Probably better on console, but seeing as I don't have a console, that point is somewhat moot. DX11 made the game completely unplayable at launch, but the problem is now patched. DX11 made the game completely unplayable at launch, but the problem is now patched. Right now, my Core i5 + GTX570 get playable framerates with DX11 with normal tessellation and normal Physx or DX11 off and high Physx. The controls are obviously console derived, but the combo takedowns are now mapped to one button (r/t/y) rather than the awkward SHIFT/CONTROL+left/middle/right scheme used in Arkham Asylum. If you can get past its deficiencies on the platform, the story, characters, and gameplay are very good and addictive as hell: I've logged almost 80 hours thus far. In few months, you will probably be able to get it almost as cheap as a second hand console game on Steam and be able to play as Catwomen to boot. That's not a bad deal for one of the best games of 2011.

And for God's sake, stop complaining about console ports. Even Crysis 2 made 85% of it money on consoles, and that had to be one of the most anticipated PC releases of 2011. Skyrim set records on Steam with around 300K people playing at once, but sold something like 3.4 million overall on PC and consoles; again, even for PC stalwarts like action RPGs, revenue from the platform just can't compete with consoles. Frankly, I'm glad companies even bother porting as many games to PC as they do. Moral of the story: if it looks like they hardly spent any money on the PC port, it's because that's probably how much it's going to make.
Now we get to the part of the rant where I throw out half-assed theories as to what pushed PC gaming down the toilet.
    1. Computers are cheap. Margins are low for just about every company except a certain fruit themed outfit with which you may be familiar. Discrete graphics chips are expensive. Many people will never use their machine for anything more intensive then HD video playback (which integrated graphics do pretty well now), and most probably don't even use it for that. Most people just want a machine for internet and office work, and they want it for less than $500. You can't make a machine with discrete graphics marketable to most people. They really don't know what it is, and if they did, they probably wouldn't think it justified the cost.
    2. Hardware is specialized. In 1996, you could run Quake or Duke Nukem 3D on just about any reasonably current PC â

If you can appreciate a beat 'em up game with simple controls, this game will give you the most polished game experience there is. This game effortlessly captures the holy grail of games: something that is easy to pick up, gradual in its refinement and hard to master.

Technically, this game deserves a 10/10. The only reason I don't do that is because I've seen better in Arkham Asylum. I'm splitting hairs here, but the combat system in Batman:AC feels slightly less in your control than in Batman:AA.

The story is even better than in Arkham Asylum and it will draw you in and keep you going until the end and then the end will leave you begging for more.

Definitely my favourite of the series so far even though Arkham Origins holds some improvements it's not by far as innovative and immersing as this game was compared to it's predecessor.

Graphics aren't just "ok", graphics are quite good. The combat scenes are UNIQUE, from my point of view. I've never played a game that offered such a display of martial art beating before.
This game confirms Batman's quotation from Arkham Asylum: "I eat punks like these for breakfast".
You'll be facing bands of up to 15-20 strong all by yourself, if you are skilful you'll beat them up without being hit! Movements and sounds are quite realistic, in fact it may hurt just to watch/hear Batman fight (he is such a beating machine). In this game you have plenty of missions to complete, skills to learn, gadgets to upgrade, trophies to collect, enemies to beat up, etc.
If you liked Arkham Asylum you'll like this one as it offers more variety of scenarios, movements and enemies.

I would say that it is a little cherry atop of a nice and delicious fruit-cake, it could be an expansion instead of a full game. But of course, that is my own personal opinion.

    Recommendations/Tips:

I had a great time playing Arkham City. The combat is good and the story is engrossing. However, I did not find the open world elements of the game to be very well done, and a few things about the port could have been done better, namely a few of the menu controls and GFWL.

The story of the game was very good and playing through it was very fun, but I was quite surprised when it came to an end when I only had about 30% completion. There is really no incentive to go anywhere but the main objective, and the theme of the game makes it feel as though the city isn't really somewhere you want to be exploring, but somewhere you should be skulking in the shadows, getting ready for your next move. Because of this, I did not do very many of the side objectives, even the ones that were a part of the story, because they just didn't seem as interesting as actually continuing the story. Also, the storyline makes it seem like you're very short on time, so it is a little immersion breaking to go off on an adventure.

I ended up with about half of the upgrades possible, and I assume that you are meant to have most or all of them by the time the story is done. I think that this is a flaw of the game's design. The open world was not interesting to explore, the main method of travelling through the city is on the rooftops, very disconnected from what is going on below, so there was really no reason to do anything but the story nothing else garnered my interest.

