It had some technical and other issues that held it back from being better. I’ll start by saying that there are some great characters in this and there are plenty of choices to go around to tailor the story to how you want it to go. There is also a decent amount of content for an episode. I will say that the game wasn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be a forgone conclusion that you got excluded from the exchange program and it was going to deal with the year away from your girlfriend you had to navigate but actually it gives you different ways to try to get the scholarship back and deals with the weeks leading up to the program itself. This isn’t a bad thing, I liked where it went with it so I don’t mind that my expectations were different from what I got. The art was decent but I will say that many characters had really weird proportions to me and it was noticeable. Not game breaking by any means but for a lack of a better word many character models didn’t feel “right” or realistic. The animations were decent and allowed you to change the camera position for many scenes. The music was decent when used but the game had large chunks of no audio or sound effects. Also a small nitpick was that this “university” has a principal which I have never seen in my life. High schools have principals, universities have a dean.

I played College Bound: Episode 1 on Linux. It never crashed on me. I did notice several spelling errors though. Things like “throught” should have been “thought”; “an university professor” should have been “a university professor”; and neiter” should have been “neither”. The game allows you to manually save whenever you want and has 54 save slots. Alt-Tab doesn’t work.

    Game Engine: Ren’Py
    Save System: Manual (any time)
    Disk Space Used: 1.6 GB

    GPU Usage: 0-86 %
    VRAM Usage: 718-1023 MB
    CPU Usage: 2-13 %
    RAM Usage: 2.4-4.8 GB

Issues aside I enjoyed the first episode of College Bound and hopefully future episodes build on this and improve. Stuff like the spelling and silence should be easy enough to fix for instance. I finished the episode in 3 hours.

    My Score: 7.5/10
