You MUST have a decent computer, with at least 1GB memory, AND one of the latest vid cards. If you do, the experience is out of this world! If you don't have the hardware, don't bother with the game until you upgrade. You won't be happy. BUT, this game was never targetted for anything but the latest hardware.

I also enjoy the friendly fire in singleplayer mode (you get kicked out in the multiplayer online mode) option because its hilarious fun. It is great to be able to have bazookas so you can blow anything up that you see. The game is great depending on three factors: 1: You have a good system to run it on. 2: You play the game correctly. By this I mean playing as a tem. Joining a squad, commanding a squad, being the commander. 3: Maybe more important than the rest is your internet connection. If you do not have a good internet connection I would not reccomend this game. Multiplayer is what this game was made for.

THE best online game to date. 64 players on one server is crazy fun. to the guy that said aiming is too hard, maybe you should learn HOW to aim n00b. in cas youre not sure how to, u point the crosshairs wherever you want to shoot. got it? and there are numerous amounts of unlockables. this game can only be topped by battlefield 2142.

Really nothing special. The online advancement adds a bit, but other than that things are the same. The physics engine is very limited, there is no major building destruction or object manipulation. Graphics are nice, but too hard on even high end system to use a res above 1024. Worth it if you're comfortable spending $50 for a game you'll play 10 hours and be sick of.

Realism is scoring a kill when you hit a guy in the head with a burst from a SAW - not knocking his helmet off. The damage models don't need to completely mirror reality - but if you beat an opponent to the draw and place your shot accurately on a lethal part of the body - they should die. In BF2 you can stand behind someone an arm's length away, hit them with three shot bursts from an M16 and watch them casually rotate around (while you put more bursts into their body) and return fire. To enjoy Battlefield 2, you have to find a game to join. The interface that lets you find a game is so crude and full of bugs that finding a decent game to play in becomes a painful and drawn-out task. The game itself could be the greatest game in the world (its not, not even close), but the game finding/joining interface is so bad that the overall combination is unplayably bad.

    Sound: 7
The sound is quite good, with a reasonable stock of samples being used, however sometimes it feels there is too little variation in the sounds. Support for surround sound and high quality audio (Using Creative X-Fi cards) helps greatly with the immersion experienced, and can make rather tense feeling situations.

    Graphics: 9
The graphics of BF2 will not disappoint most FPS players, although those who dwell on features such as Bloom and HDR may feel slightly upset at the lack of these features. For the scale of maps, the visual range is comfortable and does not cause problems.

    Longevity: 7
The scale of the maps, and the possible number of players (Max 64), allows for a good variety of situations aiding the longevity, although you can often feel you are fighting the same battle repeatedly. There are a good number of maps however- mastering each should provide plenty of entertainment for your £30 purchase!

Note: The number of expansion packs may help longevity, however I have omitted them from the scoring.

    Other comments:
The large following that this game has helps keep the multiplayer alive, and there is often little struggle in finding a suitable server. 'Lagging' is rarely an issue, although this is dependant on the player choosing wisely.

Yes it may be annoying and so paced on the big maps that require you to use vehicles, but you have to remember its trying to be realistic. You wont get from one end of a city to another by continually running with heavy ass gear and not tiring out ( unless you have a vehicle of course). Then there is the physics that needs to be considered. Unlike CoD4 and other games where the bullet goes straight to the middle of the cross hair no matter at what distance, at great distance in BF2 maps you HAVE TO take into consideration bullet trajectory. Having a guy's head in your sniper crosshairs at 800m will NOT give you a headshot hahaha. There issues with this game as there are with any other: technical from EA and having stupid egotistical people calling you noobs when youre trying to learn. I don't understand why EA didn't allow a "classic" mode for people who want to play without the commander stuff and artillery. Secondly, as other people have mentioned, your soldier with full battle gear can leap effortlessly like an olympic athlete 5 feet in the air repeatedly. This is really annoying as it makes dodging bullets a lot easier and looks totally ridiculous. If they must keep the bunny hopping, why not tie it to the fatigue meter so it similates exersion like the sprinting? I do like the sprinting in Battlefield 2. It is probably my favorite addition. There are some other nice additions like shooting from vehicles. But my main criticism for Battlefield 2 is the lack of serious innovation - Battlefield 1942 was pretty revolutionary, and Battlefield 2 feels a bit like a "Desert Combat 1.5" (a popular mod made for BF 1942). I think they should have taken a cue from all the historically diverse mods that came out for BF1942, and made a game that spans multiple time periods. This just doesn't seem ambitious enough. Expand

