Jun 18, 2026Combat is fun enough, but rather basic. The story isn’t anything to write home about. Then the final stretch of the game is marred by underdeveloped final areas and mandatory side-quests with poorly communicated updates. At the very least it should still leave an impact with its concept, and that’s a good thing. After all, if a game is forgotten, does it cease to exist?

Jan 28, 2026There are flashes of brilliance in Cassette Boy; the perspective gimmick applied to a top-down Zelda framework is delightfully novel. The game has a cozy retro aesthetic and a breezy, lo-fi soundtrack. If only the game had not been so slavish to its inspirations, ditched the lackluster combat & levelling system, and leaned into the complexity the shrine puzzles hint at underneath the surface. Instead, I’m left with a game brimming with promise that goes frustratingly unrealized.

Jan 22, 2026Cassette Boy has an engrossing core mechanic and a great retro look and feel. Puzzles are interesting, if not convoluted at times, and the world includes lots of nooks and crannies worth exploring.
