I can only recommend this experiment to people who enjoy combing through logs and reading between the lines in search of some deeper meaning or interesting storytelling tricks. I don’t. [09/2016, p.51]

Breached feels like a demo version rather than a full-fledged game.

The controls are really slick, with the feeling of isolation very much apparent. But, the pace of the game accompanied with its limitations do weigh heavy on Breached.

Breached is good and pretty. There's just simply not much of it, and it never convinced me it was worth the grind to unlock all of its secrets.

For its price tag we’d recommend you to better choose a movie ticket for a good (or even a mediocre) sci-fi movie. It’s not a good sign when you feel the repetition of levels in the first playthrough of a game that lasts one hour at most.

Breached has a spark, but it ultimately fades before catching fire.

Breached is a game that tries to make its story cryptic enough to keep the player interested in replaying it, but its gameplay is too shallow and dull to make replaying seem worthwhile.

Breached is a difficult game to classify. It would be easy to peg it as a “survival game”, but the atmosphere and mechanical simplicity disqualify that somewhat. At the same time, it isn’t just an atmosphere/walking simulator, because of the urgency the mechanics have. What it does offer, however, is impressive visuals, a brooding tone, and some good writing. For 7 US$, that might be enough.

Breached is a fun little game that derives a good portion of its charm from its minimalist and mysterious story.

There are some good elements in the game, as always, but they’re bogged down by uninspiring gameplay.

The story is well-written and the exploration sequences compelling, but Breached is too short for either to get the development and depth that they deserve.

Breached is strong in how it uses the first-person perspective for storytelling, how it builds identification between player and protagonist by blurring the lines between them in a minimalist way. But the actual game systems struggle to keep up with the atmosphere and presentation. The weakness of its mechanical systems and the simplicity of its scavenger hunt undercut the experience a lot, especially on multiple playthroughs — even though multiple playthroughs is an intended feature of the game.

An interesting adventure and gameplay, an experience targeted for a very specific kind of user.

Breached is ultimately a very short experience, and we expect most gamers will be able to complete it in under 2 hours. In this short window, gamers will have seen and done most of what the game has to offer, with the only replay value coming through hidden journal entries.

Breached melds together a plethora of mechanics and systems to build a unique experience. The more I played it, that impressive effect was not as astounding as was first introduced but it’s still there.

Breached is a game that wants you to play it again and again, but doesn’t provide enough reason to do so.

  1. Breached is just too small in every aspect to feel satisfying. I’d love to see this fleshed out into something with more ambition and more purpose.

The gameplay basically boils down to running around huge levels, avoiding glowing magnetic spheres (which are mostly static) with the goal to collect 3 objects and return to extraction point. Some of the objects are pretty hard to find, and you may spend a lot of time looking for them. If you collide with a magnetic sphere, you lose that mission, you can't reload, and if you fail a few such missions and ultimately don't collect enough stuff by in-game day 10 (after about 10-15 missions) you lose the game and will have to start over from day one. The whole thing is glued together by some pretty atmospheric narrative which I didn't understand but got sort of a "feeling" for.

    Good:
    - nice music
    - nice art, also there are some interesting blurring effects when you turn while moving fast or when you are near a magnetic sphere

    So-So:
    - the story is immersive but somewhat lacks explanations which may be good or bad depending on how you like to play. I only kind of understood what needs to be done in the game at in-game day 3 or so

    Bad:
    - it takes too much time to move around, and the camera (the point of view) is so close to the ground that you ultimately feel like an ant climbing mountains. With such poor overview of the level, finding anything becomes unnecessary difficult. I found myself sometimes rotating the mouse wheel to zoom out like one would do in World of Warcraft, to get a better view of the surroundings. A control system like in WoW would work much better here, e.g. right-mouse to rotate, left mouse to rotate camera around the running character, and WASD to move/strafe with possibly also QE to rotate.
    - no strafe! And it's also not possible to just look around. Instead you will turn and start moving in that directing due to intertia - that's pretty annoying.
    - the game overall is pretty shallow. Both the missions and the primitive mechanics in the lab which connect them. So, after I lost my first playthrough with 100% fuel and 70% repairs I felt no desire to retry.

Conclusion: it's good for a few bucks if you are into artistic experiences or enjoy solving mazes (and I mean simply mazes, not mazes with shooting, stealth, puzzles etc.).