I have had no problems with the PC port, performance has been great on maxed out settings, graphics are amazing, and most of the controls are great. The places where I think controls could have improved are in the key bindings to switch between gadgets. It was hard to try to remember which gadget was on which key, and scrolling through them was a bit inconvenient with there being so many. The other controls that I didn't like were the map controls, especially for things like changing the objective. The ke bindings should always be focused around the standard way of playing games WASD, space, and mouse, as well as the surrounding keys. Enter and backspace really shouldn't be used much if at all.

The only other complaints I have are GFWL and the loading screen. GFWL is just annoying DRM that the game doesn't benefit from, and I think that everyone would be happier without it. The last thing is that when you start up the game, you have several unskippable credits for the developers and such. On every other game that I play, these are skippable. It's a bit annoying that they aren't on Arkham City when I want to play the game, I don't want to also have to watch the credits for the umpteenth time.

Overall, I loved the game. It had a few things wrong with it, but nothing that actually detracted from the experience of playing it. From my playthrough of the game, I would give it a 10/10, but with the problems outside of what I experienced, mainly the fact that I didn't experience them, and because of the other small annoyances, I give it a 9/10 overall.

Best superhero game ever. Now when its fully on Steam there is nothing to stop you from playing it right away. Fights will keep you entertained for the whole time, using gadgets is fun. Story is great and referring to all Batman films. You really feel like dark knight when playing this. Awesome!

Once I started this game I simply could not put it down and I honestly believe this is one of the most outstanding games in recent memory. The port in the only downside to ANY of these heavily combat based games that are clearly meant for controller but using a keyboard and mouse wasn't a terrible experience.

Score: 9/10 almost perfect except for the port!

Batman: Arkham City, the definitive Superhero game! (In my opinion)

    Pros:
    Stunningly fantastic visuals and effects
    Perfect Voice acting
    Lots of side missions
    Excellent and well paced combat

    Cons:
The world is slightly too small

Despite the slightly small open-world, this game has everything you would expect from a superhero game!

The game revolves around a small section of Gotham City, known now as "Arkham City", where gangs and thugs seem to have free-run of there own little slice of Gotham. It allows much greater freedom than Arkham Asylum did - and is all the better for it. You start with all the abilities and gadgets that you picked up in the previous game, and unlock a ton more too. As such, it may have a steep learning curve for people that did not play the previous game, but once you get into it, it's fluid, responsive and great fun.

Upgrades to your Batsuit and character(s) abilities are bought with XP, that is earned fighting thugs - and you are rewarded for slick moves, long combos and variety. You can also quick-fire gadgets during combat, adding another really cool addition to the game.

Batman Arkham City is the sequel to Batman Arkham Asylum so those who played the original with be at home with this installment to the arkham series. The gameplay in Arkham City is vastly improved with better animations, more moves and a better upgrade system.

The moves in this game are brilliant, its so satisfying to smash a thugs skull in.You can upgrade your amour and moves. You can also upgrade your gadgets to which is a great addition to the game.Like the original the mood set for the game is dark, gritty and dirty.

Which is a good thing because that works best for Batman, especially in a game like this.

The map is much bigger,as the title suggests its a city so is bigger better? Well yes it works, with a variety of side missions, thugs all over and lots of buildings it improves from the original. Its a bigger better game that overall is a great play trough

    DLC:
The DLC for this game is great, there a Batman skins, more challenge maps and a separate story but connected to the main one where you play as robin-Harley Quinns revenge, but only play this if you have completed the main story as it has lots of spoilers,it wont make sense either if you don't complete the main story.

Overall Arkham City is a great game,I give it a solid 9/10 just as good as the original.Better in different ways.

Batman: Arkham City is the high point of the Arkham franchise. The characters, the atmosphere, the story, the combat, the music, the visuals – all come together in a way that few other games achieve. Marred by some performance issues on PC (turning off DX11 features fixes most of the issues). If Batman has a place in your fandom, Arkham City has a place in your game library.

