I guess because Crysis raises the bar in so many other areas, people begin expecting its story to live up to a different set of standards--rather than comparing it to the stories present in the entire spectrum of FPS's, they instead compare its story to the kinds of stories told in other game genres, like RPGs. I liked Crysis' story. It didn't eclipse my favorite RPG's story, but then, I'd be an idiot to expect it to and then complain when it doesn't. All I gotta say is, MAN, this game is freaking AWESOME. I'm pretty good at stealth manipulation and marksmanship, though, so I'm going to be looking for small ways to mod the game so that it's even harder than it was on Delta Mode. Maybe make the health never regenerate? We'll see. If you can run it, and at great settings, GET THIS GAME NOW. You will NOT regret it. Expand

A very good game. Vehicle controls take a bit to get used to, and the higher difficulties are really hard, but it is a game that forces you to think to survive, and isn't just a straight-up run and gun game. Yes, the story is shallow, but the graphics and gameplay more than make up for that.

Graphically this is the most impressive game to date. What's most amazing is that underneath all that gloss there's actually substance to back it all up. With an excellent single player (*which by all means cries out for replay value) and an innovative multiplayer all in one package. This is definitely the best FPS of the year.

I thought this was just going to be another graphics showcase like a lot of new games are, but I was surprised to find substantial story elements and fantastically fun gameplay. Granted, the story isn't Half-Life 2 but it actually develops throughout the game and easily exceeds the likes of the ever-popular Halo series. The graphics are without a doubt the best ever made, and provided you don't run it with antialiasing on (which doesn't make a big difference in this game anyways) the game runs pretty smooth. Don't expect to be able to run it in all very high DX10 without the latest and greatest cuz there's no denying that it was built for next-gen hardware. I run it on a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz, 768 mb ram, and 256 mb Radeon 9600xt which are all under minimum requirements and I get an average fps of around 20, so it seems like people are overbitching. The AI contrary to what many people say, I found quite good. If you snipe an enemy with a silencer, other enemies won't react until they see the corpse. They'll try to flank you, take cover, and what's really interesting is if you shoot with a silencer at an object behind an enemy, that enemy will react to the sound, caused by the impact of the bullet, and look back to see if someone is out there. It's not the greatest game ever, but it's damn close. The multiplayer is fun but it's not anything revolutionary, although i found the vehicle-based gameplay more fast-paced and fun in the long run than the battlefield series. Far Cry was good, this is a masterpiece! Expand

(They're undeniably the best in any game so far, despite being released a year ago.) The gameplay is very good. The alien bit a the end was poor in comparison. I didn't enjoy the alien combat but when the first 75% of the game is so damn good, I don't mind that much. I'm sure that people would be complaining that the game was the same through out if it hadn't been included. The suit is very useful and innovative. I got used to it quickly and it makes other games feel very basic in comparison. The AI is passable (ie, being able to do everything they should be able to do whilst still allowing you to run up to them, grab them by the neck and toss them otno the nearest land-mine). Awww... okay. Back to the graphics. After half Life 2 I didn't think I would be impressed by graphics again. I was wrong. It ADDS to the game. There are some areas which have real personality. I swear that I've been to that industrial ruin place (just before the alien bit starts) and the entire game really has a sense of 'place'. You never feel that you're in a level. It covers up the linearity well and brings games on to the next level. Ignore the naysayers. They're probably comparing this game to real life or something, as there is no other game to compare it to yet. (Graphics-wise. The gameplay is always a matter of personal opinion but I feel they did a very good job. I just wish enemies took fewer hits to die- I guess it's the bad side of having so many different choices and strategies to approach them.). Expand

