This debate rage since 1945 but Russian since 2004 are determine to prove this is not the way its happened. Im totaly for this but right now, this is not the information the rest of the world are. People are not stupid i did have a smile to when i saw the story line about this poor russian commender who think russian are barbarian. Come on ;-)

It's good old COH boost at maximum. A lot of commander features lots of stuff to do lots of action DLC everything is nice.

Don't miss this game becoz of some peeved poor 15 year olds who can't afford DLC, or pirated the game and therefore miss out on it by default.
I honestly think that's where alot of the gripe is, oh and not being able to learn tactical RTS without rage quit.

It's obvious some mad Russians created fake accounts to skew the user score average with hundreds of fake reviews (and I bought this game mainly to support the truth, not some crazy nationalist Russian's who want to re-write things). It's been well documented in German historical accounts that the Russians used some pretty barbaric tactics to fight the Germans how else could they fight a superior opponent? Germans killed Russians 10-1 and ran out of bullets on a number of occasions.... The Chinese used the same tactic in Korea, too; send people out to their deaths and run the enemy out of bulets!

There's a growing backlash against Russian devs such as Gaijin and Wargaming.net; they skew history to favor Russian planes and tanks and don't take in to account the real-world advantages. You can't rewrite history that's already been written....

However it is a GAME. pretty clearly most of the Russians scoring this 0/10 for insulting their history never played the game, and simply posted their venting reviews. As for the game being too much like Company of Heroes 1, or an inferior game, I disagree. There is definitely an evolution of ideas at play here. And Relic worked hard and long to create a framework for gamers to enjoy a lot here.

The way the game was diced up to be bought as DLC is pretty terrible. Selling vehicle skins for dollars a pop is absurd when we are talking about 50 skins and probably more than $100! Sega are you out of your minds? That is ABSURD! Dudes give us an in-game workshop to make our own color schemes! don't be so greedy!

Despite the over-priced DLC and the anti-Soviet propaganda. There is a good game in here. Definitely wait till it is on sale, and especially the expansion packs which are way-over-priced. Ignore the skins and load up on 'commanders' when they are cheap.

And enjoy a good, high-paced RTS. 8/10 with a couple of points added to address the ridiculous 1.8 user score.

In terms of gameplay this game is a painful exercise in futile micro-management. If anyone out there wants to play a game that is faithful to actual military combat in WWII do not get this game. instead you should hunt out an old combat of Close Combat V invasion Normandy which is the same basic idea as this game but 1000 times better!

The commentary soundtracks are pretty special. All in all, love the game, (the reader, not me, I already do). I don't know how the Germans actually carried out Blitzkrieg, with the armor, the sub-machine guns, and other parameters, when the levels of military technology are compared. The German factions after their units are upgraded, have the advantage. The Panzer Grenadier has the weaker anti-tank rifle, but is armed with the assault rifle by default. But, unusually, the German anti-tank rifle is earlier in make and marque, than the Soviet counterpart relevant gun. The assault rifle can make the guards rifles look like they are getting mowed down, one after the other in number. The star units are the panzer Grenadier, and the Guards Rifles. The upgrades to the Guard Rifle veteran experience seem to be of no consequence, they just keep on shooting the German tanks and vehicles as efficiently as they do without any experience. If you put panzer Grenadier units against Guards, armed with the sub-machine gun upgrades, it could be interesting. The German panzer Grenadiers seem to have camouflage before engagement, and the Soviet Guards the ability to spot the enemy effectively.

I agree with some meanings listed up here that the dlc content is a bit too expansive, but you dont need it the game is balanced very well) Dlc commanders are just a supplement for some strategies(you can win with casual commanders as well)

and when there is a steam sale like in this moment you get 50-75% to dlc content.

