic. The hitboxes for arrows are even worse with arrows getting blocked by obstructions that are not visually in the way. This is a minor part of the game though so not too big of a deal, but worth noting. Enemy tracking has been upped a few notches since DS1 for a few enemies and bosses. Enemies will change direction mid swing to counter you moving out of the way which is frustrating, and causes you to adapt more. Invincibility frames for rolling has been changed so you have less leeway to dodge when you roll out of the way of an enemy, and it now scales with a stat.

The durability mechanic has been greatly improved adding more depth to the game. Weapons degrade quickly but automatically repair upon refreshing at a bonfire. This means that it is a good idea to level up more than one weapon so you have a back up when the weapon gets close to breaking.

The world was very organic in DS1 with everything being interconnected. This is no longer the case, and while zones run into each other there is not this interconnected feel. Warping between bonfires can now be done from the start. This all does make it harder to get immersed in the atmosphere and while it is still ok, the atmosphere is superior in DS1.

Soul farming and twinking has been greatly discouraged this time around. Enemies have a limited number of respawns now discouraging farming them, and if you keep dying to a boss you won't have to kill all the regular enemies anymore leading up to it. The new soul memory mechanic calculates your total souls earned and matches you in pvp this way. While it prevents players leveling up being completely outmatched by twinks it makes it frustrating for those at higher soul memories who have been struggling. When you die and lose a lot of souls and fail to return to your bloodstain regaining them it is still calculated. This system makes it very frustrating on those that have struggled a lot in this way, and also those that do not spend their souls efficiently.

The game is still difficult, unfortunately much of the difficulty in this game is due to the game throwing many enemies at you at once more often than the first one. The game is slightly friendlier to those who are not familiar with the souls games while not making it too easy for seasoned players. This is a nice change. There are more options to heal now with the addition of lifegems. I personally find this a bit overkill as it causes me to be less careful about being hit, as they come in abundance. The boss difficulty as a whole has been lessened. I died many times to almost every boss in dark souls 1 before getting the hang of a strategy and downing them. This time around it only took me a few attempts at most for the majority of bosses. The bosses as a whole are less creative and memorable this time around.

The netcode leaves much to be desired with a lot of lag in pvp where players still hit you even after you have moved away. This is a big problem and happens in too many encounters. However finding summon signs, and getting into encounters is much improved over DS1.

The game is poorly balanced between playstyles. Casting builds have a much easier time in pve than melee does for the majority of bosses. This is quite frustrating.

Overall this is a great game but don't go in expecting it to be too much like DS1.

The worst entry in the Souls series is still leagues better than anything else I played in 2014. Where Dark Souls II lacks in atmosphere and intrigue, it makes up for with fluid controls and cheeky level design. I highly recommend a PS3 controller, but an XBox 360 controller will do in a pinch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having not played Dark Souls, or Demon Souls before it, I was not expecting much from Dark Souls II. However, I was quite wrong. This game not only doesn't tell you what you should do, but rather lets you decide. It doesn't say you must play the way it wants you to, you can play in a large variety of ways. My only complaint (and this is a personal complaint) is that during the Ruin Setinal boss fights, I had killed all but one of the Ruined Setinals. When I went to destroy the 100 or so health that boss had left, he killed me the same time one of the two people I had summoned killed him. I then had to fight these bosses all over again, even though the boss hit the ground before I did. Other than that, the game is well worth Steam's asking price of $50. Expand

I understand that not everybody wants to spend time and/or research to get a game running flawlessly, but compared to the odysseys we had to go through several years ago, a little time spent to make the game play as YOU want, instead of forcing yourself to play the way the game wants you, goes a long way.

That said, with a bit of AutoHotKey voodoo the controls are working great with mouse&keyboard. I do not use any graphical enhancements, because graphics only do little to improve actual gameplay. The gameplay is superb, I am hooked and already started more than 6 characters, which two of those I finished the game.
As with all versions of dark souls, the difficulty is high compared to other games, but in DS2 not so high as in DS, because now people got used to the gameplay and combat.
If you like medieval combat & fantasy, give this game a try, its worth it. For new players the starting area is by far the hardest part of the game, but when you got past that, the game shines and doesnt stop at impressing and challenging me.

