    There's a lot to like in HBS's Mecha manager, but the uneven presentation, poor explanation, heavy use of RNG in combat, and underwhelming basic structure shove Battletech a bit too far into "hardcore franchise/genre fans only" territory.

    I love the Battletech/Mechwarrior lore and games. I've played them since MW2 including all the subsequent games. This one is a bust. The UI is clunky and the coding is very poorly optimized. It's atrocious. MW3 was the most playable version by far, but MW4 was more balanced. This game is clunky and slow for no good reason. The mechlab even lags.

    By far its biggest flaw is the    I love the Battletech/Mechwarrior lore and games. I've played them since MW2 including all the subsequent games. This one is a bust.     By far its biggest flaw is the atrociously awful coding - the game crawls and the graphics do not justify the huge resources it requires. I mean lagging in the mechlab is unacceptable in this day and age. It should respond instantly when I click from one tab to another.

    Another flaw is the turn-based concept. Mech Commander 2 was a top down RTS with pause and when you had pause, then you do not need turns - turns are just redundant when pause exists. However, I would guess that this game would not even run as an RTS due to the resource drain.    … Expand

    Easily the best battletech game I've played besides MWLL, it only really suffers if you play it to the point there is nothing else to do. That's where mods come in, specifically BTA3062 which is an amazing mod, that adds hundreds of hours of content.

    I have played over 2000 hours of this game -- modded and unmodded. I just cannot get enough, and it never grows stale. That said, the AI is a bit weak, and head shots occur far too often.

    The AI issue is "balanced" by the game throwing tons of mechs at you. To counter head shots, get Cockpit Mods as soon as you can. I come to this from the original table top.     I apolgize for kickstarted this.

    Sending 4 mechs vs full companys.
    Send 100 LRM vs a vehicle and it survives.
    Total RNG and they have no clue about the universe so a light spider have no problem taking down a heavy Atlas mech.

    Kickstarted battletech and bardstale and its only moneygrabs of old good IP´s.

    Tedious repetitive gameplay paired with uninspired graphics and a throwaway storyline. This game takes everything that was amazing about the XCOM series and recreates it poorly.

    The stars of the game are the mechs and the ability to customize them. Since launch a lot of the slow downs in the game have been corrected and the time between turns move faster. Overall, a great experience for fans of turn based strategy games.

    The story is atypical and forgettable and so hidden inside the grind by the time you reach a story mission you've lost the will to care.

    + Разнообразие побочных заданий с разной сложностью и наградами.
    + Хороший боевой баланс, много лорности. Разнообразие тактик боя.
    + Интересная система прокачки пилотов.
    + Прокачиваемый личный транспортный корабль.
    + Случайные события (типа мини-квесты) по ходу игры.
    + Сотни звездных систем Внутренней сферы.

    МИНУСЫ (скорее придирки):
    - Мрачноватое визуальное оформление карт. На некоторых биомах даже бывает трудно разглядеть что-либо. Из-за этого размеры и перепады рельефа воспринимаются как-то размыто, условно.
    - Всё-таки это не Мехкоммандер. Это другая стратегия. Расстояния заметно меньше. Как правило, если начался бой, то в данной локации он и закончится. В МС2, например, спокойно могли уместиться 5 баз и несколько рот мехов с техникой на одной карте, что придавало размаха и эпичности каждой миссии.
    - Хочется клантех и отдельную кампанию с ним. Может, будет как DLC, подождём, увидим.
    - Бывают фризы при расчете вероятности попадания, хотя сама игра идёт плавно, без просадок.
    - Нельзя пропустить фазу перелёта между системами.

    В целом к покупке рекомендую! Ставлю 8/10    … Expand

    GrindTech might've been a better name for this game. It is repetition over and over, the attempted fix is a RNG that dramatically favors the computer opponent. You will hit a 20 ton mech ten times with skills in the 8s and 9s, and it will not die, then it will come up and headshot you with a single shot. This is something that's actually happened, numerous times, just read some posts onGrindTech might've been a better name for this game. The art direction is great, the scene setting, all the intricate details of managing your merc company are fun, outfitting and refitting mechs feels very involved. If you want to swap in a rocket launcher in place of laser, you need to pay for ammo/upgrades it'll take time, and you need to worry about weight/heat buildup, and it all feelsThere is a lot of wonderful stuff in Battletech. There's so much detail that goes into building the world, and there are lots of small gameplay elements that help to build on that. The problem is that all of the scene-setting, music, and atmosphere are in service of weak core gameplay. Everything feels good until you drop into actual combat. The combat sequences are repetitive, and not much fun. The mechs are total bullet sponges, and you will waste 3-4 turns with four mechs just blasting away at a single enemy. Because of that, the tactical options are pretty limited: it's hard to execute a decisive ambush, hit-and-run isn't really viable, and usually it's best just to post up in an elevated position or a forest and out-shoot the enemy. Mechwarriors have few abilities, and they seem like pure buffs, so I don't know why you wouldn't use them. And there's no trade-off between moving or staying still. Like so many strategy games, there isn't much strategy in Battletech, and it's a shame that all the great elements serve such weak core gameplay.… Expand

    It's not a 100% direct port of the tabletop game but I think it's better for it.
    The campaign is fun, career mode gives immense replayability. Online skirmish mode is present but I haven't tried it. The biggest weakness are sometime slow loading and sluggish performance on large urban maps.    Excellent game let down by a few flaws. Captures the atmosphere of the BattleTech universe.