Total size on my hard-drive (GOTY): 19GB

+ All of Gotham’s criminals have been thrown into an old, walled-off section of the city. A great excuse to bring the entire rogue’s gallery together. Exactly who brought this about and how? There’s your story. Simple but effective. (Like Arkham Asylum, the story is the creation of Paul Dini, who was a major part of the classic ‘90s TV show, Batman: The Animated Series.)
+ Batman, Robin, Catwoman, Hugo Strange, Penguin, Two-Face, Joker – there are many characters packed into Arkham City, all of them superbly voice-acted and visually realized. In addition to Kevin Conroy (as Batman) and Mark Hamill (as the Joker), Grey DeLisle brings perfection to Catwoman.
+ Great world design. Though not as large as Arkham Origins or the follow-up Arkham Knight, Arkham City is full of rooftops and shadowy corners that bear exploring. A number of buildings can be entered, bringing another dimension to the exploration (entering buildings is not seamless though - there is a loading screen).
+ The visuals look fantastic, if occasionally low-res. Light-shafts and shadows are particularly well-rendered, which play to Arkham City’s strengths. Lip-synch occasionally has issues.
+ Ambient sounds of crunching snow, wind and waves are enhanced by superb mood music and deep shadows everywhere. Finding the best brightness setting for your eyes can be tricky, but there’s no denying the atmosphere.
+ Soundtrack is superb. In contrast to Arkham Asylum’s more moody music, Arkham City immediately goes for an unabashed heroic feel. While the big heroic tracks are most obvious, the quieter tracks wonderfully fill the poignant silences.
+ The best combat of any of the Arkham games. Easy to understand, difficult to master.
+ Catwoman is playable in the open world. Awesome.
+ A nice selection of challenge maps that add playable Catwoman, Robin and Nightwing, each with their own combat styles and moves.
+ Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC is included, and is a good two hours of supplemental gameplay material that happens post-campaign.
+ The GOTY edition includes everything – all DLC, skin packs, and challenge map packs.

+/- The Catwoman DLC has been folded into the main story campaign. Can create some jarring moments when Batman is at a crucial plot point, and the cut-scene switches the story to Catwoman.

    - Performance on the PC is spotty, even now. Try cranking all the settings up, and the benchmark will run without issue, but the game will be plagued by stutter, both in the pre-rendered cutscenes (a video streaming issue) and in-game as the game-world loads in. I installed Arkham City to my SSD drive, I have a Haswell Core i5, 16GB of ram and an RX 470. My system is not the issue. Search the forums and you’ll find many complaints about cut-scene stutter and generally poor stream-in performance. Turn off DX11 graphical features and most of the problems disappear. Still have some issues with initial load-in stutter, but otherwise the issues were resolved. Maybe you won’t have issues if you’re on Nvidia instead of Radeon, but don’t be surprised if you do.
    - Frame-rate is capped at 62 by default. Altering a config file reveals the real fps limit to be around 200.

Without the technical concerns, Arkham City wouldn’t just be a near-perfect Batman game, but one of the best games ever made. Still, the technical concerns are assuaged by the fact that Arkham City frequently discounts to $5 (or less!) on Steam during sales, where it offers incredible value. Heartily recommended.

Well, how could they not be touched?

The surrounding world is perfectly drawn, although, as the saying goes, "in a family is not without a freak," some buildings turned out to be a little blurry, but it's difficult to notice, and why do they even look at them? The costumes of super-heroes are truly inspiring and the desire to admire every bend. Each pixel is detailed in detail, and besides, the costumes tear, scratch, get dirty, it all looks very impressive and remains until the end of the game as battle scars reminiscent of battles with opponents. The only thing I could **** with - this is how stretched the body of Batman, when you activate the cable.

The game process is diverse, in one word there is where to unfold. 2 types of quests: Additional and story. With the plot I think everything is clear, additional quests are diverse and in some way difficult, each side quest of which we only have to do 12 completely different things, there will not be silly assignments like "Go, kill, report" or "Find, steal , bring it, "somewhere we have to find evidence, where we'll have time to reach the phone and answer the call or save the person. Batman has a bunch of devices that break open locks, deafen opponents, block weapons, hide our hero from watchful eyes and do everything that would be as confusing as possible to get out of any existing situation with insignificant losses. The most effective in this game is of course the combat system, unique in its kind, everything from counter-attacks to silent murders and dropping opponents from the roof is envisaged, I think it's not worth writing about it in detail, it will just take a lot of time. In Batman: Arkham city, of course, it's not bypassed stealth and not just stealth, but quality stealth, the enemies react to every rustle, even when squatting you can not be completely sure of your invisibility, and snipers calculate you once or twice after the slightest wrong movement . this is not Elite sniper v2. Despite this, the game is played quite easily and quickly, which is more likely a minus than plus, I would like a long storyline and more additional quests.

1.5 years after the events in Arkham Asylum, the former psychiatric hospital superintendent becomes the mayor of Gotham, buys out the slums and builds a prison there, with Dr. Hugo Streij as its head, and employs the elite division of the Tiger mercenaries as guardians, after which "Tiger" catch Bruce Wayne as well known to us as Batman and betray Hugo Streiju, then from prison, Arkham city Wayne steals another "navel of the earth" with a deviation of the brain Penguin. The game has two possible ends, which depend on the decision you made in one mission. Further I will not tell what would not spoil the impression of the game.