Crytek, even though there games look similar, make completely different games (about the tropical enviroments, who doesn't like to fight on a lush jungle island?). It plays smooth, and I'm pleased with performance. It only helps to know that when I upgrade my computer a few months from now the game will scale up to it, unlike most of my titles. As far as game play, I don't understand what people really are talking about. This is what keeps me playing this game over 2 years after I have bought it. I love the fact that having a suit with only 4 options gives me so many ways to approach a situation. The enemy AI seems to act appropriately for most of my actions, but there are a few times I have to scratch my head. The plot was fine with me. Off the wall, yes... But gave the game a creepy feel to it, and kind of made the game two separate experiences with the same multitude of options to solve each. Overall, I just found this game fun. I've become kind of immune to the FPS craze, and while I've played games like Modern Warfare 2, and all the Halo games, Crysis is still the pinnacle of fun to me. Giving me the option to run and gun, or stand in the middle of a Korean Base fully cloaked. My one complaint, and it is a complaint in most games, the vehicles drive like cardboard boxes. In fact, the only fun I had was with the tank level, only because it was the only vehicle in the game that drove like it should. I definitely recommend this game. Aside from graphics the game's plot does need a little work. Unbelievably, Crytek has not pandered to the console generation crowd. This is a pure PC FPS in the finest tradition of Far Cry, Stalker, Rainbow Six, Half life, and even Doom. The shooting is hard. If you aren't aiming properly you are going to miss at medium-long ranges. That's what's happening with people that claim it takes a whole clip to take down an enemy. Out of every ten rounds wildly sprayed about will 5 actually hit (probably in the legs and arms), and chances are a silencer is being used, and silencers halve the weapon damage at close range and completely eliminating it at long range. If you want to take down soldiers with COD speed, you need to remove your silencer, go prone, and preferably attach a scope. Then switch to single shot and use maximum strength for good measure to steady your aim. Oh yeah and if your target is moving you have to lead to account for the fact the game models bullet travel time. It's a little more complicated than the run and gun you usually see, and I applaud Crytek for including great feeling shooting mechanics. The AI here sets the bar for all other shooters to come. The sense that you are fighting coordinated enemy squads which flank, retreat and lay down suppressive fire is not reviled anywhere else. By comparison the other big FPS released recently doesn't even seem to do anything but suicide rush. Sure there are bugs, but on Delta prepare to be outsmarted and outfought on a fair basis - you never feel the AI is cheating. The suit powers are amazingly well balanced and supremely useful. Using the mouse button menu to switch powers was a stroke of genius. There is nothing like using maximum speed to run up to a soldier, grab him, and use max strength you throw him off a cliff. Pure unadulterated awesome sauce. The linear sections of the endgame perhaps don't have the sense of gameplay innovation that the first 2/3rds do, but this is made up with some incredible environments and enemies which I don't want to spoil. Storywise . . . well it's no HL2 or Stalker, and it never claimed to be. The story is unpretentious, workmanlike and does its job motivating you and keeping you on track. The only other game in recent memory that comes close to Crysis is Stalker, with its open environments and incredible atmosphere. Both are masterpieces, but Stalker's initial bugs hold it back from being my GOTY pick. Ultimately, as others have stated, Crysis like no other game offers you a blank canvas on which you can paint your unique brand of mayhem and destruction. With Crysis your creativity is the limiting factor. Expand

Graphics are jaw-dropping, gameplay is fluid and satisfying, and the game is actually engaging in the sense that you'll get into your on-screen character's skin and feel the rush of sneaking up to the enemy in complete silence, all senses wide awake. The sound is also unrivalled, with very sharp use of muffling and echo that makes it all totally immersive. I had to pause the game at one particular point : I had just fired a rocket at a distant helicopter from a ledge, jumped down and landed in a small pond. The very moment I went underwater, my teammates' chatter was muted but I could still hear the muffled gunfire and most importantly, the loud rumble of that damn helicopter blowing up. I was constantly relying on sound cues to track enemies and map my surroundings. Finally the game itself flowed gracefully from one scene to the next. It was almost Halo-like in its pace and carefully dosed excitement. I only have one point of criticism and that is the little interlude in the alien ship, floating in a disorienting anti-gravity hell overfilled with annoying jellyfish-like beasties. That part felt very stressful and out of place, but it only made the escape that much more liberating. It is open-ended, it can be played in any number of fashions, be it stealth mode, or run and gun, and above all else, it's fun. The story may be cliched, but executed very nicely nonetheless. Really, nothing much different than how HL2, Halo, or any other number of FPS games stories have played out. So if we are going to fault Crysis for that, then get in line and start docking points for the rest of those games too. The AI is something else people may take issue with, but please name me one game, just one game, of this caliber, of this level of technical brilliance, this OPEN-ENDED, that has AI which supercedes this. People can't, and yet they have this unrealistic expectation when it comes to Crysis. I guess that's because it's the most realistic looking game of all time, the best physics of all time, and if I may be so bold, the 5.1 surround sound also sounds very immersive as well, so perhaps the AI may be lacking in light of these other achievements, but even then, it's better than any AI to date for a game of this type/scale. Though simular to Farcry in many ways, Crysis is a breakthrough in gaming. The suit with powers, the weapons, the graphics, and the gameplay were all up to par with cod4, UT3, Timeshift, and HL2 episode 2. I was worried that the game would eat my comp up for breakfast, but turns out I was able to max almost all the options aside from some shading and anti aliasing. With all these great games comming out, I'm putting my money twords Crysis. Some say this is just another Farcry, but I say its a step up in gaming! Expand

