Sandbox shooter it's how it's supposed to be. Plus graphics are still better than most games.

I can only play this game on medium detail, I have a low profile case, and as such I don't have the greatest GFX card in the world. I use a ATI Radeon HD 4650. I will say however, on medium, this game looks great compared to most of the titles I have on the XBOX 360, and compared to most of the titles I have on the PC. It plays smooth, and I'm pleased with performance. It only helps to know that when I upgrade my computer a few months from now the game will scale up to it, unlike most of my titles. As far as game play, I don't understand what people really are talking about. This is what keeps me playing this game over 2 years after I have bought it. I love the fact that having a suit with only 4 options gives me so many ways to approach a situation. The enemy AI seems to act appropriately for most of my actions, but there are a few times I have to scratch my head. The plot was fine with me. Off the wall, yes... But gave the game a creepy feel to it, and kind of made the game two separate experiences with the same multitude of options to solve each. Overall, I just found this game fun. I've become kind of immune to the FPS craze, and while I've played games like Modern Warfare 2, and all the Halo games, Crysis is still the pinnacle of fun to me. Giving me the option to run and gun, or stand in the middle of a Korean Base fully cloaked. My one complaint, and it is a complaint in most games, the vehicles drive like cardboard boxes. In fact, the only fun I had was with the tank level, only because it was the only vehicle in the game that drove like it should. I definitely recommend this game. Just don't expect to get the highest settings out of it, but know that the game is fun and very playable at lower settings. Expand

The gameplay, too, is decent as it allows you to tackle each level and specific problem strategically, rather than the plain linear style of other shooters. This also means that dying is not a frustrating event, as when you respawn you can simply try a different route or tactic, rather than having to keep trying the same thing. The problem with the game is that after you enjoy fighting the Koreans on the surface of the island, you have to move underground and face the aliens that the game is based around in a slightly dull collection of levels. However, despite the fact that this part cannot match the incredible start of the game, it doesn't ruin the game like people say and it does feel necessary for the plot. Expand

This is one of the best FPS singleplayer campaigns out there. Enemies are varied enough to never feel like its the same thing over and over, the maps are big enough to shy away from the usual corridor feel, the graphics are awesome, the physics are very good, the story works very well. All in all it is a very solid game, and, if you don't have it yet, why are you reading about it here? go fetch!

The successors to this game might have achieved better scores if they had stuck with the open-world style used in the first installment of the series. Some sections can get a bit tedious (travelling long distances without getting spotted can take time) and a few things are poorly designed. For example when the game script wants you to do a particular thing, like battle a helicopter or stay in a particular area to finish a task, the script will give super-human abilities to your enemy who will then spot you through walls, trees and mountains (Halflife 2 does this as well so it may just be a way game designers force the player to stay on track). But at the and of the day it is a pleasent game, and one I have enjoyed completing more than once. Expand

I didn't enjoy the alien combat but when the first 75% of the game is so damn good, I don't mind that much. I'm sure that people would be complaining that the game was the same through out if it hadn't been included. The suit is very useful and innovative. I got used to it quickly and it makes other games feel very basic in comparison. The AI is passable (ie, being able to do everything they should be able to do whilst still allowing you to run up to them, grab them by the neck and toss them otno the nearest land-mine). Awww... okay. Back to the graphics. After half Life 2 I didn't think I would be impressed by graphics again. I was wrong. It ADDS to the game. There are some areas which have real personality. I swear that I've been to that industrial ruin place (just before the alien bit starts) and the entire game really has a sense of 'place'. You never feel that you're in a level. It covers up the linearity well and brings games on to the next level. Ignore the naysayers. They're probably comparing this game to real life or something, as there is no other game to compare it to yet. (Graphics-wise. The gameplay is always a matter of personal opinion but I feel they did a very good job. I just wish enemies took fewer hits to die- I guess it's the bad side of having so many different choices and strategies to approach them.). Expand