We will be given a chance to play a company for Batman and a Woman for a cat, and in the DLC there will appear characters Robin and Nightwing for which it will be possible to play in the test mode stuffing muzzles not to righteous bandyugans, recedivists and drunkards. In the plot itself, such faces as Joker, Two-faced, Penguin, Rottenhead, Ridler, Mr. Freese, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, Bain, Ra's al Gul, Salamon Grandi, Deedshot, Maxi Zeus, Black Mask, Hash, Quincy Shar who is the corrupt mayor of Gotham, Tilia al Ghul is the girl of Batman and the daughter of Ra's al Ghoul, the butler and loyal friend of Batman Alfred Penniworth, Jack Ryder is the reporter whom we rescue from the clutches of Dadshot, Vicky Vale, the reporter whom we also save .

Nobody expected, but the atmosphere was just magnificent, we completely immersed in the criminal world of the city Arkham city, if you look well, you can find information about each character, building, prison area, and the dark tones in which the graphics are executed gives the final touch to the sense of danger and the inevitability of the fall of the city. Soundtracks are very nice and this game is one of the few in which I did not turn off the sound.

Simply a great game, the best time to spend in anticipation of hot novelties, Rocksteady Studios took up the game, the films and cartoons which have grown generations and exceeded all expectations. It's time to set the ratings: Gameplay 9.5 / 10 -0.5 for a short duration, graphics 9/10 -1 for the blur of some buildings and animation with a hook, Atmosphere 1010, The plot is 10/10 because it's not predictable, and already the end ... uhhh. Despite the schedule, I put this game deserved 10/10, because in my opinion - this is the best game about super-heroes.

The gliding is enough fun that it makes moving from one side of the map to another less distracting. The combat is once again creative and fun, and with random encounters all across the open-world, you can pick a fight whenever you want. The only problems I have are with the side content. Some of the side missions can be annoying and most of them have anticlimactic endings. Most annoyingly are the Riddler trophies which feel more like a chore than anything else. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joker'in peşine düşen Batman, Joker tarafından yakalanır fakat Talia gelip Batman'i bırakması durumunda Joker'e ölümsüzlük verebileceğini söyler. Tekrardan Joker'in peşine düşen Batman, Joker'in izini bulur. Batman, Joker'in cesedini dışarı taşır ve ortadan kaybolur, hikaye burada biter. Expand

Also if I buy a retail copy in a store I don't want it to be sub par to an online distributor like steam.
Secondly: Games for windows live... yeah... not so great, but I don't think you can avoid it. Other than the aforementioned technical issues the game has a couple graphical issues and I'm running a nvidia card (the game is optimized for nvidia). This game is great aside from being a console port, but the mouse and keyboard mapping isn't too bad. The game fighting dynamic reminds me a little bit of assassins creed, where timing is everything when you are surrounded by a huge group of thugs. There are also good espionage aspects in the game where taking down one opponent at a time is crucial to surviving. I will say that this game made me feel like batman, and that is why I'm giving it an 8. I might suggest to go for the console if your computer isn't a beast because while this games graphics are impressive it seems to take quite a machine to get this to go. I am always finding that when a cut-scene ends or begins there is noticeable lag, perhaps this is the U3 engine (I don't recall mass effect 3 doing this). The story is really good, and you can tell that the makers of this game really did want to make something that would stand up for batman fans everywhere. Currently I have an i5-750 8 gigs of ram and a 560ti and I can run this game smoothly on high. Hopefully new nvidia drivers and updates will make for some more gains in the future. This was worth the money I paid for it, and strikes a very good balance of difficulty and challenge. I'm also considering going 3d in the future, and know this game will be one of the reasons to try it out.

I'm sure it changed something there but after the test the game still looked exactly the same, and I couldn't know if it did change anything because there was nothing to tell you the current specs that the game was running on.
Another problem was the seemingly rushed PC changes. I was playing a Silent Predatorn Riddler Challenge and when I accidently mashed the buttons after doing a wrong thing I didn't see the 'F' hovering about a nearby gargoyle, I saw an 'RB'. Thats just one example of some really un-PC like elements of this game.
However, past the fact that this game took longer to put on PC - to no changes whatsoever - there is no doubting that the game is really good. Arkham City is as filthy as Arkham Asylum, and as fun to explore. There are new features like Beat Downs, smoke pellets and multi-person counters and takedowns. Overall this wasn't worth the extra month that PC players had to wait, but playing Batman: Arkham City is definitely fun.