    Entertaining, but all the game mechanics are fairly mediocre. I was definitely bored by the time I finished the campaign, with a constant tactic of strong mechs + long range weaponry + defensiveness and taking out enemies one by one.

    The good. If you love mechs, and strategic use of weapons and turn based strategy, you will probably get some enjoyment from this game. In my 1st play through, I enjoyed collecting the different mechs and trying different loadouts. it was fun trying to create a perfect team and some battles were really exciting. The story is linear but it wasnt bad or good. It just didnt pull me in nor did I feel attached to the characters in any way. This is not an RPG by any stretch of the imagination although you can level up pilots and assign skills from a very limited set of options. Still, it was good enough for me to finish the game and if you read my other reviews, you will know just rare that is. I dont finish games I dont like.

    The bad. As mentioned above, the story is detached and not immersive. Side missions are very repetitive and uninteresting. Clearly they are randomly generated. Battles take far too long to complete making the game drag far more than it should. A speed option for mech movement in combat would be nice to speed things up. Despite all the different mechs, variety is actually an illusion. There are only a few different effective ways to load out a mech and the only difference between classes is how much you can load onto it. Smaller mechs are far inferior to their larger counterparts and each mech does have a larger version. They might have different names, but its really just a change in mass. At least that is how it feels. Even though there might be 100 different mechs, there are really only 3 with an upgrade in each weight class. Its just a matter of finding the heavier one. There is no balance in favor of smaller mechs. They also need to add more depth to the characters more unique missions and a lot more weapon variety.

    Again, its not great game nor a bad game. Its above average. Fun for a while but drags about half way through with no improvement made towards end game except getting heavier mechs... Give it a shot if you are a mech fanatic and like TBS games.    … Expand

    - clunky controls
    - super-annoying camera which keeps moving around and removes the feeling of control
    - everything is slow: a few seconds waiting here, a few seconds there. That's because of all the unnecessary animations and constant movement of the camera which can't be controlled or turned off
    - the game is poorly optimized. On my new laptop (with specs enough to run VR games), in this game everything is just laggy. Especially annoying when the camera just doesn't want to hold still. Yes, that's your price of firtrees and other scenery which are completely unnecessary and just add visual clutter on the field

    This game basically reminds me why I should stick to indie games and avoid anything that's with 3D graphics or feels like it's based on a franchise. The developers are totally unaware of what TBS players want. They want interesting choices and quick, easy controls. Instead this game is just trying you tell you about some boilerplate sci-fi world and to watch laggy animations of mechs running and exploding.

    To think of it, this game would probably better work on consoles, or even on mobile. Just not sure that its clumsy graphics would work on Android phone where it belongs. It's like they wanted a game about mechs but some stupid boss told them to make it a TBS, and then they spent half the of their development time trying to hide the fact that it's a TBS because some abstract 10 y.o. boys from the projects might find it boring or something.     A solid digital tactical experience that brings the essence of the tabletop and mechwarrior rpg to life. Strong initial campaign for single players, plus extremely mod friendly for retention value. 90/100 as it loses 10pts due to loading times and intermittent crashes, lack of co-op mode and remainder of inner sphere or unseen mecha.

Ici cependant, c'est la tactique qui est à l'honneur avec un tour par tour globalement bien fichu si ce n'est hélas de nombreux problèmes d'équilibrage (et de farmage intempestif forcé).

    Mais parlons ce qui est réussi comme les effets    Battletech est une vieille licence qui a déjà été adaptée avec plus ou moins de bonheur (ou de malheur) en jeu vidéo (cf les Mechwarrior 1, 2, 3, 4 etc). Ici cependant, c'est la tactique qui est à l'honneur avec un tour par tour globalement bien fichu si ce n'est hélas de nombreux problèmes d'équilibrage (et de farmage intempestif forcé).

    Mais parlons ce qui est réussi comme les effets sonores (très fidèles) la musique (sympathique) les animations et la présentation générale de l'interface de combat mais aussi de gestion... Il faudra en effet gérer ses pilotes et ses mechs, les armer, les équiper, les protéger, les chouchouter... Gérer également le budget de tout ce petit monde, car comme d'habitude l'argent est le nerf de la guerre, surtout lorsqu'on est mercenaire...

    L'interface de combat est bien faite lorsqu'on en a compris toutes les subtilités et il faudra un certain temps pour piger quelques trucs, car le didacticiel est étonnamment bâclé à cet égard ! Si les affrontements se révèlent tout-à-fait captivants par la suite, on ne comprend pas -alors qu'on alterne une ou deux missions secondaires avant de poursuivre la campagne- pourquoi on bute rapidement sur une grosse mission de merde de cette campagne à la con (de merde).

    En effet, on se rend compte que si on aligne pas un tonnage nettement supérieur à l'ennemi (il faudrait au bas mot dans les 300T) bah on touche pas une bille, car en face ce sont des monstres ! Voilà qui est fort dommageable et extrêmement irritant. Et ça signifie qu'il va falloir farmer comme un crevard toutes les missions secondaires afin d'accumuler du fric et de récupérer du matériel pour s'acheter et monter des gros mechs qui en ont une paire (des mechs comme Alain Delon par exemple, "qui ont des couilles !").

