Battlefield 2 is one of those rare games that only comes along every now and then. Some players may be put of by environments being smaller than those in previous entries to the series, but from the start of the mach until the score readout, Battlefield is one journey you don't want to miss.

Usually, this doesn't happen in 16-24 and 64 player games. That said, when vehical combat is more realisitic and helicopters hover above head while raining bullets at charging infantry, the combat is fantastic (bringing to mind Black Hawk Down - the movie). If you're looking for a warm-up match against the AI, no worries, it's pretty capable. The graphics, while not on par with Half-Life 2 or Doom 3, are lush and satisfying. The distance you can see (especially as a sniper) is amazing. The sound is also a treat. Planes roar overhead, guns fire in the distance, and bullets whizz by your head creating a very emersive experience. The control, sadly, is this games downfall. Now, it's not the gameplay controls that hurt the game but the interface controls. Selecting "Help" from the command wheel is much to hard as you must stop playing and use your mouse to select it (this goes for any command). Also, the menu and selection screens are clumsly and rather ratty looking. But, if you can get a game going by using the shitty menu and don't mind not being able to say "Help" during vehical heavy combat, you've got a great - if not classic - game on your hands. It should entertain you for a long, long time. ((PS - For a really good time, look for small battles or huge battles. The ones in between are a little boring)) Expand

I just can't think of words that would do it justice. But, before you think I am a total fan boy I will give you the pros and the few cons it has. Pros: Great gameplay! Pretty evenly balanced in the firepower department. The urban maps are the funniest thing I have ever played, to be totally honest! The game has very little lag, atleast for me, and I have the game running and then two other laptops on the internet with tons of internet processes running on them that is bandwidth intensive. The unlockable weapons are better than the normal weapon of that category but not overly so, so that if you have this one unlock you will be "owning" everyone else! Cons: The loading of a level takes a bit too long for my liking, it loads the level but then it does this long "verification." Which in my oppinion is it still loading. There is some lag at the beginning and I am a major stickler for ANY lag at all. The game does crash every once in awhile, but not VERY often. In the urban maps, the tanks and APCs take forever to kill, even with the anti-tank rockets. Personal stuff about other reviews: In the review by "Scott Z." he states "Its all about luck because of the random bullet spread" I think this is completely FALSE! This has to be completely made up, I have NEVER felt like it is complete luck, it takes a ton of skill to actually hit your target, he then says farther into the review: "The sniper rilfes arent 1 shot killers, pathetic. I'm sorry but if a .50 cal BMG round hits ANY part of a human body it will kill you outright. The hydraulic shock from the impact sends a shockwave through you (like the ripples on a pond after dropping a stone) that tears organs and pops blood vesals. Have you ever heard a vet say "Well after I was hit by the .50 I......." ? didnt think so." This is idiocy at best, I meant if you got hit by .50cal sniper on your finger tip, which for some reason was out to the side of your body, you would not die! And the hydraulic "shock"...yea, that doesn't even make sense otherwise you would be cut in half by what he says... I mean this is a game, if you wanted to be COMPLETELY realistic I could shoot you in the kneecap with a pistol and you would be out of the fight. My computer is not the best in the world, it is just above the min specs for the game, which I did have to upgrade for, but in my completely honest oppinion, this game is worth it! Expand