Easier than its predecessor, less epic (bosses are not that awesome compared to the first dark souls), but they improved the combat system and the multiplayer part, one of the ebst game i ever played.

    What an amazing game.

The satisfaction that comes from beating a boss solo after failing again and again, and again, and again. There is no feeling like this in any other game. Because you know that each time you died you got a little better. And even though the bosses seemed at first impossible, they were in their own way still fair. I didn't give it a perfect 10 because of the online pvp issues. Hackers are abundant and I don't like that pvp is sometimes forced. I enjoy pvp but I did not enjoy some of the mechanics that promoted ganking like the bell tower or certain areas of the game.

Still a classic, and could very well be one of the best series of all time.

Love dark souls 2. If you are into melee fighting you must buy it. Great bosses, great mechanics, nice armors, pvp is interesting. and beautiful dark locations. Lots of replay ability.

Do not be disheartened by the other low reviews, this game is a lot of fun. If you do indeed run into problems and or bugs, what many people seem to not understand is that the internet ie google will fix them in no time. The game is a solid 8.5, not the best, would be amazing if there was a hint of story.
If you try to play with keyboard you will fail.

Really fun but sometimes it's bull if you know what I mean, wish the death was a little less harsh but really fun you know. There's a sound bug on the lightning guy so cover your ears

I like Dark Souls II, and although the game doesn't surpass the original, it is certanly a worthy sucessor. Asside from that i really had fun while playing it, it was a chalenging experience with some good memories to take from it, and the first time i remember having to struggle to defeat a boss in a long time (since Dark Souls a least).
    I recomend it

The game is a masterpiece for the hardcore gamers! Normally the first game of the series is the best and the rest go down the hill but this one I pre-ordered and loved it. I played it with an Xbox controller and was just fine. Can't say anything about the story, since it's Dark Souls, you don't know what to do or where to go!

The first game was GREAT and this game improves/fixes many of the issues with the first game. PvP is more balanced than ever before after a few patches. The PvE part of the game is excellent and I highly recommenced getting the DLC... it actually gets better with each new part added!

In all honesty, dark souls 2 has some issues. From bizarre scaling to the broken co-op. But really, this game wasn't made to be played with friends. The atmosphere is phenomenal. The overall quality of gameplay and replayability I would rate among some of the best I have ever played. I get frustrated and say I will never play again. This game has something most games are missing these days, challenge. It is a shining example of how just the right amount of difficulty can make a game accessible, without making it impossible or unfair. I have 100's of hours in Dark Souls 2 and plan on a few hundred more. Fantastic game. Expand

Firstly, this is not a game for people who desire entertainment from a mainstream source. Dark Souls II is a punishing game, that rewards your mistimed slash with a huge loss of health. Every single hit counts in Dark Souls 2, and every mistake will prove to be hugely fatal.

The combat is not entirely fun, per se, but relies more on timing than anything. Deciding to parry or block would signify a change in pacing. There is no certain path to choose in DS II, and it definitely does not hold your hand through the beginning, and the control scheme for people using keyboards may find it difficult to adjust. To say the least, there is a steep learning curve. The story, is somewhat original and is interesting, but it's not given to the player in a cohesive way that RPGs are meant to give. Nevertheless, the game is addicting, and will attract hardcore gamers from all genres. I would recommend this game to hardcore RPG fans, as well as people who would want a challenge.

Now I'm just gonna go ahead and say I have the game for both console and PC and let me just say that the game is phenomenal, it is a truly amazing game, sure there are a lot of bad things about the game as well as there are good things but let me lay it down like this.