I just can't think of words that would do it justice. But, before you think I am a total fan boy I will give you the pros and the few cons it has. Pros: Great gameplay! Pretty evenly balanced in the firepower department. The urban maps are the funniest thing I have ever played, to be totally honest! The game has very little lag, atleast for me, and I have the game running and then two other laptops on the internet with tons of internet processes running on them that is bandwidth intensive. The unlockable weapons are better than the normal weapon of that category but not overly so, so that if you have this one unlock you will be "owning" everyone else! Cons: The loading of a level takes a bit too long for my liking, it loads the level but then it does this long "verification." Which in my oppinion is it still loading. There is some lag at the beginning and I am a major stickler for ANY lag at all. The game does crash every once in awhile, but not VERY often. In the urban maps, the tanks and APCs take forever to kill, even with the anti-tank rockets. Personal stuff about other reviews: In the review by "Scott Z." he states "Its all about luck because of the random bullet spread" I think this is completely FALSE! This has to be completely made up, I have NEVER felt like it is complete luck, it takes a ton of skill to actually hit your target, he then says farther into the review: "The sniper rilfes arent 1 shot killers, pathetic. I'm sorry but if a .50 cal BMG round hits ANY part of a human body it will kill you outright. The hydraulic shock from the impact sends a shockwave through you (like the ripples on a pond after dropping a stone) that tears organs and pops blood vesals. Have you ever heard a vet say "Well after I was hit by the .50 I......." ? didnt think so." This is idiocy at best, I meant if you got hit by .50cal sniper on your finger tip, which for some reason was out to the side of your body, you would not die! And the hydraulic "shock"...yea, that doesn't even make sense otherwise you would be cut in half by what he says... I mean this is a game, if you wanted to be COMPLETELY realistic I could shoot you in the kneecap with a pistol and you would be out of the fight. My computer is not the best in the world, it is just above the min specs for the game, which I did have to upgrade for, but in my completely honest oppinion, this game is worth it! Expand

Despite it's unsmooth movement, ridiculous hitboxes, and constant vehicle camping, it's still surprisingly fun to play. It's not competitive, it's not particularly balanced, but it delivers a fun experience. Will still be playing this over BF3.

Battlefield 2 is a fantastic multiplayer shooter game. This game really shows a life-like warfare with tanks, jets and other vehicles in the battlefields. However note that this is NOT a standalone/singleplayer game at all that means it supposed to play online with others. Also the community keeps making new mods for the game, so still this game has tons of replay ability.

I would describe the game as an amazing idea that has been implemented quite well, though there are some major problems with the game however. one is the very erratic accuracy of weapons in the game, and another is hit detection due to lag, and the final problem is the horribly put together menu and the engine in general. the menu system is just not put together well and the engine tends to both be finicky and somewhat buggy, for example, every time you start up the game, your resolution will be forced to a certain setting, which messes up window sizes on your desktop, but thats just a minor detail, just a pet peeve of mine i guess. Though with the menu system, the main problem Ive gotten irked at is the fact that the ESC button brings up the main menu from battle, which is a pain since if you accidentally open it up, you will have to wait a good 5-10 seconds to be able to close it and get back to the game... i never understood why they made it like that. As to the actual gameplay, its very addictive and very fun, especially when you get a team that is both at least moderately skilled, and can pay attention to the flow of battle. Teamwork wins games. The thing about BF games, especially 2 and 2142, is that they take a long time to get accustomed to. I picked up this game after not playing it for a good 5 years or so, and I was so rusty that my skills were almost non-existent. I would say to new players: "This game takes a lot of getting used to, I would say it takes at least 10-20 hours of playing to get the basics down, and its a continual process of learning how to deal with different situations and using your gear effectively. Its not about being a hero, its about working as a team to beat the enemy. If you try to play BF like CoD, you will be severely disappointed in your performance, as we seasoned players will pick you off easily since you stand out so much." By far BF2 is better than CoD when it comes to the sheer addictiveness and fun of the multiplayer, theres just this level of awesome when 64 players clash with military hardware. Expand