    Techniquement le jeu reste un jeu indé, c'est-à-dire assez vilain... Il utilise le moteur Unity pourri, est victime de nombreux ralentissements mais aussi de temps de chargement qui dépassent la minute ! Il est également tout en anglais et l'espèce d'histoire n'est illustrée que par de pauvres **** dessins avec quelques dialogues en QCM... (pas d'argent, on vous dit).

    Par ailleurs, dès qu'on veut modifier nos gros robots, il faudra attendre plusieurs jours... et pendant ce temps-là, les frais de gestion continuent de tourner, sans relâche... ce qui signifie se taper des missions secondaires pour meubler l'attente !... encore du farmage déguisé. Le jeu n'en reste pas moins intéressant pour sa partie tactique et l'ambiance évidemment inimitable du monde de Battletech mais pourquoi ce farmage obligatoire ? Oui, je suis d'accord avec Alain Delon : "ce jeu me casse un peu trop les couilles."    … Expand

    They did many things right. Mainly the graphic, sound, music and animation. Basically all the "front side" of things. Just about everything else (the "back end") is clunky and feels incomplete however. You can read all about it in the negative reviews.

    So i got this, played a few hours and then uninstalled and refunded.
    -Tactics are bad, AI is bad, story is bad... -Mech animations look good for the first 1 hr of the game and then it gets old and the camera angles are horrible. -did i mention horrible camera angles? Cant even see your units moving. -takes 1 month    I learned not to trust paid reviewers, 100/100, 10/10 best game ever!

It's ok for the first little bit, but then it gets incredibly, painfully, dull.

    I feel that if you had more options to field equipment such as vehicles, or even being able to field more than 4 mechs at a time, would break the monotony a little bit. A bit better mission design with a bit more variety would also be a benefit.    … Expand

    Awesome game. You have many soo types of Mechs to play and customize as you see fit. There is alot of planets to visit, nothing that force you to do the campaign missions until you feel ready. Not sure why so many people hate it. Yes its a bit slow, but you can turn of all the camera actions and play it like any other turn based game.     And it is magnificent, not without its flaws, but it is good. Fair warning, you will be waiting. A lot. Just, have a way to keep yourself busy in flight and later on, between turns.
    Many people, especially those unfamiliar with MechWarrior, tend to be hung up on everything other than the focus of the game; the combat.

    One of my primary gripes, is that there is not an easily accessible method of speeding up the turns/ combat. Accessing debug options and various third party programs can fix this, I'm expecting an unofficial mod to be made standard to alleviate this and a few other annoying things.

    However, the combat plays phenomenally; if you love Fire Emblem, this is the game for you. You will have to manage resources, funding, time, troop training, mech configurations, strategy and learn to become an admirable Commander of a mercenary company, or watch all of your friends die.

    The combat, while slow paced turns due to the size of the maps and the lumbering gait of the 'Mechs, is exceptionally well tuned; albeit considerably unforgiving if you make a mistake.

    If you think you're in over your head, it will be your responsibility to make the call to withdraw from a contract to not just save the costs of both medical treatment and possibly weeks worth of repairs to your mechs. If you think a pilot is injured and in mortal danger or if you think a mech is about to receive a horrendous amount of damage and you don't want to withdraw; eject. There's a red button in the lower left panel of the screen, make sure you have the right mech selected, and punch it. The head gets destroyed, but the mech is then removed from combat and can't be destroyed and the pilot's life is no longer at risk. These are the sorts of choices you will have to make or face crippling repair and medical bills––if you're lucky.

    The combat itself requires immense strategy, and/or net-lancing, and forethought before each deployment. The best pilots for a particular mech and the right mechs for the mission's lance. The variety of roles of mechs and team combinations are vast as well as what to consider for each fit. Spotters and snipers, vanguards, missile boats and even the terrain biome matter. Poor terrain will make melee difficult, being on the receiving end of a stability-damaging attack possibly tide turning; water may slow your 'Mechs down, but it will also give you a boost to heat dissipation and other biomes/ terrain will make your heat dissipate at a slower rate, giving the chance for your 'Mech to over heat. There is so much to learn and I will have to give a review just for the mechanics of combat alone, it was brilliantly handled.

    Music: Engaging and excellent at setting the mood; occasionally repetitive.

    Over all main story:
    Not the best story delivery or arcs; I entirely expect HBS to expand upon it––and I sincerely hope they do––with sequels. And I hope beyond hope that we can continue the adventures of our Merc company.

    Side stories/ factions/ overall lore of the 30th century:
    Beautifully tied into the MechWarrior universe, the novels therein I recommend emphatically.

    The main menus, star maps, character models (static/fairly generic-looking 3D models on board the ships) and between fight areas are lacking and could be vastly improved; however I see that as an interface for between fights, which is what it is. That being said, the hand-drawn images are both well done and evocative; the art is amazing, the 3D work just needs to step up.

    That being said, the between-mission decisions, actions and events are fun, occasionally repetitive but break up the monotony of interplanetary flight or waiting on repairs/refits/upgrades to finish and give us immersion with our company and the Battletech universe. I could easily see this expanding into further stories for sequels, DLCs and fan-made mods. This starts of so well and I sincerely hope that this is the beginning of a fantastic series; HBS has won me over and that is not easy to do.