I've read a great number of books about WWII, and in particular the Great Patriotic War. ("Barbarossa-The Russian German Conflict, 1941-1945" by Alan Clark being the best one for anyone interested) I would say that they don't arrange specific events in the campaign exactly as they were, but they do give the correct context. For instance, in the newest "Victory at Stalingrad" Patch and DLC they have a Theatre of War operation that shows the taking of the bridge that allowed the Soviets to cut off the beleaguered German 6th army, and annihilate them some short time after the main counter attack and battle, in reality they took this bridge by using stolen German halftracks and gaining the absolute surprise, but in the game it's more like a battle, so not dead on, but it's not like the game makers didn't know what they were doing. I'd say I think this series is the closest to Chess I have ever seen in a video game, and it is being better balanced all the time by he Relic team, but whatever you think of that I do not think it deserves any criticism for how it showcases the war, in that regard I would say it is as accurate as you can be while still letting the player determine how he or she chooses to tackle the task at hand. Of course the storyline sucks. There are many historical mistakes and exaggerations in it. But the game itself is not as bad as you may think while looking at user score. That's why I'd like to redeem myself after being an a***ole and voting 0 many years ago because one commie told me so.
Also, most of the negative scores here are fake and made without even playing the game but after watching Badcomedian's (or some other russian bloggers fond of USSR) videos. May be about 4 thousand (out of 4425 at the moment) or more, idk. But I do know that they can't be trusted.
I ranked COH2 9/10 now because of the huge amount of fake scores to equalize it, but remember about failed storyline. Hope you'll see this someday and thank me for revealing the mystery of low score. Play this game and don't look at Russians whining. Seee ya.

Re-reviewing this now that I tried it again. Setting a 10 because of the Russians that spammed negative reviews because this game handles the uncomfortable truth for them.

It's definitely an enjoyable game, with many mechanics of the old CoH1.

It is rather tactical and you have to know your enemy to be able to win the day. There are a few issues though and they are mostly the following:

    - Some units seem useless, and don't fill any function, or are too expensive to purchase when you can get a similar unit for just a tiny bit more fuel or MP and have a way, way better efficiency.

    - Balance is also an issue naturally, as these games can be hard to balance. Examples are Russian tanks seemingly fires their main gun and can kill up to 4 units with one shell, from any tank. While German tanks cannot. Germans (OKW) have garrisonable AT-rocket launchers and they're insane.

    - RNG will cause madness sometimes.

    - Last and biggest problem. The EXTREMELY expensive commanders that you have to pay for in-game to be able to get. Or you can play hundreds of thousands of games to find some of them. This is the major flaw in CoH2 that relic did. If not for this feature, the game would be so many times more enjoyable. It would be fine if they sold cosmetic things in the store, such as camouflage, victory strikes and all the little things for your player card. As it is now they sell commanders, and yes, those commanders have some of the unique and ICONIC units of the way. Like Sturmtruppen, KV-2, Assault Grenadiers, Partisans, Tiger Ace, Sturmtiger, Jäger Light Infantry Recon, FlammPanzer Hetzer and more. There might even be MORE units not available as I got loads of commanders for free because I was a "veteran". If you purchase the game now, I don't know how many unique units you will miss out on, but possibly very many.

Now this is such a shame because behind all that pay for our chopped up game **** there's a really nice and enjoyable game. It would be a lot better if they had you progress through ranks, unlocking these commanders as you went along and then having the possibility of purchasing them if you really wanted them. Obviously this includes not making it impossible to grind through the level in a rather short time of playing 100 hours or so should be enough in my opinion.

It is a really fun game to play with your friends and I would recommend it DESPITE the **** commanders crap.

However, were it not for the **** commander buying, and the Russians complaining here. My real ratings would be:

    8/10

As it stands now with the commanders being as they are I would rate it:

    5/10

Company Of Heroes 2 is an actually great game, It has it's ups and downs compared to it's procedure, CoH1. The game-play, in my opinion, is smooth and just a big fun adventure. But I think that lots of people are hating because CoH1 was such a great game, everyone compares it to that, so it's unevenly judged. Here is actual fact: Joseph Stalin was a power hungry madman who is responsible for tens of millions of Russian deaths. Where the nazis employed the SS, the Russians deployed the NKVD, who were fanatics who enforced a no retreat mindset and led millions of soldiers to unnecessary deaths by charging German defenses and shooting them if they retreated. Make no mistake, both armies did terrible things, but these Russian dogs on this site are claiming it was only the nazis who raped and pillaged?? LoL what a laugh! Lastly, the Russians encouraged their soldiers to rape as many German women as possible in 1945 as a sort of reparation for the Germans invading their country. In addition, it is one of the few RTS games I've ever had the experience of playing where tactics are more important than elite units or unit spamming. While you still need to work your way towards quality forces during pitched fights, often times the game can hinge on the success you have with your most basic units. Infantry on both sides can drastically change a fight with a smart grenade or molotov thrown. Anti tank weapons can devastate an enemy armored column, or just buy you enough time to redeploy your forces.

The destructible terrain and weather effects round off a pretty amazing RTS. Killer cold becomes a real challenge as the enemy and yourself begin to realize the advantage of blowing up shelter from them. And being able to crack the ice to put a tank under is one of the most satisfying moments Ive had in a long time.