I always patch my nVidia drivers before installing a marquee title like this, plus they've also released a patch that makes DX11 work MUCH better now (although still not perfect). Savegames - this game is another game with curse of annoying checkpoints, its 2012 year but some devs still think that its good idea to use checkpoints instead of quick and manual saves. Checkpoints leads to nothing, but frustration because of lost progress which happens quite often after your death. You may spend a half of hour planing and performing stealthy clean-up of some area, and then you make a little mistake, some NPC shoots you in 1 second or you gets in fight and die and you need to start over again - this makes you afraid to explore and expiriment with environmet and you sticking to same repetivie and less painfull pattern in combats and zone clean-up. The only way to save progress when you are in city - to solve riddle and pick up one of riddler's items, this triggers checkpoint and saves your progress. But they are not infinite and most of them cant be obtained without gadgeds that you can get only in a middle of game or even later, also they are not quite easy to find and to get, so in begining of game you cant get most of them and in then you arleady done with them and in both cases you are out of Saving your progress when your really need it. So not so random side missions and enterexit of builds also saves your progress, but yet again - sometime its difficult to survive to get to this checkpoint. Things getting worse in-doors, the only checkpoints you have there is when you entering some new sub-area, riddles dont save your progress anymore inside buildings, and things turns into real nightmare in a middle of game or later, when every freaking thug gets a firearm or knive, which are hard to handle in close-combat, so you will have a lot of situations when your will clear like 9 roofs, spend a hour for this and then will die and whole hour of progress would be lost! This is annoying! And if you was stupid enoght to select maximum level of difficulty, which makes close-combat a real nightmare, get used to hours of lost progress and replay of same sequences for 10 times - this isnt challenge, this is torture and these is no fun at maximal difficulty, only frustration because of lost progress! And you cant even change difficulty level in settings after you got game started! I was not aware of these issues when i, as hardcore gamer, started game at max difficulty, i spent about 5 hours in my fights agains checkpoints and lack of difficulty settings in started game, and then i gave up and started game again at normal level.
This game really needs proper saving system and difficulty settings.
Yet another flaw is stealth gameplay - its pretty primitive, there is not darklight meter, no soundnoise metter, and AI is pretty dumb with super cheating sharp-shooter skill. Comparing to best stealth games so far thief 3 (DS), Splinter Cell 3 (CT), Riddick, Manhunt, Hitman 4 (bm) - this stealth is pretty retarded and stuck somewhere at level between Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 which are 15 and 10 years old.
In additiion to primitive stealth gameplay this game lacking vital feature like abbility to attrack nearby enemy to your current position without use of super gadgets that would be unlocked in a middle of the game - i mean simple "knock the wall" "pick up and throw some random object" and "whistle" or generic "make some noise, you cant do things like this, and if you will try to shoot, instead of looking at place of impact, which should make some noise, enemy will know your possition since they can hear noise of you shot... this is kinda odd, as well as fact that some weaponstgadged makes noise and some not but any of them could give out your position or may not, there is no clear logic in this - you can hear noise of any weaponsgadgets, but enemies can hear only some of them. Also AI is absolutely deaf, appart from predefined events like one descirbed above, they cant hear foorsteps and a lot of noise you do - this is unacceptable for stealth game in 2012! 10 years old Splinter Cell 1 was much better then this in stealth.
Howereve lack of stealth gameplay quality compensated but quantity of things you can do in this game and by combat - so if i would judge this game as stealth only, i would not give it more than 6 of 10, but since it not stealth only game, it deserves better score.
I would also say some words about graphics - it looks generally good, but textures are really low res, BAA for PC have had better higher res textures, and this time PC version had less of love from devs, so this devs will have less of love from me this time ;-)
Also whole RPG-style crap, xp, upgrades etc - is annoying and dull thing that only exist to arificially make game longer, Batman should be fully upgraded from start! And yeah - pre-cut Robin and NightWing to be sold as dlc is greedy attempt to sell us what should be in game and what we already paid for.

Though the ending is surprising, in a way, the story isn't the main focus of Batman: Arkham City. Exploring and adventuring come first, you have so much to do that you that the hours just slip by you. Yes, the boss fights are probably too easy, the narrative too short, the framerate goes down on occasion and not all the players will appreciate searching through every nook and cranny to find trophies. But it's all up to you and Arkham City offers a variety that not a lot of new games have nowadays.
  2. 92
The developers should be proud for Arkham City and its precise portrayal of Gotham's mood- at least accordingly to recent films and comic books. A gothic atmosphere is undoubtedly dominant, as the majestic architecture of neoclassical buildings shadows the industrialization and the bright lights of a contemporary metropolis.