    There is so much to go over; I feel like I'm barely touching the surface, this series has immense potential. If this were in anyone else's hands, I would be very concerned, with HBS, I am very hopeful.    … Expand

    I think this game had a lot going for it but it messed up in the end. When you first start playing the idea of sending out mechs of missions is fun, new and exciting and you are able to build out your squad from downed mechs but what eventually happens is that you do the same tactics in every mission and there is no way around it.

    Since you get a defensive bonus in the forest there is no reason not to do this and it is the only thing that grants any real bonuses that make it worthwhile. So in my option they could of done a bit more like xcom remake and make a lot more cover over the map (like ruined cities) or they could of made no/little forest cover and made it more mobile tactical.    … Expand

    Pros: Gameplay is good (just a bit time consuming). Cutscenes look good (why didn't they just use that instead of realtime bad graphics.

The game is built with modding in mind and already mods are coming out, similar to X-Com, that tailor the game experience towards people who want faster combat and fewer cut-scenes. Had the game come out with fewer bugs and a more obvious way to speed up gameplay it would have easily been a 10/10. Probably my favorite game in the past 2 or 3 years.    … Expand

    This is a thinking game - going in guns blazing will cause you to loose most missions or at the very least end the mission with a huge repair bill. You need to consider the positioning of each mech, armour facing, cover, ground height, weapons range, ammo, role of the mech, etc before making each move. Also pulling back and regrouping works great when things are going bad - in fact I ran out of ammo in a mission and won by taking the last enemy mech apart over three turns with just melee.    … Expand

    The action is tense and spectacular, with a SERIOUS focus on positioning and strategy. Some missions you REALLY don't want to bring your heavy mechs because you need speed. Sometimes you want your light mechs because you need a spotter for your three monster LRM boats. You could have a berserker melee force, a sniper lance, and everything in between.

    Balance is great. getting in close has high risk and high reward. Staying far out leaves you potentially vulnerable if something gets in close.

    Overall, this game is addictive, satisfying, and deep.

    I have pretty much two complaints that keep it from a perfect ten.

    Firstly, it needs voice acting. It's painfully dry in the dialogue department, and I don't care about anyone but Yang. Even the flat dialogue itself would benefit some even modest voice acting. Community voice actors aren't that expensive and would add a huge amount of depth.

    And second, line of sight and body blocking needs to be a thing. I want to be able to dive in front of my shadowhawk that got knocked down and tank all subsequent shots with my dragon. I have run into this multiple times where I think to myself about how much I wish I could have saved one of my mechs by just body blocking, and have fond memories of MWO, a wolfhound diving into the backside of our critically damaged VIP, burying his face in the VIP's buttcheeks and tanking every single shot, saving the VIP and winning the game.

    Give me those two things (I don't expect voice acting, but patch in body blocking) and I'd be one happy clam. As it is? I'm still having a ton of fun.    … Expand

    I was a late kickstarter backer of the game and I could not be happier with my investment. As with any game, there have been a few launch teething issues that have affected a few customers but HBS has been very reactive in fixing those quickly. There have been two patches already and a third is currently in the beta stage waiting for release. Personally, I have experienced none of the issues and have only found a couple minor bugs which I reported and one of them has already been fixed.

    If you enjoy BattleTech or SciFi type combat or big stompy killing machines then I highly recommend that you give this game a try. It is a nice relaxing style of game to play but at times it can still get you up on the edge of your seat as a battle takes an unexpected turn and you become aware that you might have to retreat or may just lose one of your favorite Mech pilots.

    HBS has promised additional free DLC and stated that there will be expansions or additional chapters of the game offered for sale in the future. There is also an active modding community which promises all sorts of interesting community driven content.

    Two thumbs up. Give this title a try. It is well worth the money.    … Expand

    As a long-time turn-based tactics fan and someone who wishes he had time to play tabletop, really enjoying this game. I haven't found the pacing, animation speeds, etc. mentioned by some other reviewers to be a problem at all - I take my time planning my moves and enjoy seeing the mechs play them out. Don't get me wrong here - it's not that I don't mind things taking a long time (time isAs a long-time turn-based tactics fan and someone who wishes he had time to play tabletop, really enjoying this game.     This is a good turn based game, but does have some flaws. Positioning mechs, turning them, choosing which side should be exposed to who are not easy to control at the moment. From twitch and YouTube, I have seen that nobody manages the weapons, turning them on and off due to their range. Pilots get wounded very easily, one hit to the head, and boom, even with armor, you have an injured pilot out for at least 10+ days, even with a good amount of "Gut" skill. Most of the side missions do look like lazy work. Side objectives being near the main one? come on! I see a lot of micromanagement potential here but who cares? If you refit a mech... well, good luck with that. A simple gun and your mech will be out of commission for days if not weeks. Tweaking your firepower depending on mech combinations for each mission? well, due to the refit time, good luck with that. Also no animated faces/mouths during the cut-scenes. I do not care much about it, but I know someone will.

