Belle Boomerang feels like a game that is some 35 years late, and hasn't learned anything about games since the days of the NES. While the visuals, level concepts and music are gorgeous, the gameplay and design stumbles at every other level, meaning you might skip from one very enjoyable experience right into a frustrating mess of RNG deaths and controls that aren't suited toward the level design that Belle Boomerang has.

Many parts of the game feel wholely inconsistent, and either fail at properly explaining the rules to the player, or just like to give you a tiny platform and let luck decide if that enemy you want to hit is going to fly into a position where you can hit it, or one where you will never be given the chance to hit it and will just have to accept your death and start the section over for the 50th time. It's not enjoyable when you feel like your options are to just hope that you might be able to make it this time, even though you've already proven you can do that one room in particular countless times over.

A multitude of games this year have suffered from the same problem: when a section is good, it's exceptionally good, and when a section is bad, it is exceptionally bad. This is Belle Boomerang all over. When the game is at its best it's a wonderful and whimsical experience, bursting with colour and joyfully crafted imaginative levels, with a well balanced difficulty level and pleasant amount of challenge that leave you wanting more. But at it's worst it's a ceaseless pit of despair and repetition, devoid of any sense of satisfaction or challenge, replaced only with cheap losses and miserable design decisions. Fortunately I think the game just barely has more good than bad overall, and finishes on quite a high note.

You can throw a rock at the Steam Marketplace and hit a pixel art platformer that has heart but misses what made the era appealing. Belle Boomerang is not one of those games. It deserves attention, and I’m hoping that its charming visuals will help it achieve that. Don’t let this one get lost in the mix. It’s a tight experience, with its own unique challenges, and front-to-back variety. It may not completely reinvent the platforming genre, but it hits the target masterfully.