Given that the Battlefield series has won "Game of the Year" awards from many different sources. I would describe the game as an amazing idea that has been implemented quite well, though there are some major problems with the game however. one is the very erratic accuracy of weapons in the game, and another is hit detection due to lag, and the final problem is the horribly put together menu and the engine in general. the menu system is just not put together well and the engine tends to both be finicky and somewhat buggy, for example, every time you start up the game, your resolution will be forced to a certain setting, which messes up window sizes on your desktop, but thats just a minor detail, just a pet peeve of mine i guess. Though with the menu system, the main problem Ive gotten irked at is the fact that the ESC button brings up the main menu from battle, which is a pain since if you accidentally open it up, you will have to wait a good 5-10 seconds to be able to close it and get back to the game... i never understood why they made it like that. As to the actual gameplay, its very addictive and very fun, especially when you get a team that is both at least moderately skilled, and can pay attention to the flow of battle. Teamwork wins games. The thing about BF games, especially 2 and 2142, is that they take a long time to get accustomed to. I picked up this game after not playing it for a good 5 years or so, and I was so rusty that my skills were almost non-existent. I would say to new players: "This game takes a lot of getting used to, I would say it takes at least 10-20 hours of playing to get the basics down, and its a continual process of learning how to deal with different situations and using your gear effectively. Its not about being a hero, its about working as a team to beat the enemy. If you try to play BF like CoD, you will be severely disappointed in your performance, as we seasoned players will pick you off easily since you stand out so much." By far BF2 is better than CoD when it comes to the sheer addictiveness and fun of the multiplayer, theres just this level of awesome when 64 players clash with military hardware. Expand

My friends at school all really love one of two series: Battlefield or Call of Duty. What really ticks me off about it is that the popular kids all really like Call of Duty, which I consider terrible, and the unpopular kids really like Battlefield. It just goes to show you that these two franchises are at war with each other, and it has had really dire side effects on the world at large. I however, have chosen not to take a side in this war. I've only played the best games of these two franchises and that was it. I have already reviewed Call of Duty 4, which I thought was one of the worst games I've ever played. Now I'm reviewing the best Battlefield game, Battlefield 2. So, is this series really better than Call of Duty in every way, or do all modern warfare shooters totally suck after all? Let's find out. This game is an absolute blast to play! It is an online shooter with massive battlefields to fight on, and massive armies to fight with. This game really captures what it's like to be a member of the army and fight on huge battlefields. This game has only one gameplay mode, but because every map is so huge, when the game starts to feel old, other maps make it feel new again. This gameplay mode is conquest. In conquest, the two armies must fight to take control of the entire map, by taking over all of the control points. There is also a reinforcement counter, which shows how many more units on an army can spawn on the battlefield. Once one team controls more control points than the other, the other team starts losing reinforcements. The first team to take control of all of the control points, or get rid of all of the opposing team's reinforcements (this can also be done by simply killing the enemy as opposed to taking control points) wins. This game also emphasizes teamwork quite a bit. It is highly recommended that you get in a squad as early as possible. Also, if you are getting bored of going on foot to fight, or you have to take a long walk to an enemy control point, don't worry about it. There are also several vehicles to drive such as buggys, tanks, fighter jets, and even boats. This game also controls like your average shooter, so you don't have much to worry about in the controls department. In fact, this game is so fun, that the only real problem I have with it other than having only one game mode is that the jets and helicopters are really hard to fly. I found it insanely difficult to fly both air vehicles. However, it just goes to show you that this game has a good learning curve. The AI of this game can also be a challenge, which makes the game much more interesting. They do have a few problems here and there, but nothing major such as just sitting there doing nothing. Overall, no matter how you want to play this game, it will be fun no matter what. As for the graphics, while they may not be as good as Half-Life 2, which came out a year before this, they are still great graphics for their time. Everything in this game is very well detailed, looks the way it should, and perfectly replicates this game's modern warfare setting. It has settings in the United States of America, China, and the Middle East. All of these settings look about how you would expect in a modern day setting. The buildings, vehicles, and character models all look quite good. The only real problem that exists with the graphics is that despite how good they look, they might be a bit dated. Overall, the graphics of this game are great, if a bit dated. As for the presentation, it's great too. The menus can be a bit confusing sometimes, and the tutorials can be a bit confusing, but that's about it. Otherwise, this game has all of the modern military forces you would expect. Of course the U.S. Army is in this game, along with the Chinese, European Union, and Mecca armies. This game definitely presents itself as an excellent multiplayer shooter, and it succeeds in that respect. Overall, this game is a fantastic multiplayer shooter. It has everything good you would come to expect from a multiplayer shooter and more. The battles may be long, but that's just how they should be. In the end, I haven't chosen a side in the war between Call of Duty and Battlefield, but if I did, I would definitely choose Battlefield.