    I was thirsty for an isometric tactical game these days and I love mechas. It is a solid game for me, but I should also express that my expectations were not really high on this one.    … Expand

The first time I stripped down my Shadowhawk, changed its weapons and armor amounts, the game said it would take 37 DAYSFor me, the main thing I don't like in this game that I overall like a lot (I am a big Battletech/MechWarrior fanboy), is that mech customization is kind of ruined by the time-factor in the campaign. One of the funnest things in any mech game is building your own mech. The first time I stripped down my Shadowhawk, changed its weapons and armor amounts, the game said it would take 37 DAYS to make the changes. In other words I would not get to use my customized mech for probably 5 or 6 missions. So I chose to just keep using the stock mech. They should have stuck with long durations for mech repairs and pilot injuries, so it feels like a punishment for bad performance in missions, but it is stupid in this type of game to apply the same punishment mechanic to doing something that the game should ENCOURAGE you to do, which is customize your mechs.

    Aside from this I agree with the many reviews complaining about bad performance, this game does not perform well for the graphics that are being displayed, and with the complaints of the slow pace of the battles. There really should be a skip button that moves straight to the next turn.

    The positives are still many though and I will put a lot of hours into this game. It feels very "Battletech," and I feel like they did a great job of turning somewhat cumbersome tabletop rules into a very fun ruleset that works well in a computer game. There are some great fist pumping moments like when your little scout mech crits a big guy in the back for an unexpected kill, or when you scrape by on luck and willpower in a heavily damaged mech. All the kinds of moments that have always made MechWarrior games and Battletech novels fun are present in this game. The cutscenes and story I have seen so far are passable, but I also wish they could have done a few different intro stories based on the background you pick.

    I may end up changing my review after I have some more hours with this game, but I guess I write this in the hope that the developers will see it and improve on this pretty good game.    … Expand

I had some bad expierence like that, killed most of my fun. In the end i ended my playthough because it is just frustraiting to fight in a 50 ton mech against something that is far heavier.

    All in all a ton of potential but when i compare it with the mech commander titles those are far better and they are friggin old. Not a good conclusion.    … Expand

    I am a long time Battletech fan. Been playing Battletech/Mechwarrior since the Table Top version was the only version and have played the pen and paper version in all its forms. I have also played and enjoyed most of the video game versions but this latest version of Battletech has captured the atmosphere and feel of the original TT game and original 3025 setting like no other computerI am a long time Battletech fan. If you're nostalgic for a table with friends, a pile of photo copied mech sheets, hex maps, and a pile of D6's this might be as close as you get on a keyboard and worth a try.… Expand

    I played MechWarrior, MechCommander and the TT, this game just satisfies all the right emotions for the BattleTech Universe!     I played MechWarrior, MechCommander and the TT, this game just satisfies all the right emotions for the BattleTech Universe! Making a game of this type is a huge complex task and to see the various components pulled together is delicious. I have played many games and not easily impressed, there has been a dumbing down of games in the recent era of games development but BattleTech keeps just about the right amount to keep the action going.

    This is what I really love about this game:

    1. The music score is gorgeous, atmospheric and makes you want to log in. Very few games have this effect.

    2. The story is simply amazing, the writing and cast of characters superb. It gives both sides of war, the darkness, the sadness, sacrifice and how the InnerSphere has for so long been at war. You can see all this from the campaign. I wish the campaign was a bit longer.

    3. The missions, the vast variety of them which adds immersion to the setting and makes you think about the contract you want to take on.

    4. The mission maps are breath taking, beautiful and mesmerising. Tactically they challenge you and how you play the mission. Factoring in manoeuvring and positioning makes the game the strategic game in TT it is!

    5.The mechs, their uniqueness in terms of chassis and weapon points really makes you think about what you want to do.

    6.I love that if you want to make it harder for yourself you can, you do not need to min/max or take advantage of certain mechanics and it is up to you.

    7. The systems and information about them.

    8. Chasing mechs and better gear, losing nice gear is a pain but makes you go out and seek better salvage. It is so great!

    9. Cinematics – I wish there was more as they are divine and the artistic talent is just superb!
    Overall the game ticks so many boxes and does so many things brilliantly! Other studios should take note of what HBS have achieved here!

    Please, bring out DLCs every 6/12 months I would be happy to drop $20-30 each time. Maybe you could do a ‘Hot Spots’ mercenary DLC?

    If you have not played this game, love tactical combat, mechs, sci-fi, rpgs or turn based games this is a must have!

    Being a Battletech game, remember that "Life is cheap, 'Mechs aren't". You will be pitted against overwhelming odds, but you command a mercenary unit, not a regiment of fanatics sworn to die for their cause. It's perfectly acceptable to withdraw rather than throw your people into the meat grinder. That said, this is a game that rewards tactical acumen. As you improve, and as you gain more loadout flexibility through salvage, you will begin to relish those three-to-one odds. After all, more metal is more salvage!    … Expand

    Fantastic game. Captures the "Mad Max" lostech feel of 3025 BattleTech. Good turn based adaption of the tabletop game. Good amount of content, excellent starting point. Looking forward to a "Long War" mod akin to Xcom in the near future. HIGHLY recommend this to BattleTech fans and turn based fans.

The open-ended campaign is a blast, as you take up mercenary missions for whoever will pay, engage in detailed tactical combat with highly-customizableAn outstanding achievement by such a small company.     A great game, 80 hours in and still not finished. Really good tactical combat that rewards positioning and planning. Backed up by an interesting sim game and a fully realised game setting. If you love xcom this is for you.