I have a superfast internet connection that has no problems with any other programs except this one. Im glad that EA decided to release this "game" about 6 months before it should be completed and released. This is more of a beta version of the game than the actual game. Crappy production, ridiculous system requirements, little or no team work most of the time, many bugs, and an AWESOME concept that simply isnt finished, give this game a three out of 10 in my book. My only hope is that the promised patch will magically fix all of these problems, but my hopes arent high. The first two patches only made the game worse. One main problem is the overall balance, opposed to what BF1942 was about BF2 it's an unbalanced mess. The infantry gameplay is terrible, a lot of explosives spam, inaccurate and unbalanced weapons. The land vehicles combat is very good but it's ruined by the overpowered air vehicles. What it does well it's the teamwork aspect, with the introduction of the squad system, the commo-rose and the commander BF2 can offer a lot of good teamwork. Too bad the netcode and the hit registration are terrible (probably the worst in the FPS games). Funny thing is you can have a lot of fun while playing it on LAN.

Vehicles are also hilariously over powered, tracking flying opponents with stationary guns is difficult to say the least and they often have some magical ability to know the EXACT gun which has a lock on them. Tanks will easily gun you down, APCs blow you to hell, Jeeps and buggies will come out of no where.

Maps are so huge that often battles become rolls, one team will gain momentum and just wont stop or the defenders will not budge, one map in particular of the Americans having to do amphibious assualt against the chinese is pretty much impossible for the yanks as you cannot get to the shore there are too many emplacements and the reliance on slow APCs or boats makes you cannon fodder.

In conclusion, buggy, unbalanced, actual combat between people is always amazingly ungratifying, short and boring while maps can either be unbalanced rolls or too big for you to see anything. Oh and spawn camping.

Aside from some crazy damage modeling issues - playing the game is fine (though the lack of a bot option to fill servers so we don't spent twenty minutes waiting for enough players to join the server should be REQUIRED). The problem is all the endless bugs that plague this game. I 'played' this game for four hours last night with four friends who purchased the game, and over 2.5 hours were spent trying to get all of us onto a ranked server, then trying to find one with decent lag levels, and once we were all on and playing - the random crashes that would hit each of us every so often pretty much required us to start the entire process over again. Getting more than one person onto a ranked server is, as has already been mentioned by other people here, nearly *impossible*! Game reviewer are either in the pockets of big game companies like EA, or have no business reviewing video games when they rate a game so incredibly bug-prone as a 8 or 9 out of 10, or an 80 or 90 out of 100. It's misleading, and dishonest. A word of warning to all potential players/purchasers of this game - wait at least two to three months before you consider buying this game. By then, it may be out of beta testing (we who purchased this game when it was released are essentially the real BF2 beta testers) and only purhcase it at that time if the patch notes for this game are sufficiently long, and detailed. As for the five of us, we're going to try returing our copies of the game this weekend. I was somewhat dissapointed in this title after so much hype. Have about 15 hours of playtime into it and I am starting to feel like firing up DC again. Hardware requirements are out of hand. Was looking at this as DesertCombat 2 but I don't think this even does DC justice. Don't get me wrong though... still fun once you get passed the horrible menu system and into the game. Battlefield 2, this is a great fps, you need to bypass the graphics and look to see a great game, this game takes a **** on bad company 2 and then bad company 2 takes a **** on cod, all the cod fans will saying OMG HE DISSED COD LOL IM A NOOB but really, this game is a masterpiece, it does loads of thing correctly, after the PAINFUL installation that knocked this game down 1 point its aBattlefield 2, this is a great fps, you need to bypass the graphics and look to see a great game, this game takes a **** on bad company 2 and then bad company 2 takes a **** on cod, all the cod fans will saying OMG HE DISSED COD LOL IM A NOOB but really, this game is a masterpiece, it does loads of thing correctly, after the PAINFUL installation that knocked this game down 1 point its a great game. The game play, if you look you can arrange squads and then you can assign them squads in tactics to be able to decimate the enemies. With the special forces, you can use things like grappling hooks and zip lines which will help you and your team mates sneak in to the enemy base and capture it. The commander position was a great design choice, you are the only one who can use uav or airstrike, and you need to sue them wisely to support your troops. Overall, great game, a must have for and person who has played an fps. Expand

One of the best shooters, great scale, great graphics, great gameplay and even better great multiplayer!
And also the addition of mods does make this game to be close to perfection, total modifications such as Project Reality, Forgotten Hope 2 (my favorite mod and WW2 game), Point of Existence 2 and Operation PeaceKeeper add tons of fun.