Battlefield 2 is a classic. The vehicles, environments, classes, and weapons were spot-on. The loading themes for the factions are great. Sure there were expansions and booster packs for this game, but Vanilla still needed more maps, besides Kubra Dam and Mashtuur City.

Singleplayer: since patch 1.5, the single player features twenty maps to play on against bots. By default, only the 16-player version of the maps are available but the 32 and 64 player variants are available via mods. The singleplayer is not representative of the multiplayer experience due to the simplistic AI.

Multiplayer: LAN parties, ranked servers, and unranked servers are all available to players to choose from. The options provided to server owners are excellent and are becoming increasingly rarer in newer titles.

Maps: BF2 featured 12 maps on launch, 4 post-launch maps added via patches, and 6 booster pack maps made free via patch 1.5. The map design in this game is probably the best in the entire franchise with all-time greats such as Gulf of Oman, Karkand, Sharqi, Wake Island 2007, Kubra Dam, and many others. They are very well balanced, provided opportunities for diverse playstyles, and facilitated a great flow to them.

New features: Battlerecorder allowed players to download files that had individual matches, Commander facilitated more teamwork than 1942, the 7 class system had new features like reviving, sprinting was now present in the game.

Mods: BF2 had a great modding community with one in particular, Project Reality, having a profound influence on future milsim titles. Forgotten Hope 2 was a WW2 mod for this game and is imo the best one available.

Pitfalls: unfortunately not everything was great about BF2. 5 of 7 classes carried 4 frag grenades when caused grenade spam on most maps, claymores couldn't be easily disposed of and locked down chokepoints, servers were unstable and hitreg was unacceptable. Air-land balance was very poor as well because the mobile AA was a joke, TV missiles were one shot kills against all vehicles, twin seat bombers wasted everything beneath them.

Overall, this game gets a 91/100. Although it had problems with bugs and crashes during the beginning of its lifespan, it went on to deliver one of the greatest multiplayer FPS experiences I've ever had and is a top 3 BF game.

It seems the developers of Dice think the human head is about 2 inches in diameter., because you have to land a sniper shot right on the nose to hit, and I don't think there ARE any hitboxes on the arms. the legs and feet? yes, 'cus you can shoot them when their legs jut out through walls while proning. On a more positive note: The maps are huge and unique in geography, the vehicles are very much fun to use, all of them, except maybe the inflatable landing boats, and the combat roles the different classes play out is refreshing: The sniper can lay down claymores and sit back, plinking enemies from, in some maps, perhaps up to a quarter of a mile away, considering he/she is good, and has a good gaming rig, the combat medic can heal allies, and revive those who were fragged, saving them from having to respawn back at base, the support guy can lay down suppressing fire and resupply his allies with ammo, the spec ops guy can sabotage bridges, vehicles, and team assets (such as artillery and UAV trailers) with sticky C4 charges (pity the soldier who takes off in a jet only to have it explode in midflight from a hidden c4 charge stuck on it's body), The engineer repairs vehicles and lays down anti-tank mines, the anti-armour troop works on destroying said vehicles with wire-guided rockets (note that the armour guy in bf2 has his own gun ALONG with a pistol, not just a pistol like in 1942), and the assault guy.... pretty much is a meat-shield. He focuses on pure murder-power, but he can throw smoke and flash-bang grenades, now. The only negatives to this game in comparison to the older ones is that there are no pilotable naval units in the game like in 1942. The aircraft carriers are part of the environment, and cannot be controlled, and there are no subs or destroyers. Also there are no long-range artillery units anymore. Also, I miss being able to jump into the landing crafts and ride them without actually entering them, like you could in 1942, and similarly you cannot ride the black hawks in the same fashion, like in BF: Desert Combat. Vehicle riding may be considered unbalanced in most games, but considering the scale of most of the maps, and the fact that BF2 was developed on realism, and in the real world you may see up 10 or even 20 soldiers piled onto a moving tank or APC like penguins on a melting iceburg, the concept should have been kept. Sound: 7
The sound is quite good, with a reasonable stock of samples being used, however sometimes it feels there is too little variation in the sounds. Support for surround sound and high quality audio (Using Creative X-Fi cards) helps greatly with the immersion experienced, and can make rather tense feeling situations.