If you're looking for a thinking man's game, you'll like this title. if you're a 14 year old kid with no patience just looking to blow something up, I'd reccomend you go play another title. This game isn't perfect however, I'd like to see some more mechs, and more varity in the standard missions, but HBS is commited to releasing updates and more and I expect by this time next year Battletech to be a solid 9.75 or even a ten… Expand

The combat is great for TT fans, but some will find it difficult and to slow for their tastes. There is good company management system in place which puts you in control of your finances and is great if you like the merc feel!

    "well if you think that 1/3 of the population is gay or trans, and there are no blond, blue eye people in the future than no."

    I really like battletech and this game is true to the original boardgame.
    The controls could be better, and the camera is not really that good.
    But otherwise the game is fun to play. I don't think it deserves some of the harsh reviews here.

    It is fairly fun but it needs a lot of improvements.

    Pros:
    Interesting background story
    Addictive battle system for turn-based game fans.
    Good soundtracks

    Cons:
    Weak storytelling.
    Slow-paced battle
    (the playtime for battles can be significantly reduced if you cut out battle cutscenes in the options menu.)
    Poor optimization.

    Since those glorious days we have suffered a drought. It has been 16 years since the last of the classic Mechwarrior games was launched. MWO tried to fill our need in 2012 but the developer lied to the Battletech fanbase and the game we got was a Battletech skin on a shooter.

    However the drought has ended and a game that works with battltech lore is here. Battltech makes an effort to stay true to the spirit of the table top game. This means in todays twitch gaming world the game will feel sluggish and slow. The game also is punishing on mistakes, there are real consequences to doing things wrong.

    These two factors have combined to result in many people, that do not really understand the games target, to give it negative reviews.

    The game is a slow paced tactic simulation of the Battletech universe. not just the combat but the ttrials of trying to run a small mercenary company.

    On the whole I have found the game to be outstanding. Many of the hardware issues seemed to have been resolved by nVidia releasing a driver update. The developers have already released one patch with another in testing.

    If you like a strategy game with more than mass rushing, that has a deep lore backing it, then this game is for you.    … Expand

    Long time player, from tabletop to all the PC games. We all waited a really long time for MechCommander 3 and with HBS's Battletech, it has arrived. Good solid game. Running a 3year old Alienware 17g3 with no problems. The NVIDA driver update helped the load times and no crashes or other problems to report.

    It is a MODERN way to conceive a 30 year old TT, and still we can play with great graphics, great sounds, great OST.
    And above all a magnificent campaign.

    I'm about 24 hours in and I am thoroughly loving this game. Sure there are a fewshortcomings, and I'm writing this before reading any other view so as not to bias myself, but one thing is for sure: Battletech has me addicted! Things I love about it so far:
    -The management aspect (maintaining your navy of mechs, putting together effective lances, upgrading your home ship, etc). Very    I'm about 24 hours in and I am thoroughly loving this game. Sure there are a fewshortcomings, and I'm writing this before reading any other view so as not to bias myself, but one thing is for sure: Battletech has me addicted! Things I love about it so far:
    -The management aspect (maintaining your navy of mechs, putting together effective lances, upgrading your home ship, etc). Very similar to XCOM, set in the Battletech universe. What more could you ask for?
    -Combat feel good. Definitely visceral, and when you score a killing blow it feels oh so good.
    -Good pacing. Not too grindy, but not too easy either. After 24 hours of solid play, my lances are typically 50% heavy 50% medium.
    -Carryover damage/repair mechanic. I LOVE the fact that after a brutal fight that leaves your mechs limping back to the dropship, they will likely be out of service for the next 1-2 months, requiring you to mixup your lance with a secondary or even terciery lineup of mechs. This means you will constantly be evaluating the value of each mission and determining whether it's worth using your best frontline mechs or whether you can get by with a more "average" squad, saving your best for when you really need them. It also forces you to adapt your play style and become familiar with the various mechs in the Battletech universe.
    -Mission reward system. I love that you have to decide between money, salvage and reputation. Do you need to focus on short term, medium term or long term? Awesome balancing mechanic.
    -Learning curve. I love me a game with a decent skill/learning curve. When I first started out, I found myself getting frustrated occasionally on hard missions or when my lance came away more damaged than what felt appropriate for the enemy squad faced. As I have learned the nuances of the positioning, movement system, weapon systems etc, I have gotten significantly more efficient...and deadly.
    -The story. I'm new to the Battletech universe but I'm really enjoying the backdrop. Granted this isn't the achievement of this game itself, but I like the campaign story and I've definitely encountered worse when it comes to plot.

    If there's one thing I'm critical of it's the lack of voice-overs for much of the game text from popups and conversations and such. The battles tend to feel intense and the campaign does a greatjob of creating atmosphere, so when you're required to sit there and read all the text it detracts from the experience a bit. In the grand scheme of things this is a minor complaint.
    -No speed up button. It would be nice if you could increase the game speed during enemy turns. Granted, this would also detract from the experience a bit, and sometimes forcing you to be patient can be a good thing (creates pacing, makes each turn and battle more meaningful as it's more difficult to spam missions).

