A game with a wonderful world, the story of which, in my opinion, is masterfully entered into the narrative and is presented during the gameplay. But the shooting system is a bit weak.

    FEELING STRZELANIA

Not perfect, but it comes so close to it that it´s both incledible and kind of infuriating. It´s an unforgettable experience, bold in a way that most games, couldn´t even dream of being. Amazing villain, the best intro and plot twist in gaming in my opinion, incredible setting. Yes, the ludonarrative is dissonant, hacking is bad and so is the twist villain, but still, amazing.

It's not enough to have a DirectX 9 video card, it also must support Shader Model 3. It gives the video card specs right on the box. If this is ignored there will be nothing but graphical 'glitches'. I orinally scored this at 10, because I couldn't give it a 9.8, because I felt it was that good. The game is still excellent, but now that I've completed about 70% of the game, I feel that it could have used one more month of QA testing. The widescreen thing was a design decision which is being adressed by developers now. However, there are just enough on the issues that have come up since the games release to make me re-assess. Mostly the widescreen decision. But the copy protection for the non-digital purchasers is a slap in the face to those that spend hard earned money. I don't know of any other software that would require me to un-install it, before I do a system format, or I lose one of my validations. So if I have a system crash and have no way to recover other than format my HD, there goes an activation. If I just forget because I haven't played the game for a while . . .there goes another activation. I guess I'd just have to resort to some other means of getting my game to work. This copy protection is one of the reasons piracy is so prevalent on the Internet. If I hadn't purchased this game off of Steam, and purchased it in a store. I'd be looking for an alternate means of running the software, if you catch my meaning. Expand

Only the Big Daddies and Little Sisters execute some modicrum of intelligence, and it's definitley not dynamic. Everything else is so heavily scripted any season gamer will recognize when and where to use certain skills for maximum benefit. I would have liked it to be a little more transparent. And there is very little environment interaction outside of burning oil, or electrifying water. Big Daddies are pushovers on anything but Hard mode. I was quite let down by how easy they were to put down, esp as you grow more nad more powerful. The hardest ones are the first three you encounter...if you choose to kill them then. Of course you can come back later and wipe hte floor without even being touched about mid-way through the game. Don't even ask about near the end of the game....you're a steam roller then. Aside from those qualms, it's a great game. But I can't give it more than an 8.0 -- it's mroe style less substance. Not a bad thing, but certainly undeserviing of anything too much higher in this gamers opinion. Expand

The suspense of a good horror-game is killed in frantic shooting and fiddling with the somewhat unintuitive controls (which I couldn't re-map for my own needs as the game seems to reserve the keys I'd like to use for whatever bloody purpose !)- for a game that promises such "sophisticated" ways of killing off your opponents the overall pace is way too fast and customisible controls should be a standard in every first person game, be it a simple fps or something that pretends to be something else. It's a shame the interesting setting und beatifully executed graphics desing are wasted to such a run-off-the-mill FPS - maybe Irrational should have stuck with their original concept of "secret-nazi-underground-lab", that way, everyone would have known what to expect ... Honestly, the problem was with plot points. The endings were definitely rushed, and it disappointed me that choices I made literally in the first 3 hours of the game so directly influenced the ending. I guess I fell victim to expecting too much of the narrative, and I tried to play the middle in terms of morality. I didn't want to pick one path over another, since I figured it was an game that was deeper than it turned out to be in the end. That was a mistake, as trying to play the middle chose my ending for me. Even though the game touts itself as being morally gray, it essentially makes it black and white in the end. Make one decision, just one, that it deems morally reprehensible and you get a the 'bad guy' ending. You literally have to be a saint the entire game to get the 'good guy' ending. That is extremely disappointing. The ending completely ruined the game overall for me. Up until literally the last 15 minutes of the game I would have rated this easily 90+. After finishing it...not so much. Oh well, I still have some hope for the Half Life story. Hopefully it will resolve itself in a satisfactory manner (Although I'm a pessimist and I doubt they will pull it off I can hope they will actually follow through). All that being said, it's a fun game that I recommend. I just don't think it warrants the scores of 90+ it is getting. Maybe, just maybe, if I am in a good mood, it gets a 90. After playing through the whole thing I say it is definitely high 80's, but not high 90's. A good spiritual successor to System Shock, and I am glad a game like this is being made and I don't regret spending my money on it, but definitely not better overall than System Shock 2. SS2 was much, much, MUCH better in terms of story, although Bioshock probably has SS2 beat in terms of overall gameplay. I would personally prefer story over gameplay, but meh. The story is decent, but is mostly told via a bunch of audio tapes, recorded and left lying about for no good reason. The lack of any grey area in the moral choices posed to the player is genuinely frustrating to anyone whose morals aren't either diabolical or saintly - That'd be most human beings. Again, a very good game, worth playing, but presently being overhyped by people who have either never played Deus Ex and/or System Shock 2, or love those games SO much they're going to give anything like them a perfect score. This game has beautiful graphics and a nice story. Unfortunately, this keeps most reviewers and gamers today from seeing how shallow the game actually is. I was expecting something similar to System Shock 2, but, to my dismay, Bioshock is very dumbed down in comparison. It is too bad that the industry only focuses on one group these days - the lowest common denominator.