    Graphics: 9
The graphics of BF2 will not disappoint most FPS players, although those who dwell on features such as Bloom and HDR may feel slightly upset at the lack of these features. For the scale of maps, the visual range is comfortable and does not cause problems.

    Longevity: 7
The scale of the maps, and the possible number of players (Max 64), allows for a good variety of situations aiding the longevity, although you can often feel you are fighting the same battle repeatedly. There are a good number of maps however- mastering each should provide plenty of entertainment for your £30 purchase!

Note: The number of expansion packs may help longevity, however I have omitted them from the scoring.

    Other comments:
The large following that this game has helps keep the multiplayer alive, and there is often little struggle in finding a suitable server. 'Lagging' is rarely an issue, although this is dependant on the player choosing wisely.

It took much time for "Call of Duty" creators to bring players to the modern action, but EA decided to let us use modern weapons much earlier.

First big sequel to the popular series brought us large maps, various class types and tons of fun time. I have to say that in "Battlefield 2" I was never a big fan of vehicles. Somehow they seemed I bit sluggish so mostly I enjoyed combat on foot, which allowed me to use at my best my favourite class medic. Defibrillator unit was firstly introduced to the game and significantly changed gameplay. Having a medic nearby would allow more heroic actions than you had previously let yourself to perform. Assault class was my second favourite one, although my friends often gave preference to engineers.

Having one right behind your tank would make you almost unstoppable force. Playing as a sniper was difficult for me, because I never understood a sniper rifle that did not kill an enemy with a single shot.
A new feature that was introduced but never appreciated, by me at least, was artillery fire, that was often used as bombing of the point at the moment when it was captured by an enemy.

To give more balance against heavy vehicles new rocket launchers were introduced, that were statically set at some places and allowed firing missiles.

"Battlefield 2" also had AI partners that could make you a company. Having AI in opposite team often made playing a nightmare as making headshots with a pistol from unbelievable distance was not a big deal for them.

Weapon's kickback was not a big deal to get used to, but somehow I consider it a problem, because this way you can't 'feel' weapons.

Anyway, everything that was not appreciated by me doesn't make the game any worse, so at the moment of release, eight long years ago I would recommend it to any player who liked shooters.

Really a 7.5-8. All the fun of Battlefield 1942 with elements stolen from those poor DC guys. Glad to see scoring is based on classes now, so there's acutally a point to being a medic, engineer, etc. The sticky interface, sluggish response time, and plethora of bugs often make it unplayable. And spawn point locations really suck - feels easier to spawn camp than in BF1942.

Really nothing special. The online advancement adds a bit, but other than that things are the same. The physics engine is very limited, there is no major building destruction or object manipulation. Graphics are nice, but too hard on even high end system to use a res above 1024. Worth it if you're comfortable spending $50 for a game you'll play 10 hours and be sick of.

