    This port does not do justice to the tremendous masterpiece's renown, bad textures, filtering and audio. Made with laziness and mismanagement. It is much better to play the “SNES” or Mobile version.

    I got this game on Steam.

    This game should be a 10. I generally don't connect with JRPGs that are this old without a nostalgic connection, but I did not have that issue here. I loved the story and the gameplay was interesting in ways that I didn't expect. I also love the art by Akira Toriyama. All that said, I need to knock it down a few points for instability. I had to work    I got this game on Steam.

    This game should be a 10. I generally don't connect with JRPGs that are this old without a nostalgic connection, but I did not have that issue here. I loved the story and the gameplay was interesting in ways that I didn't expect. I also love the art by Akira Toriyama.

    All that said, I need to knock it down a few points for instability. I had to work through some crashes and visual bugs. I have seen other SNES games that had much better ports.    … Expand

    Recommended? Why, it's only one of the best games of all times, has been since 1995.
    It's certainly on the top of my JRPG list, up there with Final Fantasy VI.
    Chrono Trigger, for the two at the back of the class, is an epic quest trough time with a world to explore and, obviously, save. The characters are interesting and likable and their 16-bits beautiful design from Akira Toriyama    Recommended? Why, it's only one of the best games of all times, has been since 1995.
    It's certainly on the top of my JRPG list, up there with Final Fantasy VI.

    The characters are interesting and likable and their 16-bits beautiful design from Akira Toriyama only adds to their charm.
    The musics are very good too.
    There are many choices to make, many secrets to find and they all have consequences. Some are minor but some are pretty major too.

    There is also a new game plus opening some opportunities.

    I've played the game several times on many systems and my favorite version of the game is still the SNES one but this one (Steam) is good too (although I'm not a fan of the added videos).

    This is definitively a must-have for anybody liking the JRPG genre.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story begins very well, with a kind of very light prologue that serves for you to sympathize a little with the characters, to receive a light lore of the world and. But quickly a twist occurs that forces you to take action. Then there is the first arc in history, which is very simple but very functional and which in the first Boss already has a slight interesting level. But it is in the second arc that you understand what the story will be about and the 'villain' is introduced, Lavos. Also in this arc there is a presentation and even a certain development of the character Robo. The third arc is much more grand and well written than its predecessors (and is a 'second chapter' of the first). It has a lot of lore, the rest of the map of the second arc has 'increased' and it is full of life and ready to be explored. It is the great story of Frog / Gleen, the hero. They took some classic fantasy elements and made a really cool unique story here. However, Glenn's story is slightly 'interrupted', as a party needs to fix Masamune and for that it returns to the Prehistoric era, where a future fixed character from the party is presented to us, Ayla. They needed to fit this timeline in some way as soon as possible (to introduce Ayla), but a new sub-arc if started already existing, very interesting and unique but not so functional (note: it is a short arc). It is possible to argue that this is a Chrono Trigger spell and against that there is no argument. It was a certain breach of expectation but anyway, after that we see Frog's past and finally he reaches the climax of the arc, which is very good. When you defeat the Magus, it seems until the end of the game, and you have no idea how the story will go. Then there is a sequence to the sub-arch of Ayla in something bigger, even interesting. And here comes the next big arc and the story takes a very unexpected turn. When you arrive in Zeil, the game throws a load of lore over that kingdom and its 3 gurus, it's kind of tiring, but it's an interesting and very original lore. And it is in this arch that you discover your ship at a time, which is necessary for the party to return to 12,000 BC Here comes one of the highlights of the story, the twist of the Magus and the death of Crono, which was already good, was too much with that one cutscene. They were very smart, combining 3 remarkable events in one. After you see how Lavos' consequences in the world come another prison (incredibly even more interesting than the last one). And here comes another peak, the Crono sub-arc, in which you use the Chrono Trigger (family name?) To 'resurrect it'. And when you do it if you have a Marle party, one of the best scenes in the game takes place. After that you can reset the game, but you shouldn't because the phenomenal sidequests waiting for you spread over the different eras, they develop characters, add lore to the world, solve political problems, problems of the world in general and unfinished business. It has some of the most emotional moments of the game in them. After them comes the climax of the game, Black Omen (which is kind of a sidequest, but is necessary for the 'real ending'). The climax is fine. The end of the game that I took and is probably considered the true end (the one that the cat enters the machine and their adventures continue), it is good enough but I found it a little too happy. And the cutscene of the epilogue I thought was great as a closure.
    I believe that the story should have been more linear in the beginning, only after you beat the Magus should you be able to go to other timelines to occur. Another thing that hindered the story was that you have the freedom to choose the characters for your party, obviously this affects the story a little. And not having the 'right' character can cause some scenes to lose much of their weight (such as when you 'rescue' Crono with Marle). If it was a very important scene, they should have forced the character to be at the party (as was done at times). It is worth noting that the pace of the story is very good, being just 'broken' with more history. Some arcs of the story had involvement of each character, involving their presentation, development and etc., but Lucca did not have one of her, which was a ball out (she has the sidequest like everyone else). The sub-plot of very decent romance, even cliché (hero and princess) did a good job. He added the story, leaving some more impactful moments and creating others. Sidequests are MANDATORY ... obviously not, but I highly recommend doing them.