This game is brilliant, i played it through with crap graphics the first time and it still scared the hell out of me. The rating of 10 is used with caution though as no game is perfect; it's a good game but at the end of the day it's just another shooter with good graphics that make the appeal of it larger. At the end of the day, if you want a good fright, buy this.

Basically, the only thing you do is kill the bad guys, kill the big daddy, get money, buy weapons back, rinse and repeat, oh and if you're bored you can listen to the tapes you find which are probably the only thing making this game worthwhile because the story was somewhat interesting but that's the only good thing I see in Bioshock. If you are willing to buy into the silly storyline you might be entertained, as there are a few (one) freaky enemies to encounter. Amazing game. It combines the literary works of Ayn Rand with an excellent shooter RPG. The story is very well written with lots of exposition and plot twists. The graphics for water effects are the best so far. The audio, including the voice acting, is top notch. Lots of ways to kill your enemies provides replay value.

Wow, talk about overhyped. Sure, the graphics are quite nice, but that's as far as you can go with the good points. Mediocre AI, ugly weapon animations, average sound, terrible storyline, sub-par fighting mechanics. Overall, just another FPS flop. Only instead of flopping, it got a hugely high score.

A unique shooter, very smooth game-play, the blend between almost magical abilities and weapons was highly enjoyable. Unfortunately, it did not place enough enphises on use of different weapons, it is possible to simply max out one weapon or one plasmid to complete. I do recomend playing this title, but its replayability limits itself to one or two times. 7/10.

It seemed to fulfill all the needs that a game has, and not go any further. There were quite a few weapons, more than one way to approach a situation, and a sufficient plot, but in the end, the game was pretty mediocre due to all the flaws and lack of any features to set it apart from so many other games. Someone mentioned that "apart from the vita chambers" the game was great. The thing is, the vita-chamber "never-die" thing was probably the greatest flaw of the game in my eyes. The game ALMOST had this great atmosphere of eeriness, making the player feel tense and fearful, but after the point that the player realizes there are absolutely no repercussions for dying, all the tension just disappears. You can run right at a Big Daddy and hit it with a wrench, no problem. Big, seemingly insurmountable mobs of splicers? Run at them, attack, die, run at them, attack, die, repeat. There's no tension when you realize that you can "die" as much as you like, and you lose absolutely nothing; no progress, no items, no money... nothing. After the atmosphere was killed for me, the attraction for the game really died off. I played the game on hard, and it was unbelievably easy. The plot was also worked up to be a big feature of the game, but I never really got into it. The endings were let downs, both of them. The story itself was poor also: For example, Andrew Ryan was built up to be this huge bad guy throughout the game, and at the end the game goes "OH! Got you! Lets ignore Andrew Ryan and concentrate on this new bad guy that we never really concentrated on before!" I never really found the last boss that evil of a character, because he seemed to be some sort of last minute idea in the plot. The plot was also filled with holes, like how the vita-chamber works for you and not anyone else: "it only works for Andrew Ryan's gene's" the game says, and then "you're a clone of Andrew Ryan". Oh! Okay, that makes sense. ...Right until the point where Andrew Ryan dies. And doesn't come back. There were lots of other small holes in the plot, none of them major, but enough to make me shake my head and deteriorate my view of the plot. Gameplay-wise, the game was good, but had, once again, some significant flaws. Things like the standard pistol bullets becoming absolutely useless after the splicers suddenly get stronger about half-way in the game. I unloaded an entire 25 bullet pistol clip into a splicer's face, and the guy didn't die. He was close, but he wasn't dead. I was almost dead, and before I could reload, I was dead, but the splicer was still alive. This was the fully upgraded pistol too. And you keep finding more pistol bullets after that point. Little things like that irritated me enough to make me frustrated with the gameplay. Everything this game seemingly had going for it - creepy atmosphere, 'revolutionary gameplay', deep plot - all had enough flaws in them to make me seriously question what the reviewers were thinking. Deus Ex, that game had player choice! Indigo Prophecy, that game had plot! Doom 3, that game was scary; I actually cared about getting hit by enemies! There are so many better games, and so many ways in which this game could have improved, and this makes me wonder why the average score is 96%, when this game is not that close to perfect. Expand

However, did feel like things were kinda trailing near the end in relation to the beginning, but you will play this title more than once, and exploring is a rewarding experience. If you were a fan of the Deus Ex series at all, give this game a try. Expand

Great story line, exploring is possible (not always one path to follow), addictive game play has remapped my reflexes (right mouse button!). Gorgeous graphics require equally impressive computer, and I had to tune down quite a few features (mostly screen res) to make the game play sketch free ... but even then, a beautiful game.