    The Pros are as follows;
1.Co-op - Haters come at me but co-op is amazing and especially fulfilling in this game, sure it's less hardcore to go in with a friend but at least in this DS2 they improve the functionality of co-op by adding the name engraved ring (It allows you to pick a specific server to make co-oping with friends easier). Now say you are struggling and being destroyed by a boss that you just cant seem to get past and you're close to giving up, boom you can summon other players from their worlds and they can help you, sometimes teaching you new secrets as well such as hidden walls and other things throughout the area before the boss.
2.The Story - Now don't you dare tell me that there is no story because there is, it's difficult to find the story because there is no narrator feeding you the story like other typical games, items tell you snippets of the lore behind characters or places, the story itself is really interesting and very in depth, although there are some unexplained things but the story is something unique in itself, if you want to know the lore without the hassle, look up a Youtuber called epicnamebro, he'll tell you all you need to know.
3.The PVP - Yes there are hackers, yes there are people who troll and do cheap tactics, but that doesn't matter, you can knock hackers into lava or into an abyss or do other kinds of things to get rid of them or simply overcome the cheap or troll with sheer skill which makes it that much more satisfying. The PVP is fun, seeing other peoples characters with different cool armour combinations or weapon setups is genuinely interesting and you can do some really cool setups to stand out. There are certain areas that are intended for PVP like the Door of Pharros which is a labyrinth where you force other players to invade you and you can set traps using lockstones to make it harder but I won't tell you how to exactly do that.
4.Combat - Now there are different styles to combat such as dual wielding and power stancing which make dull weapons like daggers much more interesting with extra move sets, but that's best left for another time. There is a huge combat variation, you could be a defensive turtle who likes to cast pyromancies while wielding a giant club bearing heavy armour, you could be a hexer who also uses sorceries, miracles and pyromancies which would make you a true spell user and give you huge variety in spells. Or you could be a deadly assassin type character with high Dexterity and a fully upgraded dagger to critical hit your opponent to death, the choice is up to you.

There is more but I am limited with space so I'll move on to the cons

    The Cons are as follows;
1.Graphics - Now before anyone slaps me in the face saying the graphics are decent or they aren't an issue I fully understand that, I mean I play the game on Xbox so lets be real here, the game does have a lot of textures that are just copy+pasted on walls or on ceilings or even on the floor but the games graphic beauty comes from the bosses, the equipment and the cloth textures (which aren't the best but I like them), but I think it might be an aesthetic thing since Demon Souls and Dark Souls pretty much look the same.
2.Network - The networks suck lets face it, people have issues all the time with trying to play with other players or disconnecting during fights and things like that. If your connection is good however then you shouldn't have any lag issues unless the other guy is from Japan of course or if they have bad internet, at least it's an improvement on Dark Souls.
3.Difficulty - No I am not complaining about how the game is too hard or anything like that, I am complaining about how the game is too easy...at least on the first playthrough, granted that the game gets harder but because of a bunch of babies who complained about Dark Souls 1 being too hard, From Software decided to dumb it down a lot to make the game more accessible for the casual gamers, some bosses were genuinely difficult (Smelter Demon took me at least 6 tries before getting it right) but some were a joke like that Jabba the Hutt looking thing in Harvest Valley.
Music - There is barely any music in the game bar some boss music and that honestly disappoints me, I know it's not been a staple of the series but something for the sake of ambience would be nice. Just a personal little gripe though.

This is gaming from a GENUINE gamer who actually bought the game 2 days after release and has played it thoroughly and will be buying the DLC later this week. Also to the people who gave this a low rating, stop being a fricking moron and buy a gamepad for the game, it's obvious that it's going to be stupidly difficult on keyboard. Amateurs.

Then there's problems in comparasion with the original Dark Souls:
    - Combat mechanics changed, some weapon classes are now utterly useless (Scythe, ...)
    - Agility & invulnerability frames are a plague.
    - Bad level & world design.
    - Alot of recycling of enemies. Too many "guys with big swords".
    - Bonfire travel mechanic due to bad world design.
    - Somewhat boring bosses. At least 20 of those 35ish bosses are really simple and often even recycled as well.
    - And the list goes on..

But especially to people that've never played the first game this will be a great game, for all others probably slightly less.

This game has extremely vague objectives, ridiculous difficulty, wonky hit detection, almost no exposition and frame rate issues (on 360 as far as i know). That being said it is by far the most satisfying game i have ever played, the deepest game i have ever played and probably the hardest.