    That's it for now, I may update this review later as I get further on in the game. If you're on the fence about this game, just pick it up. I'm thinking there is a more than fair chance you will love it :)    … Expand

    I do like this game but... it is in need of some serious patching and was probably released a couple of weeks too early. Its slow. Everything from the animations to loading a list of save games.
    My top QOL changes for now:
    1. Give us an option to multi select save games to delete.     A fantastic game.

    They put a lot of attention to detail into the lore that I've loved for years. I can feel the shared love of the franchise from the developers. As someone who has followed the series since the mid 90's I can honestly say that this is exactly the game I have always wanted them to make.     So this hits all my sweet spots save for one. I can't slag the storyline hard enough - it's so atrocious and self-absorbed i'd rather watch 50 shades of twilight if only that would let me forget the cardboard cutout characters, half-assed apocryphal fairytale plot and twists you could see from Strana Mechty. About as bad as i expected after seeing *that* concept art. My only hope is that it never makes to canon.

    Otherwise this needs just a couple of performance patches and workshop support to be the best PC game of 2018, at least in my eyes.    … Expand

These people (or children I should say) are the same ones that the CoD cancer generation created.

    My only true gripes about this    Been playing for a total of 20 hours. No loading time issues, no cashes, no bugs encountered. I don't know why people who don't know how to use a proper gaming setup with at least an ssd drive consider themselves entitled to comment and give bad ratings here.     I appreciate the choice of the periphery in 3025 for the setting, as MWO and all the old MechWarrior games I grew up playing are set in the FedCom civil war/Clan Invasion time period. It was nice to see something fresh.
    I liked how they rebalanced the weapons - especially the smaller autocannons, which were underpowered in the tabletop.
    The camera has some trouble tracking shots, and a few other minor bugs were noticeable, but I had no major issues..
    The inclusion of gender pronouns was awkward - and they didn't even have mine, on account of my gender-fluid identification as a trans Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter/Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II. My pronouns are BRRRRRRRTTT/Pchew Pchew/*Turbofan Noises* I am triggered and offended.

    There are a serious lack of Battletech based games available and a terrible lack of remakes for the classics. While this game tried to bring back the strategy genre, it's lack of respect for mass keeps this game from hitting the Battletech mark. The mechs should be larger, move slower, and have a greater military design to their weapon effects.     Having played for 7 hours the first day I must say that I liked what I got, I liked it a lot. Without any competition for these kind of games I'll take what I can get. Game mechanics is where battletech got me, they are great and addicting. Game play is a mixed bag, mech combat is fun, but oh the horror of destroying a convoy.     I hate to say it but the games doesn't look that good, the graphics feel dated and the games engine is not very optimized. I see no difference between 1080 and 2560. But boi does my GPU(980 ti). And yet I play FFXV on high at 60 frames. Front mission 4 on the PS2 had more detail and was less blurry.

    There are some sound bugs.
    The (out of combat) UI is not very snappy.
    Loading, even on a SSD it's slow. Reloading a save? Guess I'll wait.

    It is a fantastic representation of old school Battletech. The tactical combat is layered with the maintenance and economy of running your own mercenary company. You have the option of building out and experimenting with different load outs or just trying to get by with what you have, if you are bad at managing the finances of your company. Different gameplay effects pop up based on your choices and upgrade paths taken.

    I am having a blast with the game. I love the tactical play and managing my mechs. Trying to build my power curve, while paying for upgrade, but still being ahead of the financial reports is really fun for me. The game is slow. If you are looking for a fast game play experience, this is NOT for you. I do believe there is room for some interface improvements to speed up animations and enemy move times, to keep your more active, instead of waiting for the other player or the AI. But I also acknowledge that is also part of the tabletop experience the game was designed around.

    I think there will be a patch or two to address some of the built in animation delays and hardcoded game play delays. The possibility of a a game speed slider or option would address a lot of those concerns also. I think the game is only going to get better with time.

    Overall I believe this game is a fantastic value and a great representation of table top Battletech experience. It is NOT for the run and gun type and it is NOT another Mechwarrior, but if you know what you are getting into, it is outstanding for what it is.    … Expand

    That said, I don't think the fact that they borrowed mechanics and systems from XCOM and Shadowrun makes this game any worse, and it doesn't make it less addictive, either -- not even for someone like me who's played a ton of XCOM and Shadowrun. What this game does do is take the Battletech board game, infuse a fantastic, memorable story and art style, and best-of-breed mechanics in one solid package.

    The only bug I encountered so far was the game doesn't support my screen resolution, 3440x1440, because it's the wrong aspect ratio. I play in 2560x1440, which is 16:9, and it's letterboxed. So far that hasn't significantly affected my enjoyment of the game.

    Performance-wise, it runs well (especially after installing the GeForce Game Ready driver for Battletech), but I have a very high-end system with an i7-8700K and a GeForce GTX 1080. The only performance gripe I have is that loading a game, or transitioning between the strategic map and a mission on the ground, takes a long time. The loading screens sometimes take 60 seconds or more on this high-end gaming PC with one of the fastest CPU/GPU combos available. However, this alone is not enough for me not to recommend this game, because it's just so much fun otherwise.

    And the long pauses between combat animations aren't enough reason to dislike or stop playing this game, either! I find them mildly aggravating, but far more annoying is when I really need to score a hit with my AC/20 cannon but tragically miss. In other words, I'm so busy obsessing about the gameplay that I can overlook this flaw. Hopefully it gets improved in a patch, though.

