The oncoming enemies can also pack weaponry so strategic selection and placement of your cubemen is critical for your success. In skirmish mode the game becomes even more entertaining with the addition of an enemy commander which will command it's own tower-like cubemen. You also get the basic foot soldiers that will mindlessly attack the enemy base every round. The wide variety of maps make up the majority of the difficulty differences, along with a couple other changes. This is a great little game and well worth the couple bucks it costs. Expand

The multiplayer drags on for hours and is boring, also as Yahtzee said "A game has to stand up on singleplayer." The game needs a level editor bad at this point.

To summarize, it is mediocre at best.

This is a fun little strategy RTS/defense game mix well worth playing. It's not exceptional - so score is a 7 - but it's very good at what it does. It has some tower defense elements, but it's more of an RTS. You have little "cubemen" with different abilities that are your towers - a grunt, a flamethrower, a mortar, medic, rocket launcher, laser, sniper, and "slow down/temporal" guy. I'm a big fan of Defense Grid's tower defense, but this is different in that you can move your troops around the battlefield (vs. stationary in tower defense). You're still protecting your base, but you can move your troops around the battlefield, take positions, advance/withdraw, take cover, etc in you efforts to kill the enemy. Often you'll be at endgame camping on the home base(s) of the bad guys (you can't just take their base - you just shoot them all when they come out, but that's an OK if not an exciting ending to a level. The difficulty curve is a little tough right at the start, but I found many of the medium/hard levels easier than the 3rd level of the game. So don't get discouraged - just give it a bit and learn how your pieces work. There are a couple levels at the end that I couldn't beat and just weren't fun to play even in losing - and I think I've thrown in the towel on those (one called Circuit and the other which is the very last level)- but generally this has been a fun game up to this point, and that's what matters. I found the controls simple (all mouse) and gameplay normally at a very manageable pace. I notice some comments have said the game had too much micromanagement, but I didn't find that to be the case at all. At least with the strategies and methods I used I found the ease of use good and interface to be very well thought out. I did find myself clicking and moving a whole lot on the two levels that I mentioned above that I couldn't win - but I wonder if I've just been playing them wrong. Most levels aren't that way and are strategic in a tower defense sense in that you use the terrain and barriers to your advantage when you can, and try to pick the right trooper for the right geography / situation. Then secure that area, and advance to your next key area to take. I also had fun building quite a few levels (maybe 6 or 7 so far) with the user level editor. Yep - you can build your own maps and play them. Very cool - and very easy to use interface for doing so. If you like building with Legos you'll probably like building your own levels. Note there are other game modes including multiplayer options that I haven't played yet, but may do so soon. One other thing I liked alot is that the developer participated in the forums on Steam talking to the players. I liked the game anyway - but it's cool he was there listening to comments also. Bottom line. Very cool game. If you're in the least bit interested it's worth a play. I had fun with it. Expand

Well presented and I like the idea but there's way too much micromanagement involved to keep your guys alive. For me, it's taken the very worst aspects of RTS games and merged it with a TD game.

That said, if you really, really love RTS games with a lot of micro management, you'll probably enjoy it.

This is a solid tower defense game for the retail price of $4.99. As the previous reviewer stated, you use cubemen instead of towers to hold your defense. You are trying to prevent the enemy from making it to your home base. The elements in the game are quite simplistic, which make it a lot of fun. There are multiple modes of play from defense to skirmish against human players or AI, and four different difficulties ranging from easy, medium, hard, and insane. Some levels take time to figure out which strategy will work to win. I give the game a 9 for price point, level of fun, and replay value. Expand

Fun for the first half an hour or so, but the gameplay is extremely unbalanced, and quickly devolves into tediousness. Painfully difficult unless you can keep your clicks above 300/minute and don't mind a game that simply involves moving all your men back and forwards rapidly to avoid the flurry of overpowerd grenades.

Its all right, but its kinda boring. Multi-player can go on forever! The graphics are not amazing, but they don't look bad. Looks like art was made in flash and flash looks better than like Half Life 1. Level design has some obvious thought behind it.

Its made by one dude fyi

A useless waste of time, with crummy graphics that attempts to make a quick cash grab at the popularity behind Minecraft. Don't waste your money, it'd be better spent buying paint and watching it dry.

Wonderful game, simple yet really fun. A lot of content, replay value, free updates and a dedicated developer. For $5 this game is an absolute steal, so.. what are you waiting for? Go for it!

Fantastically unique take on tower defence, especially in multiplayer or skirmish modes where you can in essence play as both attacker and defender at the same time (much as you would in a game like DOTA 2 or LoL)

A fresh take on tower defense games. Cubemen is a beautiful game which makes you think on your feet and offers a variety of game modes. It's a solid tower defense game at best. It might be addicting for a while but it quickly gets old and I don't think it's something you would keep coming back for unlike other similar games like 'BTD.' Still though, it's worth a shot if you like tower defense games.

A good tower-defense type game, also with lots of game modes. It's nothing revolutionary but for its price and within it's genre boundaries and it's pretty much solid. Giving it only 6 because cmon there is just too many tower defense games already.

Cubemen is the best TOWER DEFENSE game what i have ever played! It is just a simple game but it's really cool and fun. You can edit your own and your opponent's character and level theme. You can make now own maps too with a level editor and download players' maps. And the game has many classes too and 3 gamemodes what you can play on singleplayer and MULTIPLAYER!

When I saw the trailer for this game I was looking forward to buying it. It combined two of my favorite genres: RTS and tower defense. When I finally bought it I was somewhat disappointed. And the various game mods were satisfying (skirmish in particular is really fun to play against friends) not to mention the good amount of maps to play on and a good map editor, and I am pretty excited to see what the community will come up with. Not to mention that it's a good tower defense game. And I stress tower defense. The main mechanic of the game, which is to be able to move your cubemen around the map after being placed was executed quite poorly. I found myself not needing to change their position at all in the majority of maps included in the game. Not to mention that there is only one song that loops over, and over, and over and gets really annoying after a while. There is very little customization other than being able to change the colour of your cubemen. My final verdict, is a 7 out of 10. This is not a bad game by all means. It's a good tower defense game, and the maps where the RTS elements work are really fun. This game would have been a five or a six out of ten if it weren't for the map editor. But even with all it's flaws, I'd recommend this game to fans of tower defense fans and fans of RTS games looking for something different. Expand

Decente juego tower defense, con un diseño de niveles bastante simple pero divertido a la vez. Varios tipos de soldados y con bastante personalización. Posibilidad de crear niveles o descargártelo de internet. Nada mal.

Cubemen's simplicity is of the arrogant, even brash kind. [June 2012, p.95]