Highly recommend this for any RTS fan who wants a bit more grit and tactics to their fights and a little less unit spamming and super units.

The new game mechanics like the ones above and the fact that noe tanks can be de-crewed and captured by infantry makes this game an extreme pleasure to play for the true strategist in each of us, no longer build tank and send in for the kill! It might come back to bite you!

The sound and the atmosphere make you feel like you are there, seriously it is that incredible. There are a ton of new features like cold tech and true sight which add so much more depth and strategy to the game.

Take for instance true sight where units vision radius is now blocked by objects such as tall wall as and hedges. This now enables players to set up sick ambushes which can decide the fate of the game,

This game does have a few problems with crashing searching for a game and a few balance issues. Furthermore there are some features that are not currently implemented. However all these issues will be resolved with time as with every game on start up has it's issues. You have got to remember that coh2 has had a crazy development cycle having to deal with the demise of THQ and with the limited resources they had. It's unbelievable with what the team at Relic have achieved.

On another note Relic knows how to listen to it's community and treat them well. Many of the new features and balance changes have been the result of Relic discussing with the community. I have had the pleasure of touring the relic studios this past weekend and let me tell you when they say they have "stuff in the pipe line after launch" let me tell you they HAVE FRICKEN AMAZING STUFF. This game has got the potential to rival SC2 if it is given the break that it desperately needs.

Finally I would just like to say that the community behind this game is like no other. Everyone is there for each other (apart from a few trolls) and willing to help you out if your having trouble or if you would like to engage in some serious strategy

After the beta I was really confused, the GUI was strange to say at least, units, effects and overall look was quite bad. BUT after that the game was released and I have witnessed great changes that relic did and most importantly because of players feedback.

The game itself it interesting, units are well balanced, engine looks great (but i think that CoH 1 still looks better in that time), battles are paced and clear. The story has right emotional impact and is really well-narrated and don't mention the end which itself is really good. The "Theater of War" can be challenging, but that's what it is for. In the end the overall atmosphere is really emotive and incredible.
The multiplayer is awesome, it's even better that in the first CoH, mostly because of balanced units (oh and inability to blob rangers or so). I didn't mention True Sight, because in the campaign it hasn't so much importance like in the multiplayer. True Sight is great and innovative (one of the greatest innovations for the last years I would say), furthermore it help to make some tactics useful and functional.

Let me tell you something about that negative reviews of players.
Yes, the game isn't optimized as good as it could be and contains some bugs.
BUT that are minor problems, the bigger problem (in my opinion), is the all "anti-russian propaganda". Now, this may piss off some people. Although sometime it's brought to extreme the point is right, soviet union has great (and I mean really great) losses, they jailed good generals and tacticians and then sent them die in front line, that's just facts (I know that, Russian come to "free" my country again long after war). Problem is that this is topic that's barely pictured. Yes you can love your mother Russia, but don't be blind to what Stalin did. This is controversial topic, but Relic did a great job in telling a believable story, that it's almost unbelievable what they achieved.
So please, they did a great game (probably the best this year) from an Easter front and they did it the right way, do not blind yourselves wit ANY propaganda.

I admit I dislike the RPG elements of levelling up, in most games mainly because I do not the time or patience to grind for suitable unlocks, but I am not willing to purchase these as well, but a lot of people must do it otherwise this companies wouldn't do it.. I think a lot of peoples concerns is the lack of maps and no in-game lobby system, which I can understand but as I don't play much multiplayer it doesn't concern me a great deal..
By giving gamers a Beta version which anyone could play, was a clever idea but for a lot of multiplayer only gamers the full version doesn't offer much difference. as a lot would of already hammered the game..

It must be difficult to get the balance right for both hard core gamers and people who just don't have the time to commit to playing for loads of hours and I think Relic have done a sterling job.

Overall a very interesting tactical RTS game that requires alot of micro managing. The WWII setting is a big plus. No laser robots, monsters or zombies.. You have to be precise and decisive at how to position your troops, how to flank enemies or get in cover etc. Setting up defenses or launching joint assaults with others. It's so fascinating to see actual players working together building lines of defenses or rushing from one end of the map to your rescue. Events that takes place during the battle can be very awe inspiring or... well.. can also be eye-rolling. The banter, the trash talk.... Common in online games.

Another downside is the balancing. You'll be finding the game too easy at one point, then a month later too hard. Then becomes even more easier than before..... And on and on... But it changes the way you play the game to keep things fresh I suppose.

Spent so many hours in this game. Still loving it.

