CloverPit is very much a “What you see is what you get” situation. If you just like seeing numbers go up, its gameplay is more than simple enough to facilitate that with a high degree of variability and kit potential, though there’s also plenty of room to experiment with builds and perk loadouts, moreso as you play the game and unlock more of its large charm catalog. There’s a goal to reach if you’re so inclined, but it’s also just a great game to turn your brain off and enjoy while watching a YouTube video. The only real nitpick I could offer is that the descriptions of some of the charms are a little dense and percentage-heavy, but that becomes progressively less of a problem as you play the game and pick up more of what it’s putting down. Frankly, it’s a wonder I was even able to put it down long enough to write this, and I’m gonna go start another run as soon as I’m done. The first step is admitting you have a problem, and the second step is pulling the dang lever again.

CloverPit is a highly successful experiment that elevates the tension of gambling to a form of psychological horror based on risk management. The Panik Arcade team has successfully taken a mechanic founded on RNG and injected it with strategic depth reminiscent of the best deckbuilders available.

CloverPit is a dark blend of slot machine and roguelike that starts simple but unfolds into surprising depth. It lacks the variety and accessibility of a game like Balatro, yet keeps you hooked with tension, unlocks, and the constant gamble.

CloverPit does what it does well. It’s very clear how much inspiration Panik Arcade has taken from Balatro and Buckshot Roulette, but it’s taken bits and pieces and created its own unique identity. The low-poly art style lends itself very well to creating an eerie atmosphere, and taking the time to put together charm combinations is fun and incredibly satisfying when it pays off. Though the rougelike element and pure RNG might be frustrating at times, and the simple gameplay loop can feel repetitive, taking what you’ve learned from a previous run and seeing it pay off in another feels very rewarding.

Like any good slot machine, this game’s a gamble—fun if you’re here for quick spins and rogue-lite flair, but don’t expect to hit the jackpot if you’re chasing a story, because while there is one, you're better off just staying at the slots and making that number go up.