The game is fairly realistic and on the harder difficulties forces you to use your suits powers to survive. A.I. is a challenge but with a few glitches hopefully fixed by the second patch. And to all those who say the A.I. is subpar when was the last time CoD4 didn't funnel you down a hallway where the bots could do no wrong. You can play this game anyway you like a lone wolf stealth character or a guns a blazing Rambo Style badass. In the late game they introduce Alien critters which honestly we could of down without the no grav situations are really cool but the game then quickily becomes CoD4 not a bad thing but with the total amount of freedom Crytek gives you in the first 2/3rds of the game it is a let down . Also all of the 0's im assuming are from console fanboys who want the game to fail the lowest score a sane person could give this game would be a 7 maybe a 6. In the end you don't have to listen to any reviewers score of Crysis that doesn't really matter just download the demo which is the well best described as the first level giving you an introduction to the game, the cheesy as hell story, and amazing gameplay. However, in this case, I think the 7.7/10 is entirely unwarranted. Although not without flaw, Crysis is a spectacular game. The nanosuit is inovative and fun, and both the island and winter effects are done to perfection. But what is absolutely breathtaking are the graphics. The game was ahead of its time, and remains probably the most demanding and impressive GFX experience 2 years after its release. Not often that can be said of a game. Having played FarCry2 and other recent games, and liked them, I still have to say Crysis has a higher 'wow' factor. I just built a new computer (i7 + 6gb ddr3 + radeon 4890) and I am replaying the game in 1900x1080xhigh detail. It is as if I had been blind and now I can see again. I will probably finish the game once again just to see all the various levels in this resolution. The attention to detail is painstaking. There are little frogs jumping around in the marshes. Flocks of gulls can be shot at, and if you get one, the bird falls limp from the sky. Trees can be destroyed, and you can level most buildings. Sorry guys, its just beautiful. 10/10 for me even 2 years later. Expand

Combines the best elements of Halo, Half life, CoD, and of course Far Cry. Cutscenes are graphic and jaw-dropping. The feeling of war is only rivaled by Halo and to a lesser extent CoD. The story and the plot twists is rivaled by only Half Life. Gameplay it defeats all of them, so many ways to complete objectives. Graphic wise it dominates EVERY SINGLE GAME period. Good day!

I honestly didn't believe this game would exceed my expectations. Perhaps due to being so often dissapointed in the past, I assumed Crysis would just be a pretty looking update to Far Cry, and at first glance that is what you get. However, deeper into the single player campaign you are faced with very high octane action sequences that feel more like they are coming from you, then I honestly didn't believe this game would exceed my expectations. However, deeper into the single player campaign you are faced with very high octane action sequences that feel more like they are coming from you, then scripted sequences around you. The level design is still cleverly linear, however never seems to feel that way, giving you insane amount of choice on how you tackle objectives. Once you get past the overwhelming sense of openness, and instead focus on achieving your goal instead of trying to explore everything first, you'll be set for some very intense action. I definitely see myself playing through multiple times to try different approaches to situations. Of course, everything has already been said about the graphics. However, if you find you are struggling running it at anything less then High, i suggest you just play a diffrent game, and wait for the console release as you'll definitely be missing alot of what makes this game so immersing. No mid-end gaming rig can run this on maximum settings at the moment, however if you are fortunate to have a Quad Core based system, and perhaps a new 8800 GT (or two) the game will play very smoothly at high settings. I've even tweaked some more features that are only available in the maximum settings, such as sunshafts, color grading, parallax occlusion mapping, and SSAO (something to do with adding soft shading around objects) which add ALOT of depth to the games graphics. With these enabled, Its the first true next-gen looking game. Finally, the multilayer seems very in depth, and objective based, and makes the recent Quake Wars look like Team Fortress 1. I'm looking forward to playing some more. Anyone giving this game a score below 7 has either not played it or does not have a machine to do it justice. ... Now if Far Cry 2 is half as good as this. Destined to be a classic, Crysis is a creative and technological marvel that eclipses every other shooter released this year. [Holiday 2007, p.60]
  2. Crysis thrives on putting the onus on you to create your own brand of action and adventure in its stunningly beautiful locations. You and the game can haphazardly create moments of such gaming brilliance that often you pretty much have to stand up and applaud. [Christmas 2007, p.44]