Russia lost about 30 million people in world war 2, half of those were soldiers, also have you people heard about the battles around Stalingrad? the Soviet Union lost 1,129,000 soldiers during that battle, Order No. 277 meant that if you tried to retreat you were shot, no matter the odds that were against you, Order No. 270 meant that even if you were encircled by enemy forces if you tried to surrender you became a traitor and you family was executed. This is how things were so everyone stop complaining about that. Now with the performance issues i am running the game on a gt 630 4gb v-ram, It is running fine at 1680x1050 on higher image quality, highest on everything else but AA, which is on low, so i don't know what is wrong there as i am getting a solid 30fps a second. Also stop with the zeros, a game with a zero is an unplayable mess with no ui, 16 bit graphics, etc, not a decent if not good AAA title. This game is not equal to aliens colonial marines. Overall i believe this is an improvement over the first one, a more streamlined command system and a very well designed true vision system. I can not give this game a 10 as there are still crashing issues and the music plays through cut scenes and other moments which it is clearly not supposed to be there, overall this game is worth the price and is a worthy addition to the series

The game environment is in fact extremely vivid and lifelike: houses, ruins, vehicles and shelters of all kinds will be used (or destroyed) by our armed forces, and the examination of the play (for example, through the use of snipers) will be a fundamental practice. In particular, the glacial environment of Russia opens the way to new strategies and difficulties to be faced: the snow will slow down the soldiers, the storms will kill them for hypothermia while the ice will be destroyed by drowning in the icy waters those who pass through it. Overall I can assure you that the attention that will be given to the battlefield will always be high. Expand

Besides a bit dull campaign, it is still pretty good for a game that doesn't focus much on campaigns.

The multiplayer is amazing when it comes to playing with friends. One may run support while the other goes armor and another with infantry. It makes the game even more strategic. I will admit some downfalls are the powerful flamethrowers and the lethality of mortars but they can easily be countered. The game takes time to adapt from the previous CoH but once you're in the flow of things, it's pretty fun especially with friends. I've been in scenarios where a friend and I are at our main base struggling to survive but when the enemy's failed to push, we built up forces and countered and won the game from what seemed to be a loss for us.

Overall, it's a game worth paying. Unless you are a fan, do not buy it for $60. I only find myself playing 1-2 games at a time before i switch to a different game just because it takes so much out of you.

I completely cannot agree with those saying that the game is historically incorrect. It is meticulously accurate acknowledging the subtleties of the whole eastern front. It does show courageous and brave Russian who died fighting the Nazi regime the worst of all if anybody needs a comparison. The game’s ending clearly shows that good and honest Russian war-hero-soldier-correspondent survives and is able to tell his story it happens in 1952 a year before Stalin’s death. It is the story of many brave people who died not only from the hands of the Nazi Wehrmaht and SS, but also often due to terrible terror sweeping through Stalin controlled Red Army. It does not mean that Russian war effort is underappreciated everybody knows that it was the Red Army who engaged and defeated the major part of Hitler’s army. It was possible because of their ingenuity and devotion to the cause all portrayed in the game. However, it would be an understatement to say that Stalin’s regime was a lot different to Hitler’s. Both regimes were inhumane in the way they treated human life. I especially appreciate the part with Polish Home Army and Ania the part of WW2 history which is rarely heard of. To conclude, I have to say THANK YOU RELIC (and SEGA) for producing COH2 and for the honest way of dealing with the difficult eastern front subject. I hope that such approach to history will be the only way of retelling it in games in the future. I must admit, though, that it would be nice to see some western front stories narrated in a similar way, as many of them are unpleasantly black and white. Expand

I do not rate games based on their launch, the beauty of PC is the healing virtues of time (think Total War). You must compare this game with COH 1 to understand it the best. First, it doesn't matter what people say, the graphics are better, with more dynamic physics, albeit on the more arcade style which looks cooler. The HUD is so much more useful allowing much greater control over units and keeping on top of game events macro is easier.

Thank the Lord there are no more micro exploits that ruined the old game (or just made skill gaps crazy). 7 years of the old game got a lot of these vets use to crap like blocking bridges with tank traps and kt carcasses, so yeah that is definitely better. No more cloaked snipers and vehicles spying on your army from behind hedgerows or sneaking in the middle of your troops. If you love cramped and funneled fighting I am sure there will be maps made to bring back the INfamous Hochwald Gap and the Schledt, two of the most unbalanced maps people are hopelessly addicted two from the old game.

The true sight is brilliant and allows for much more creative defensive styles. Also, weather is a nice twist with a dash of realism to spice the game up over the last one.

