I'm suprised the game got so many good reviews from websites. I played Borderlands 1 for over 50 hours, and compared to Borderlands 2 in which i spent probably 20-30 hours already, it's exactly the same game with some improvements. Yes it is better than the first one but if you played the first one you're gonna get bored quickly, it really feels like gearing and leveling up all over again with nothing new to expect. You're gonna face the same enemies over and over again, along with a story you're already gonna know what's going to happen before finishing it. The characters have some personality but most of them are annoying because they're trying too hard to be funny, like the little girl acting all ghetto, claptrap is probably the only good one. I expected a lot more from this game but it didn't live up to the hype it got. If there's gonna be a third part they sure need to come up with new stuff. I would rather have more challenging enemies than a horde of idiots you're gonna kill anyway, the enemies sure get annoying, the robots are probably the worst. I'll give it a 6, after all it's still a solid game and improvement from the first Borderlands, but it's nothing new. Expand

I was never a fan of Borderlands, but then a week ago, a friend gave me a Steam key for BL2 and I played the game, enjoyed the freaking hell out of the game, became a fan and have been addicted to this game for the past week. Borderlands 2 is the one and ONLY game released in 2012 that actually pleased me enough to play it a 2nd time. Borderlands 2 is my Number 1 game of 2012.

Extremely repetitive game. If you have played one quest in this game you have played them all. Go to x get b kill everything. YOu kill the same enemy types the entire game over and over.

I was enormously pleased to see that the game surpassed any and all expectations that i had come to nurse so tenderly during the pre-release period. The UI wasn't a huge improvement over the original game but everything else was a vast improvement. The game play maintained its fast paced, over the top FPS action and the controls felt nothing short of perfect. The character classes were varied and skill trees even more so. The plot was enjoyable, funny and filled with plenty of twists and events that made me quite literally exclaim my disbelief. Claptrap is now absolutely hilarious instead of infuriating and irritating. The enemies are varied and requires varied strategies to take them down. A lot of effort was put into making the game a lasting success such as changing the enemy models for your second play through. It really makes you feel like you're continuing on instead of just starting over again as so many games make you feel. Oh and how could i forget the guns. So so many guns. Borderlands advertised millions of gun combinations but it doesn't stand remotely close to the guns in the sequel. The look of awe on my friends faces as I whip out an automatic laser sniper rifle with reflective silver plating was priceless. Speaking of friends, i'd recommend playing with them. Although the game is fun on your own, you don't get nearly the same experience as you do if you play with others. Overall, if you're looking for a fun game for you and a friend, pick this up. I'm serious. You're in for hours of laughter, high paced shooty action and gawking over the sheen and polish that the developers put into this wonderful game. Expand

Bad - Lots of texture and physics problems. Within the first two hours I had to quit to the menu due to getting stuck in a wall. Can see/shoot enemies through walls - and they can sometimes do the same to you. Some aspects might make sense on a console, but are cumbersome on a PC. For example the in-game menu system (skill points, inventory) is still clunky with a mouse. Best to just use arrow keys and Enter/Esc. You can tell the game was designed to be played on a 50" screen, and they just shrunk everything down when viewed on a 22" screen. Item tool tips are needlessly large and take up too much screen real estate.

Back to the good - weapon customization is better this time around. Real difference between weapon manufactures. Shields and class mods can have negative attributes, which is interesting. Completing achievements gives you "bad ass ranking" which can be used to give single digit percentage gains to various things like weapon damage, reload speed, grenade dmg, etc - that apply to all characters. Bought this on a Steam sale for like $22. Glad I didn't pay more than that. Debating buying any of the DLCs due to texture/physics issues above.

Too much "go here, do that, come back, do this" Multiplayer is where the fun is at, but the game does little to reinforce the importance of teamplay. Selfish players go on their own with no consequence. The game does little to nothing in awarding team oriented actions, and punish the lone rangers (monster spawns for lagging players would be very effective). The guns and the AI personalities are the most interesting points of the game. Network connections are buggy, and host based. If the host bails from a story/mission, the game ends. And finally, the graphics. Borderlands2 could have done a much better job at graphics, but they took the easy way out. The cartoon/art graphics is unique, but woefully inadequate in comparison to today's video capabilities that developers can exploit.