I was however frustrated at the hit detection or lack thereof as well as the huge amount force required to fall ones foe, ammo is scarce, demanding conservation however enemies are indeed very difficult to kill and in some cases seem to offer no resemblance to an actual human body sometimes taking what seems as an entire magazine of ammunition before falling to what seems like bleeding to death or starvation. On the other hand explosives offer what seems as an underpowered effect on enemies and overpowered effect on vehicles, it is reasonable to expect in this title to drop a grenade on a truck with enemy very close and expect a spectacular wreck and all of your enemy standing, multiple grenade types do not alleviate this concern because their very nature is unfitting to the game scheme, a flash bang in an open environment with enemies peppered on the map seems almost pointless other than to simply piss off all of the enemies outside the range of the weapon. While 95% of the time you'll just be using the large array of weapons, there is more of a feeling of satisfaction when you kill a KPA by throwing hens and sticks at him. The four suit modes (Armor, Speed, Strength, and Cloak) create new ways to approach a situation. You could either run and gun in armor mode, pick them off one by one with your speed and rocket off before they have a chance to shoot you, beat the living **** out of them, or go for the stealthy approach and sneak around to flank. The game still has a feeling of lineage through the pseudo-sandbox gameplay, but there is enough variation to keep it interesting through the entire game, and even another playthrough. The AI could use some minor work, but there were only a few incidents where it was as bad as many people say. The graphics are amazing, and this goes without saying. Even to today's standards they are slightly above par. Not a game to play on your family Pentium 3 computer, it does require a nice graphics card to get the most out of it. The game is not perfect however. The physics sometimes likes to glitch ie, on a few occasions i will touch a large moving object and be instantly killed. It's a minor problem considering how infrequently it occurs, and since you can quicksave any time, a death won't set you back that far (provided you save). The storyline is solid, and I have no major qualms with it. The characters are likeable, and don't whine too much about your performance. The unveiling of the true enemies is done very well, and creates an air of suspense throughout the first third of the game. The game has no major problems other than the few aforementioned glitches and iffy AI. Personally, I found the game to be quite difficult. I played through on Normal difficulty and found it to be quite a challenge. Something that got quite frustrating was that there is a lot going on at once, and a lot to keep track of which spells frequent deaths. There are a few "Are you f*cking kidding me!?" moments which are frustrating. However, the difficulty does give you a feeling of accomplishment when you do succeed. Crysis is an intriguing masterpiece with only a few minor problems, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the FPS genre. Most decent gaming computers should be able to run the game on at least medium settings. For a reference point I played the game on an i7 720QM (1.6Ghz), 8Gb RAM, Mobility Radeon 5870 1Gb DDR5, and I played on high settings with 2x AA 1650 x 1050 and got very acceptable fps (30 or higher) except during a few graphics intensive scenes of the game. I believed that FPS genre has reached a point where there is not much room for innovation, especially after Portal. Crysis for me, took action FPS in a new direction.

Crysis is set in the year 2019. Us scientists have made some significant discoveries on one of Lingshan Islands. The North Korean government then goes on to seal the island and hold several American citizens in custody. Raptor Team, a US Army Special Forces unit is sent to rescue the scientists. This was not a war but a rescue mission. However, things turn nasty when they discover that they are not just fighting the Koreans, but extra terrestrial life as well.

As a part of the special forces unit, the player, i.e. Nomad, gets to use a nano suit. This suit gives the player the ability to use speed, stealth and strength. These functions are seamlessly integrated into the game. After a while, switching between different functions is so natural and intuitive. The suit changes the way the game is played. It can be used to employ different strategies to take out enemies. The semi sandbox nature of the game allows for a lot of freedom in the initial levels.

Combinations of abilities will lead to some very interesting gameplay moments. The same scenario can be played differently depending on the gameplay of choice, either use stealth throughout, or run and gun, or a little bit of both.

I would call a game immersive when I tend to keep playing and forget to quick save. This happened to me a lot in Crysis. I kept going and I never really saved. If I died, I was happy replaying from the last save point, and trying a different approach. Personally, I have not had that kind of immersion in a very long time.

Let me make this very clear, this is not Far Cry with better visuals. Far Cry is a good game, but this is way better. I played this game on hard difficulty, and I found it to be challenging and fun.

Destined to be a classic, Crysis is a creative and technological marvel that eclipses every other shooter released this year. [Holiday 2007, p.60]
  2. Crysis thrives on putting the onus on you to create your own brand of action and adventure in its stunningly beautiful locations. You and the game can haphazardly create moments of such gaming brilliance that often you pretty much have to stand up and applaud. [Christmas 2007, p.44]
