What was the point of this game? If it’s a game about cats, why is there so few typical cat activities? And if it’s a game about humans – why do they act so unnatural? It feels as if the writer’s knowledge about human interaction was all book-learned. [Issue#265, p.61]

Copycat’s linear cozy feline simulator is a far too tame to measure up to its own in-game wildlife ambitions, though its playful yet emotional story might purr its way into an animal lover’s.

Copycat has visual charm and enjoyable cat-based gameplay, but with a short runtime and poorly executed story, it isn’t worth your time, especially if you love cats.

Despite some troubled animations and controls, Copycat plays its emotional journey excellently. As a cat owner and someone who has lived somewhat similar events in recent times, its tale of love and loss hit hard, but was a journey worth taking.

Copycat perfectly encapsulates the feeling of self-doubt, fear and hesitance that comes with building a close relationship with another individual. Although the narrative is told through the eyes of a cat, its message is universal and urges players to accept love and nurture one another regardless of differences. The technical side of the game was buggy at certain parts of the story during my playthrough, but the game truly flourishes when it centers around storytelling.

Arty games like Copycat are two a penny, but clearly this one is one that’s had some serious effort put into it. Atmospheric and poignant, Dawn’s chronicles will tug on your heartstrings like a Spanish guitarist – and most likely make you want to hold your own cat as close as you can if you have one. Amidst the many cat games that the industry has birthed, this one is definitely one of the finer felines of the litter.

If you're looking for an action packed game, then this will not be your cup of tea. However, if you are after a game with a wonderfully emotional narrative that players can experience at a gentle pace, then Copycat is worth a look. As you explore your surroundings as Dawn, you will realise that the game has a truer and more meaningful purpose than it seems at first. With simple controls, it is easy to adjust to the flow of the game, roaming the house as a cat whilst listening to the heartwarming score. It is clear that the developers have poured their hearts into Copycat. I now wonder how my cat Sunshine would feel about another cat taking her place.

Copycat is a uniquely cat-perspective narrative game that tells a heartwarming and, at times, heart-wrenching story that cat lovers and owners should resonate with. However, it is a bit weak on the gameplay side and will often hold your hand and guide you through the story it wants you to experience.

If you own or take care of a pet – or if you have kids who’d like a pet – do yourself a favor and play Copycat in one sitting. Make sure you have tissues ready.

A passion project led by a small group of dedicated developers, Copycat delivers an emotionally driven tale about the nature of home, belonging and change. In spite of the occasional thematic misstep and limited replayability value, Copycat is both an enjoyable and reflective piece of art that's worth your time. Whether bapping gnomes off walls or wrestling with deep feelings, you'll feel moved throughout this short-but-sweet feline adventure.

Copycat shoots for the stars with its narrative ambitions, delivering an emotional, introspective experience that will have you reflecting on your relationship to the animals and people in your life. It goes to some truly unexpected places, some of which are questionable, but all of which are compelling. Despite the pieces not quite coming together in perfect harmony, this is an experience that will stick with you for a long time.