    This game has earned my recommendation more than most others in recent memory, I feel. These devs have worked extremely hard to make a compelling game in a very beloved IP, and not only have they delivered, but they've built a game that I think will be a cult classic long after the mainstream attention has shifted away from it.

    Based on my experience with Harebrained Studios' games, I believe they are to the point where they are replacing Bioware in my pantheon of game developers. Bioware has fallen from Heaven with repeated miscues, and HBS has been elevated to take their place as the most talented, most consistent developer with hit after hit.

    The best parts about this game for me are the addictive combat, the wide open customizability of your mechs and your ship, and the roleplaying dialogue and story missions. But even the randomized side quests are extremely fun on their own.

    BTW, it's hard to convey just how deep the combat is tactically, so just buy the game and try it. There are so many clever things you can do with mech positioning, target choices, abilities, teamwork of multiple mechwarriors, and so on that you'll never get bored of the combat. It's truly a generational achievement for the tactical turn-based genre.

    I've played the game for a couple of hours now and come to the conclusion the I like it. I have to admit that I do not share the bug, crash, low-fps experiences others have described in their posts. However, I do share their opinion that graphics seem outdated and gameplay is very slow.

    If you are likely to be annoyed by the above mentioned problems you should not buy the game.

    Nevertheless, I can fully recommend the game to people who like turn based tactical games (and of course Battletech fans). The battles give everyone enough room to plan movement, decide about which weapons you are going to use and how you want to position your mechs. In addition, the planning between the missions is very interesting as well. Designing new mechs, deciding which missions to take and then thinking about which mechs might be useful for those missions gives the game additional depth.
    I've read some complains about the difficulty level of the game but I cannot really understand how they can struggle so much. If you do not want to get into money troubles you have to use the tactical possibilities on the battlefield. So, I would say that it is not an easy game but it is not too difficult either.    … Expand

    This is a great game!!! Slower paced than most, but very detailed and fun to play. Very true to the original IP.

    Thoroughly enjoying this game. Couple of bugs here and there, mainly that the UI doesn't support ultra wide screen yet, but other than that I'm loving it

    Then there is an abysmal optimization .. and that cannot be stressend enough .. This game runs terrible on an up-to-date computer that more than exceeds the syster recommended specifications. Micro-stutters, frame freezes, CTDs, long loading times tarnish this product severely.

    There there is the UI .. while the information given is not bad, it is not quite sufficient. Especially chance-to-hit modifiers seem kind of wrong and do not quite reflect piloting actions taken or environment as much as i would like it to be. Same with initiative .. or the lack of information about the dynamic turns.

    On the artistic side .. maybe it is copyright .. but the mechs do not look like the ones from the Battletech universe. They are kind of similar .. but not even close to the ones from the roleplaying game.

    Customization is limited. Not near as detailed as the role playing game which is a shame, because customization of the unit is half the game. Adjusting, optimizing, fine tuning .. but what is given is a very simple mechwarrior 4 type of customization (or MW:O)

    Cutscenes and graphical fidelity is where its low budget shows the most. Models are not very detailed, the environment looks like 10 years old, textures are muddy and weaponeffects (if they do not freeze the game) are kind of boring and old.

    All in all, i think it is a VERY good effort (even if i just wrote a list of criticisms) and a very good effort reflecting the source material. But it is FAR from optimal (which is something i really wonder about .. cause .. it should not be hard to translate Battletech tabletop to a computer game)

    It is certainly worth the money .. and there is hope that future patches can improve the bugs and optimize it.

    in its current state .. its a 4/10 at best .. but considering that it is likely to get patched .. i ll stick to a 8/10 for sure .. solid strategy game with lots of hours of gameplay or multiplayer gameplay!    … Expand

Unlike some games like venerable Merceneries series for Mechwarrior, where you could opt who do you support, we are railroaded from the very first moment. It is somewhat of a disappointment, but overall not a huge negative.

    Now for the mechanics. I really liked the new initiative system, divided into phases which make more sense, giving an option to run forth and cease the moment or react to the surrounding. However there are also mechanics so easy to cheese out most encounters I'm puzzled still how are they considered a thing and feature in current state, namely: stability and concentrated fire. Instead of spreading fire over couple enemies, making the combat even, make the whole team pound one enemy at the time. The penalties they'll get will mean in most cases, either a crit will be scored, a pilot shaken and loose action, or they'll fall due to impact. It is sometimes hilarious to see a huge and mighty Assault mech drop like a sack of potatoes after a round of combined fire, in essence, eliminating him from taking action that round, which is way better then spreading the damage evenly. Not sure if that was an intent, but it is a cheesy tactic which makes encounters look rather silly.

    If this game improves it's performance down the line I'll be al for giving it a boost in score, however as of now, it runs terribly.    … Expand

    BattleTech is a special kind of experience that doesn't come around too often. As much as it demands from you, it offers equal or greater reward in return. As I said before, this property is very dear to my heart, so it brings me joy to see this game achieve what it sets out to accomplish with so much success.

    Return to the future to tin monster wars has its flaws, but even so Battletech grabs your attention and does not let go. Lovers of robotic battles will be definitely intrigued. [Issue#286]