Shooting monsters is the fun part, when you can actually get to them. Outside of that, mass boredom.

I will say though, the gameplay really didn't take off until the second playthrough. Playing 2 playthroughs back to back did make me feel impatient at times to rush through the story so I could level up and enjoy the unfolding abilities. some of the levels were extremely FUN- the arena areas come fore-most to my mind in this regard. Multiplayer is very rewarding, as each classes' special abilities can create combos that have devastating results. My biggest gripes comes from the gearbox keys and end-game "content" the keys are so hard to come-by (and you only acquire them at a rate of 1 per account), that you feel like you're forced to wait until level 50 to use them, and when you do, the random loot system seems to give you crap, such as grenade mods, or class mods for a class you don't play. the DLC is fun, but the cost per expansion makes the dollar value only worth it if you bought that season pass special. The game does nothing new either, however, the first game brought with it a working formula, so it makes sense that it hasn't changed - but you do find yourself wishing that it had changed, adding a layer of depth beyond fetch quests and collecting loot. Having said that, the concept is still as enjoyable now as in the first game and I've had a blast playing through it in co-op (and now replaying it with a different class build at the higher level difficulty). So far I am totally impressed. I plan to add more to my review later and possibly adjust the score. As of now, the things that stick out in this game are...

    1. Better visuals than the first game, albeit slightly. With details cranked to maximum Borderlands 2 (a DX9 game) is surprisingly one of the prettiest on the market, thanks in large part to an impressive art-style.

    2. Story. Unlike in the first game, players have a very real objective and a very real enemy from the moment the game starts. This is an improvement over the first game, as it's always important to get the player involved early in the story.

    3. Gunplay is extremely satisfying. Aiming down the sights, shooting from the hip - however you go about it, the gameplay in Borderlands 2 is very intense and very satisfying. The enemies are tenacious, and are intelligent enough to dodge gunfire and predict your movements.

    4. Rewarding. The game rewards the players with a non-stop barrage of usable weapons and loot. This is a refreshing change of pace for someone coming over from Diablo 3.

    5. Well optimized. This game is not very demanding and can be played on max settings without being too greedy with system resources. Just about any mid-range machine can play this game to it's fullest potential, and it runs like a dream.

As I said before, I will add more as I play more. But I can already tell that Borderlands 2 is something very special.

A great game that 100% embraces what it is and does not try to be anything else. It is not a massive upgrade over the first game but more what Borderlands should have been. Had the original come out only last year there may not be enough innovation here to justify the sequel but I feel it has been long enough that I am ready for another romp around Pandora.

The game is big, if you do the majority of the side quests you are looking at roughly 55 hours to make it through the story and you will be roughly level 35 (level cap is 50). The environments are not as varied as they could be but there are far more of them then where in the first game, yet they all fell like part of Pandora. There seems to be roughly double the number of enemy types and the game does a good job at changing things up. Just when i am getting tired of a certain enemy I end up going up against something different. The weapons are still mostly randomly generated, there does seem to be a greater variety, it could be better but there is almost always something new to try.
    .
Where the game vastly improved was the story. They did a great job with Handsome Jack and setting him up as the primary protagonist. Along the way you will meet and kill many other eccentric characters but the entire game you are moving towards the final confrontation with Jack. I found the writing for the most part to be very witty, a few childish jokes but for the most part double entendras that gave me a chuckle if not laugh out loud. The classes are a bit more varied then they were in the first game, it also feels more like you are picking a character instead of a class. Each character has a back story that gets somewhat explored during the game, they also each have their own personality and a unique play mechanic.
    .
All in all a great game with lots of gameplay, a quality story, lots of fun guns, a passable leveling system. It looks good, runs smoothly, excellent voice work and a unique art style. We dont need a sequel next year but by 2014 maybe 2015 I will be ready for a another sequel.

If you're looking for something with a ponderous story full of morality and contemplation – one best savored alone – then you'll need to look elsewhere. Borderlands 2 delivers tons of lighthearted, occasionally juvenile fun with immense replayability, and is best approached with a few buddies in tow. It doesn't revolutionize the concept pioneered by its forebear, but it refines it to a razor-sharp edge and offers some of the most fun you can have in a cooperative action RPG this side of Diablo II. And if nothing else, it's got lots of Claptrap.
