Ori Mees did a superb job with Blake: The Visual Novel. The story is compelling, the choices feel real, and the consequences will have you trying the game again once it’s done.

A compelling tale about a psychological breakdown and loss brought to life with a vibrant comic book art style, there’s a lot to like about this debut. For a first release, it’s a pretty fantastic job, despite a few minor hiccups.

Blake: The Visual Novel can be funny and captivating, but it’s also sad and melancholic. Besides the few nitpicks that I’ve already mentioned, I think the game has something for everyone. Whether you’ll see the game’s twists coming your way or not, that’s only something you can answer yourself. My only warning is to not be discouraged by the game’s slow start, as the plot really picks up the pace the further you’re into the game. Whether you’re a huge fan of visual novels or not, I’d really recommend you give this one a shot.

Blake: The Visual Novel was a promising debut from Ori Mees; Blake made me laugh a few times, and stressed me out over making the right decisions at other points. I felt compelled to read it through to the end, which is more than I can say for other visual novels I’ve muddled through recently. Even though Blake definitely displays the tell-tale, first-project symptom of doing too much in too little time, it has definitely convinced me to keep an eye on the developer’s future projects.
