Like Octopath before it, a wonderful JRPG from Square who knows the genre almost too well.

Definitely looking forward to further from this series.

Horribly boring story, gives you zero motivation to care about anything that's going on. Overall bad character design and voice acting. The FFV-esque Job system is absolutely not enough to save this game. I wish I could get a refund.

Very little has been changed in the sequences and systems, so the symbiosis of random battles and free game customization works flawlessly. The turn-based battles also run smoothly and the difficulty level is also playable. Here you can always change or even increase it according to your own performance. If you want to experience a great role-playing game, you should take a look at the PC version of Bravely Default 2.

Bad script, bad writing, completely uninteresting characters from start to finish. Lore has no substance. The game is a game-design failure.

When this series 1st came out, it was innovative. Now they have stopped innovating, and decided to be just another JRPG. What happened to the ability to turn off random encounters or crank it up?

As I’ve gotten older my love for turn based RPGs has slowly diminished in favor of action RPGs, while Bravely Default II didn’t do much new to drive the needle back in favor of turn based RPGs, it was a welcome reminder of why I used to love them so much.

I truly enjoyed the story of this game, even if parts of it were definitely uneven (in my opinion the first chapters were the strongest and got weaker basically until the ending), but I LOVE a cycle of destruction based storyline, thanks Mass Effect! On PC this game looks gorgeous too, the character models not so much but it never truly got in the way of all the environmental eye candy. It runs silky smooth too, I’m very happy that I didn’t play this on Switch lol. The best part of this game is easily the soundtrack, DEAR NEPTUNE this is one of the best OSTs in recent memory. Revo is a musical genius & deserves all of the awards, almost all of the tracks tie together in a blissful way.
However there is a fair bit about the game that I didn’t like much. Having to do random side quests in order to see the real ending of the game always rubbed me the wrong way, even if it’s only 2 quests. One of them is without a doubt the most excruciating part of any game I’ve played in the last few years, a stupid card game in order to get an Asterisk (an item you NEED to see the real ending) but it’s completely up to RNG if you can beat the person for the chance to battle them so you can actually get the item, oh & if you lose the card game then you get a GAME OVER & have to reload from the title screen. INFURIATING didn’t even begin to describe that experience. All of that to get the “REAL” nothing burger of an ending too! Ugh. I also tend to dislike equipment systems in any type of game, I seriously hate how common it’s become outside of traditional RPGs like this one, but I actually didn’t mind it too much in BDII! It was scratching a certain itch in my lizard brain of getting to a new town & decking out the party with the next level of strong weapons. Like most RPGs, BDII does have a pretty snail paced start, the story did a lot of heavy lifting so I could stay engaged. I wasn’t huge on the turn based combat though, it is a lot to keep track of & can be downright brutal at times even on the easy settings. It’s unfortunately also a very grindy game. Without the exploits I discovered, there’s no way I would’ve kept my sanity long enough to finish this adventure, even if I was very invested in the plot.
But overall I came away from Bravely Default II with a positive experience, I really would like to go back to play the first games on 3DS sometime soon. Their soundtracks alone convinced me already!

The game starts realy good, but it keeps getting boring the more you play. The enemies in the dungeons are so fast that its basicly a random battle every time you give ten steps. The bosses sometimes are very strong against your class, that you have to grind another class to beat them.

Bravely Default 2 was a good but safe JRPG on Nintendo Switch when it launched earlier this year. On PC, despite being a bare-bones port, most of the technical issues that plagued the Nintendo Switch version are resolved with it looking and running massively better. This is the best way to play Bravely Default 2, but it should’ve been a more fully-featured port.

While the combat system of the Bravely Default 2 is unique and offers a high risk, high reward style of gameplay not seen elsewhere, the overall experience plays out in classic JRPG fashion. I had fun grinding out XP for the jobs I wanted, with it never feeling like a chore, the true sign of a well made JRPG. The lack of mouse support for the PC version though is next to unacceptable with all the menus you work in. Classic JRPG style, not necessarily a modern day classic. The lack of true innovations keep it from perfection.

We don’t get JRPGs of this caliber every day. With a turn-based battle system that not only facilitates experimentation and customizability but also serves up a real challenge, Bravely Default II is a game that knows how to engage its players. Its narrative doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but there’s tangible effort put into these characters and plenty of surprises to be found along the way. The addictive moment-to-moment gameplay and the amount of content on offer is well worth the price of admission on either Switch or PC, but it’s hard not to prefer the latter for its higher resolution and smoother framerate. It really gives the game’s beautiful artwork the treatment it deserves.