This is by far the best game to come out in the genre in YEARS! I have been playing video games for more than 20 years and this has to be one of the best of all time..hands down.

A great single player game, however a bit short, a lack of diffrent Big Daddies and way to many vitachembers makes this game lack a bit.

One of the best and scariest games I've ever played. A worthy successor to system shock 1 and 2. In fact, I daresay in many ways it surpasses them. The only game I've played in YEARS to make me scream out loud... not once, but twice! A must own. Period.

WOW! Just... wow. Such an amazing game from the graphics to the sound to the plot line. First off, the graphics are gorgeous! Rendered using a modified version of the Unreal 3 engine, everything is rendered with great detail and with amazing physics (which is needed in a game with lots of fire and telekinetic powers). The artwork in it is also quite awe inspiring from the creepy splicers WOW! Just... wow. Such an amazing game from the graphics to the sound to the plot line. First off, the graphics are gorgeous! The artwork in it is also quite awe inspiring from the creepy splicers to the monstrous Big Daddies. However, the thing that kept me in is still the amazing plot. You're hurled into the middle of quite an adventure with almost no details (kind of Half-Life-esque) and you just find your own way around. The weapon/plasmid(superpower) system works really well with an endless combination of strategies you can use to defeat the enemies in the game (which at times just come out of the darkness and swarm you from 20 sides) It's probably one of the best done games I've ever had the pleasure of playing and is just purely amazing. Anyone who's a fan of plot driven first person shooters NEEDS to get this. Expand

This game has it all. Great gameplay, graphics, sound, voice acting, and atmosphere. There is little to complain about with this title. From the opening cutscene, you get drawn into the world of Rapture. The dark atmosphere of the game is enhanced by the familiar sounds of old music hits from way back. When the action is at low state, you can hear sounds coming from other rooms, such as This game has it all. Great gameplay, graphics, sound, voice acting, and atmosphere. While the lack of true widescreen support is disappointing, there is no reason that anyone even remotely interested in FPS games shouldn't rush out and pick this up now, provided you meet the minimum hardware requirements. Turn the lights down (better yet OFF) and get lost in the undersea world of Rapture. Bioshock is, without a doubt, the best FPS since Half Life 2 Expand

I was disappointed. I don't want my money back, but it wasn't what I was expecting. While it does have an enjoyable story, there is a lot of shooting as well. I'm a big FPS fan and I really enjoyed the story, but the shooting got pretty tedious. I did play it on the hard setting, so maybe it isn't so bad by default. I did play it on the hard setting, so maybe it isn't so bad by default. No weapon had a ton of killing power, and that goes for the plasmids as well. This means that especially nearing the end of the game you have to slug it out with the enemies for quite a while before 1 drops. Even a headshot with the crossbow won't take down all the slicers.

To kill with plasmids is usually a 2 part move. Most plasmids are there to disable your opponent so you can more easily kill them with your weapons. For plasmids like incinerate that are designed for damage you might need to waste your entire mana bar just to drop 1 foe.

Also many people as well as myself suffer a crashing bug that shows up while in the menus that open during hacking and when getting a new plasmid or tonic.

I still think the game is worth buying, but it was not quite as amazing as advertised.

  1. A dark and astonishing masterpiece...I spend my career, and my gaming life, waiting for a moment when a game just astonishes me, when I can't believe what I'm seeing, what I'm doing. BioShock has five. [Sept 2007, p.66]

The hours spent playing this masterpiece were the perfect encapsulation of why videogaming is such a favourite waste of time for so many of us. Thrilling, terrifying, moving, confusing, amusing, compelling, and very very dark. BioShock isn't simply the sign of gaming realising its true cinematic potential, but one where a game straddles so many entertainment art forms so expertly that it's the best demonstration yet how flexible this medium can be. It's no longer just another shooter wrapped up in a pretty game engine, but a story that exists and unfolds inside the most convincing and elaborate and artistic game world ever conceived.

There is art here, despite what many would say isn't possible with games, from Roger Ebert to game designers like Hideo Kojima... BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience.