Could've been good. Ruined by the people who play it and by the horrendous lag.

10/10 ??? Is this the only game you own?? Honestly , this game could be 9+/10 but is too time consuming to: 1) find an online game 2) find one that runs smoothly. I get connection problems warnings every couple of minuts, and get disconnected most of the time, even on local servers. My other on-line games work fine. This game is a good game but not a great game. All tech stuff aside, DC or FH on '42 is better on the " Fun factor " scale, BF2 would be the same but is unplayable on-line. Single player is great though. Commander feature is challenging. BF2 is like the last Metallica album, lotta hype a great dissappointment. Save your coin and wait untill the reviews improve after things get patched up. Expand

The install process is long and tedious, more so than it really should have been. Messing with options works nicely... except for control configuration. Rather than removing an old keybind when you choose to bind a key to a new function, it just tells you you can't bind it. A bit annoying, but doable... unless you want to bind left shift to anything, of course. No matter what, it tells you it's bound to something in helicopter controls (despite checking multiple times and seeing no such thing), so so much for my preferred crouch key.

Widescreen support out of the box is non-existent or poor, and the 1.5 patch doesn't do much to fix it. The third party Widescreen Fixer program is practically necessary for a reasonable FOV.

Another problem one is bound to run into is lack of server choice. This is to be expected in such an old game with many sequels released after it, but at this point it's not worth it at all to get anything more than the base game. Special Forces is completely empty aside from a few "server padding" bots (the sort that are in servers but don't spawn in or play, just sit there to inflate player count), and the other two expansions come free with patch 1.5. The remaining servers lack in variety, with very few non-"24/7 [map]" servers left, and unless you're lucky (unlike me) or have a group of friends to hop into servers with, you're likely to have a frustrating experience due to lack of players willing to go for the objectives and such. On a related note, many of the small number of servers left have rules that can be seen as ridiculous and unreasonable, so watch out for that.

The balance is definitely lacking in the game as well. Infantry weapon-wise, it seems alright aside from LMGs that aren't the RPK having horrendous accuracy no matter what and grenades being far too "spammy". Air vehicles are wholly unbalanced against anything else, as they have a fairly easy time dodging any anti-air fire and ONE missile fired from an applicable aircraft is enough to destroy even a tank in one hit, without anything capable of doing the same against the air vehicles. Gunner beware, a single machine gun bullet from any aircraft hitting anywhere on a land vehicle seems to be enough to kill you.

Relating to the last point, the accuracy of some of these pilots and chopper gunners is pretty questionable. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some aircraft aim-hack floating around that bypasses punkbuster seemingly flawlessly.

Overall, despite how underwhelming my skill (and luck) at the game is and bad experiences all around, I'm likely to reinstall and play it again at some point.

My all-time favorite game, I played this for 5 years until Bad Company 2 came out, and BC2 is a great game, but it's really there for me to hold me over until Battlefield 3 arrives later in 2011. Probably the best teamwork game there is, and gives me the same feeling I had in my younger days playing organized team sports. Battlefield 2 is a good game, very fun with mods,is a awesome war game, but there it's just unplayable, the gun spread goes everywhere, units in the game could survive about 15+ G36C (or what gun is it) without getting a single hitmarker. Unplayable,do not buy

This was one of the worst BF games, I decided to go back and play it again for old time sake and the game has aged poorly, now I noticed how inaccurate the rifles are; how useless the AI is. Capturing enemy outposts is often deadly due to insta-death rocket barrages which you can't dodge, evade or hide from...even if you're in a building apparently..

    Honestly, Battlefield 1942 is

Honestly, Battlefield 1942 is twice the game this is, even now BF1942 still has good replayability. This game is a stinker, and judging by the reviews - paid reviews was a problem back in 2005.

Battlefield 2 is a classic. The vehicles, environments, classes, and weapons were spot-on. The loading themes for the factions are great. Sure there were expansions and booster packs for this game, but Vanilla still needed more maps, besides Kubra Dam and Mashtuur City.

Once you strap into an F/A-18 and rocket over the landscape, once you're crouched next to a tank trying valiantly to repair it while bullets ping off of the armor inches above your head, once you defend a waypoint and ask for new orders from your commander over the radio, all of those nitpicks about map balance or sniper power fade.

The thing to remember about Battlefield 2 is that it's exceptionally fun.
