The game is obviously still a work in progress but that did not diminish my enthusiasm for both dynamic campaigns. [10/2017, p.77]

Overall the gameplay is tense and can be paced to your own tastes through the use of time compression. The tutorials are perhaps not as thorough as one might hope, and there are a few critical functions which are bafflingly only attached to shift+a key bindings which should definitely be given buttons on screen, but other than that the user interface is good and provides critical information well. Also of note is the fact that the game does allow for UI rescaling so this game is suitable for use with UHD 4k screens, and looks fantastic on them.

If you're at all interested in the setting and enjoy games with deliberate, thoughtful gameplay then this title is certainly worth looking at.

Even if not a sim in the most hardcore sense, it still has a pretty steep leaning curve regarding strategy and tactics. The replayablility is great, but the game would be even better with some additionnal features and a bit more of system management. The sound track is great, and the AI is ruthless when playing in the higest difficulty settings. A must have. Full Review »

With that said, it's 3am and I've been trying to exit the conn for 3 hours. Killerfish did a great job of tailoring this as something in between a study sim and a casual game. You can dive deeper (pun) into it if you want and become more effective, or you can wing it and still have fun. I took a few points off the score because it lacks granular keyboard controls. I hooked up DWVAC voice controls to the control schema that's available, but I still have to use the keyboard often. For instance, if you want to order the dive officer to take you to a specific depth, you have to click arrows (no numeric entry or even shortcuts for the arrows). However, if you want to micromanage your dive officer, you can use DWVAC to say "Bow planes 10 degrees down" and watch your depth closely, then say "level the bow planes". I'd prefer to give orders and let them carry those orders out since you play the part of the captain and should have situational awareness of many more pressing matters. I do like the fact that you don't have to learn target motion analysis to use the sonar, but it's still usable in that you can manually match the signature to get a faster contact validation. This means you don't have to study for six months to understand it, but you still get to take part in the interesting aspects. Well done! If you want to learn something about submarine warfare, I highly recommend this game. If you are looking for a study sim, I still recommend it and believe it's worth the money.. it's not so simple that it will insult your intelligence. Full Review »