    One of the most impressive aspects in my view was that, for a JRPG, the game is short, but very rich in content and history and very dense.    … Expand

    The first part of this game seems amazing, like a 10/10, one of the best games you've ever played. It then becomes and abrasive boring slow slog with cheap tactics. Oh wow, every enemy automatically takes half my health. Oh this enemy can kill me in two hits. Oh I used the wrong spell I guess cause I just healed it, now my entire party is dead and I have to redo those 5 forced battlesThe first part of this game seems amazing, like a 10/10, one of the best games you've ever played. Oh look I finally made it to the boss this will be exciting, .......oh wow they are literally reusing the same boss I just faced 15 minutes ago. God this is so lazily made. It isn't one of the best games of all time, or rpgs, or jrpgs, it isn't the best of anything.

    I love the characters and the charm it shows at first, and that makes it all the worse that this game falls off such an incredibly steep cliff that you never saw coming.    … Expand

    Game is great especially if you played many times before and love how it was the first game ever to implement and properly do the New Game Plus feature. It’s launch on PC was terrible but I have played in PC and it’s just as fun as it is on iOS and SNES. One of the best RPG’s out there for the gameplay and what your able to do. I definitely recommend this!

    My only experience with this game is the pc port, so I don't know exactly why people say the port is bad. I had issues a couple times which was annoying but nothing crazy. overall I enjoyed the game, it had some great moments. Towards the ends it dragged on a lot.

    I typically will try to be fair to a game who tried something new but failed, I tend to be harsh on a game that tries nothing to improve, and I am definitely merciless on games that do nothing new and do nothing but mess up the old.     The steam version of Chrono Trigger is a hot mess of problems all over the place. From graphical glitches to soft locks and sound errors, you get to sample the full buffet here. Its honestly hard to believe this went through several fix patches and if it did, good god what was the release version like?

    Buggy

    I was met with graphical glitches that I had to install a snes restoration mod to get rid of quite often, and even then got to meet some graphical problems I could not remove and honestly dunno how this passed QA. You actually get to see the wizard behind the curtain in several maps, the debug panels (commonly tiles that simulate movement on maps by quickly swapping one set of sprites in this panel for another) are in full view on many maps. The first time I ran into this was the trial and escaping from prison where I could see the debug panel that spoofed the gates moving.

    Now I let this one go since I had to hug the wall to see it and if it had been a one off like this I'd have let it go, but it happened in several maps till crescendoing at the Ocean Palance during a major storyline cutscene. I also noted during the final boss couple this with alot of sounds not being correct or sounds/music stopping in places it didn't originally and its just a mess that makes me wonder how it got messed up this badly. All they had to do was port the DS game, you'd not think this would be hard.

    DS Content

    Speaking of the ds game and its exclusive content, its all here with the exception of the arena of time which you're not missing much if anything at all there. I've said this before about the DS content but I may as well get it out here as well. You can fully feel it was written in a whole different era cause of how it has many modern trappings to game content. Both the Lost Sanctum and Dimensional Vortexes feel the need to waste your time as much as possible.

    Let me break it down to what I mean. The vanilla games' content tried to tell a story with some fun gameplay, you can go through most of the game taking battles simply as they come and even by the end sneaking around some of them and skipping them and you'll be totally fine level wise, "grinding" is not really a thing in Chrono Trigger unless you want it to be. Lost Sanctum with as few spoilers as I can do breaks down to jumping between the same location in two time periods constantly to solve a problem between them.

    Every step of the questline has a problem in Time Period A that the solution most assuredly is in Time Period B, on the way through this constant running back in forth they have unavoidable encounters, at least one per map screen often more, that you are forced into. These encounters don't even have some of the clever bits the main game had, for example one encounter has a rat running laps around a bush, if this was the main game you could have snuck around the rat when he has his back to you, avoiding the encounter. Not here, you get with in the approx distance you're forced into a fight.

    This really felt like a way to drag the content out which just ends up bringing it down. Because honestly, the story to Lost Sanctum is cute and fun and I think it would have been a nice addition to the game had it not been for these modern influences. Dimensional Vortex suffers more or less the same issues, but more in the forced fighting of pretty much everything in the static parts of the level, it doesn't do alot of back and forth.

    Why Does this exist?

    Honestly with the DS version having this content and being worlds less buggy, I cannot justify the existance of the Steam version. Really what bugs me the most is how lazy this is. I know people like to rag on the Secret of Mana Remake and how it **** things up and is buggy as well. However at least it attempted to remake the game and give us something new. This is essentually a buggy port of a snes rom of a nearly 25 year old game. They want $15 for something that should have been an extra inside a proper remake of the game. If this was not gifted to me I can safely say I'd never have bought it/refunded quite quickly.    … Expand

    Another bad port. Texture smearing, bad filtering. A very ugly thing to look at. You can play with the mods, especially reshade CRT. The rest seems to respect the original game. Controls are not perfect but the sounds is very good. The truth is that it still plays better on an emulator. I give it a 4, because it's playable but you will get bored very fast just looking at it.