I mostly hear about how Germans are OP, but I play as the Russians 90% of the time, and I have won over 80% of my matches, so it goes both ways based in skill and luck.

Let us not forget that the original CoH was just the Americans and Wehrmacht, so I expect to see expansion packs in the future.

This game loses score because they have gone absolutely overboard with skins and commander trees to nickel and dime all their customers. Plus the multiplayer has gone the COD route and levels no longer equal skill. The way the lobby operates, you will never know if you are about to get a beat down from a practiced team of friends with mics or face up against noobs. Plus, there is too much dropping and lag issues right now.

Thus I give this game an 8 out of 10, but in two years I expect to give it a 10 out of 10.

Great game with solid single player campaign and Theatre of War mode. Awesome multiplayer with a great community. Post launch support has been great so far. All that's needed is a competitive ladder and a few balance tweaks but that is to be expected with a game only a month old.

Single player campaign is good, it's not as good as the original game. it's done in the same vein. The multiplayer is where this game really shines - particularly co-op for me personally. With the warspoils updates it's finally got a fair system for getting loot like commanders and skins. Pick this up cheap and get thousands of hours worth of play.

Its a pity that all the crap from the east have defiled this impressive effort. I have done the campaign a few online games i have found it a remarkable game - you can tell a lot of effort t has gone into this. The campaign for CCCp was rich and varied, contained humor and a few challenges, I have played for about 25 years and this was almost on a par with original COH. Company of Heroes 2 is a great follow-up to the original game, the microtransactions and the factions DLC is off-putting, but where this game shines for me the most is the story.

Finally, a game that also showcases the true sickening horrors and crimes against humanity done by the communists.

This game shows that during a war, no side has clean hands, but the Germans and Soviets absolutely had the dirtiest hands in all of human history.
This game doesn't pretend the Soviets were a "noble" force of good, it shows that the sick communists were the "better" evil at the time, and to destroy evil sometimes an unholy alliance is needed.

Great game, gritty truthful story, online play is a bit meh, Steam workshop is a savior.

Will not judge the game for the way that it treats soldiers and especially soviets (which is disgusting indeed). About the balance: well germans had better equipment and more experience at the beginning of the war. As a game it is as good as the first and I enjoyed it more cause I was more interested in the eastern warfare.

Lol at the review bomb saying Soviets didn't do these things to each other. Aged like milk given the whole Ukraine thing XD

This game presents the history of the Soviet Union as it was. The USSR was an occupation and carried out genocide of its own and foreign peoples both before and after the war. In Russia, they do not teach history and rewrite it instead. It's so good that now Ukraine is denazifying Russia. As we can see, in the new war, the tactics of meat assaults have not changed.

If u like RTS genre, It's still the best choice for u!
Perfect gameplay, easy to have control on the battlefield, beautiful fire and explosion animations, cool fog of war system and view distance of units, a huge variety of units to use, a lot of different commanders to play with and...
Just servers are annoying and there are some terrible community map that should get removed by game

Это пример как стада баранов,п одного дебила .Не поигравшей в игру пошли ставить низкие оценки.Видно,что создатели старались и уважаёт наш народ.Есть конечно дурацсккие моменты , ,но мало.

This review is strictly for online multiplayer, which in my opinion is the best way to play rts. When the game was first released in 2013, I didn't like it as much as CoH1. It is more strategic and with reduced population cap, requires you to make a decision on what units you want to make up your army. You can't have everything. This requires you play strategically. Instead of simply overwhelming your opponent when you are ahead. Best RTS of all time even better than the original. After 7 years this game is still getting balance patches and updates to keep it fresh and fun! Ive been playing this game almost everyday for the past 7 years. And 6 years of COH1 before that. Expand

This game changed my view on RTS games forever and its story is not bad as others say. It also has awesome macOS port. Just ignore pro-soviet lynchers in metacritic and enjoy it! This game deserves at least 7 user score.

Company of Heroes 2 is curiously forgettable as single player, even though cliched horrors of war and overdose of fake accents try their best. As a multiplayer it shines, although beginners usually think otherwise. [Aug 2013]

Relic Entertainment cleared the hurdle the original game set as far as I'm concerned. Tweaking, remoulding and teasing out the underlying systems of the original, and then layering things like cold weather, may not set the world on fire like the original Company of Heroes did but it's still a solid strategy game and with the right support and continued release of content I can see it living on for quite some time.

Everything its predecessor was: an intense and enjoyable RTS that gives you the feeling of really being an armchair general. It is just unfortunate that after waiting so long for a sequel, it doesn't offer too much in the way of innovation.
