This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. That special time of the year is fast approaching. Mike and Emma are getting ready for Christmas but things are about to get really exciting when they read an advertisement which says that if they can find six Golden Keys located around their shopping mall they’ll win tickets to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus. Help Mike and Emma win this competition so they can have the best Christmas any kid could want!

Having been successful with the first two games in the series Virtual Playground are back with Christmas Wonderland 3 (2012). Like their Halloween Trick or Treat series we follow Mike and Emma, Mike or Sally, Dan or Sally or whatever combination it is this time around. The setup is very Willy Wonka with the two siblings having to find five golden keys to win a completion to meet Santa Claus. Hidden object finding doesn’t get much more mundane than this but when you do get all the keys found a tour of the North Pole (as well as Santa’s workshop) is possible. You get to see elves making toys, a ski lift as well as other places like an Ice Palace although why you need a ticket to enter the Palace is anybody’s guess. The developers also use the same gameplay ideas as their Halloween Trick or Treat series with Christmas themed flippers giving you either a present or a...Santa? Wouldn’t getting a Santa be a good thing? Instead of vampire bonuses there’s snowman bonuses and the usual puzzle types are there. The hidden object finding is still frustrating as in previous games with dodgy click detection and incredibly difficult to find items your hint system is only too happy to show you up with. The game doesn’t provide any more longevity than the first sequel; you’ll still breeze through it in a couple of playthroughs although the game is still slightly longer than the original Christmas Wonderland (2011).It’s the same problems with a badly structured, threadbare story that goes nowhere and two lead characters that are drawn like creepy dolls, especially Mike. Where this third game succeeds it must be noted is in atmosphere but it’s not enough to fill the void of mediocrity left by the gameplay.

Christmas Wonderland 3 (2012) captures the joys of Christmas well but it’s not an improvement over the previous games with the same old issues such as bad click detection and mediocre gameplay. What stops it getting a worse score than the previous game is that it captures the spirit of the year slightly better where the second game felt like a chore. Virtual Playground is good at capturing the atmosphere of this holiday but not making it fun to interact with. Less games and more thought needs to be put into this series for it to be worth recommending. Even Santa Claus understands quality over quantity.