Great concept. It sucks until you get the latest 1.3 patch then you have Co-op, and you no longer have to worry about team killing, bunnyhopping, dolphin flopping, hacking, teens. But to get the ABSOLUTE most out of this game wait until the Project Reality mod is finished then start having LAN parties with friends or just go join a decent clan. Expand

A 7 this a good most of the time. before you six hours have gone by. While it works most of the there are problems. I went bought the nice big include all games bf2 complete edition for $40. Let say on the one dvd. It took well over an hour to install. The first time while it was patching itself, stopped froze had to restart. eventually worked, not my other okay computer for some reason. The first thing noticed I could not play euroforce, code did NOT work. Had to take itback. I only got a new cause I knew the geek squad at best buy. the works. Other than all the other dumb crap I'v been through such sum random crashes I can put up with. But what really got me mad was the stats tracker from ea stopped working right before I would have got some guns. Big pisser, That is what got me mad. let's just this there help support phone is a robot that was zero help at all. After the stats problem I have not played BF2 since. Expand

I am a huge fan of Battlefield 1942 - played it to death, and still play matches now and then. I am a bit disappointed by this sequel for a few reaons: I find the commander-based artillery strikes rather frequent and annoying. If you are pinned back at one base, the enemy relentlessly pummels you with this artillery, which gets old fast. (respawn, die, respawn, die). I don't understand why EA didn't allow a "classic" mode for people who want to play without the commander stuff and artillery. Secondly, as other people have mentioned, your soldier with full battle gear can leap effortlessly like an olympic athlete 5 feet in the air repeatedly. This is really annoying as it makes dodging bullets a lot easier and looks totally ridiculous. If they must keep the bunny hopping, why not tie it to the fatigue meter so it similates exersion like the sprinting? I do like the sprinting in Battlefield 2. It is probably my favorite addition. There are some other nice additions like shooting from vehicles. But my main criticism for Battlefield 2 is the lack of serious innovation - Battlefield 1942 was pretty revolutionary, and Battlefield 2 feels a bit like a "Desert Combat 1.5" (a popular mod made for BF 1942). I think they should have taken a cue from all the historically diverse mods that came out for BF1942, and made a game that spans multiple time periods. This just doesn't seem ambitious enough. Expand

I suppose the game is good enough, but I dont go for it. Same commercial thing as before. Never played Battlefield? Then you can give this one a try.

Apart from being able to blow up bridges, artillery there is nothing really new here. The physics are no where near Far crys as objects simply dissapear in the game ... Just another version of Desert combat Mod . Too much hype. there are better explosion effects and graphics in games like mercenaries and Battlefront.

Despite it's unsmooth movement, ridiculous hitboxes, and constant vehicle camping, it's still surprisingly fun to play. It's not competitive, it's not particularly balanced, but it delivers a fun experience. Will still be playing this over BF3.

I like what the battlefield series is trying to do, but they have some issues. BF2 has way too many exploits. Hit-boxes come unglued when player's run around. Bunny hopping can make you immune to being blasted by an entire clip at point blank range. Often the game involved running this marathon across the game map only to die and start all over again. I haven't played the full version yet, but the demo horrifies me. I think the gameplay seems fairly compelling, but the interface makes that almost irrelevant. The menus, HUDs, map, and basically everything in the game is unintuitive, slow, and hard to use. On top of that, the graphics are pretty unimpressive. Unless you're impressed by a lot of bland boxy tan ground.I haven't played the full version yet, but the demo horrifies me. Overall I get the impression that they just made some new maps and command features and tacked them onto BF1942 or Desert Combat.

Addictively fun game, but serious issues like an absolutely terrible menu / server browser, lag so bad in 64 player servers as to make the game unplayable, random crashes, and a ridiculous problems with teamkilling (accidental and puposeful) destroy this game's potential greatness. I impatiently await patches!!!

Once you strap into an F/A-18 and rocket over the landscape, once you're crouched next to a tank trying valiantly to repair it while bullets ping off of the armor inches above your head, once you defend a waypoint and ask for new orders from your commander over the radio, all of those nitpicks about map balance or sniper power fade.

With incredible communication tools, top-notch visuals, and a fantastic balance of vehicles and classes, EA has won the battle and the war of online team-based shooters.

The thing to remember about Battlefield 2 is that it's exceptionally fun.
